◆天地の創造
1:1 初めに、神は天地を創造された。
1:2 地は混沌であって、闇が深淵の面にあり、神の霊が水の面を動いていた。
1:3 神は言われた。「光あれ。」こうして、光があった。
1:4 神は光を見て、良しとされた。神は光と闇を分け、
1:5 光を昼と呼び、闇を夜と呼ばれた。夕べがあり、朝があった。第一の日である。
1:6 神は言われた。「水の中に大空あれ。水と水を分けよ。」
1:7 神は大空を造り、大空の下と大空の上に水を分けさせられた。そのようになった。
1:8 神は大空を天と呼ばれた。夕べがあり、朝があった。第二の日である。
1:9 神は言われた。「天の下の水は一つ所に集まれ。乾いた所が現れよ。」そのようになった。
1:10 神は乾いた所を地と呼び、水の集まった所を海と呼ばれた。神はこれを見て、良しとされた。
1:11 神は言われた。「地は草を芽生えさせよ。種を持つ草と、それぞれの種を持つ実をつける果樹を、地に芽生えさせよ。」そのようになった。
1:12 地は草を芽生えさせ、それぞれの種を持つ草と、それぞれの種を持つ実をつける木を芽生えさせた。神はこれを見て、良しとされた。
1:13 夕べがあり、朝があった。第三の日である。
1:14 神は言われた。「天の大空に光る物があって、昼と夜を分け、季節のしるし、日や年のしるしとなれ。
1:15 天の大空に光る物があって、地を照らせ。」そのようになった。
1:16 神は二つの大きな光る物と星を造り、大きな方に昼を治めさせ、小さな方に夜を治めさせられた。
1:17 神はそれらを天の大空に置いて、地を照らさせ、
1:18 昼と夜を治めさせ、光と闇を分けさせられた。神はこれを見て、良しとされた。
1:19 夕べがあり、朝があった。第四の日である。
1:20 神は言われた。「生き物が水の中に群がれ。鳥は地の上、天の大空の面を飛べ。」
1:21 神は水に群がるもの、すなわち大きな怪物、うごめく生き物をそれぞれに、また、翼ある鳥をそれぞれに創造された。神はこれを見て、良しとされた。
1:22 神はそれらのものを祝福して言われた。「産めよ、増えよ、海の水に満ちよ。鳥は地の上に増えよ。」
1:23 夕べがあり、朝があった。第五の日である。
1:24 神は言われた。「地は、それぞれの生き物を産み出せ。家畜、這うもの、地の獣をそれぞれに産み出せ。」そのようになった。
1:25 神はそれぞれの地の獣、それぞれの家畜、それぞれの土を這うものを造られた。神はこれを見て、良しとされた。
1:26 神は言われた。「我々にかたどり、我々に似せて、人を造ろう。そして海の魚、空の鳥、家畜、地の獣、地を這うものすべてを支配させよう。」
1:27 神は御自分にかたどって人を創造された。神にかたどって創造された。男と女に創造された。
1:28 神は彼らを祝福して言われた。「産めよ、増えよ、地に満ちて地を従わせよ。海の魚、空の鳥、地の上を這う生き物をすべて支配せよ。」
1:29 神は言われた。「見よ、全地に生える、種を持つ草と種を持つ実をつける木を、すべてあなたたちに与えよう。それがあなたたちの食べ物となる。
1:30 地の獣、空の鳥、地を這うものなど、すべて命あるものにはあらゆる青草を食べさせよう。」そのようになった。
1:31 神はお造りになったすべてのものを御覧になった。見よ、それは極めて良かった。夕べがあり、朝があった。第六の日である。
2:1 天地万物は完成された。
2:2 第七の日に、神は御自分の仕事を完成され、第七の日に、神は御自分の仕事を離れ、安息なさった。
2:3 この日に神はすべての創造の仕事を離れ、安息なさったので、第七の日を神は祝福し、聖別された。
2:4 これが天地創造の由来である。主なる神が地と天を造られたとき、
2:5 地上にはまだ野の木も、野の草も生えていなかった。主なる神が地上に雨をお送りにならなかったからである。また土を耕す人もいなかった。
2:6 しかし、水が地下から湧き出て、土の面をすべて潤した。
2:7 主なる神は、土（アダマ）の塵で人（アダム）を形づくり、その鼻に命の息を吹き入れられた。人はこうして生きる者となった。
2:8 主なる神は、東の方のエデンに園を設け、自ら形づくった人をそこに置かれた。
2:9 主なる神は、見るからに好ましく、食べるに良いものをもたらすあらゆる木を地に生えいでさせ、また園の中央には、命の木と善悪の知識の木を生えいでさせられた。
2:10 エデンから一つの川が流れ出ていた。園を潤し、そこで分かれて、四つの川となっていた。
2:11 第一の川の名はピションで、金を産出するハビラ地方全域を巡っていた。
2:12 その金は良質であり、そこではまた、琥珀の類やラピス・ラズリも産出した。
2:13 第二の川の名はギホンで、クシュ地方全域を巡っていた。
2:14 第三の川の名はチグリスで、アシュルの東の方を流れており、第四の川はユーフラテスであった。
2:15 主なる神は人を連れて来て、エデンの園に住まわせ、人がそこを耕し、守るようにされた。
2:16 主なる神は人に命じて言われた。「園のすべての木から取って食べなさい。
2:17 ただし、善悪の知識の木からは、決して食べてはならない。食べると必ず死んでしまう。」
2:18 主なる神は言われた。「人が独りでいるのは良くない。彼に合う助ける者を造ろう。」
2:19 主なる神は、野のあらゆる獣、空のあらゆる鳥を土で形づくり、人のところへ持って来て、人がそれぞれをどう呼ぶか見ておられた。人が呼ぶと、それはすべて、生き物の名となった。
2:20 人はあらゆる家畜、空の鳥、野のあらゆる獣に名を付けたが、自分に合う助ける者は見つけることができなかった。
2:21 主なる神はそこで、人を深い眠りに落とされた。人が眠り込むと、あばら骨の一部を抜き取り、その跡を肉でふさがれた。
2:22 そして、人から抜き取ったあばら骨で女を造り上げられた。主なる神が彼女を人のところへ連れて来られると、
2:23 人は言った。「ついに、これこそ／わたしの骨の骨／わたしの肉の肉。これをこそ、女（イシャー）と呼ぼう／まさに、男（イシュ）から取られたものだから。」
2:24 こういうわけで、男は父母を離れて女と結ばれ、二人は一体となる。
2:25 人と妻は二人とも裸であったが、恥ずかしがりはしなかった。
◆蛇の誘惑
3:1 主なる神が造られた野の生き物のうちで、最も賢いのは蛇であった。蛇は女に言った。「園のどの木からも食べてはいけない、などと神は言われたのか。」
3:2 女は蛇に答えた。「わたしたちは園の木の果実を食べてもよいのです。
3:3 でも、園の中央に生えている木の果実だけは、食べてはいけない、触れてもいけない、死んではいけないから、と神様はおっしゃいました。」
3:4 蛇は女に言った。「決して死ぬことはない。
3:5 それを食べると、目が開け、神のように善悪を知るものとなることを神はご存じなのだ。」
3:6 女が見ると、その木はいかにもおいしそうで、目を引き付け、賢くなるように唆していた。女は実を取って食べ、一緒にいた男にも渡したので、彼も食べた。
3:7 二人の目は開け、自分たちが裸であることを知り、二人はいちじくの葉をつづり合わせ、腰を覆うものとした。
3:8 その日、風の吹くころ、主なる神が園の中を歩く音が聞こえてきた。アダムと女が、主なる神の顔を避けて、園の木の間に隠れると、
3:9 主なる神はアダムを呼ばれた。「どこにいるのか。」
3:10 彼は答えた。「あなたの足音が園の中に聞こえたので、恐ろしくなり、隠れております。わたしは裸ですから。」
3:11 神は言われた。「お前が裸であることを誰が告げたのか。取って食べるなと命じた木から食べたのか。」
3:12 アダムは答えた。「あなたがわたしと共にいるようにしてくださった女が、木から取って与えたので、食べました。」
3:13 主なる神は女に向かって言われた。「何ということをしたのか。」女は答えた。「蛇がだましたので、食べてしまいました。」
3:14 主なる神は、蛇に向かって言われた。「このようなことをしたお前は／あらゆる家畜、あらゆる野の獣の中で／呪われるものとなった。お前は、生涯這いまわり、塵を食らう。
3:15 お前と女、お前の子孫と女の子孫の間に／わたしは敵意を置く。彼はお前の頭を砕き／お前は彼のかかとを砕く。」
3:16 神は女に向かって言われた。「お前のはらみの苦しみを大きなものにする。お前は、苦しんで子を産む。お前は男を求め／彼はお前を支配する。」
3:17 神はアダムに向かって言われた。「お前は女の声に従い／取って食べるなと命じた木から食べた。お前のゆえに、土は呪われるものとなった。お前は、生涯食べ物を得ようと苦しむ。
3:18 お前に対して／土は茨とあざみを生えいでさせる／野の草を食べようとするお前に。
3:19 お前は顔に汗を流してパンを得る／土に返るときまで。お前がそこから取られた土に。塵にすぎないお前は塵に返る。」
3:20 アダムは女をエバ（命）と名付けた。彼女がすべて命あるものの母となったからである。
3:21 主なる神は、アダムと女に皮の衣を作って着せられた。
3:22 主なる神は言われた。「人は我々の一人のように、善悪を知る者となった。今は、手を伸ばして命の木からも取って食べ、永遠に生きる者となるおそれがある。」
3:23 主なる神は、彼をエデンの園から追い出し、彼に、自分がそこから取られた土を耕させることにされた。
3:24 こうしてアダムを追放し、命の木に至る道を守るために、エデンの園の東にケルビムと、きらめく剣の炎を置かれた。
◆カインとアベル
4:1 さて、アダムは妻エバを知った。彼女は身ごもってカインを産み、「わたしは主によって男子を得た」と言った。
4:2 彼女はまたその弟アベルを産んだ。アベルは羊を飼う者となり、カインは土を耕す者となった。
4:3 時を経て、カインは土の実りを主のもとに献げ物として持って来た。
4:4 アベルは羊の群れの中から肥えた初子を持って来た。主はアベルとその献げ物に目を留められたが、
4:5 カインとその献げ物には目を留められなかった。カインは激しく怒って顔を伏せた。
4:6 主はカインに言われた。「どうして怒るのか。どうして顔を伏せるのか。
4:7 もしお前が正しいのなら、顔を上げられるはずではないか。正しくないなら、罪は戸口で待ち伏せており、お前を求める。お前はそれを支配せねばならない。」
4:8 カインが弟アベルに言葉をかけ、二人が野原に着いたとき、カインは弟アベルを襲って殺した。
4:9 主はカインに言われた。「お前の弟アベルは、どこにいるのか。」カインは答えた。「知りません。わたしは弟の番人でしょうか。」
4:10 主は言われた。「何ということをしたのか。お前の弟の血が土の中からわたしに向かって叫んでいる。
4:11 今、お前は呪われる者となった。お前が流した弟の血を、口を開けて飲み込んだ土よりもなお、呪われる。
4:12 土を耕しても、土はもはやお前のために作物を産み出すことはない。お前は地上をさまよい、さすらう者となる。」
4:13 カインは主に言った。「わたしの罪は重すぎて負いきれません。
4:14 今日、あなたがわたしをこの土地から追放なさり、わたしが御顔から隠されて、地上をさまよい、さすらう者となってしまえば、わたしに出会う者はだれであれ、わたしを殺すでしょう。」
4:15 主はカインに言われた。「いや、それゆえカインを殺す者は、だれであれ七倍の復讐を受けるであろう。」主はカインに出会う者がだれも彼を撃つことのないように、カインにしるしを付けられた。
4:16 カインは主の前を去り、エデンの東、ノド（さすらい）の地に住んだ。
4:17 カインは妻を知った。彼女は身ごもってエノクを産んだ。カインは町を建てていたが、その町を息子の名前にちなんでエノクと名付けた。
4:18 エノクにはイラドが生まれた。イラドはメフヤエルの父となり、メフヤエルはメトシャエルの父となり、メトシャエルはレメクの父となった。
4:19 レメクは二人の妻をめとった。一人はアダ、もう一人はツィラといった。
4:20 アダはヤバルを産んだ。ヤバルは、家畜を飼い天幕に住む者の先祖となった。
4:21 その弟はユバルといい、竪琴や笛を奏でる者すべての先祖となった。
4:22 ツィラもまた、トバル・カインを産んだ。彼は青銅や鉄でさまざまの道具を作る者となった。トバル・カインの妹はナアマといった。
4:23 さて、レメクは妻に言った。「アダとツィラよ、わが声を聞け。レメクの妻たちよ、わが言葉に耳を傾けよ。わたしは傷の報いに男を殺し／打ち傷の報いに若者を殺す。
4:24 カインのための復讐が七倍なら／レメクのためには七十七倍。」
4:25 再び、アダムは妻を知った。彼女は男の子を産み、セトと名付けた。カインがアベルを殺したので、神が彼に代わる子を授け（シャト）られたからである。
4:26 セトにも男の子が生まれた。彼はその子をエノシュと名付けた。主の御名を呼び始めたのは、この時代のことである。
1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
1:2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
1:3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.
1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.
1:5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
1:6 Then God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters."
1:7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so.
1:8 And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.
1:9 Then God said, "Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear"; and it was so.
1:10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
1:11 Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth"; and it was so.
1:12 And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
1:13 So the evening and the morning were the third day.
1:14 Then God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years;
1:15 "and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth"; and it was so.
1:16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also.
1:17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth,
1:18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
1:19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
1:20 Then God said, "Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens."
1:21 So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
1:22 And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth."
1:23 So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
1:24 Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind"; and it was so.
1:25 And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
1:26 Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
1:27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
1:28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."
1:29 And God said, "See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.
1:30 "Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food"; and it was so.
1:31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished.
2:2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
2:3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
2:4 This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
2:5 before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground;
2:6 but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.
2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
2:8 The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.
2:9 And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
2:10 Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads.
2:11 The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
2:12 And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there.
2:13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush.
2:14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
2:15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.
2:16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;
2:17 "but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."
2:18 And the Lord God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him."
2:19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.
2:20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
2:21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.
2:22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
2:23 And Adam said:"This is now bone of my bonesAnd flesh of my flesh;She shall be called Woman,Because she was taken out of Man."
2:24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
2:25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
3:1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?"
3:2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;
3:3 "but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.' "
3:4 Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die.
3:5 "For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
3:6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
3:7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.
3:8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
3:9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?"
3:10 So he said, "I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself."
3:11 And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?"
3:12 Then the man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate."
3:13 And the Lord God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."
3:14 So the Lord God said to the serpent:"Because you have done this,You are cursed more than all cattle,And more than every beast of the field;On your belly you shall go,And you shall eat dustAll the days of your life.
3:15 And I will put enmityBetween you and the woman,And between your seed and her Seed;He shall bruise your head,And you shall bruise His heel."
3:16 To the woman He said:"I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;In pain you shall bring forth children;Your desire shall be for your husband,And he shall rule over you."
3:17 Then to Adam He said, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it':"Cursed is the ground for your sake;In toil you shall eat of itAll the days of your life.
3:18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,And you shall eat the herb of the field.
3:19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat breadTill you return to the ground,For out of it you were taken;For dust you are,And to dust you shall return."
3:20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
3:21 Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.
3:22 Then the Lord God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever"-
3:23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.
3:24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
4:1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, "I have acquired a man from the Lord."
4:2 Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
4:3 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord.
4:4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering,
4:5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
4:6 So the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
4:7 "If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it."
4:8 Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
4:9 Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"
4:10 And He said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground.
4:11 "So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
4:12 "When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth."
4:13 And Cain said to the Lord, "My punishment is greater than I can bear!
4:14 "Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me."
4:15 And the Lord said to him, "Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold." And the Lord set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.
4:16 Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden.
4:17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son-Enoch.
4:18 To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael, and Mehujael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamech.
4:19 Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.
4:20 And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
4:21 His brother's name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute.
4:22 And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.
4:23 Then Lamech said to his wives:"Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech!For I have killed a man for wounding me,Even a young man for hurting me.
4:24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold,Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold."
4:25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, "For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed."
