◆モーセの後継者ヨシュア
1:1 主の僕モーセの死後、主はモーセの従者、ヌンの子ヨシュアに言われた。
1:2 「わたしの僕モーセは死んだ。今、あなたはこの民すべてと共に立ってヨルダン川を渡り、わたしがイスラエルの人々に与えようとしている土地に行きなさい。
1:3 モーセに告げたとおり、わたしはあなたたちの足の裏が踏む所をすべてあなたたちに与える。
1:4 荒れ野からレバノン山を越え、あの大河ユーフラテスまで、ヘト人の全地を含み、太陽の沈む大海に至るまでが、あなたたちの領土となる。
1:5 一生の間、あなたの行く手に立ちはだかる者はないであろう。わたしはモーセと共にいたように、あなたと共にいる。あなたを見放すことも、見捨てることもない。
1:6 強く、雄々しくあれ。あなたは、わたしが先祖たちに与えると誓った土地を、この民に継がせる者である。
1:7 ただ、強く、大いに雄々しくあって、わたしの僕モーセが命じた律法をすべて忠実に守り、右にも左にもそれてはならない。そうすれば、あなたはどこに行っても成功する。
1:8 この律法の書をあなたの口から離すことなく、昼も夜も口ずさみ、そこに書かれていることをすべて忠実に守りなさい。そうすれば、あなたは、その行く先々で栄え、成功する。
1:9 わたしは、強く雄々しくあれと命じたではないか。うろたえてはならない。おののいてはならない。あなたがどこに行ってもあなたの神、主は共にいる。」
1:10 ヨシュアは民の役人たちに命じた。
1:11 「宿営内を巡って民に命じ、こう言いなさい。おのおの食糧を用意せよ。あなたたちは、あと三日のうちに、このヨルダン川を渡る。あなたたちの神、主が得させようとしておられる土地に入り、それを得る。」
1:12 ヨシュアは、ルベン人、ガド人、マナセの半部族に告げた。
1:13 「主の僕モーセが命じた言葉を思い起こしなさい。彼はこう言った。『この土地はあなたたちの安住の地、あなたたちの神、主が与えてくださったものである』と。
1:14 モーセがあなたたちに与えたヨルダン川の東の地に妻子と家畜を残し、あなたたち、勇士は皆、隊伍を整え、同胞たちに先立って川を渡り、彼らを助けなさい。
1:15 主が彼らをも、あなたたちと同じように安らかに住まわせ、あなたたちの神、主が与えられる土地を、彼らも得られるようにしなさい。あなたたちはその後、主の僕モーセがあなたたちの領地としたヨルダン川の東、すなわち太陽の昇る側の土地に帰り、それを得なさい。」
1:16 彼らはヨシュアに答えた。「我々は、御命令を行います。遣わされる所にはどこへでも参ります。
1:17 我々はモーセに従ったように、あなたに従います。どうか、あなたの神、主がモーセと共におられたように、あなたと共におられますように。
1:18 いかなる命令であっても、あなたの口から出る言葉に背いて、従わない者は死に定められねばなりません。どうぞ、強く、雄々しくあってください。」

◆エリコを探る
2:1 ヌンの子ヨシュアは二人の斥候をシティムからひそかに送り出し、「行って、エリコとその周辺を探れ」と命じた。二人は行って、ラハブという遊女の家に入り、そこに泊まった。
2:2 ところが、エリコの王に、「今夜、イスラエルの何者かがこの辺りを探るために忍び込んで来ました」と告げる者があったので、
2:3 王は人を遣わしてラハブに命じた。「お前のところに来て、家に入り込んだ者を引き渡せ。彼らはこの辺りを探りに来たのだ。」
2:4 女は、急いで二人をかくまい、こう答えた。「確かに、その人たちはわたしのところに来ましたが、わたしはその人たちがどこから来たのか知りませんでした。
2:5 日が暮れて城門が閉まるころ、その人たちは出て行きましたが、どこへ行ったのか分かりません。急いで追いかけたら、あるいは追いつけるかもしれません。」
2:6 彼女は二人を屋上に連れて行き、そこに積んであった亜麻の束の中に隠していたが、
2:7 追っ手は二人を求めてヨルダン川に通じる道を渡し場まで行った。城門は、追っ手が出て行くとすぐに閉じられた。
2:8 二人がまだ寝てしまわないうちに、ラハブは屋上に上って来て、
2:9 言った。「主がこの土地をあなたたちに与えられたこと、またそのことで、わたしたちが恐怖に襲われ、この辺りの住民は皆、おじけづいていることを、わたしは知っています。
2:10 あなたたちがエジプトを出たとき、あなたたちのために、主が葦の海の水を干上がらせたことや、あなたたちがヨルダン川の向こうのアモリ人の二人の王に対してしたこと、すなわち、シホンとオグを滅ぼし尽くしたことを、わたしたちは聞いています。
2:11 それを聞いたとき、わたしたちの心は挫け、もはやあなたたちに立ち向かおうとする者は一人もおりません。あなたたちの神、主こそ、上は天、下は地に至るまで神であられるからです。
2:12 わたしはあなたたちに誠意を示したのですから、あなたたちも、わたしの一族に誠意を示す、と今、主の前でわたしに誓ってください。そして、確かな証拠をください。
2:13 父も母も、兄弟姉妹も、更に彼らに連なるすべての者たちも生かし、わたしたちの命を死から救ってください。」
2:14 二人は彼女に答えた。「あなたたちのために、我々の命をかけよう。もし、我々のことをだれにも漏らさないなら、主がこの土地を我々に与えられるとき、あなたに誠意と真実を示そう。」
2:15 ラハブは二人を窓から綱でつり降ろした。彼女の家は、城壁の壁面を利用したものであり、城壁の内側に住んでいたからである。
2:16 彼女は二人に言った。「追っ手に会わないように、山の方へ行きなさい。三日間はそこに身を隠し、追っ手が引き揚げてから帰りなさい。」
2:17 二人は彼女に言った。「あなたが我々に誓わせた誓いから、我々が解かれることもある。
2:18 我々がここに攻め込むとき、我々をつり降ろした窓にこの真っ赤なひもを結び付けておきなさい。またあなたの父母、兄弟、一族を一人残らず家に集めておきなさい。
2:19 もし、だれかが戸口から外へ出たなら、血を流すことになっても、その責任はその人にある。我々には責任がない。だが、あなたと一緒に家の中にいる者に手をかけるなら、その血の責任は我々にある。
2:20 もし、あなたが我々のことをだれかに知らせるなら、我々は、あなたの誓わせた誓いから解かれる。」
2:21 ラハブは、「お言葉どおりにいたしましょう」と答えて、二人を送り出し、彼らが立ち去ると、真っ赤なひもを窓に結び付けた。
2:22 二人は山に入って行き、そこに三日間とどまって、追っ手が引き揚げるのを待った。追っ手はくまなく捜したが、見つけ出すことはできなかった。

◆ヨルダン川を渡る
3:1 ヨシュアは、朝早く起き、イスラエルの人々すべてと共にシティムを出発し、ヨルダン川の岸に着いたが、川を渡る前に、そこで野営した。
3:2 三日たってから、民の役人は宿営の中を巡り、
3:3 民に命じた。「あなたたちは、あなたたちの神、主の契約の箱をレビ人の祭司たちが担ぐのを見たなら、今いる所をたって、その後に続け。
3:4 契約の箱との間には約二千アンマの距離をとり、それ以上近寄ってはならない。そうすれば、これまで一度も通ったことのない道であるが、あなたたちの行くべき道は分かる。」
3:5 ヨシュアは民に言った。「自分自身を聖別せよ。主は明日、あなたたちの中に驚くべきことを行われる。」
3:6 ヨシュアが祭司たちに、「契約の箱を担ぎ、民の先に立って、川を渡れ」と命じると、彼らは契約の箱を担ぎ、民の先に立って進んだ。
3:7 主はヨシュアに言われた。「今日から、全イスラエルの見ている前であなたを大いなる者にする。そして、わたしがモーセと共にいたように、あなたと共にいることを、すべての者に知らせる。
3:8 あなたは、契約の箱を担ぐ祭司たちに、ヨルダン川の水際に着いたら、ヨルダン川の中に立ち止まれと命じなさい。」
3:9 ヨシュアはイスラエルの人々に、「ここに来て、あなたたちの神、主の言葉を聞け」と命じ、
3:10 こう言った。「生ける神があなたたちの間におられて、カナン人、ヘト人、ヒビ人、ペリジ人、ギルガシ人、アモリ人、エブス人をあなたたちの前から完全に追い払ってくださることは、次のことで分かる。
3:11 見よ、全地の主の契約の箱があなたたちの先に立ってヨルダン川を渡って行く。
3:12 今、イスラエルの各部族から一人ずつ、計十二人を選び出せ。
3:13 全地の主である主の箱を担ぐ祭司たちの足がヨルダン川の水に入ると、川上から流れてくる水がせき止められ、ヨルダン川の水は、壁のように立つであろう。」
3:14 ヨルダン川を渡るため、民が天幕を後にしたとき、契約の箱を担いだ祭司たちは、民の先頭に立ち、
3:15 ヨルダン川に達した。春の刈り入れの時期で、ヨルダン川の水は堤を越えんばかりに満ちていたが、箱を担ぐ祭司たちの足が水際に浸ると、
3:16 川上から流れてくる水は、はるか遠くのツァレタンの隣町アダムで壁のように立った。そのため、アラバの海すなわち塩の海に流れ込む水は全く断たれ、民はエリコに向かって渡ることができた。
3:17 主の契約の箱を担いだ祭司たちがヨルダン川の真ん中の干上がった川床に立ち止まっているうちに、全イスラエルは干上がった川床を渡り、民はすべてヨルダン川を渡り終わった。

◆記念の十二の石
4:1 民がすべてヨルダン川を渡り終わったとき、主はヨシュアに言われた。
4:2 「民の中から部族ごとに一人ずつ、計十二人を選び出し、
4:3 彼らに命じて、ヨルダン川の真ん中の、祭司たちが足を置いた場所から、石を十二個拾わせ、それを携えて行き、今夜野営する場所に据えさせなさい。」
4:4 ヨシュアはイスラエルの各部族から一人ずつ、かねて決めておいた十二人を呼び寄せて、
4:5 言った。「ヨルダン川の真ん中の、あなたたちの神、主の箱の前に行き、イスラエルの人々の部族の数に合わせて、石を一つずつ肩に担いで来い。
4:6 それはあなたたちの間でしるしとなるであろう。後日、あなたたちの子供が、これらの石は何を意味するのですかと尋ねるときには、
4:7 こう答えなさい。『ヨルダン川の流れは、主の契約の箱の前でせき止められた。箱がヨルダン川を渡るとき、ヨルダン川の流れはせき止められた。これらの石は、永久にイスラエルの人々の記念となる』と。」
4:8 イスラエルの人々はヨシュアの命じたとおりにした。主がヨシュアに告げられたように、イスラエルの人々の部族の数に合わせて、十二の石をヨルダン川の真ん中から拾い、それらを携えて行き、野営する場所に据えた。
4:9 ヨシュアはまた、契約の箱を担いだ祭司たちが川の真ん中で足をとどめた跡に十二の石を立てたが、それは今日までそこにある。
4:10 主がヨシュアに命じて民に告げさせたことがすべて終わるまで、箱を担いだ祭司たちはヨルダン川の真ん中に立ち止まっていた。すべてモーセがヨシュアに命じたとおりである。その間に民は急いで川を渡った。
4:11 民が皆、渡り終わると、主の箱と祭司たちとは民の先頭に立った。
4:12 ルベンとガドの人々、およびマナセの半部族は、モーセがかつて告げたとおり、隊伍を整え、他のイスラエルの人々の先に立ち、
4:13 約四万の武装した軍勢が主の前を進み、戦うためエリコの平野に向かって行った。
4:14 その日、全イスラエルの見ている前で、主がヨシュアを大いなる者とされたので、彼らはモーセを敬ったように、ヨシュアをその生涯を通じて敬った。
4:15 主はヨシュアに言われた。
4:16 「掟の箱を担ぐ祭司たちに命じて、ヨルダン川から上がって来させなさい。」
4:17 ヨシュアが祭司たちに、「ヨルダン川から上がって来い」と命じ、
4:18 主の契約の箱を担ぐ祭司たちはヨルダン川から上がり、彼らの足の裏が乾いた土を踏んだとき、ヨルダン川の流れは元どおりになり、以前のように堤を越えんばかりに流れた。
4:19 第一の月の十日に、民はヨルダン川から上がって、エリコの町の東の境にあるギルガルに宿営した。
4:20 ヨシュアはヨルダン川から取った十二の石をギルガルに立て、
4:21 イスラエルの人々に告げた。「後日、あなたたちの子供が、これらの石は何を意味するのですかと尋ねるときには、
4:22 子供たちに、イスラエルはヨルダン川の乾いたところを渡ったのだと教えねばならない。
4:23 あなたたちの神、主は、あなたたちが渡りきるまで、あなたたちのためにヨルダンの水を涸らしてくださった。それはちょうど、我々が葦の海を渡りきるまで、あなたたちの神、主が我々のために海の水を涸らしてくださったのと同じである。
4:24 それは、地上のすべての民が主の御手の力強いことを知るためであり、また、あなたたちが常に、あなたたちの神、主を敬うためである。」

◆契約のしるし
5:1 ヨルダン川の西側にいるアモリ人の王たちと、沿岸地方にいるカナン人の王たちは皆、主がイスラエルの人々のためにヨルダン川の水を涸らして、彼らを渡らせたと聞いて、心が挫け、もはやイスラエルの人々に立ち向かおうとする者はいなかった。
5:2 そのとき、主はヨシュアに、火打ち石の刃物を作り、もう一度イスラエルの人々に割礼を施せ、とお命じになった。
5:3 ヨシュアは、自ら火打ち石の刃物を作り、ギブアト・アラロトでイスラエルの人々に割礼を施した。
5:4 ヨシュアが割礼を施した理由はこうである。すなわちエジプトを出て来たすべての民、戦士である成人男子は皆、エジプトを出た後、途中の荒れ野で死んだ。
5:5 出て来た民は皆、割礼を受けていたが、エジプトを出た後、途中の荒れ野で生まれた者は一人も割礼を受けていなかったからである。
5:6 イスラエルの人々は荒れ野を四十年さまよい歩き、その間にエジプトを出て来た民、戦士たちはすべて死に絶えた。彼らが主の御声に聞き従わなかったため、我々に与えると先祖たちにお誓いになった土地、すなわち乳と蜜の流れる土地を、彼らには見せない、と主は誓われたのである。
5:7 ヨシュアが割礼を施したのは、神がその代わりにお立てになった彼らの息子たちであって、途中で割礼を受ける折がなく、無割礼だったからである。
5:8 民は全員割礼を受けた後、その傷がいえるまで、宿営内の自分の場所にとどまった。
5:9 主はヨシュアに言われた。「今日、わたしはあなたたちから、エジプトでの恥辱を取り除いた（ガラ）。」そのために、その場所の名はギルガルと呼ばれ、今日に至っている。
5:10 イスラエルの人々はギルガルに宿営していたが、その月の十四日の夕刻、エリコの平野で過越祭を祝った。
5:11 過越祭の翌日、その日のうちに彼らは土地の産物を、酵母を入れないパンや炒り麦にして食べた。
5:12 彼らが土地の産物を食べ始めたその日以来、マナは絶え、イスラエルの人々に、もはやマナはなくなった。彼らは、その年にカナンの土地で取れた収穫物を食べた。

◆エリコの占領
6:1 エリコは、イスラエルの人々の攻撃に備えて城門を堅く閉ざしたので、だれも出入りすることはできなかった。
6:2 そのとき、主はヨシュアに言われた。「見よ、わたしはエリコとその王と勇士たちをあなたの手に渡す。
6:3 あなたたち兵士は皆、町の周りを回りなさい。町を一周し、それを六日間続けなさい。
6:4 七人の祭司は、それぞれ雄羊の角笛を携えて神の箱を先導しなさい。七日目には、町を七周し、祭司たちは角笛を吹き鳴らしなさい。
6:5 彼らが雄羊の角笛を長く吹き鳴らし、その音があなたたちの耳に達したら、民は皆、鬨の声をあげなさい。町の城壁は崩れ落ちるから、民は、それぞれ、その場所から突入しなさい。」
6:6 ヌンの子ヨシュアは、まず祭司たちを呼び集め、「契約の箱を担げ。七人は、各自雄羊の角笛を携えて主の箱を先導せよ」と命じ、

6:17 町とその中にあるものは、ことごとく滅ぼし尽くして主にささげよ。ただし、遊女ラハブおよび彼女と一緒に家の中にいる者は皆、生かしておきなさい。我々が遣わした使いをかくまってくれたからである。
6:18 あなたたちはただ滅ぼし尽くすべきものを欲しがらないように気をつけ、滅ぼし尽くすべきものの一部でもかすめ取ってイスラエルの宿営全体を滅ぼすような不幸を招かないようにせよ。
6:19 金、銀、銅器、鉄器はすべて主にささげる聖なるものであるから、主の宝物倉に納めよ。」
6:20 角笛が鳴り渡ると、民は鬨の声をあげた。民が角笛の音を聞いて、一斉に鬨の声をあげると、城壁が崩れ落ち、民はそれぞれ、その場から町に突入し、この町を占領した。
6:21 彼らは、男も女も、若者も老人も、また牛、羊、ろばに至るまで町にあるものはことごとく剣にかけて滅ぼし尽くした。
6:22 ヨシュアは、土地を探った二人の斥候に、「あの遊女の家に行って、あなたたちが誓ったとおり、その女と彼女に連なる者すべてをそこから連れ出せ」と命じた。
6:23 斥候の若者たちは行って、ラハブとその父母、兄弟、彼女に連なる者すべてを連れ出し、彼女の親族をすべて連れ出してイスラエルの宿営のそばに避難させた。
6:24 彼らはその後、町とその中のすべてのものを焼き払い、金、銀、銅器、鉄器だけを主の宝物倉に納めた。
6:25 遊女ラハブとその一族、彼女に連なる者はすべて、ヨシュアが生かしておいたので、イスラエルの中に住んで今日に至っている。エリコを探る斥候としてヨシュアが派遣した使者を、彼女がかくまったからである。
6:26 ヨシュアは、このとき、誓って言った。「この町エリコを再建しようとする者は／主の呪いを受ける。基礎を据えたときに長子を失い／城門を建てたときに末子を失う。」
6:27 主がヨシュアと共におられたので、彼の名声はこの地方一帯に広まった。

◆アカンの罪
7:1 イスラエルの人々は、滅ぼし尽くしてささげるべきことに対して不誠実であった。ユダ族に属し、彼の父はカルミ、祖父はザブディ、更にゼラへとさかのぼるアカンは、滅ぼし尽くしてささげるべきものの一部を盗み取った。主はそこで、イスラエルの人々に対して激しく憤られた。
7:2 ヨシュアはエリコからアイへ数人の人を遣わし、「上って行って、あの土地を探れ」と命じた。アイはベテルの東、ベト・アベンの近くにあった。彼らは上って行ってアイを探り、
7:3 ヨシュアのもとに帰って来て言った。「アイを撃つのに全軍が出撃するには及びません。二、三千人が行けばいいでしょう。取るに足りぬ相手ですから、全軍をつぎ込むことはありません。」
7:4 そこで、民のうちから約三千の兵がアイに攻め上ったが、彼らはアイの兵士の前に敗退した。
7:5 アイの兵士は、城門を出て石切り場まで追跡し、下り坂のところで彼らを撃ち、おおよそ三十六人を殺した。民の心は挫け、水のようになった。
7:6 ヨシュアは衣服を引き裂き、イスラエルの長老たちと共に、主の箱の前で夕方まで地にひれ伏し、頭に塵をかぶった。
7:7 ヨシュアは神に言った。「ああ、わが神、主よ。なぜ、あなたはこの民にヨルダン川を渡らせたのですか。わたしたちをアモリ人の手に渡して滅ぼすおつもりだったのですか。わたしたちはヨルダン川の向こうにとどまることで満足していたのです。
7:8 主よ、イスラエルが敵に背を向けて逃げ帰った今となって、わたしは何と言えばいいのでしょう。
7:9 カナン人やこの土地の住民は、このことを聞いたなら、わたしたちを攻め囲んで皆殺しにし、わたしたちの名を地から断ってしまうでしょう。あなたは、御自分の偉大な御名のゆえに、何をしてくださるのですか。」
7:10 主はヨシュアに言われた。「立ちなさい。なぜ、そのようにひれ伏しているのか。
7:11 イスラエルは罪を犯し、わたしが命じた契約を破り、滅ぼし尽くしてささげるべきものの一部を盗み取り、ごまかして自分のものにした。
7:12 だから、イスラエルの人々は、敵に立ち向かうことができず、敵に背を向けて逃げ、滅ぼし尽くされるべきものとなってしまった。もし、あなたたちの間から滅ぼし尽くすべきものを一掃しないなら、わたしは、もはやあなたたちと共にいない。
7:13 立って民を清め、『明日に備えて自分を聖別せよ』と命じなさい。イスラエルの神、主が、『イスラエルよ、あなたたちの中に滅ぼし尽くすべきものが残っている。それを除き去るまでは敵に立ち向かうことはできない』と言われるからである。
7:14 明日の朝、あなたたちは部族ごとに進み出なさい。主の指摘を受けた部族は、氏族ごとに進み出なさい。主の指摘を受けた氏族は、家族ごとに進み出なさい。主の指摘を受けた家族の男子は、一人ずつ進み出なさい。
7:15 滅ぼし尽くすべきものを持つ者がこうして、指摘されたなら、その人は財産もろとも火で焼き尽くされねばならない。彼は主の契約を破り、イスラエルにおいては愚かなことをしたからである。」
7:16 翌朝、ヨシュアは早く起き、イスラエルを部族ごとに進み出させると、ユダ族が指摘を受けた。
7:17 ユダの諸氏族を進み出させると、ゼラの氏族が指摘を受けた。ゼラの氏族の男子を一人ずつ進み出させると、ザブディ家が指摘を受けた。
7:18 ザブディ家の男子を一人ずつ進み出させると、ユダ族のゼラ氏族に属するザブディ家のカルミの子アカンが指摘を受けた。
7:19 ヨシュアがアカンに、「わたしの子よ。イスラエルの神、主に栄光を帰し、主をほめたたえ、あなたが何をしたのか包み隠さずわたしに告げなさい」と言うと、
7:20 アカンはヨシュアに答えた。「わたしは、確かにイスラエルの神、主に罪を犯しました。わたしがしたことはこうです。
7:21 分捕り物の中に一枚の美しいシンアルの上着、銀二百シェケル、重さ五十シェケルの金の延べ板があるのを見て、欲しくなって取りました。今それらは、わたしの天幕の地下に銀を下に敷いて埋めてあります。」
7:22 ヨシュアの出した使いたちがアカンの天幕に走って行って見ると、果たして彼の天幕の中に、銀を下に敷いて地下に埋めてあった。
7:23 彼らはそれを天幕から取り出して、ヨシュアとイスラエルのすべての人々のもとに運び、主の前にひろげた。
7:24 ヨシュアはゼラの子アカンはもとより、銀、上着、金の延べ板、更に息子、娘、牛、ろば、羊、天幕、彼の全財産を取り押さえ、全イスラエルを率いてアコルの谷にそれらを運び、
7:25 こう宣言した。「お前は何という災いを我々にもたらしたことか。今日は、主がお前に災いをもたらされる（アカル）。」全イスラエルはアカンに石を激しく投げつけ、彼のものを火に焼き、家族を石で打ち殺した。
7:26 彼らは、アカンの上に大きな石塚を積み上げたが、それは今日まで残っている。主の激しい怒りはこうしてやんだ。このようなわけで、その場所の名はアコルの谷と呼ばれ、今日に至っている。

◆アイの滅亡
8:1 主はヨシュアに言われた。「恐れてはならない。おののいてはならない。全軍隊を引き連れてアイに攻め上りなさい。アイの王も民も町も周辺の土地もあなたの手に渡す。
8:2 エリコとその王にしたように、アイとその王にしなさい。ただし、分捕り物と家畜は自分たちのために奪い取ってもよい。あなたは、町を裏手からうかがうように伏兵を置け。」
8:3 ヨシュアは全軍隊を率いて行動を起こし、アイへ攻め上った。ヨシュアは三万の勇士をえりすぐって夜の間に送り込み、
8:4 彼らに命じた。「見よ、あなたたちは裏手から町をうかがう伏兵であるから、町からあまり離れず、全員、態勢を整えておきなさい。
8:5 その他の全軍はわたしと共に町に近づく。敵がこの前と同様、我々を迎え撃とうと出て来たなら、我々は退却する。
8:6 敵は、我々がこの前と同様、退却して行くと思って、追撃して来るであろう。そうすれば彼らを町からおびき出せる。我々が退却している間に、
8:7 あなたたちは待ち伏せしている所から出て、町を占領しなさい。あなたたちの神、主は町をあなたたちの手に渡してくださる。
8:8 町を取ったらこれに火を放ち、主の言葉どおり行いなさい。見よ、わたしはこう、あなたたちに命じている。」
8:9 ヨシュアがこうして、彼らを遣わしたので、彼らはアイの西側、ベテルとアイの間の待ち伏せの場所に行って待機した。民と共にその夜を過ごしたヨシュアは、
8:10 翌朝早く起きて民を召集し、イスラエルの長老たちと共に、その先頭に立ってアイに向かって上った。
8:11 ヨシュアに率いられた全軍は攻め上って、町の入り口近くに達し、谷一つ隔ててアイの北側に陣を敷いた。
8:12 彼は約五千人を選び、伏兵として町の西側、ベテルとアイの間に配置した。
8:13 その他の兵は町の北側にすべての宿営を張ったが、最後部は町の西に達していた。その晩、ヨシュアは平野へ下って行った。
8:14 それはアイの王の知るところとなり、町の者も急ぎ起き出し、王とその全軍は、イスラエルを迎え撃とうとアラバに面する戦場に進軍した。王は町の裏手に伏兵がいるとは知らなかった。
8:15 ヨシュアの率いる全イスラエルが彼らに打ち破られたかのように荒れ野の道を退却すると、
8:16 町の全軍も追撃のために呼び集められ、ヨシュアの後を追い、彼らはこうして、町からおびき出された。
8:17 イスラエルを追わずに残った者は、アイにもベテルにも一人もいなかった。しかも、イスラエルの後を追ったとき、町の門は開けたままであった。
8:18 主はヨシュアに言われた。「あなたが手にしている投げ槍をアイに向かって差し伸べなさい。わたしはアイをあなたの手に渡す。」ヨシュアが手にしていた投げ槍を町に向かって差し伸べると、
8:19 伏兵は一斉にその場所から立ち上がり、ヨシュアが手を伸ばしている間に町に攻め込んで占領し、直ちに町に火を放った。
8:20 アイの兵士が振り返って見たときには、既に町の煙は天に達しており、荒れ野に逃げた軍勢も追っ手に対して向き直ったので、彼らはどこにも逃げることができなくなってしまった。
8:21 ヨシュアの率いる全イスラエルは、伏兵が町を占領し、町から煙が立ち昇るのを見ると、向きを変えてアイの兵士に打ちかかり、
8:22 伏兵も町を出て彼らに向かったので、彼らはイスラエル軍の挟み撃ちに遭い、生き残った者も落ちのびた者も一人もいなくなるまで打ちのめされた。
8:23 アイの王は生け捕りにされ、ヨシュアのもとに引き出された。
8:24 イスラエルは、追って来たアイの全住民を野原や荒れ野で殺し、一人残らず剣にかけて倒した。全イスラエルはアイにとって返し、その町を剣にかけて撃った。
8:25 その日の敵の死者は男女合わせて一万二千人、アイの全住民であった。
8:26 ヨシュアはアイの住民をことごとく滅ぼし尽くすまで投げ槍を差し伸べた手を引っ込めなかった。
8:27 ただし、この町の家畜と分捕り品は、主がヨシュアに命じた言葉どおり、イスラエルが自分たちのために奪い取った。
8:28 ヨシュアはこうしてアイを焼き払い、とこしえの廃虚の丘として打ち捨てた。それは今日まで残っている。
8:29 ヨシュアはまた、アイの王を木にかけて夕方までさらし、太陽の沈むころ、命じてその死体を木から下ろさせ、町の門の入り口に投げ捨て、それを覆う大きな石塚を築かせた。それは今日まで残っている。
◆エバル山での律法の朗読
8:30 そのころ、ヨシュアはエバル山にイスラエルの神、主のための祭壇を築いた。
8:31 この祭壇は、主の僕モーセがイスラエルの人々に命じ、モーセの教えの書に記されたとおり、鉄の道具を使わない自然のままの石で造られた。彼らはその上で、主に焼き尽くす献げ物と和解の献げ物をささげた。
8:32 ヨシュアはこの祭壇の石に、モーセがイスラエルの人々のために記した教えの写しを刻んだ。
8:33 全イスラエルは、長老、役人、裁判人をはじめ、寄留者もその土地に生まれた者も、主の契約の箱を担ぐレビ人である祭司たちの前で、箱のこちら側とあちら側に、半分はゲリジム山の前に、他の半分はエバル山の前に立った。それは主の僕モーセがかつて命じたように、イスラエルの民を祝福するためであった。
8:34 その後ヨシュアは、律法の言葉すなわち祝福と呪いをことごとく、すべて律法の書に記されているとおりに読み上げた。
8:35 ヨシュアは、モーセが命じたことをひと言残さず、イスラエルの全会衆、女、子供、彼らの間で生活する寄留者の前で読み上げた。

◆ギブオン人の服従
9:1 ヨルダン川の西側の山地、シェフェラ、レバノン山のふもとに至る大海の沿岸地方に住むヘト人、アモリ人、カナン人、ペリジ人、ヒビ人、エブス人の王たちは皆、このことを伝え聞くと、
9:2 集結してヨシュアの率いるイスラエルと一致して戦おうとした。
9:3 ところがギブオンの住民は、ヨシュアがエリコとアイに対してしたことを聞き、
9:4 賢く立ちまわった。彼らは使者を装い、古びた袋、使い古して繕ってあるぶどう酒の革袋をろばに負わせ、
9:5 継ぎの当たった古靴を履き、着古した外套をまとい、食糧として干からびたぼろぼろのパンを携えた。
9:6 彼らはギルガルの陣営に来てヨシュアとイスラエル人に、「わたしたちは遠い国から参りました。どうか今、わたしたちと協定を結んでください」と言うと、
9:7 イスラエル人はそのヒビ人に言った。「お前たちは、我々と共にここに住んでいるのだろう。どうして協定を結べようか。」
9:8 彼らはヨシュアに、「わたしたちはあなたの僕でございます」と言うと、ヨシュアは尋ねた。「あなたたちは何者か、どこから来たのか。」
9:9 彼らは言った。「僕どもはあなたの神、主の御名を慕ってはるかな遠い国から参りました。主がエジプトでなさった一切のことも、
9:10 ヨルダン川の東側のアモリ人の二人の王、すなわちヘシュボンの王シホンとアシュタロトにいたバシャンの王オグになさったことも、ことごとく伝え聞きました。
9:11 わたしたちの長老はじめ国の住民は皆、わたしたちに、『旅の食糧を手に携え、彼らに会って、わたしたちはあなたたちの僕です、どうか今、わたしたちと協定を結んでくださいと言いなさい』と申しました。
9:12 御覧ください。これがわたしたちのパンです。ここに来ようと出発した日に、食糧として家から携え出たときにはまだ温かかったのが、今はすっかり干からびてぼろぼろです。
9:13 このぶどう酒の革袋も酒を詰めたときは真新しかったのですが、御覧ください、破れてしまいました。わたしたちの外套も靴も、はるかな長旅のため、古びてしまいました。」
9:14 男たちは彼らの食糧を受け取ったが、主の指示を求めなかった。
9:15 ヨシュアは彼らと和を講じ、命を保障する協定を結び、共同体の指導者たちもその誓いに加わった。
9:16 協定を結んでから三日後、彼らが近くの者で、自分たちのうちに住んでいることを聞くと、
9:17 イスラエルの人々はそこをたって、三日目に彼らの町ギブオン、ケフィラ、ベエロト、キルヤト・エアリムに着いた。
9:18 イスラエルの人々は、共同体の指導者たちがイスラエルの神、主にかけて誓いを立てていたので、彼らを攻撃はしなかったが、共同体全体は指導者たちに不平を鳴らした。
9:19 指導者たちは皆、共同体全体に言った。「我々はイスラエルの神、主にかけて彼らに誓った。今、彼らに手をつけることはできない。
9:20 我々のなすべきことはこうである。彼らを生かしておこう。彼らに誓った誓いのゆえに、御怒りが我々に下ることはないだろう。」
9:21 指導者たちは続けた。「彼らを生かしておき、共同体全体のために柴刈りと水くみをさせよう。」彼らはこうして、指導者たちの告げたとおりになった。
9:22 ヨシュアはギブオンの住民を呼び集めて、彼らに言った。「お前たちはなぜ、我々を欺いて、はるかな遠い国から来たと言ったのか。お前たちは我々のうちに住んでいるではないか。
9:23 お前たちは今、呪われて、奴隷となり、お前たちの間からわが神の宮の柴刈り、水くみが断えることはないだろう。」
9:24 彼らはヨシュアに答えた。「あなたの神、主がその僕モーセに、『この地方はすべてあなたたちに与える。土地の住民をすべて滅ぼせ』とお命じになったことが僕どもにはっきり伝わって来たので、あなたたちのゆえに命を失うのを非常に恐れ、このことをいたしました。
9:25 御覧ください。わたしたちは今はあなたの手の中にあります。あなたが良いと見なし、正しいと見なされることをなさってください。」
9:26 ヨシュアは彼らにそのようにし、イスラエルの人々の手から彼らを助け、殺すことを許さなかった。
9:27 ヨシュアは、その日、彼らを共同体および主の祭壇のため、主の選ばれた所で柴刈りまた水くみとした。それは今日まで続いている。

◆五人の王の征服
10:1 エルサレムの王アドニ・ツェデクは、ヨシュアがアイを占領し、滅ぼし尽くし、アイの町とその王をも、先のエリコとその王と同じように取り扱ったことを聞き、またギブオンの住民がイスラエルと和を結び、彼らのうちに住むことを許されたと聞くと、
10:2 非常に恐れた。ギブオンはアイよりも大きく、王をいただく都市ほどの大きな町であり、その上、そこの男たちは皆、勇士だったからである。
10:3 エルサレムの王アドニ・ツェデクは、ヘブロンの王ホハム、ヤルムトの王ピルアム、ラキシュの王ヤフィア、エグロンの王デビルに人を遣わし、
10:4 「わたしのもとに上り、ギブオンを撃つのを助けていただきたい。彼らはヨシュアの率いるイスラエルの人々と和を結んだ」と伝えた。
10:5 アモリ人の五人の王、すなわちエルサレム、ヘブロン、ヤルムト、ラキシュ、エグロンの王たちとその全軍勢は連合して攻め上り、ギブオンに向かって陣を敷き、戦いを仕掛けた。
10:6 ギブオンの人々はギルガルの陣営にいるヨシュアに人を遣わして、こう告げた。「あなたの僕から手を引かず、早く上って来て、わたしたちを救い、助けてください。山地に住むアモリ人のすべての王たちがわたしたちに向かって集結しています。」
10:7 ヨシュアは兵士全員、すべての勇士を率いてギルガルから出陣した。
10:8 主はヨシュアに言われた。「彼らを恐れてはならない。わたしは既に彼らをあなたの手に渡した。あなたの行く手に立ちはだかる者は一人もいない。」
10:9 ヨシュアはギルガルから夜通し軍を進め、彼らを急襲した。
10:10 主はイスラエルの前で彼らを混乱に陥れられたので、ヨシュアはギブオンで敵に大打撃を与え、更に彼らを追ってベト・ホロンの坂道を登り、アゼカ、マケダまで彼らを追撃した。
10:11 彼らがイスラエルの前から敗走し、ベト・ホロンの下り坂にさしかかったとき、主は天から大石を降らせた。それはアゼカまで続いたので、雹に打たれて死んだ者はイスラエルの人々が剣で殺した者よりも多かった。
10:12 主がアモリ人をイスラエルの人々に渡された日、ヨシュアはイスラエルの人々の見ている前で主をたたえて言った。「日よとどまれギブオンの上に／月よとどまれアヤロンの谷に。」
10:13 日はとどまり／月は動きをやめた／民が敵を打ち破るまで。『ヤシャルの書』にこう記されているように、日はまる一日、中天にとどまり、急いで傾こうとしなかった。
10:14 主がこの日のように人の訴えを聞き届けられたことは、後にも先にもなかった。主はイスラエルのために戦われたのである。
10:15 ヨシュアはその後、全イスラエルを率いてギルガルの陣営に戻った。
10:16 この五人の王は逃げてマケダの洞穴に身を隠した。
10:17 ヨシュアは、五人の王がマケダの洞穴に隠れているのが見つかったとの知らせを受けると、
10:18 こう命じた。「大きな石を転がして、洞穴の入り口をふさぎ、見張りの兵を置け。
10:19 あとの者はそこにとどまらず、敵を追撃し、背後から攻撃して、町に入れるな。あなたたちの神、主は既に彼らをあなたたちの手に渡された。」
10:20 ヨシュアの率いるイスラエルの人々は敵に決定的な大打撃を与え、ついに全滅させた。かろうじて砦の町へ逃げ込んだのはごくわずかの敗残兵にすぎなかった。
10:21 民は皆、無事にヨシュアのいるマケダの陣営に帰還し、もはやイスラエルの人々を中傷する者はなかった。
10:22 ヨシュアは命じた。「洞穴の入り口を開き、あの五人の王たちを洞穴からわたしの前に引き出せ。」
10:23 彼らはそのとおりにし、エルサレム、ヘブロン、ヤルムト、ラキシュ、エグロンの五人の王を洞穴から引き出した。
10:24 五人の王がヨシュアの前に引き出されると、ヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人々を呼び寄せ、彼と共に戦った兵士の指揮官たちに、「ここに来て彼らの首を踏みつけよ」と命じた。彼らは来て、王たちの首を踏みつけた。
10:25 ヨシュアは言った。「恐れてはならない。おののいてはならない。強く、雄々しくあれ。あなたたちが戦う敵に対して主はこのようになさる。」
10:26 ヨシュアはその後、彼らを打ち殺し、五本の木にかけ、夕方までさらしておいた。
10:27 しかし、太陽の沈むころ、ヨシュアは命じてその死体を木から下ろさせ、彼らが隠れていた洞穴に投げ入れ、入り口を大きな石でふさいだ。それは、今日まで残っている。

10:30 主がこの町も王もイスラエルの手に渡されたので、剣をもって町を撃ち、その住民を一人も残さなかった。リブナの王に対してもエリコの王と同じようにした。
10:31 ヨシュアはイスラエルの全軍を率いて、リブナから更にラキシュへ向かい、陣を敷いてこれと戦った。
10:32 主がラキシュをイスラエルの手に渡されたので、二日目には占領し、剣をもって町の住民をすべて撃ち、リブナと全く同じようにした。
10:33 そのとき、ゲゼルの王ホラムがラキシュ救援に上って来たが、ヨシュアは彼とその軍をも撃って一人も残さなかった。
10:34 ヨシュアは全イスラエルを率いて、ラキシュから更にエグロンへ向かい、陣を敷いてこれと戦い、
10:35 その日のうちに占領し、剣をもって町を撃ち、全住民をその日のうちに滅ぼし尽くし、ラキシュと全く同じようにした。
10:36 ヨシュアは更に、全イスラエルを率いてエグロンからヘブロンへ上り、これと戦って、
10:37 占領し、剣をもって王と町全体を撃ち、全住民を一人も残さず、エグロンと全く同じようにした。彼はその町とその全住民を滅ぼし尽くした。
10:38 ヨシュアは、全イスラエルを率いてデビルに引き返し、これと戦って、
10:39 占領し、王を捕らえ、すべての町を占領した。剣をもって全住民を撃ち、滅ぼし尽くして一人も残さなかった。デビルとその王に対しても、ヘブロンやリブナとその王と同じようにした。
10:40 ヨシュアは、山地、ネゲブ、シェフェラ、傾斜地を含む全域を征服し、その王たちを一人も残さず、息ある者をことごとく滅ぼし尽くした。イスラエルの神、主の命じられたとおりであった。
10:41 ヨシュアは、カデシュ・バルネアからガザまで、ゴシェン地方一帯を経て、ギブオンまでを征服したのである。
10:42 ヨシュアがただ一回の出撃でこれらの地域を占領し、すべての王を捕らえることができたのは、イスラエルの神、主がイスラエルのために戦われたからである。
10:43 ヨシュアは全イスラエルを率いてギルガルの陣営に凱旋した。

◆ハツォルとその同盟国の征服
11:1 ハツォルの王ヤビンはこの事を聞くと、マドンの王ヨバブ、シムオンの王、アクシャフの王、
11:2 更には北部山地、キネレトの南のアラバ、シェフェラ、西方のドル台地の王たちに使いを送った。
11:3 彼らは、東西両カナン人、アモリ人、ヘト人、ペリジ人、山地のエブス人、ヘルモン山のふもと、ミツパの地に住むヒビ人であった。
11:4 彼らは全軍勢を率いて出動したが、それは浜辺の砂の数ほどの大軍となり、軍馬、戦車も非常に多かった。
11:5 王たちは皆連合し、イスラエルと戦おうと軍を進め、メロムの水場に共に陣を敷いた。

11:7 ヨシュアは全軍を率いてメロムの水場にいる敵を急襲した。
11:8 主が彼らをイスラエルの手に渡されたので、イスラエルはこれを撃ち、大シドンおよびミスレフォト・マイムまで、また東に向かってはミツパ平原まで追撃し、彼らを撃って一人も残さなかった。
11:9 ヨシュアは、彼らに対して主の告げたとおりにし、馬の足の筋を切り、戦車を焼き払った。
11:10 このとき、ヨシュアは引き返して、ハツォルを占領し、その王を剣で打ち殺した。ハツォルは昔、これらの王国の盟主であったからである。
11:11 彼らは、剣をもってハツォルの全住民を撃ち、滅ぼし尽くして息ある者を一人も残さず、ハツォルを火で焼いた。
11:12 ヨシュアは他の王の町々をすべて占領し、王たちを捕らえ、主の僕モーセが命じたように剣をもって彼らを撃ち、これを滅ぼし尽くしたが、
11:13 ヨシュアが焼き払ったのはハツォルだけで、その他の丘の上に建てられた町々をイスラエルは焼き払わなかった。
11:14 これらの町々の分捕り品と家畜はことごとく、イスラエルの人々が自分たちのために奪い取った。彼らはしかし、人間をことごとく剣にかけて撃って滅ぼし去り、息のある者は一人も残さなかった。
11:15 主がその僕モーセに命じられたとおり、モーセはヨシュアに命じ、ヨシュアはそのとおりにした。主がモーセに命じられたことで行わなかったことは何一つなかった。
◆占領地
11:16 ヨシュアの占領地は、この地方全域である。すなわち、山地、ネゲブ全域、ゴシェンの全地域、シェフェラ、アラバ、イスラエルの山地とそれに続くシェフェラ、
11:17 すなわちセイル途上にあるハラク山から北はヘルモン山のふもとにあるレバノンの谷にあるバアル・ガドまでである。ヨシュアはこの地域の王たちを皆捕らえて打ち、処刑した。
11:18 ヨシュアとこれらすべての王たちとの戦いは長い年月にわたり、
11:19 ギブオンに住むヒビ人以外にイスラエルの人々と和を結んだ町は一つもなかった。その他はすべて戦って獲得したのである。
11:20 彼らの心をかたくなにしてイスラエルと戦わせたのは主であるから、彼らは一片の憐れみを得ることもなく滅ぼし尽くされた。主は、モーセに命じたとおりに、彼らを滅ぼし去られた。
11:21 このとき、ヨシュアは攻め込んでアナク人を山地、ヘブロン、デビル、アナブから、ユダの山地およびイスラエルの山地から一掃した。ヨシュアは彼らをその町もろとも滅ぼし尽くしたのである。
11:22 アナク人はそのため、イスラエルの人々の領土から姿を消し、ガザ、ガト、アシュドドだけにわずかに残った。
11:23 ヨシュアはこうして、この地方全域を獲得し、すべて主がモーセに仰せになったとおりになった。ヨシュアは、それをイスラエルに各部族の配分に従って嗣業の土地として与えた。この地方の戦いは、こうして終わった。

◆ヨルダン川の東側で征服された王たち
12:1 イスラエルの人々がヨルダン川の向こう側、すなわち東側で征服し、占領した国々とその王は次のとおりである。アルノン川からヘルモン山まで、東アラバ全域。
12:2 アモリ人の王シホン。ヘシュボンに居を構え、その支配は、アルノン川沿いにある町アロエルから川の中部をヤボク川まで、およびアンモンの人々の国境までのギレアドの半分、
12:3 キネレト湖東岸からアラバの海、すなわち塩の海の東岸、ベト・エシモトを南下してピスガのすそ野の延びている地域に至る東アラバ地方である。
12:4 レファイムの生き残りであるバシャンの王オグ。アシュタロトとエドレイに居を構え、
12:5 その支配は、ヘルモン山、サルカ地方、ゲシュル人、マアカ人に国境を接するバシャン全域およびヘシュボンの王シホンの国と境を接するギレアドの半分である。
12:6 主の僕モーセの率いるイスラエルの人々が二人の王を打ち殺した後、これらの地域は主の僕モーセによってルベン人、ガド人、マナセの半部族に領地として与えられた。
◆ヨルダン川の西側で征服された王たち
12:7 ヨシュアの率いるイスラエルの人々がヨルダン川のこちら側、すなわち西側で征服した国の王は次のとおりである。ヨシュアは、レバノンの谷にあるバアル・ガドからセイル途上にあるハラク山に至る地域をイスラエル各部族にその配分に従って領地として与えた。

◆各部族の領地
13:1 ヨシュアが多くの日を重ねて老人となったとき、主は彼にこう言われた。「あなたは年を重ねて、老人となったが、占領すべき土地はまだたくさん残っている。
13:2 残っている土地は次のとおりである。ペリシテ人の全地域とゲシュル人の全域、
13:3 エジプトの東境のシホルから、北はカナン人のものと見なされているエクロンの境まで。ここには五人のペリシテ人の領主の治めるガザ、アシュドド、アシュケロン、ガト、エクロンの人々がおり、アビム人の領土が
13:4 その南にある。またカナン人の土地全域、シドン人のメアラ、アモリ人の国境アフェカ、
13:5 更にゲバル人の土地、ヘルモン山のふもとバアル・ガドからレボ・ハマトに至るレバノン山東部全域、
13:6 およびレバノン山からミスレフォト・マイムに至る山地の全住民、すべてのシドン人。わたしは、イスラエルの人々のために、彼らすべてを追い払う。あなたはただ、わたしの命じたとおり、それをイスラエルの嗣業の土地として分けなさい。
13:7 この土地を九つの部族とマナセの半部族に嗣業の土地として配分しなさい。ヨルダン川から西の海まで、海沿いの地域をこれに与えなさい。」
13:8 マナセの半部族のほか、ルベン人とガド人は、ヨルダン川の東側にモーセが彼らに与えた嗣業の土地を既に持っていた。それは、主の僕モーセが彼らに与えたもので、
13:9 アルノン川の川べりにあるアロエル、すなわち谷の中の町からディボンに至るメデバの台地全域、
13:10 ヘシュボンを都としたアモリ人の王シホンが治めていたアンモンの人々の国境に至るまでのすべての町、
13:11 ギレアド一帯、ゲシュル人とマアカ人の領土、ヘルモン山一帯、サルカまでのバシャン全域、
13:12 アシュタロトとエドレイを都としたバシャンのオグの王国全体であった。オグはモーセが打ち殺し、追い払ったレファイムの生き残りである。
13:13 しかしイスラエルの人々は、ゲシュル人とマアカ人とを追い出さなかったので、彼らはイスラエルと共にそこに住み、今日に至っている。
13:14 ただ、レビ族には嗣業の土地は与えられなかった。主の約束されたとおり、イスラエルの神、主に燃やしてささげる献げ物が彼の嗣業であった。
◆ルベン族
13:15 モーセがルベンの人々の部族に氏族ごとに分け与え、

13:17 ヘシュボン、その台地の町々、ディボン、バモト・バアル、ベト・バアル・メオン、

13:20 ベト・ペオル、ピスガ山の傾斜地、ベト・エシモト、
13:21 その他、台地のすべての町であって、ヘシュボンを都としたアモリ人の王シホンの王国全体に当たる。モーセはシホンをエビ、レケム、ツル、フル、レバと共に打ち殺した。彼らはかつてミディアンの指導者であったが、シホンの代官となってその王国に住んでいた。
13:22 そのほか、イスラエルの人々は、ベオルの子、占い師バラムを剣で殺した。
13:23 ルベンの人々の領域はヨルダン川の東側地域であった。以上がルベンの人々が氏族ごとに与えられた嗣業の土地であり、町村である。
◆ガド族
13:24 モーセがガド部族、すなわちガドの人々に氏族ごとに分け与え、
13:25 彼らの領域となったのは、ヤゼル、ギレアド地方のすべての町、アンモンの人々の国の半分で、ラバの向かいにあるアロエルまでと、
13:26 ヘシュボンからラマト・ミツパ、ベトニム、マハナイムを経てリデボルの境までである。
13:27 また平野では、ベト・ハラム、ベト・ニムラ、スコト、ツァフォン、かつてヘシュボンの王シホンの王国の一部であり、キネレト湖南端に至るヨルダン川地域、すなわちヨルダン川の東側である。
13:28 以上がガドの人々が氏族ごとに与えられた嗣業の土地であり、町村である。
◆マナセの半部族
13:29 モーセがマナセの半部族に分け与えたので、その氏族ごとにマナセの人々の半部族のものとなった、
13:30 彼らの領域は、マハナイムからバシャン全域、すなわちバシャンの王オグの王国全体、およびバシャンにあるヤイルの集落のすべてである六十の町、
13:31 ギレアド地方の半分、バシャンのオグ王国の町アシュタロト、エドレイに及んだ。これは、マナセの子マキルの子孫すなわちマキルの子孫の半分が氏族に従って所有した。

◆ヨルダン川の西側
14:1 イスラエルの人々が、カナンの土地で嗣業の土地として受け継いだのは、次のとおりである。これは、祭司エルアザルとヌンの子ヨシュアが、イスラエルの人々の諸部族の家長と共に、彼らに嗣業の土地として与えたものである。
14:2 すなわち主がモーセを通して命じられたように、くじで九つ半の部族に嗣業の土地を割り当てた。
14:3 モーセは既に他の二つ半の部族にはヨルダン川の東側に嗣業の土地を与えていた。彼はレビ人には嗣業の土地を彼らの間に与えなかったが、
14:4 ヨセフの子孫がマナセとエフライムの二つの部族になっていた。レビ人は、カナンの土地の中には住むべき町と財産である家畜の放牧地のほか、何の割り当て地も与えられなかった。
14:5 イスラエルの人々は、土地を割り当てるにあたって、主がモーセに命じられたとおりにした。
◆カレブ
14:6 そのころ、ギルガルのヨシュアのもとにユダの人々が来た。その一人ケナズ人エフネの子カレブがこう言った。「主がカデシュ・バルネアでわたしとあなたのことについて神の人モーセに告げられた言葉を、あなたはご存じのはずです。
14:7 主の僕モーセがわたしをカデシュ・バルネアから遣わし、この地方一帯を偵察させたのは、わたしが四十歳のときでした。わたしは思ったとおりに報告しました。
14:8 一緒に行った者たちは民の心を挫きましたが、わたしはわたしの神、主に従いとおしました。
14:9 その日、モーセは誓って、『あなたがわたしの神、主に従いとおしたから、あなたが足を踏み入れた土地は永久にあなたと、あなたの子孫の嗣業の土地になる』と約束しました。
14:10 御覧ください。主がモーセにこの約束をなさって以来四十五年、イスラエルがなお荒れ野を旅した間、主は約束どおりわたしを生き永らえさせてくださいました。今日わたしは八十五歳ですが、
14:11 今なお健やかです。モーセの使いをしたあのころも今も変わりなく、戦争でも、日常の務めでもする力があります。
14:12 どうか主があの時約束してくださったこの山地をわたしにください。あの時、あなたも聞いたように、そこにはアナク人がおり、城壁のある大きな町々がありますが、主がわたしと共にいてくださるなら、約束どおり、彼らを追い払えます。」
14:13 ヨシュアはエフネの子カレブを祝福し、ヘブロンを嗣業の土地として彼に与えた。
14:14 ヘブロンはケナズ人エフネの子カレブの嗣業の土地となって、今日に至っている。彼がイスラエルの神、主に従いとおしたからである。
14:15 ヘブロンはかつてキルヤト・アルバと呼ばれていたが、それはアナク人の中で最も偉大な人物アルバの名によるものであった。この地方の戦いはこうして収まった。

◆ユダ族の境界線
15:1 ユダの人々の部族が氏族ごとにくじで割り当てられた領土は、最も南にあって、エドムと国境を接し、ネゲブのツィンの荒れ野に及んだ。
15:2 この南境は、塩の海の南端の入り江から、
15:3 アクラビムの坂を南に向かい、ツィンを過ぎ、カデシュ・バルネアの南からヘツロンを過ぎ、アダルを経て、カルカへ回り、
15:4 アツモンを通って、エジプトの川に沿って進み、海に達する。これが南境である。
15:5 東境は、塩の海であって、北端のヨルダン川が注ぎ込む河口までである。北境は、この河口すなわち入り江を起点とし、
15:6 ベト・ホグラ、ベト・アラバを北上し、「ルベンの子ボハンの石」を経て、
15:7 アコルの谷からデビルに向かい、更に北上してギルガルに至る。ここから南の川向こうがアドミムの坂である。そこからエン・シェメシュの泉、エン・ロゲルに達し、
15:8 更に、ベン・ヒノムの谷、エブス人の丘、すなわちエルサレムの南側を上り、ヒノムの谷を隔てた山の頂に上る。そこはレファイムの野の北端に当たる。
15:9 この山の頂から下って、ネフトアの泉、エフロン山の廃虚を経て、バアラすなわちキルヤト・エアリムに折れ、
15:10 そこを西に曲がってセイルの山に向かい、更にエアリム山すなわちケサロンの北斜面を経て、ベト・シェメシュに下る。更にティムナ、
15:11 エクロンの北斜面を進み、シクロンを折れ、バアラ山を過ぎ、ヤブネエルを経て、海に達する。
15:12 西境は大海の沿岸である。以上が氏族ごとにユダの人々を囲む境界である。
◆オトニエル
15:13 主の命令に従い、ヨシュアはエフネの子カレブに、ユダの人々の領内のキルヤト・アルバすなわちヘブロンを割り当て地として与えた。アルバはアナク人の先祖である。
15:14 カレブは、アナク人の子孫シェシャイ、アヒマン、タルマイの三氏族をそこから追い出し、
15:15 更にデビルに上り、住民を攻めた。デビルはかつてキルヤト・セフェルと呼ばれていた。
15:16 カレブは、「キルヤト・セフェルを撃って占領した者に娘アクサを妻として与えよう」と約束した。
15:17 カレブの兄弟、ケナズの子オトニエルがそこを占領したので、カレブは娘アクサを妻として彼に与えた。
15:18 彼女は来て、父から畑をもらうようにオトニエルに勧めた。彼女がろばの背から降りると、カレブは、「どうしたのか」と言った。
15:19 彼女は言った。「お祝いをください。わたしにネゲブの地をくださるなら、溜池も添えてください。」彼は上と下の溜池を娘に与えた。

15:60 キルヤト・バアル、すなわちキルヤト・エアリム、ラバ、以上二つの町とそれに属する村。
15:61 荒れ野には、ベト・アラバ、ミディン、セカカ、
15:62 ニブシャン、イル・メラ、エン・ゲディ、以上六つの町とそれに属する村。
15:63 ただし、ユダの人々はエルサレムの住民エブス人を追い出せなかったので、エブス人はユダの人々と共にエルサレムに住んで今日に至っている。

◆ヨセフの一族
16:1 ヨセフの子孫がくじで割り当てられた領土は、エリコに近いヨルダン川、エリコの水の東から荒れ野を経て、山地を越えてベテルに至る。
16:2 そこからルズ、アルキ人の領地アタロトを経て、
16:3 西に下り、ヤフレト人の領地から下ベト・ホロンの地境、更にゲゼルを過ぎ、海に達する。
◆エフライム
16:4 ヨセフの子ら、マナセとエフライムは嗣業の土地を受け継いだ。
16:5 エフライムの子孫が氏族ごとに得た領域は次のとおりである。その嗣業の土地の境は、東のアトロト・アダルから上ベト・ホロンを経て、
16:6 西へ向かう。北境は、ミクメタトから東へ曲がり、タアナト・シロを経てヤノハの東に出、
16:7 そこからアタロト、ナアラ、エリコを経てヨルダン川に達する。
16:8 西境はタプアからカナ川に沿い、海に達する。以上がエフライムの人々の部族が氏族ごとに受け継いだ嗣業の土地である。
16:9 このほか、マナセの人々の嗣業の土地の中にもエフライムの人々に配分された町々とそれに属する村があった。
16:10 彼らがゲゼルに住むカナン人を追い出さなかったので、カナン人はエフライムと共にそこに住んで今日に至っている。ただし、彼らは強制労働に服している。

◆マナセ族
17:1 マナセ部族もくじで領地の割り当てを受けた。マナセはヨセフの長男である。マナセの長男マキルは、ギレアドの父で、戦にたけ、ギレアドとバシャン地方を手に入れた。
17:2 他のマナセの子孫、すなわちアビエゼル、ヘレク、アスリエル、シケム、ヘフェル、シェミダの人々も、氏族ごとに割り当てを受けた。彼らはヨセフの子マナセの子孫であって、氏族ごとの男子である。
17:3 ツェロフハドは、マナセ、マキル、ギレアド、ヘフェルと続く家系に属していたが、彼には息子がなく、娘だけであった。娘たちの名は、マフラ、ノア、ホグラ、ミルカ、ティルツァといった。
17:4 彼女たちは、祭司エルアザル、ヌンの子ヨシュア、および指導者たちの前に進み出て、「主はわたしたちにも親族の間に嗣業の土地を与えるように、既にモーセに命じておられます」と申し立てた。彼女たちは、主の命令に従い、父の兄弟たちの間に嗣業の土地を与えられた。
17:5 マナセ族にはこうして、ヨルダン川の東、ギレアドとバシャン地方のほかに、十の地域が配分された。
17:6 マナセの娘たちが、息子たちと共に嗣業の土地を受け継いだからである。ただしギレアド地方は、他のマナセの子孫のものとなった。
17:7 マナセの領域は、アシェル領からシケムに近いミクメタトに広がり、更に南に延び、ヤシブ・エン・タプアに至った。
17:8 タプア地方はマナセ領に属するが、境界線にあったタプアはエフライムの人々に属した。
17:9 国境は更にカナ川沿いに下っていたが、川の南岸の町々はマナセの町々の中にありながらエフライムに属していた。マナセの国境は、川の北岸に沿い、海に達する。
17:10 すなわち川の南はエフライム領、北はマナセ領であった。西は海がその境となり、北はアシェル領、東はイサカル領と接していた。
17:11 またイサカルおよびアシェル領内でも、ベト・シェアン、イブレアムとそれぞれの周辺村落、ドルおよびエン・ドルの住民とそれぞれの周辺村落、タナク、メギドの住民とそれぞれの周辺村落など三つの台地はマナセに属した。
17:12 マナセの人々はこれらの町を占領できなかったので、カナン人はこの地域に住み続けた。
17:13 イスラエルの人々は強くなってからも、カナン人を強制労働に従事させただけで、徹底的に追い出すことはできなかった。
◆ヨセフの一族の開拓地
17:14 ヨセフの子らがヨシュアに、「あなたはなぜ、ただ一つのくじによる嗣業の土地、一つの割り当てしかくださらないのですか。わたしの民は、主に祝福されて、これほど数多くなりました」と言うと、
17:15 ヨシュアは答えた。「あなたの民の数が多くて、エフライムの山地が手狭なら、森林地帯に入って行き、ペリジ人やレファイム人の地域を開拓するがよい。」
17:16 ヨセフの子らが、「山地だけでは足りません。しかし平地に住むカナン人は、ベト・シェアンとその周辺村落の住民もイズレエル平野の住民も皆、鉄の戦車を持っています」と言うと、
17:17 ヨシュアはヨセフの家、すなわちエフライムとマナセに答えた。「確かにあなたは数も多く、力も強い民となった。あなたの割り当ては、ただ一つのくじに限られてはならない。
17:18 山地は森林だが、開拓してことごとく自分のものにするがよい。カナン人は鉄の戦車を持っていて、強いかもしれないが、きっと追い出すことができよう。」

◆その他の七部族
18:1 イスラエルの人々の共同体全体はシロに集まり、臨在の幕屋を立てた。この地方は彼らに征服されていたが、
18:2 イスラエルの人々の中には、まだ嗣業の土地の割り当てを受けていない部族が七つ残っていた。
18:3 ヨシュアはイスラエルの人々に言った。「あなたたちは、いつまでためらっているのだ。あなたたちの先祖の神、主が既に与えられた土地を取りに行くだけなのだ。
18:4 各部族から三人ずつ出しなさい。わたしは彼らを派遣し、この地方を巡回させ、嗣業の土地の記録を作り、戻って来てもらおう。
18:5 そして、彼らにそれを七つに分割させよう。ただユダは南部の領土に、ヨセフの家は北部の領土にとどまらせよう。
18:6 土地を七つに分割したら、その記録をわたしのところに持って来なさい。わたしたちの神、主の前で、わたしはあなたたちのためにくじを引く。
18:7 しかしレビ人にとっては、主の祭司であることがその嗣業なのだから、あなたたちのうちに割り当て地はない。また、ガド、ルベン、マナセの半部族は既にヨルダン川の向こう、東側に嗣業の土地を受けている。それは主の僕モーセが彼らに与えたものである。」
18:8 その人たちは立って行った。土地の記録を作るため出発する者たちにヨシュアが、「土地を巡回し、記録を作り、戻って来なさい。このシロで、主の前にわたしはあなたたちのためにくじを引こう」と命じ終わると、
18:9 その人たちは出発し、その地方を巡回し、町々を七つの割り当て地に分けて、記録に書き留め、シロの宿営にいるヨシュアのもとに帰った。
18:10 ヨシュアは、主の前で彼らのためにくじを引き、イスラエルの人々に決められた割り当てに従って土地を分配した。
◆ベニヤミン族
18:11 ベニヤミンの人々の部族が氏族ごとにくじを引いた。彼らがくじで割り当てられた領域は、ユダとヨセフの人々の間にあった。
18:12 北境は、ヨルダン川下流からエリコの北斜面に向かい、西方の山地を経て、ベト・アベンの荒れ野に達する。
18:13 そこから、更にルズに進み、ルズの南斜面、すなわちベテルを経て、下ベト・ホロンの南の山のアトロト・オレクに至る。
18:14 そこが西の端となり、境界線は、ベト・ホロンの手前の山から南に下り、ユダの人々の町キルヤト・バアル、すなわちキルヤト・エアリムに至る。
18:15 南境は、キルヤト・エアリムを起点とし、廃虚を経て、ネフトアの泉、
18:16 更にレファイム平野の北、ベン・ヒノムの谷の手前の山すそを下る。ヒノムの谷からエブス人の丘の南側をエン・ロゲルに下る。
18:17 そこから北に向かい、エン・シェメシュ、アドミムの坂の向かいにあるゲリロトを経て、「ルベンの子ボハンの石」に至り、
18:18 更に、アラバに対する北斜面を過ぎてアラバに下り、
18:19 ベト・ホグラの北斜面を経て、塩の海の北の入り江、すなわちヨルダン川の南端に至る。これが南境である。
18:20 そしてヨルダン川が東境になっていた。以上がベニヤミンの人々がその氏族に従って囲まれた境界線に従う嗣業の土地である。
18:21 ベニヤミンの人々の部族の町は、その氏族に従うと次のとおりである。エリコ、ベト・ホグラ、エメク・ケツィツ、

19:1 二番目のくじで割り当てを受けたのはシメオンで、シメオンの人々の部族が氏族ごとに割り当てを受けた。その嗣業の土地はユダの人々の嗣業の土地の間にあった。
19:2 彼らの嗣業の土地は、ベエル・シェバ、シェマ、モラダ、
19:3 ハツァル・シュアル、バラ、エツェム、
19:4 エルトラド、ベトル、ホルマ、
19:5 ツィクラグ、ベト・マルカボト、ハツァル・スサ、
19:6 ベト・レバオト、シャルヘン、以上十三の町とそれに属する村、
19:7 エン・リモン、タカン、エテル、アシャン、以上四つの町とそれに属する村、

◆逃れの町
20:1 主はヨシュアに仰せになった。
20:2 イスラエルの人々に告げなさい。モーセを通して告げておいた逃れの町を定め、
20:3 意図してでなく、過って人を殺した者がそこに逃げ込めるようにしなさい。そこは、血の復讐をする者からの逃れの場所になる。
20:4 これらの町のいずれかに逃げ込む場合、その人は町の門の入り口に立ち、その町の長老たちの聞いている前でその訳を申し立てねばならない。彼らが彼を町に受け入れるなら、彼は場所を与えられ、共に住むことが許される。
20:5 たとえ血の復讐をする者が追って来ても、殺害者を引き渡してはならない。彼がその隣人を殺したのは意図的なものではなく、以前からの恨みによるものでもなかったからである。

21:3 イスラエルの人々は、主の命令に従って、自分たちの嗣業の土地の中から次の町々とその放牧地をレビ人に与えた。
21:4 まず、くじで割り当てを受けたのは、ケハトの諸氏族である。祭司アロンの子孫であるレビ人は、ユダ族、シメオン族、ベニヤミン族から十三の町をくじで得た。
21:5 その他のケハトの人々は、エフライム族、ダン族、マナセの半部族の諸氏族から十の町をくじで得た。

21:27 レビ人の一氏族であるゲルションの子孫に与えられたのは、マナセの半部族からは、殺害者の逃れの町であるバシャンのゴラン、ベエシュテラとそれぞれの放牧地など二つの町、
21:28 イサカル族からは、キシュヨン、ダベラト、
21:29 ヤルムト、エン・ガニムとそれぞれの放牧地など四つの町、
21:30 アシェル族からは、ミシュアル、アブドン、
21:31 ヘルカト、レホブとそれぞれの放牧地など四つの町、
21:32 ナフタリ族からは、殺害者の逃れの町であるガリラヤのケデシュ、ハモト・ドル、カルタンとそれぞれの放牧地など三つの町である。
21:33 ゲルションの人々の氏族ごとの町は、合計十三で、それに属する放牧地があった。
21:34 その他のレビ人、メラリの人々に氏族ごとに与えられたのは、ゼブルン族から、ヨクネアム、カルタ、

21:36 ルベン族からは、殺害者の逃れの町ベツェルのほかヤハツ、
21:37 ケデモト、メファアトとそれぞれの放牧地など四つの町、
21:38 ガド族からは、殺害者の逃れの町ギレアドのラモト、マハナイム、
21:39 ヘシュボン、ヤゼルとそれぞれの放牧地など四つの町である。
21:40 レビ人の諸氏族で、最後に残されていたメラリの人々に氏族ごとにくじで割り当てられた町は合計十二である。
21:41 イスラエルの人々の所有地の中で、レビ人の町は総計四十八で、それに属する放牧地があった。
21:42 どの町も例外なく周囲に放牧地を持っていた。これらの町はみなそうなっていた。
21:43 主が先祖に誓われた土地をことごとくイスラエルに与えられたので、彼らはそこを手に入れ、そこに住んだ。
21:44 主はまた、先祖に誓われたとおり、彼らの周囲を安らかに住めるようにされたので、彼らに立ちはだかる敵は一人もなくなった。主は敵を一人残らず彼らの手に渡された。

22:3 あなたたちは、今日に至るまで長い間、同胞を見捨てず、あなたたちの神、主の命じられた言いつけを守ってきた。
22:4 しかし今や、あなたたちの神、主は約束されたとおり、同胞に安住の地をお与えになったのだから、あなたたちは主の僕モーセから受けたヨルダン川の東側にある自分の所有地の天幕に帰るがよい。
22:5 ただ主の僕モーセが命じた戒めと教えを忠実に守り、あなたたちの神、主を愛し、その道に歩み、その戒めを守って主を固く信頼し、心を尽くし、魂を尽くして、主に仕えなさい。」
22:6 ヨシュアが彼らを祝福して送り出すと、彼らは自分の天幕に帰って行った。
22:7 マナセの半部族には既にモーセがバシャンの地にその所有地を定めていたが、マナセの残る半部族には、ヨシュアが他の同胞諸部族と共にヨルダン川の西側に所有地を与えた。彼らをその天幕に送り出したとき、ヨシュアは祝福して、

22:10 ルベンとガドの人々、およびマナセの半部族は、カナンの土地にあるヨルダン川のゲリロトに着いたとき、そこに一つの祭壇を築いた。それは目立って大きい祭壇であった。
22:11 イスラエルの人々は、ルベンとガドの人々、およびマナセの半部族がカナンの地境、ヨルダン川のイスラエル側のゲリロトに祭壇を築いたとの知らせを聞いた。
22:12 これを聞いたイスラエルの人々は、シロで、イスラエルの人々の共同体全体の集まりを開き、彼らに対して軍を差し向けることにした。
22:13 イスラエルの人々はまず、ギレアド地方にいるルベンとガドの人々、およびマナセの半部族のもとに祭司エルアザルの子ピネハスを遣わした。

22:18 それなのに、お前たちは今日、主に背こうとしている。今日、主に逆らうなら、明日、イスラエルの共同体全体に御怒りが下るであろう。
22:19 もしもお前たちの所有地が汚れているなら、主の幕屋がある主の所有地に渡って来て、わたしたちの間に所有地を持つがよい。わたしたちの神、主の祭壇のほかに、自分たちの祭壇を築いて、主に逆らい、わたしたちに逆らってはならない。
22:20 ゼラの子アカンが滅ぼし尽くしてささげるべきもののことで背いたとき、イスラエルの共同体全体に御怒りが下り、その罪のために息絶えたのは、彼一人だけではなかった。」
22:21 ルベンとガドの人々、およびマナセの半部族は、イスラエルの部隊の長たちに答えて、言った。
22:22 「神よ、主なる神よ。神よ、主なる神よ。神はご存じです。イスラエルも分かってください。もし、これが主に対する裏切りであり、背信であったなら、今日、わたしたちを生かしておかないでください。

23:1 主が周囲のすべての敵を退け、イスラエルに安住の地を与えてから長い年月が流れ、ヨシュアは多くの日を重ね、老人となった。

23:6 だから、右にも左にもそれることなく、モーセの教えの書に書かれていることをことごとく忠実に守りなさい。

23:12 しかし、もしあなたたちが背いて離れ去り、あなたたちのうちに残っているこれらの国民となれ親しんで、婚姻関係を結び、向こうに行ったり、こちらに迎えたりするなら、

23:15 あなたたちの神、主が約束された良いことがすべて、あなたたちに実現したように、主はまた、あらゆる災いをあなたたちにくだして、主があなたたちに与えられたこの良い土地からあなたたちを滅ぼされる。
23:16 もし、あなたたちの神、主が命じられた契約を破り、他の神々に従い、仕え、これにひれ伏すなら、主の怒りが燃え上がり、あなたたちは与えられた良い土地から、速やかに滅び去る。」

◆シケムの契約
24:1 ヨシュアは、イスラエルの全部族をシケムに集め、イスラエルの長老、長、裁判人、役人を呼び寄せた。彼らが神の御前に進み出ると、

24:16 民は答えた。「主を捨てて、ほかの神々に仕えることなど、するはずがありません。

1:1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' assistant, saying:
1:2 "Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them-the children of Israel.
1:3 "Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.
1:4 "From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory.
1:5 "No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.
1:6 "Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.
1:7 "Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.
1:8 "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."
1:10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,
1:11 "Pass through the camp and command the people, saying, 'Prepare provisions for yourselves, for within three days you will cross over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you to possess.' "
1:12 And to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh Joshua spoke, saying,
1:13 "Remember the word which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, 'The Lord your God is giving you rest and is giving you this land.'
1:14 "Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But you shall pass before your brethren armed, all your mighty men of valor, and help them,
1:15 "until the Lord has given your brethren rest, as He gave you, and they also have taken possession of the land which the Lord your God is giving them. Then you shall return to the land of your possession and enjoy it, which Moses the Lord's servant gave you on this side of the Jordan toward the sunrise."
1:16 So they answered Joshua, saying, "All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.
1:17 "Just as we heeded Moses in all things, so we will heed you. Only the Lord your God be with you, as He was with Moses.
1:18 "Whoever rebels against your command and does not heed your words, in all that you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and of good courage."

2:1 Now Joshua the son of Nun sent out two men from Acacia Grove to spy secretly, saying, "Go, view the land, especially Jericho." So they went, and came to the house of a harlot named Rahab, and lodged there.
2:2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, "Behold, men have come here tonight from the children of Israel to search out the country."
2:3 So the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, "Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to search out all the country."
2:4 Then the woman took the two men and hid them. So she said, "Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from.
2:5 "And it happened as the gate was being shut, when it was dark, that the men went out. Where the men went I do not know; pursue them quickly, for you may overtake them."
2:6 (But she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order on the roof.)
2:7 Then the men pursued them by the road to the Jordan, to the fords. And as soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate.
2:8 Now before they lay down, she came up to them on the roof,
2:9 and said to the men: "I know that the Lord has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you.
2:10 "For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed.
2:11 "And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.
2:12 "Now therefore, I beg you, swear to me by the Lord, since I have shown you kindness, that you also will show kindness to my father's house, and give me a true token,
2:13 "and spare my father, my mother, my brothers, my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death."
2:14 So the men answered her, "Our lives for yours, if none of you tell this business of ours. And it shall be, when the Lord has given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you."
2:15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the city wall; she dwelt on the wall.
2:16 And she said to them, "Get to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you. Hide there three days, until the pursuers have returned. Afterward you may go your way."
2:17 So the men said to her: "We will be blameless of this oath of yours which you have made us swear,
2:18 "unless, when we come into the land, you bind this line of scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you bring your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father's household to your own home.
2:19 "So it shall be that whoever goes outside the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we will be guiltless. And whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head if a hand is laid on him.
2:20 "And if you tell this business of ours, then we will be free from your oath which you made us swear."
2:21 Then she said, "According to your words, so be it." And she sent them away, and they departed. And she bound the scarlet cord in the window.
2:22 They departed and went to the mountain, and stayed there three days until the pursuers returned. The pursuers sought them all along the way, but did not find them.
2:23 So the two men returned, descended from the mountain, and crossed over; and they came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all that had befallen them.
2:24 And they said to Joshua, "Truly the Lord has delivered all the land into our hands, for indeed all the inhabitants of the country are fainthearted because of us."

3:1 Then Joshua rose early in the morning; and they set out from Acacia Grove and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they crossed over.
3:2 So it was, after three days, that the officers went through the camp;
3:3 and they commanded the people, saying, "When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it.
3:4 "Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you must go, for you have not passed this way before."
3:5 And Joshua said to the people, "Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you."
3:6 Then Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, "Take up the ark of the covenant and cross over before the people." So they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people.
3:7 And the Lord said to Joshua, "This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.
3:8 "You shall command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, saying, 'When you have come to the edge of the water of the Jordan, you shall stand in the Jordan.' "
3:9 So Joshua said to the children of Israel, "Come here, and hear the words of the Lord your God."
3:10 And Joshua said, "By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and that He will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Hivites and the Perizzites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Jebusites:
3:11 "Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is crossing over before you into the Jordan.
3:12 "Now therefore, take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man from every tribe.
3:13 "And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, the waters that come down from upstream, and they shall stand as a heap."
3:14 So it was, when the people set out from their camp to cross over the Jordan, with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people,
3:15 and as those who bore the ark came to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests who bore the ark dipped in the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks during the whole time of harvest),
3:16 that the waters which came down from upstream stood still, and rose in a heap very far away at Adam, the city that is beside Zaretan. So the waters that went down into the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, failed, and were cut off; and the people crossed over opposite Jericho.
3:17 Then the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; and all Israel crossed over on dry ground, until all the people had crossed completely over the Jordan.

4:1 And it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed over the Jordan, that the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying:
4:2 "Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from every tribe,
4:3 "and command them, saying, 'Take for yourselves twelve stones from here, out of the midst of the Jordan, from the place where the priests' feet stood firm. You shall carry them over with you and leave them in the lodging place where you lodge tonight.' "
4:4 Then Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the children of Israel, one man from every tribe;
4:5 and Joshua said to them: "Cross over before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the Jordan, and each one of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel,
4:6 "that this may be a sign among you when your children ask in time to come, saying, 'What do these stones mean to you?'
4:7 "Then you shall answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever."
4:8 And the children of Israel did so, just as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones from the midst of the Jordan, as the Lord had spoken to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them to the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.
4:9 Then Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood; and they are there to this day.
4:10 So the priests who bore the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished that the Lord had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua; and the people hurried and crossed over.
4:11 Then it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed over, that the ark of the Lord and the priests crossed over in the presence of the people.
4:12 And the men of Reuben, the men of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses had spoken to them.
4:13 About forty thousand prepared for war crossed over before the Lord for battle, to the plains of Jericho.
4:14 On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they had feared Moses, all the days of his life.
4:15 Then the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying,
4:16 "Command the priests who bear the ark of the Testimony to come up from the Jordan."
4:17 Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, "Come up from the Jordan."
4:18 And it came to pass, when the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord had come from the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet touched the dry land, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and overflowed all its banks as before.
4:19 Now the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they camped in Gilgal on the east border of Jericho.
4:20 And those twelve stones which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal.
4:21 Then he spoke to the children of Israel, saying: "When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, 'What are these stones?'
4:22 "then you shall let your children know, saying, 'Israel crossed over this Jordan on dry land';
4:23 "for the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed over,
4:24 "that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever."

5:1 So it was, when all the kings of the Amorites who were on the west side of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had crossed over, that their heart melted; and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the children of Israel.
5:2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, "Make flint knives for yourself, and circumcise the sons of Israel again the second time."
5:3 So Joshua made flint knives for himself, and circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.
5:4 And this is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: All the people who came out of Egypt who were males, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way, after they had come out of Egypt.
5:5 For all the people who came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness, on the way as they came out of Egypt, had not been circumcised.
5:6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people who were men of war, who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they did not obey the voice of the Lord-to whom the Lord swore that He would not show them the land which the Lord had sworn to their fathers that He would give us, "a land flowing with milk and honey."
5:7 Then Joshua circumcised their sons whom He raised up in their place; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way.
5:8 So it was, when they had finished circumcising all the people, that they stayed in their places in the camp till they were healed.
5:9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, "This day I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." Therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal to this day.
5:10 Now the children of Israel camped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight on the plains of Jericho.
5:11 And they ate of the produce of the land on the day after the Passover, unleavened bread and parched grain, on the very same day.
5:12 Then the manna ceased on the day after they had eaten the produce of the land; and the children of Israel no longer had manna, but they ate the food of the land of Canaan that year.
5:13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, "Are You for us or for our adversaries?"
5:14 So He said, "No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, "What does my Lord say to His servant?"
5:15 Then the Commander of the Lord's army said to Joshua, "Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy." And Joshua did so.

6:1 Now Jericho was securely shut up because of the children of Israel; none went out, and none came in.
6:2 And the Lord said to Joshua: "See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor.
6:3 "You shall march around the city, all you men of war; you shall go all around the city once. This you shall do six days.
6:4 "And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark. But the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.
6:5 "It shall come to pass, when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up every man straight before him."
6:6 Then Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, "Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord."
6:7 And he said to the people, "Proceed, and march around the city, and let him who is armed advance before the ark of the Lord."
6:8 So it was, when Joshua had spoken to the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the Lord advanced and blew the trumpets, and the ark of the covenant of the Lord followed them.
6:9 The armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard came after the ark, while the priests continued blowing the trumpets.
6:10 Now Joshua had commanded the people, saying, "You shall not shout or make any noise with your voice, nor shall a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I say to you, 'Shout!' Then you shall shout."
6:11 So he had the ark of the Lord circle the city, going around it once. Then they came into the camp and lodged in the camp.
6:12 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the Lord.
6:13 Then seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord went on continually and blew with the trumpets. And the armed men went before them. But the rear guard came after the ark of the Lord, while the priests continued blowing the trumpets.
6:14 And the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. So they did six days.
6:15 But it came to pass on the seventh day that they rose early, about the dawning of the day, and marched around the city seven times in the same manner. On that day only they marched around the city seven times.
6:16 And the seventh time it happened, when the priests blew the trumpets, that Joshua said to the people: "Shout, for the Lord has given you the city!
6:17 "Now the city shall be doomed by the Lord to destruction, it and all who are in it. Only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.
6:18 "And you, by all means abstain from the accursed things, lest you become accursed when you take of the accursed things, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.
6:19 "But all the silver and gold, and vessels of bronze and iron, are consecrated to the Lord; they shall come into the treasury of the Lord."
6:20 So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
6:21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword.
6:22 But Joshua had said to the two men who had spied out the country, "Go into the harlot's house, and from there bring out the woman and all that she has, as you swore to her."
6:23 And the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab, her father, her mother, her brothers, and all that she had. So they brought out all her relatives and left them outside the camp of Israel.
6:24 But they burned the city and all that was in it with fire. Only the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze and iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord.
6:25 And Joshua spared Rahab the harlot, her father's household, and all that she had. So she dwells in Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
6:26 Then Joshua charged them at that time, saying, "Cursed be the man before the Lord who rises up and builds this city Jericho; he shall lay its foundation with his firstborn, and with his youngest he shall set up its gates."
6:27 So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout all the country.

7:1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass regarding the accursed things, for Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the Lord burned against the children of Israel.
7:2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, "Go up and spy out the country." So the men went up and spied out Ai.
7:3 And they returned to Joshua and said to him, "Do not let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not weary all the people there, for the people of Ai are few."
7:4 So about three thousand men went up there from the people, but they fled before the men of Ai.
7:5 And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men, for they chased them from before the gate as far as Shebarim, and struck them down on the descent; therefore the hearts of the people melted and became like water.
7:6 Then Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.
7:7 And Joshua said, "Alas, Lord God, why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all-to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh, that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan!
7:8 "O Lord, what shall I say when Israel turns its back before its enemies?
7:9 "For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear it, and surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name?"
7:10 So the Lord said to Joshua: "Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face?
7:11 "Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff.
7:12 "Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you.
7:13 "Get up, sanctify the people, and say, 'Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the Lord God of Israel: "There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you."
7:14 'In the morning therefore you shall be brought according to your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which the Lord takes shall come according to families; and the family which the Lord takes shall come by households; and the household which the Lord takes shall come man by man.
7:15 'Then it shall be that he who is taken with the accursed thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.' "
7:16 So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken.
7:17 He brought the clan of Judah, and he took the family of the Zarhites; and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man, and Zabdi was taken.
7:18 Then he brought his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
7:19 Now Joshua said to Achan, "My son, I beg you, give glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession to Him, and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me."
7:20 And Achan answered Joshua and said, "Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I have done:
7:21 "When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it."
7:22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver under it.
7:23 And they took them from the midst of the tent, brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord.
7:24 Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had, and they brought them to the Valley of Achor.
7:25 And Joshua said, "Why have you troubled us? The Lord will trouble you this day." So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones.
7:26 Then they raised over him a great heap of stones, still there to this day. So the Lord turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Achor to this day.

8:1 Now the Lord said to Joshua: "Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed; take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land.
8:2 "And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king. Only its spoil and its cattle you shall take as booty for yourselves. Lay an ambush for the city behind it."
8:3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai; and Joshua chose thirty thousand mighty men of valor and sent them away by night.
8:4 And he commanded them, saying: "Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Do not go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.
8:5 "Then I and all the people who are with me will approach the city; and it will come about, when they come out against us as at the first, that we shall flee before them.
8:6 "For they will come out after us till we have drawn them from the city, for they will say, 'They are fleeing before us as at the first.' Therefore we will flee before them.
8:7 "Then you shall rise from the ambush and seize the city, for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hand.
8:8 "And it will be, when you have taken the city, that you shall set the city on fire. According to the commandment of the Lord you shall do. See, I have commanded you."
8:9 Joshua therefore sent them out; and they went to lie in ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai; but Joshua lodged that night among the people.
8:10 Then Joshua rose up early in the morning and mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.
8:11 And all the people of war who were with him went up and drew near; and they came before the city and camped on the north side of Ai. Now a valley lay between them and Ai.
8:12 So he took about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.
8:13 And when they had set the people, all the army that was on the north of the city, and its rear guard on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.
8:14 Now it happened, when the king of Ai saw it, that the men of the city hurried and rose early and went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at an appointed place before the plain. But he did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.
8:15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
8:16 So all the people who were in Ai were called together to pursue them. And they pursued Joshua and were drawn away from the city.
8:17 There was not a man left in Ai or Bethel who did not go out after Israel. So they left the city open and pursued Israel.
8:18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, "Stretch out the spear that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand." And Joshua stretched out the spear that was in his hand toward the city.
8:19 So those in ambush arose quickly out of their place; they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and they entered the city and took it, and hurried to set the city on fire.
8:20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended to heaven. So they had no power to flee this way or that way, and the people who had fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.
8:21 Now when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that the smoke of the city ascended, they turned back and struck down the men of Ai.
8:22 Then the others came out of the city against them; so they were caught in the midst of Israel, some on this side and some on that side. And they struck them down, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
8:23 But the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.
8:24 And it came to pass when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness where they pursued them, and when they all had fallen by the edge of the sword until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword.
8:25 So it was that all who fell that day, both men and women, were twelve thousand-all the people of Ai.
8:26 For Joshua did not draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
8:27 Only the livestock and the spoil of that city Israel took as booty for themselves, according to the word of the Lord which He had commanded Joshua.
8:28 So Joshua burned Ai and made it a heap forever, a desolation to this day.
8:29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until evening. And as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his corpse down from the tree, cast it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raise over it a great heap of stones that remains to this day.
8:30 Now Joshua built an altar to the Lord God of Israel in Mount Ebal,
8:31 as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses: "an altar of whole stones over which no man has wielded an iron tool." And they offered on it burnt offerings to the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings.
8:32 And there, in the presence of the children of Israel, he wrote on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written.
8:33 Then all Israel, with their elders and officers and judges, stood on either side of the ark before the priests, the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, the stranger as well as he who was born among them. Half of them were in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.
8:34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and the cursings, according to all that is written in the Book of the Law.
8:35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded which Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the strangers who were living among them.

9:1 And it came to pass when all the kings who were on this side of the Jordan, in the hills and in the lowland and in all the coasts of the Great Sea toward Lebanon-the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite-heard about it,
9:2 that they gathered together to fight with Joshua and Israel with one accord.
9:3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,
9:4 they worked craftily, and went and pretended to be ambassadors. And they took old sacks on their donkeys, old wineskins torn and mended,
9:5 old and patched sandals on their feet, and old garments on themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and moldy.
9:6 And they went to Joshua, to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a far country; now therefore, make a covenant with us."
9:7 Then the men of Israel said to the Hivites, "Perhaps you dwell among us; so how can we make a covenant with you?"
9:8 But they said to Joshua, "We are your servants." And Joshua said to them, "Who are you, and where do you come from?"
9:9 So they said to him: "From a very far country your servants have come, because of the name of the Lord your God; for we have heard of His fame, and all that He did in Egypt,
9:10 "and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan-to Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.
9:11 "Therefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, 'Take provisions with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, "We are your servants; now therefore, make a covenant with us." '
9:12 "This bread of ours we took hot for our provision from our houses on the day we departed to come to you. But now look, it is dry and moldy.
9:13 "And these wineskins which we filled were new, and see, they are torn; and these our garments and our sandals have become old because of the very long journey."
9:14 Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the Lord.
9:15 So Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them.
9:16 And it happened at the end of three days, after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors who dwelt near them.
9:17 Then the children of Israel journeyed and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kirjath Jearim.
9:18 But the children of Israel did not attack them, because the rulers of the congregation had sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation complained against the rulers.
9:19 Then all the rulers said to all the congregation, "We have sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel; now therefore, we may not touch them.
9:20 "This we will do to them: We will let them live, lest wrath be upon us because of the oath which we swore to them."
9:21 And the rulers said to them, "Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for all the congregation, as the rulers had promised them."
9:22 Then Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, "Why have you deceived us, saying, 'We are very far from you,' when you dwell near us?
9:23 "Now therefore, you are cursed, and none of you shall be freed from being slaves-woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God."
9:24 So they answered Joshua and said, "Because your servants were clearly told that the Lord your God commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; therefore we were very much afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
9:25 "And now, here we are, in your hands; do with us as it seems good and right to do to us."
9:26 So he did to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they did not kill them.
9:27 And that day Joshua made them woodcutters and water carriers for the congregation and for the altar of the Lord, in the place which He would choose, even to this day.

10:1 Now it came to pass when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it-as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king-and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,
10:2 that they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.
10:3 Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying,
10:4 "Come up to me and help me, that we may attack Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel."
10:5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered together and went up, they and all their armies, and camped before Gibeon and made war against it.
10:6 And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, saying, "Do not forsake your servants; come up to us quickly, save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the mountains have gathered together against us."
10:7 So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.
10:8 And the Lord said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hand; not a man of them shall stand before you."
10:9 Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly, having marched all night from Gilgal.
10:10 So the Lord routed them before Israel, killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, chased them along the road that goes to Beth Horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
10:11 And it happened, as they fled before Israel and were on the descent of Beth Horon, that the Lord cast down large hailstones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than the children of Israel killed with the sword.
10:12 Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel:"Sun, stand still over Gibeon;And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon."
10:13 So the sun stood still,And the moon stopped,Till the people had revengeUpon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.
10:14 And there has been no day like that, before it or after it, that the Lord heeded the voice of a man; for the Lord fought for Israel.
10:15 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
10:16 But these five kings had fled and hidden themselves in a cave at Makkedah.
10:17 And it was told Joshua, saying, "The five kings have been found hidden in the cave at Makkedah."
10:18 So Joshua said, "Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them.
10:19 "And do not stay there yourselves, but pursue your enemies, and attack their rear guard. Do not allow them to enter their cities, for the Lord your God has delivered them into your hand."
10:20 Then it happened, while Joshua and the children of Israel made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they had finished, that those who escaped entered fortified cities.
10:21 And all the people returned to the camp, to Joshua at Makkedah, in peace. No one moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
10:22 Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings to me from the cave."
10:23 And they did so, and brought out those five kings to him from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
10:24 So it was, when they brought out those kings to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the captains of the men of war who went with him, "Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings." And they drew near and put their feet on their necks.
10:25 Then Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage, for thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight."
10:26 And afterward Joshua struck them and killed them, and hanged them on five trees; and they were hanging on the trees until evening.
10:27 So it was at the time of the going down of the sun that Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees, cast them into the cave where they had been hidden, and laid large stones against the cave's mouth, which remain until this very day.
10:28 On that day Joshua took Makkedah, and struck it and its king with the edge of the sword. He utterly destroyed them-all the people who were in it. He let none remain. He also did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
10:29 Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah; and they fought against Libnah.
10:30 And the Lord also delivered it and its king into the hand of Israel; he struck it and all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword. He let none remain in it, but did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
10:31 Then Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish; and they encamped against it and fought against it.
10:32 And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, who took it on the second day, and struck it and all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword, according to all that he had done to Libnah.
10:33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, until he left him none remaining.
10:34 From Lachish Joshua passed to Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it and fought against it.
10:35 They took it on that day and struck it with the edge of the sword; all the people who were in it he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
10:36 So Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, to Hebron; and they fought against it.
10:37 And they took it and struck it with the edge of the sword-its king, all its cities, and all the people who were in it; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon, but utterly destroyed it and all the people who were in it.
10:38 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and they fought against it.
10:39 And he took it and its king and all its cities; they struck them with the edge of the sword and utterly destroyed all the people who were in it. He left none remaining; as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and its king, as he had done also to Libnah and its king.
10:40 So Joshua conquered all the land: the mountain country and the South and the lowland and the wilderness slopes, and all their kings; he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded.
10:41 And Joshua conquered them from Kadesh Barnea as far as Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even as far as Gibeon.
10:42 All these kings and their land Joshua took at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.
10:43 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

11:1 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor heard these things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph,
11:2 and to the kings who were from the north, in the mountains, in the plain south of Chinneroth, in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor on the west,
11:3 to the Canaanites in the east and in the west, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite in the mountains, and the Hivite below Hermon in the land of Mizpah.
11:4 So they went out, they and all their armies with them, as many people as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and chariots.
11:5 And when all these kings had met together, they came and camped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.
11:6 But the Lord said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow about this time I will deliver all of them slain before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire."
11:7 So Joshua and all the people of war with him came against them suddenly by the waters of Merom, and they attacked them.
11:8 And the Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel, who defeated them and chased them to Greater Sidon, to the Brook Misrephoth, and to the Valley of Mizpah eastward; they attacked them until they left none of them remaining.
11:9 So Joshua did to them as the Lord had told him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.
11:10 Joshua turned back at that time and took Hazor, and struck its king with the sword; for Hazor was formerly the head of all those kingdoms.
11:11 And they struck all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them. There was none left breathing. Then he burned Hazor with fire.
11:12 So all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua took and struck with the edge of the sword. He utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.
11:13 But as for the cities that stood on their mounds, Israel burned none of them, except Hazor only, which Joshua burned.
11:14 And all the spoil of these cities and the livestock, the children of Israel took as booty for themselves; but they struck every man with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they left none breathing.
11:15 As the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.
11:16 Thus Joshua took all this land: the mountain country, all the South, all the land of Goshen, the lowland, and the Jordan plain-the mountains of Israel and its lowlands,
11:17 from Mount Halak and the ascent to Seir, even as far as Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings, and struck them down and killed them.
11:18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.
11:19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. All the others they took in battle.
11:20 For it was of the Lord to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that He might utterly destroy them, and that they might receive no mercy, but that He might destroy them, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
11:21 And at that time Joshua came and cut off the Anakim from the mountains: from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.
11:22 None of the Anakim were left in the land of the children of Israel; they remained only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod.
11:23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord had said to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. Then the land rested from war.

12:1 These are the kings of the land whom the children of Israel defeated, and whose land they possessed on the other side of the Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the River Arnon to Mount Hermon, and all the eastern Jordan plain:
12:2 One king was Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon and ruled half of Gilead, from Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, from the middle of that river, even as far as the River Jabbok, which is the border of the Ammonites,
12:3 and the eastern Jordan plain from the Sea of Chinneroth as far as the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea), the road to Beth Jeshimoth, and southward below the slopes of Pisgah.
12:4 The other king was Og king of Bashan and his territory, who was of the remnant of the giants, who dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,
12:5 and reigned over Mount Hermon, over Salcah, over all Bashan, as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and over half of Gilead to the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.
12:6 These Moses the servant of the Lord and the children of Israel had conquered; and Moses the servant of the Lord had given it as a possession to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.
12:7 And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel conquered on this side of the Jordan, on the west, from Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon as far as Mount Halak and the ascent to Seir, which Joshua gave to the tribes of Israel as a possession according to their divisions,
12:8 in the mountain country, in the lowlands, in the Jordan plain, in the slopes, in the wilderness, and in the South-the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites:
12:9 the king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one;
12:10 the king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one;
12:11 the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;
12:12 the king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;
12:13 the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one;
12:14 the king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one;
12:15 the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;
12:16 the king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one;
12:17 the king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one;
12:18 the king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one;
12:19 the king of Madon, one; the king of Hazor, one;
12:20 the king of Shimron Meron, one; the king of Achshaph, one;
12:21 the king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one;
12:22 the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one;
12:23 the king of Dor in the heights of Dor, one; the king of the people of Gilgal, one;
12:24 the king of Tirzah, one-all the kings, thirty-one.

13:1 Now Joshua was old, advanced in years. And the Lord said to him: "You are old, advanced in years, and there remains very much land yet to be possessed.
13:2 "This is the land that yet remains: all the territory of the Philistines and all that of the Geshurites,
13:3 "from Sihor, which is east of Egypt, as far as the border of Ekron northward (which is counted as Canaanite); the five lords of the Philistines-the Gazites, the Ashdodites, the Ashkelonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites;
13:4 "from the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians as far as Aphek, to the border of the Amorites;
13:5 "the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath;
13:6 "all the inhabitants of the mountains from Lebanon as far as the Brook Misrephoth, and all the Sidonians-them I will drive out from before the children of Israel; only divide it by lot to Israel as an inheritance, as I have commanded you.
13:7 "Now therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh."
13:8 With the other half tribe the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses had given them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord had given them:
13:9 from Aroer which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and the town that is in the midst of the ravine, and all the plain of Medeba as far as Dibon;
13:10 all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the children of Ammon;
13:11 Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salcah;
13:12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants; for Moses had defeated and cast out these.
13:13 Nevertheless the children of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maachathites, but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.
13:14 Only to the tribe of Levi he had given no inheritance; the sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as He said to them.
13:15 And Moses had given to the tribe of the children of Reuben an inheritance according to their families.
13:16 Their territory was from Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the ravine, and all the plain by Medeba;
13:17 Heshbon and all its cities that are in the plain: Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon,
13:18 Jahaza, Kedemoth, Mephaath,
13:19 Kirjathaim, Sibmah, Zereth Shahar on the mountain of the valley,
13:20 Beth Peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth-
13:21 all the cities of the plain and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses had struck with the princes of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, who were princes of Sihon dwelling in the country.
13:22 The children of Israel also killed with the sword Balaam the son of Beor, the soothsayer, among those who were killed by them.
13:23 And the border of the children of Reuben was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, the cities and their villages.
13:24 Moses also had given an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the children of Gad according to their families.
13:25 Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer, which is before Rabbah,
13:26 and from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir,
13:27 and in the valley Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan as its border, as far as the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth, on the other side of the Jordan eastward.
13:28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their families, the cities and their villages.
13:29 Moses also had given an inheritance to half the tribe of Manasseh; it was for half the tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families:
13:30 Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair which are in Bashan, sixty cities;
13:31 half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Machir according to their families.
13:32 These are the areas which Moses had distributed as an inheritance in the plains of Moab on the other side of the Jordan, by Jericho eastward.
13:33 But to the tribe of Levi Moses had given no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel was their inheritance, as He had said to them.

14:1 These are the areas which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel distributed as an inheritance to them.
14:2 Their inheritance was by lot, as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe.
14:3 For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe on the other side of the Jordan; but to the Levites he had given no inheritance among them.
14:4 For the children of Joseph were two tribes: Manasseh and Ephraim. And they gave no part to the Levites in the land, except cities to dwell in, with their common-lands for their livestock and their property.
14:5 As the Lord had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did; and they divided the land.
14:6 Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him: "You know the word which the Lord said to Moses the man of God concerning you and me in Kadesh Barnea.
14:7 "I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and I brought back word to him as it was in my heart.
14:8 "Nevertheless my brethren who went up with me made the heart of the people melt, but I wholly followed the Lord my God.
14:9 "So Moses swore on that day, saying, 'Surely the land where your foot has trodden shall be your inheritance and your children's forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.'
14:10 "And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, as He said, these forty-five years, ever since the Lord spoke this word to Moses while Israel wandered in the wilderness; and now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old.
14:11 "As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in.
14:12 "Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said."
14:13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as an inheritance.
14:14 Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.
14:15 And the name of Hebron formerly was Kirjath Arba (Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim). Then the land had rest from war.

15:1 So this was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families: The border of Edom at the Wilderness of Zin southward was the extreme southern boundary.
15:2 And their southern border began at the shore of the Salt Sea, from the bay that faces southward.
15:3 Then it went out to the southern side of the Ascent of Akrabbim, passed along to Zin, ascended on the south side of Kadesh Barnea, passed along to Hezron, went up to Adar, and went around to Karkaa.
15:4 From there it passed toward Azmon and went out to the Brook of Egypt; and the border ended at the sea. This shall be your southern border.
15:5 The east border was the Salt Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan. And the border on the northern quarter began at the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan.
15:6 The border went up to Beth Hoglah and passed north of Beth Arabah; and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben.
15:7 Then the border went up toward Debir from the Valley of Achor, and it turned northward toward Gilgal, which is before the Ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the valley. The border continued toward the waters of En Shemesh and ended at En Rogel.
15:8 And the border went up by the Valley of the Son of Hinnom to the southern slope of the Jebusite city (which is Jerusalem). The border went up to the top of the mountain that lies before the Valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the Valley of Rephaim northward.
15:9 Then the border went around from the top of the hill to the fountain of the water of Nephtoah, and extended to the cities of Mount Ephron. And the border went around to Baalah (which is Kirjath Jearim).
15:10 Then the border turned westward from Baalah to Mount Seir, passed along to the side of Mount Jearim on the north (which is Chesalon), went down to Beth Shemesh, and passed on to Timnah.
15:11 And the border went out to the side of Ekron northward. Then the border went around to Shicron, passed along to Mount Baalah, and extended to Jabneel; and the border ended at the sea.
15:12 The west border was the coastline of the Great Sea. This is the boundary of the children of Judah all around according to their families.
15:13 Now to Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a share among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, namely, Kirjath Arba, which is Hebron (Arba was the father of Anak).
15:14 Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak from there: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.
15:15 Then he went up from there to the inhabitants of Debir (formerly the name of Debir was Kirjath Sepher).
15:16 And Caleb said, "He who attacks Kirjath Sepher and takes it, to him I will give Achsah my daughter as wife."
15:17 So Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.
15:18 Now it was so, when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. So she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, "What do you wish?"
15:19 She answered, "Give me a blessing; since you have given me land in the South, give me also springs of water." So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
15:20 This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families:
15:21 The cities at the limits of the tribe of the children of Judah, toward the border of Edom in the South, were Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur,
15:22 Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah,
15:23 Kedesh, Hazor, Ithnan,
15:24 Ziph, Telem, Bealoth,
15:25 Hazor, Hadattah, Kerioth, Hezron (which is Hazor),
15:26 Amam, Shema, Moladah,
15:27 Hazar Gaddah, Heshmon, Beth Pelet,
15:28 Hazar Shual, Beersheba, Bizjothjah,
15:29 Baalah, Ijim, Ezem,
15:30 Eltolad, Chesil, Hormah,
15:31 Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah,
15:32 Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain, and Rimmon: all the cities are twenty-nine, with their villages.
15:33 In the lowland: Eshtaol, Zorah, Ashnah,
15:34 Zanoah, En Gannim, Tappuah, Enam,
15:35 Jarmuth, Adullam, Socoh, Azekah,
15:36 Sharaim, Adithaim, Gederah, and Gederothaim: fourteen cities with their villages;
15:37 Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal Gad,
15:38 Dilean, Mizpah, Joktheel,
15:39 Lachish, Bozkath, Eglon,
15:40 Cabbon, Lahmas, Kithlish,
15:41 Gederoth, Beth Dagon, Naamah, and Makkedah: sixteen cities with their villages;
15:42 Libnah, Ether, Ashan,
15:43 Jiphtah, Ashnah, Nezib,
15:44 Keilah, Achzib, and Mareshah: nine cities with their villages;
15:45 Ekron, with its towns and villages;
15:46 from Ekron to the sea, all that lay near Ashdod, with their villages;
15:47 Ashdod with its towns and villages, Gaza with its towns and villages-as far as the Brook of Egypt and the Great Sea with its coastline.
15:48 And in the mountain country: Shamir, Jattir, Sochoh,
15:49 Dannah, Kirjath Sannah (which is Debir),
15:50 Anab, Eshtemoh, Anim,
15:51 Goshen, Holon, and Giloh: eleven cities with their villages;
15:52 Arab, Dumah, Eshean,
15:53 Janum, Beth Tappuah, Aphekah,
15:54 Humtah, Kirjath Arba (which is Hebron), and Zior: nine cities with their villages;
15:55 Maon, Carmel, Ziph, Juttah,
15:56 Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah,
15:57 Kain, Gibeah, and Timnah: ten cities with their villages;
15:58 Halhul, Beth Zur, Gedor,
15:59 Maarath, Beth Anoth, and Eltekon: six cities with their villages;
15:60 Kirjath Baal (which is Kirjath Jearim) and Rabbah: two cities with their villages.
15:61 In the wilderness: Beth Arabah, Middin, Secacah,
15:62 Nibshan, the City of Salt, and En Gedi: six cities with their villages.
15:63 As for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.

16:1 The lot fell to the children of Joseph from the Jordan, by Jericho, to the waters of Jericho on the east, to the wilderness that goes up from Jericho through the mountains to Bethel,
16:2 then went out from Bethel to Luz, passed along to the border of the Archites at Ataroth,
16:3 and went down westward to the boundary of the Japhletites, as far as the boundary of Lower Beth Horon to Gezer; and it ended at the sea.
16:4 So the children of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, took their inheritance.
16:5 The border of the children of Ephraim, according to their families, was thus: The border of their inheritance on the east side was Ataroth Addar as far as Upper Beth Horon.
16:6 And the border went out toward the sea on the north side of Michmethath; then the border went around eastward to Taanath Shiloh, and passed by it on the east of Janohah.
16:7 Then it went down from Janohah to Ataroth and Naarah, reached to Jericho, and came out at the Jordan.
16:8 The border went out from Tappuah westward to the Brook Kanah, and it ended at the sea. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim according to their families.
16:9 The separate cities for the children of Ephraim were among the inheritance of the children of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages.
16:10 And they did not drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites to this day and have become forced laborers.

17:1 There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph: namely for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war; therefore he was given Gilead and Bashan.
17:2 And there was a lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh according to their families: for the children of Abiezer, the children of Helek, the children of Asriel, the children of Shechem, the children of Hepher, and the children of Shemida; these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph according to their families.
17:3 But Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but only daughters. And these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
17:4 And they came near before Eleazar the priest, before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the rulers, saying, "The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers." Therefore, according to the commandment of the Lord, he gave them an inheritance among their father's brothers.
17:5 Ten shares fell to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side of the Jordan,
17:6 because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance among his sons; and the rest of Manasseh's sons had the land of Gilead.
17:7 And the territory of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethath, that lies east of Shechem; and the border went along south to the inhabitants of En Tappuah.
17:8 Manasseh had the land of Tappuah, but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim.
17:9 And the border descended to the Brook Kanah, southward to the brook. These cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh was on the north side of the brook; and it ended at the sea.
17:10 Southward it was Ephraim's, northward it was Manasseh's, and the sea was its border. Manasseh's territory was adjoining Asher on the north and Issachar on the east.
17:11 And in Issachar and in Asher, Manasseh had Beth Shean and its towns, Ibleam and its towns, the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, the inhabitants of En Dor and its towns, the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns-three hilly regions.
17:12 Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities, but the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.
17:13 And it happened, when the children of Israel grew strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.
17:14 Then the children of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, "Why have you given us only one lot and one share to inherit, since we are a great people, inasmuch as the Lord has blessed us until now?"
17:15 So Joshua answered them, "If you are a great people, then go up to the forest country and clear a place for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and the giants, since the mountains of Ephraim are too confined for you."
17:16 But the children of Joseph said, "The mountain country is not enough for us; and all the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both those who are of Beth Shean and its towns and those who are of the Valley of Jezreel."
17:17 And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph-to Ephraim and Manasseh-saying, "You are a great people and have great power; you shall not have only one lot,
17:18 "but the mountain country shall be yours. Although it is wooded, you shall cut it down, and its farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots and are strong."

18:1 Now the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of meeting there. And the land was subdued before them.
18:2 But there remained among the children of Israel seven tribes which had not yet received their inheritance.
18:3 Then Joshua said to the children of Israel: "How long will you neglect to go and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers has given you?
18:4 "Pick out from among you three men for each tribe, and I will send them; they shall rise and go through the land, survey it according to their inheritance, and come back to me.
18:5 "And they shall divide it into seven parts. Judah shall remain in their territory on the south, and the house of Joseph shall remain in their territory on the north.
18:6 "You shall therefore survey the land in seven parts and bring the survey here to me, that I may cast lots for you here before the Lord our God.
18:7 "But the Levites have no part among you, for the priesthood of the Lord is their inheritance. And Gad, Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave them."
18:8 Then the men arose to go away; and Joshua charged those who went to survey the land, saying, "Go, walk through the land, survey it, and come back to me, that I may cast lots for you here before the Lord in Shiloh."
18:9 So the men went, passed through the land, and wrote the survey in a book in seven parts by cities; and they came to Joshua at the camp in Shiloh.
18:10 Then Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the Lord, and there Joshua divided the land to the children of Israel according to their divisions.
18:11 Now the lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families, and the territory of their lot came out between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.
18:12 Their border on the north side began at the Jordan, and the border went up to the side of Jericho on the north, and went up through the mountains westward; it ended at the Wilderness of Beth Aven.
18:13 The border went over from there toward Luz, to the side of Luz (which is Bethel) southward; and the border descended to Ataroth Addar, near the hill that lies on the south side of Lower Beth Horon.
18:14 Then the border extended around the west side to the south, from the hill that lies before Beth Horon southward; and it ended at Kirjath Baal (which is Kirjath Jearim), a city of the children of Judah. This was the west side.
18:15 The south side began at the end of Kirjath Jearim, and the border extended on the west and went out to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah.
18:16 Then the border came down to the end of the mountain that lies before the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, which is in the Valley of the Rephaim on the north, descended to the Valley of Hinnom, to the side of the Jebusite city on the south, and descended to En Rogel.
18:17 And it went around from the north, went out to En Shemesh, and extended toward Geliloth, which is before the Ascent of Adummim, and descended to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben.
18:18 Then it passed along toward the north side of Arabah, and went down to Arabah.
18:19 And the border passed along to the north side of Beth Hoglah; then the border ended at the north bay at the Salt Sea, at the south end of the Jordan. This was the southern boundary.
18:20 The Jordan was its border on the east side. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin, according to its boundaries all around, according to their families.
18:21 Now the cities of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, according to their families, were Jericho, Beth Hoglah, Emek Keziz,
18:22 Beth Arabah, Zemaraim, Bethel,
18:23 Avim, Parah, Ophrah,
18:24 Chephar Haammoni, Ophni, and Gaba: twelve cities with their villages;
18:25 Gibeon, Ramah, Beeroth,
18:26 Mizpah, Chephirah, Mozah,
18:27 Rekem, Irpeel, Taralah,
18:28 Zelah, Eleph, Jebus (which is Jerusalem), Gibeath, and Kirjath: fourteen cities with their villages. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.

19:1 The second lot came out for Simeon, for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families. And their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of Judah.
19:2 They had in their inheritance Beersheba (Sheba), Moladah,
19:3 Hazar Shual, Balah, Ezem,
19:4 Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah,
19:5 Ziklag, Beth Marcaboth, Hazar Susah,
19:6 Beth Lebaoth, and Sharuhen: thirteen cities and their villages;
19:7 Ain, Rimmon, Ether, and Ashan: four cities and their villages;
19:8 and all the villages that were all around these cities as far as Baalath Beer, Ramah of the South. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families.
19:9 The inheritance of the children of Simeon was included in the share of the children of Judah, for the share of the children of Judah was too much for them. Therefore the children of Simeon had their inheritance within the inheritance of that people.
19:10 The third lot came out for the children of Zebulun according to their families, and the border of their inheritance was as far as Sarid.
19:11 Their border went toward the west and to Maralah, went to Dabbasheth, and extended along the brook that is east of Jokneam.
19:12 Then from Sarid it went eastward toward the sunrise along the border of Chisloth Tabor, and went out toward Daberath, bypassing Japhia.
19:13 And from there it passed along on the east of Gath Hepher, toward Eth Kazin, and extended to Rimmon, which borders on Neah.
19:14 Then the border went around it on the north side of Hannathon, and it ended in the Valley of Jiphthah El.
19:15 Included were Kattath, Nahallal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem: twelve cities with their villages.
19:16 This was the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families, these cities with their villages.
19:17 The fourth lot came out to Issachar, for the children of Issachar according to their families.
19:18 And their territory went to Jezreel, and included Chesulloth, Shunem,
19:19 Haphraim, Shion, Anaharath,
19:20 Rabbith, Kishion, Abez,
19:21 Remeth, En Gannim, En Haddah, and Beth Pazzez.
19:22 And the border reached to Tabor, Shahazimah, and Beth Shemesh; their border ended at the Jordan: sixteen cities with their villages.
19:23 This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families, the cities and their villages.
19:24 The fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families.
19:25 And their territory included Helkath, Hali, Beten, Achshaph,
19:26 Alammelech, Amad, and Mishal; it reached to Mount Carmel westward, along the Brook Shihor Libnath.
19:27 It turned toward the sunrise to Beth Dagon; and it reached to Zebulun and to the Valley of Jiphthah El, then northward beyond Beth Emek and Neiel, bypassing Cabul which was on the left,
19:28 including Ebron, Rehob, Hammon, and Kanah, as far as Greater Sidon.
19:29 And the border turned to Ramah and to the fortified city of Tyre; then the border turned to Hosah, and ended at the sea by the region of Achzib.
19:30 Also Ummah, Aphek, and Rehob were included: twenty-two cities with their villages.
19:31 This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages.
19:32 The sixth lot came out to the children of Naphtali, for the children of Naphtali according to their families.
19:33 And their border began at Heleph, enclosing the territory from the terebinth tree in Zaanannim, Adami Nekeb, and Jabneel, as far as Lakkum; it ended at the Jordan.
19:34 From Heleph the border extended westward to Aznoth Tabor, and went out from there toward Hukkok; it adjoined Zebulun on the south side and Asher on the west side, and ended at Judah by the Jordan toward the sunrise.
19:35 And the fortified cities are Ziddim, Zer, Hammath, Rakkath, Chinnereth,
19:36 Adamah, Ramah, Hazor,
19:37 Kedesh, Edrei, En Hazor,
19:38 Iron, Migdal El, Horem, Beth Anath, and Beth Shemesh: nineteen cities with their villages.
19:39 This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families, the cities and their villages.
19:40 The seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families.
19:41 And the territory of their inheritance was Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir Shemesh,
19:42 Shaalabbin, Aijalon, Jethlah,
19:43 Elon, Timnah, Ekron,
19:44 Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath,
19:45 Jehud, Bene Berak, Gath Rimmon,
19:46 Me Jarkon, and Rakkon, with the region near Joppa.
19:47 And the border of the children of Dan went beyond these, because the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem and took it; and they struck it with the edge of the sword, took possession of it, and dwelt in it. They called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.
19:48 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.
19:49 When they had made an end of dividing the land as an inheritance according to their borders, the children of Israel gave an inheritance among them to Joshua the son of Nun.
19:50 According to the word of the Lord they gave him the city which he asked for, Timnath Serah in the mountains of Ephraim; and he built the city and dwelt in it.
19:51 These were the inheritances which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel divided as an inheritance by lot in Shiloh before the Lord, at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. So they made an end of dividing the country.

20:1 The Lord also spoke to Joshua, saying,
20:2 "Speak to the children of Israel, saying: 'Appoint for yourselves cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses,
20:3 'that the slayer who kills a person accidentally or unintentionally may flee there; and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.
20:4 'And when he flees to one of those cities, and stands at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declares his case in the hearing of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city as one of them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.
20:5 'Then if the avenger of blood pursues him, they shall not deliver the slayer into his hand, because he struck his neighbor unintentionally, but did not hate him beforehand.
20:6 'And he shall dwell in that city until he stands before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the one who is high priest in those days. Then the slayer may return and come to his own city and his own house, to the city from which he fled.' "
20:7 So they appointed Kedesh in Galilee, in the mountains of Naphtali, Shechem in the mountains of Ephraim, and Kirjath Arba (which is Hebron) in the mountains of Judah.
20:8 And on the other side of the Jordan, by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness on the plain, from the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead, from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan, from the tribe of Manasseh.
20:9 These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel and for the stranger who dwelt among them, that whoever killed a person accidentally might flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood until he stood before the congregation.

21:1 Then the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites came near to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the children of Israel.
21:2 And they spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, "The Lord commanded through Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with their common-lands for our livestock."
21:3 So the children of Israel gave to the Levites from their inheritance, at the commandment of the Lord, these cities and their common-lands:
21:4 Now the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites. And the children of Aaron the priest, who were of the Levites, had thirteen cities by lot from the tribe of Judah, from the tribe of Simeon, and from the tribe of Benjamin.
21:5 The rest of the children of Kohath had ten cities by lot from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, from the tribe of Dan, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh.
21:6 And the children of Gershon had thirteen cities by lot from the families of the tribe of Issachar, from the tribe of Asher, from the tribe of Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.
21:7 The children of Merari according to their families had twelve cities from the tribe of Reuben, from the tribe of Gad, and from the tribe of Zebulun.
21:8 And the children of Israel gave these cities with their common-lands by lot to the Levites, as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses.
21:9 So they gave from the tribe of the children of Judah and from the tribe of the children of Simeon these cities which are designated by name,
21:10 which were for the children of Aaron, one of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the children of Levi; for the lot was theirs first.
21:11 And they gave them Kirjath Arba (Arba was the father of Anak), which is Hebron, in the mountains of Judah, with the common-land surrounding it.
21:12 But the fields of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as his possession.
21:13 Thus to the children of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), Libnah with its common-land,
21:14 Jattir with its common-land, Eshtemoa with its common-land,
21:15 Holon with its common-land, Debir with its common-land,
21:16 Ain with its common-land, Juttah with its common-land, and Beth Shemesh with its common-land: nine cities from those two tribes;
21:17 and from the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its common-land, Geba with its common-land,
21:18 Anathoth with its common-land, and Almon with its common-land: four cities.
21:19 All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their common-lands.
21:20 And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites, the rest of the children of Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot from the tribe of Ephraim.
21:21 For they gave them Shechem with its common-land in the mountains of Ephraim (a city of refuge for the slayer), Gezer with its common-land,
21:22 Kibzaim with its common-land, and Beth Horon with its common-land: four cities;
21:23 and from the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh with its common-land, Gibbethon with its common-land,
21:24 Aijalon with its common-land, and Gath Rimmon with its common-land: four cities;
21:25 and from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Tanach with its common-land and Gath Rimmon with its common-land: two cities.
21:26 All the ten cities with their common-lands were for the rest of the families of the children of Kohath.
21:27 Also to the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, from the other half-tribe of Manasseh, they gave Golan in Bashan with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), and Be Eshterah with its common-land: two cities;
21:28 and from the tribe of Issachar, Kishion with its common-land, Daberath with its common-land,
21:29 Jarmuth with its common-land, and En Gannim with its common-land: four cities;
21:30 and from the tribe of Asher, Mishal with its common-land, Abdon with its common-land,
21:31 Helkath with its common-land, and Rehob with its common-land: four cities;
21:32 and from the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), Hammoth Dor with its common-land, and Kartan with its common-land: three cities.
21:33 All the cities of the Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities with their common-lands.
21:34 And to the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites, from the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with its common-land, Kartah with its common-land,
21:35 Dimnah with its common-land, and Nahalal with its common-land: four cities;
21:36 and from the tribe of Reuben, Bezer with its common-land, Jahaz with its common-land,
21:37 Kedemoth with its common-land, and Mephaath with its common-land: four cities;
21:38 and from the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with its common-land (a city of refuge for the slayer), Mahanaim with its common-land,
21:39 Heshbon with its common-land, and Jazer with its common-land: four cities in all.
21:40 So all the cities for the children of Merari according to their families, the rest of the families of the Levites, were by their lot twelve cities.
21:41 All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty-eight cities with their common-lands.
21:42 Every one of these cities had its common-land surrounding it; thus were all these cities.
21:43 So the Lord gave to Israel all the land of which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and dwelt in it.
21:44 The Lord gave them rest all around, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers. And not a man of all their enemies stood against them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hand.
21:45 Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.

22:1 Then Joshua called the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh,
22:2 and said to them: "You have kept all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you.
22:3 "You have not left your brethren these many days, up to this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the Lord your God.
22:4 "And now the Lord your God has given rest to your brethren, as He promised them; now therefore, return and go to your tents and to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan.
22:5 "But take careful heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul."
22:6 So Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents.
22:7 Now to half the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, but to the other half of it Joshua gave a possession among their brethren on this side of the Jordan, westward. And indeed, when Joshua sent them away to their tents, he blessed them,
22:8 and spoke to them, saying, "Return with much riches to your tents, with very much livestock, with silver, with gold, with bronze, with iron, and with very much clothing. Divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren."
22:9 So the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, which they had obtained according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
22:10 And when they came to the region of the Jordan which is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan-a great, impressive altar.
22:11 Now the children of Israel heard someone say, "Behold, the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh have built an altar on the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region of the Jordan-on the children of Israel's side."
22:12 And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered together at Shiloh to go to war against them.
22:13 Then the children of Israel sent Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest to the children of Reuben, to the children of Gad, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead,
22:14 and with him ten rulers, one ruler each from the chief house of every tribe of Israel; and each one was the head of the house of his father among the divisions of Israel.
22:15 Then they came to the children of Reuben, to the children of Gad, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying,
22:16 "Thus says the whole congregation of the Lord: 'What treachery is this that you have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the Lord, in that you have built for yourselves an altar, that you might rebel this day against the Lord?
22:17 'Is the iniquity of Peor not enough for us, from which we are not cleansed until this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the Lord,
22:18 'but that you must turn away this day from following the Lord? And it shall be, if you rebel today against the Lord, that tomorrow He will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.
22:19 'Nevertheless, if the land of your possession is unclean, then cross over to the land of the possession of the Lord, where the Lord's tabernacle stands, and take possession among us; but do not rebel against the Lord, nor rebel against us, by building yourselves an altar besides the altar of the Lord our God.
22:20 'Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.' "
22:21 Then the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh answered and said to the heads of the divisions of Israel:
22:22 "The Lord God of gods, the Lord God of gods, He knows, and let Israel itself know-if it is in rebellion, or if in treachery against the Lord, do not save us this day.
22:23 "If we have built ourselves an altar to turn from following the Lord, or if to offer on it burnt offerings or grain offerings, or if to offer peace offerings on it, let the Lord Himself require an account.
22:24 "But in fact we have done it for fear, for a reason, saying, 'In time to come your descendants may speak to our descendants, saying, "What have you to do with the Lord God of Israel?
22:25 "For the Lord has made the Jordan a border between you and us, you children of Reuben and children of Gad. You have no part in the Lord." So your descendants would make our descendants cease fearing the Lord.'
22:26 "Therefore we said, 'Let us now prepare to build ourselves an altar, not for burnt offering nor for sacrifice,
22:27 'but that it may be a witness between you and us and our generations after us, that we may perform the service of the Lord before Him with our burnt offerings, with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your descendants may not say to our descendants in time to come, "You have no part in the Lord." '
22:28 "Therefore we said that it will be, when they say this to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say, 'Here is the replica of the altar of the Lord which our fathers made, though not for burnt offerings nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between you and us.'
22:29 "Far be it from us that we should rebel against the Lord, and turn from following the Lord this day, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for grain offerings, or for sacrifices, besides the altar of the Lord our God which is before His tabernacle."
22:30 Now when Phinehas the priest and the rulers of the congregation, the heads of the divisions of Israel who were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and the children of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them.
22:31 Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and the children of Manasseh, "This day we perceive that the Lord is among us, because you have not committed this treachery against the Lord. Now you have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the Lord."
22:32 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the rulers, returned from the children of Reuben and the children of Gad, from the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought back word to them.
22:33 So the thing pleased the children of Israel, and the children of Israel blessed God; they spoke no more of going against them in battle, to destroy the land where the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.
22:34 The children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar, Witness, "For it is a witness between us that the Lord is God."

23:1 Now it came to pass, a long time after the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua was old, advanced in age.
23:2 And Joshua called for all Israel, for their elders, for their heads, for their judges, and for their officers, and said to them: "I am old, advanced in age.
23:3 "You have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations because of you, for the Lord your God is He who has fought for you.
23:4 "See, I have divided to you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from the Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, as far as the Great Sea westward.
23:5 "And the Lord your God will expel them from before you and drive them out of your sight. So you shall possess their land, as the Lord your God promised you.
23:6 "Therefore be very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, lest you turn aside from it to the right hand or to the left,
23:7 "and lest you go among these nations, these who remain among you. You shall not make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause anyone to swear by them; you shall not serve them nor bow down to them,
23:8 "but you shall hold fast to the Lord your God, as you have done to this day.
23:9 "For the Lord has driven out from before you great and strong nations; but as for you, no one has been able to stand against you to this day.
23:10 "One man of you shall chase a thousand, for the Lord your God is He who fights for you, as He promised you.
23:11 "Therefore take careful heed to yourselves, that you love the Lord your God.
23:12 "Or else, if indeed you do go back, and cling to the remnant of these nations-these that remain among you-and make marriages with them, and go in to them and they to you,
23:13 "know for certain that the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations from before you. But they shall be snares and traps to you, and scourges on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land which the Lord your God has given you.
23:14 "Behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth. And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed.
23:15 "Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all the good things have come upon you which the Lord your God promised you, so the Lord will bring upon you all harmful things, until He has destroyed you from this good land which the Lord your God has given you.
23:16 "When you have transgressed the covenant of the Lord your God, which He commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed down to them, then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and you shall perish quickly from the good land which He has given you."

24:1 Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and called for the elders of Israel, for their heads, for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.
24:2 And Joshua said to all the people, "Thus says the Lord God of Israel: 'Your fathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, dwelt on the other side of the River in old times; and they served other gods.
24:3 'Then I took your father Abraham from the other side of the River, led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his descendants and gave him Isaac.
24:4 'To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave the mountains of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.
24:5 'Also I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to what I did among them. Afterward I brought you out.
24:6 'Then I brought your fathers out of Egypt, and you came to the sea; and the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea.
24:7 'So they cried out to the Lord; and He put darkness between you and the Egyptians, brought the sea upon them, and covered them. And your eyes saw what I did in Egypt. Then you dwelt in the wilderness a long time.
24:8 'And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, who dwelt on the other side of the Jordan, and they fought with you. But I gave them into your hand, that you might possess their land, and I destroyed them from before you.
24:9 'Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose to make war against Israel, and sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you.
24:10 'But I would not listen to Balaam; therefore he continued to bless you. So I delivered you out of his hand.
24:11 'Then you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho. And the men of Jericho fought against you-also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. But I delivered them into your hand.
24:12 'I sent the hornet before you which drove them out from before you, also the two kings of the Amorites, but not with your sword or with your bow.
24:13 'I have given you a land for which you did not labor, and cities which you did not build, and you dwell in them; you eat of the vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant.'
24:14 "Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord!
24:15 "And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
24:16 So the people answered and said: "Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods;
24:17 "for the Lord our God is He who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way that we went and among all the people through whom we passed.
24:18 "And the Lord drove out from before us all the people, including the Amorites who dwelt in the land. We also will serve the Lord, for He is our God."
24:19 But Joshua said to the people, "You cannot serve the Lord, for He is a holy God. He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.
24:20 "If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then He will turn and do you harm and consume you, after He has done you good."
24:21 And the people said to Joshua, "No, but we will serve the Lord!"
24:22 So Joshua said to the people, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord for yourselves, to serve Him." And they said, "We are witnesses!"
24:23 "Now therefore," he said, "put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord God of Israel."
24:24 And the people said to Joshua, "The Lord our God we will serve, and His voice we will obey!"
24:25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.
24:26 Then Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. And he took a large stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the Lord.
24:27 And Joshua said to all the people, "Behold, this stone shall be a witness to us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord which He spoke to us. It shall therefore be a witness to you, lest you deny your God."
24:28 So Joshua let the people depart, each to his own inheritance.
24:29 Now it came to pass after these things that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being one hundred and ten years old.
24:30 And they buried him within the border of his inheritance at Timnath Serah, which is in the mountains of Ephraim, on the north side of Mount Gaash.
24:31 Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had known all the works of the Lord which He had done for Israel.
24:32 The bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel had brought up out of Egypt, they buried at Shechem, in the plot of ground which Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for one hundred pieces of silver, and which had become an inheritance of the children of Joseph.
24:33 And Eleazar the son of Aaron died. They buried him in a hill belonging to Phinehas his son, which was given to him in the mountains of Ephraim.
