1:1 士師が世を治めていたころ、飢饉が国を襲ったので、ある人が妻と二人の息子を連れて、ユダのベツレヘムからモアブの野に移り住んだ。
1:2 その人は名をエリメレク、妻はナオミ、二人の息子はマフロンとキルヨンといい、ユダのベツレヘム出身のエフラタ族の者であった。彼らはモアブの野に着き、そこに住んだ。
1:3 夫エリメレクは、ナオミと二人の息子を残して死んだ。
1:4 息子たちはその後、モアブの女を妻とした。一人はオルパ、もう一人はルツといった。十年ほどそこに暮らしたが、
1:5 マフロンとキルヨンの二人も死に、ナオミは夫と二人の息子に先立たれ、一人残された。
1:6 ナオミは、モアブの野を去って国に帰ることにし、嫁たちも従った。主がその民を顧み、食べ物をお与えになったということを彼女はモアブの野で聞いたのである。
1:7 ナオミは住み慣れた場所を後にし、二人の嫁もついて行った。
◆ルツの決意
1:7 故国ユダに帰る道すがら、
1:8 ナオミは二人の嫁に言った。「自分の里に帰りなさい。あなたたちは死んだ息子にもわたしにもよく尽くしてくれた。どうか主がそれに報い、あなたたちに慈しみを垂れてくださいますように。
1:9 どうか主がそれぞれに新しい嫁ぎ先を与え、あなたたちが安らぎを得られますように。」ナオミが二人に別れの口づけをすると、二人は声をあげて泣いて、
1:10 言った。「いいえ、御一緒にあなたの民のもとへ帰ります。」
1:11 ナオミは言った。「わたしの娘たちよ、帰りなさい。どうしてついて来るのですか。あなたたちの夫になるような子供がわたしの胎内にまだいるとでも思っているのですか。
1:12 わたしの娘たちよ、帰りなさい。わたしはもう年をとって、再婚などできはしません。たとえ、まだ望みがあると考えて、今夜にでもだれかのもとに嫁ぎ、子供を産んだとしても、
1:13 その子たちが大きくなるまであなたたちは待つつもりですか。それまで嫁がずに過ごすつもりですか。わたしの娘たちよ、それはいけません。あなたたちよりもわたしの方がはるかにつらいのです。主の御手がわたしに下されたのですから。」
1:14 二人はまた声をあげて泣いた。オルパはやがて、しゅうとめに別れの口づけをしたが、ルツはすがりついて離れなかった。
1:15 ナオミは言った。「あのとおり、あなたの相嫁は自分の民、自分の神のもとへ帰って行こうとしている。あなたも後を追って行きなさい。」
1:16 ルツは言った。「あなたを見捨て、あなたに背を向けて帰れなどと、そんなひどいことを強いないでください。わたしは、あなたの行かれる所に行き／お泊まりになる所に泊まります。あなたの民はわたしの民／あなたの神はわたしの神。
1:17 あなたの亡くなる所でわたしも死に／そこに葬られたいのです。死んでお別れするのならともかく、そのほかのことであなたを離れるようなことをしたなら、主よ、どうかわたしを幾重にも罰してください。」
1:18 同行の決意が固いのを見て、ナオミはルツを説き伏せることをやめた。
1:19 二人は旅を続け、ついにベツレヘムに着いた。
◆うつろな帰国
1:19 ベツレヘムに着いてみると、町中が二人のことでどよめき、女たちが、ナオミさんではありませんかと声をかけてくると、
1:20 ナオミは言った。「どうか、ナオミ（快い）などと呼ばないで、マラ（苦い）と呼んでください。全能者がわたしをひどい目に遭わせたのです。
1:21 出て行くときは、満たされていたわたしを／主はうつろにして帰らせたのです。なぜ、快い（ナオミ）などと呼ぶのですか。主がわたしを悩ませ／全能者がわたしを不幸に落とされたのに。」
1:22 ナオミはこうして、モアブ生まれの嫁ルツを連れてモアブの野を去り、帰って来た。二人がベツレヘムに着いたのは、大麦の刈り入れの始まるころであった。

◆ボアズの厚意
2:1 ナオミの夫エリメレクの一族には一人の有力な親戚がいて、その名をボアズといった。
2:2 モアブの女ルツがナオミに、「畑に行ってみます。だれか厚意を示してくださる方の後ろで、落ち穂を拾わせてもらいます」と言うと、ナオミは、「わたしの娘よ、行っておいで」と言った。
2:3 ルツは出かけて行き、刈り入れをする農夫たちの後について畑で落ち穂を拾ったが、そこはたまたまエリメレクの一族のボアズが所有する畑地であった。
2:4 ボアズがベツレヘムからやって来て、農夫たちに、「主があなたたちと共におられますように」と言うと、彼らも、「主があなたを祝福してくださいますように」と言った。
2:5 ボアズが農夫を監督している召し使いの一人に、そこの若い女は誰の娘かと聞いた。
2:6 召し使いは答えた。「あの人は、モアブの野からナオミと一緒に戻ったモアブの娘です。
2:7 『刈り入れをする人たちの後について麦束の間で落ち穂を拾い集めさせてください』と願い出て、朝から今までずっと立ち通しで働いておりましたが、今、小屋で一息入れているところです。」
2:8 ボアズはルツに言った。「わたしの娘よ、よく聞きなさい。よその畑に落ち穂を拾いに行くことはない。ここから離れることなく、わたしのところの女たちと一緒にここにいなさい。
2:9 刈り入れをする畑を確かめておいて、女たちについて行きなさい。若い者には邪魔をしないように命じておこう。喉が渇いたら、水がめの所へ行って、若い者がくんでおいた水を飲みなさい。」
2:10 ルツは、顔を地につけ、ひれ伏して言った。「よそ者のわたしにこれほど目をかけてくださるとは。厚意を示してくださるのは、なぜですか。」
2:11 ボアズは答えた。「主人が亡くなった後も、しゅうとめに尽くしたこと、両親と生まれ故郷を捨てて、全く見も知らぬ国に来たことなど、何もかも伝え聞いていました。
2:12 どうか、主があなたの行いに豊かに報いてくださるように。イスラエルの神、主がその御翼のもとに逃れて来たあなたに十分に報いてくださるように。」
2:13 ルツは言った。「わたしの主よ。どうぞこれからも厚意を示してくださいますように。あなたのはしための一人にも及ばぬこのわたしですのに、心に触れる言葉をかけていただいて、本当に慰められました。」
2:14 食事のとき、ボアズはルツに声をかけた。「こちらに来て、パンを少し食べなさい、一切れずつ酢に浸して。」ルツが刈り入れをする農夫たちのそばに腰を下ろすと、ボアズは炒り麦をつかんで与えた。ルツは食べ、飽き足りて残すほどであった。
2:15 ルツが腰を上げ、再び落ち穂を拾い始めようとすると、ボアズは若者に命じた。「麦束の間でもあの娘には拾わせるがよい。止めてはならぬ。
2:16 それだけでなく、刈り取った束から穂を抜いて落としておくのだ。あの娘がそれを拾うのをとがめてはならぬ。」
2:17 ルツはこうして日が暮れるまで畑で落ち穂を拾い集めた。集めた穂を打って取れた大麦は一エファほどにもなった。
2:18 それを背負って町に帰ると、しゅうとめは嫁が拾い集めてきたものに目をみはった。ルツは飽き足りて残した食べ物も差し出した。
2:19 しゅうとめがルツに、「今日は一体どこで落ち穂を拾い集めたのですか。どこで働いてきたのですか。あなたに目をかけてくださった方に祝福がありますように」と言うと、ルツは、誰のところで働いたかをしゅうとめに報告して言った。「今日働かせてくださった方は名をボアズと言っておられました。」
2:20 ナオミは嫁に言った。「どうか、生きている人にも死んだ人にも慈しみを惜しまれない主が、その人を祝福してくださるように。」ナオミは更に続けた。「その人はわたしたちと縁続きの人です。わたしたちの家を絶やさないようにする責任のある人の一人です。」
2:21 モアブの女ルツは言った。「その方はわたしに、『うちの刈り入れが全部済むまで、うちの若者から決して離れないでいなさい』と言ってくださいました。」
2:22 ナオミは嫁ルツに答えた。「わたしの娘よ、すばらしいことです。あそこで働く女たちと一緒に畑に行けるとは。よその畑で、だれかからひどい目に遭わされることもないし。」
2:23 ルツはこうして、大麦と小麦の刈り入れが終わるまで、ボアズのところで働く女たちから離れることなく落ち穂を拾った。
◆婚約
2:23 ルツはしゅうとめと一緒に暮らしていたが、

3:1 しゅうとめのナオミが言った。「わたしの娘よ、わたしはあなたが幸せになる落ち着き先を探してきました。
3:2 あなたが一緒に働いてきた女たちの雇い主ボアズはわたしたちの親戚です。あの人は今晩、麦打ち場で大麦をふるい分けるそうです。
3:3 体を洗って香油を塗り、肩掛けを羽織って麦打ち場に下って行きなさい。ただあの人が食事を済ませ、飲み終わるまでは気づかれないようにしなさい。
3:4 あの人が休むとき、その場所を見届けておいて、後でそばへ行き、あの人の衣の裾で身を覆って横になりなさい。その後すべきことは、あの人が教えてくれるでしょう。」
3:5 ルツは、「言われるとおりにいたします」と言い、
3:6 麦打ち場に下って行き、しゅうとめに命じられたとおりにした。
3:7 ボアズは食事をし、飲み終わると心地よくなって、山と積まれた麦束の端に身を横たえた。ルツは忍び寄り、彼の衣の裾で身を覆って横になった。
3:8 夜半になってボアズは寒気がし、手探りで覆いを捜した。見ると、一人の女が足もとに寝ていた。
3:9 「お前は誰だ」とボアズが言うと、ルツは答えた。「わたしは、あなたのはしためルツです。どうぞあなたの衣の裾を広げて、このはしためを覆ってください。あなたは家を絶やさぬ責任のある方です。」
3:10 ボアズは言った。「わたしの娘よ。どうかあなたに主の祝福があるように。あなたは、若者なら、富のあるなしにかかわらず追いかけるというようなことをしなかった。今あなたが示した真心は、今までの真心よりまさっています。
3:11 わたしの娘よ、心配しなくていい。きっと、あなたが言うとおりにします。この町のおもだった人は皆、あなたが立派な婦人であることをよく知っている。
3:12 確かにわたしも家を絶やさぬ責任のある人間ですが、実はわたし以上にその責任のある人がいる。
3:13 今夜はここで過ごしなさい。明日の朝その人が責任を果たすというのならそうさせよう。しかし、それを好まないなら、主は生きておられる。わたしが責任を果たします。さあ、朝まで休みなさい。」
3:14 ルツは、夜が明けるまでボアズの足もとで休んだ。ルツはまだ人の見分けのつかない暗いうちに起きた。麦打ち場に彼女の来たことが人に知られてはならない、とボアズが考えたからである。
3:15 ボアズは言った。「羽織ってきた肩掛けを出して、しっかりつかんでいなさい。」ルツがしっかりとつかんだ肩掛けの中に大麦を六杯量ってルツに背負わせると、ボアズは町へ戻って行った。
3:16 ルツがしゅうとめのところへ帰ると、ナオミは、「娘よ、どうでしたか」と尋ねた。ルツはボアズがしてくれたことをもれなく伝えてから、
3:17 「この六杯の大麦は、あなたのしゅうとめのところへ手ぶらで帰すわけにはいかないとおっしゃって、あの方がくださったのです」と言うと、
3:18 ナオミは言った。「わたしの娘よ、成り行きがはっきりするまでじっとしていなさい。あの人は、今日中に決着がつかなければ、落ち着かないでしょう。」

◆交渉
4:1 ボアズが町の門のところへ上って行って座ると、折よく、ボアズが話していた当の親戚の人が通り過ぎようとした。「引き返してここにお座りください」と言うと、その人は引き返してきて座った。
4:2 ボアズは町の長老のうちから十人を選び、ここに座ってくださいと頼んだので、彼らも座った。
4:3 ボアズはその親戚の人に言った。「モアブの野から帰って来たナオミが、わたしたちの一族エリメレクの所有する畑地を手放そうとしています。
4:4 それでわたしの考えをお耳に入れたいと思ったのです。もしあなたに責任を果たすおつもりがあるのでしたら、この裁きの座にいる人々と民の長老たちの前で買い取ってください。もし責任を果たせないのでしたら、わたしにそう言ってください。それならわたしが考えます。責任を負っている人はあなたのほかになく、わたしはその次の者ですから。」「それではわたしがその責任を果たしましょう」と彼が言うと、
4:5 ボアズは続けた。「あなたがナオミの手から畑地を買い取るときには、亡くなった息子の妻であるモアブの婦人ルツも引き取らなければなりません。故人の名をその嗣業の土地に再興するためです。」
4:6 すると親戚の人は言った。「そこまで責任を負うことは、わたしにはできかねます。それではわたしの嗣業を損なうことになります。親族としてわたしが果たすべき責任をあなたが果たしてくださいませんか。そこまで責任を負うことは、わたしにはできかねます。」
4:7 かつてイスラエルでは、親族としての責任の履行や譲渡にあたって、一切の手続きを認証するためには、当事者が自分の履物を脱いで相手に渡すことになっていた。これが、イスラエルにおける認証の手続きであった。
4:8 その親戚の人は、「どうぞあなたがその人をお引き取りください」とボアズに言って、履物を脱いだ。
4:9 ボアズはそこで、長老とすべての民に言った。「あなたがたは、今日、わたしがエリメレクとキルヨンとマフロンの遺産をことごとくナオミの手から買い取ったことの証人になったのです。
4:10 また、わたしはマフロンの妻であったモアブの婦人ルツも引き取って妻とします。故人の名をその嗣業の土地に再興するため、また故人の名が一族や郷里の門から絶えてしまわないためです。あなたがたは、今日、このことの証人になったのです。」
◆人々の祝福と神の祝福
4:11 門のところにいたすべての民と長老たちは言った。「そうです、わたしたちは証人です。あなたが家に迎え入れる婦人を、どうか、主がイスラエルの家を建てたラケルとレアの二人のようにしてくださるように。また、あなたがエフラタで富を増し、ベツレヘムで名をあげられるように。
4:12 どうか、主がこの若い婦人によってあなたに子宝をお与えになり、タマルがユダのために産んだペレツの家のように、御家庭が恵まれるように。」
4:13 ボアズはこうしてルツをめとったので、ルツはボアズの妻となり、ボアズは彼女のところに入った。主が身ごもらせたので、ルツは男の子を産んだ。
4:14 女たちはナオミに言った。「主をたたえよ。主はあなたを見捨てることなく、家を絶やさぬ責任のある人を今日お与えくださいました。どうか、イスラエルでその子の名があげられますように。
4:15 その子はあなたの魂を生き返らせる者となり、老後の支えとなるでしょう。あなたを愛する嫁、七人の息子にもまさるあの嫁がその子を産んだのですから。」
4:16 ナオミはその乳飲み子をふところに抱き上げ、養い育てた。
4:17 近所の婦人たちは、ナオミに子供が生まれたと言って、その子に名前を付け、その子をオベドと名付けた。オベドはエッサイの父、エッサイはダビデの父である。

4:18 ペレツの系図は次のとおりである。ペレツにはヘツロンが生まれた。
4:19 ヘツロンにはラムが生まれ、ラムにはアミナダブが生まれた。
4:20 アミナダブにはナフションが生まれ、ナフションにはサルマが生まれた。
4:21 サルマにはボアズが生まれ、ボアズにはオベドが生まれた。
4:22 オベドにはエッサイが生まれ、エッサイにはダビデが生まれた。
1:1 Now it came to pass, in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem, Judah, went to dwell in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons.
1:2 The name of the man was Elimelech, the name of his wife was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion-Ephrathites of Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to the country of Moab and remained there.
1:3 Then Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons.
1:4 Now they took wives of the women of Moab: the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth. And they dwelt there about ten years.
1:5 Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died; so the woman survived her two sons and her husband.
1:6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law that she might return from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the country of Moab that the Lord had visited His people by giving them bread.
1:7 Therefore she went out from the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.
1:8 And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go, return each to her mother's house. The Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me.
1:9 "The Lord grant that you may find rest, each in the house of her husband." Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices and wept.
1:10 And they said to her, "Surely we will return with you to your people."
1:11 But Naomi said, "Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Are there still sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
1:12 "Turn back, my daughters, go-for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say I have hope, if I should have a husband tonight and should also bear sons,
1:13 "would you wait for them till they were grown? Would you restrain yourselves from having husbands? No, my daughters; for it grieves me very much for your sakes that the hand of the Lord has gone out against me!"
1:14 Then they lifted up their voices and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her.
1:15 And she said, "Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law."
1:16 But Ruth said:"Entreat me not to leave you,Or to turn back from following after you;For wherever you go, I will go;And wherever you lodge, I will lodge;Your people shall be my people,And your God, my God.
1:17 Where you die, I will die,And there will I be buried.The Lord do so to me, and more also,If anything but death parts you and me."
1:18 When she saw that she was determined to go with her, she stopped speaking to her.
1:19 Now the two of them went until they came to Bethlehem. And it happened, when they had come to Bethlehem, that all the city was excited because of them; and the women said, "Is this Naomi?"
1:20 But she said to them, "Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.
1:21 "I went out full, and the Lord has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the Lord has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?"
1:22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess her daughter-in-law with her, who returned from the country of Moab. Now they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest.

2:1 There was a relative of Naomi's husband, a man of great wealth, of the family of Elimelech. His name was Boaz.
2:2 So Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, "Please let me go to the field, and glean heads of grain after him in whose sight I may find favor." And she said to her, "Go, my daughter."
2:3 Then she left, and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers. And she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.
2:4 Now behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, "The Lord be with you!" And they answered him, "The Lord bless you!"
2:5 Then Boaz said to his servant who was in charge of the reapers, "Whose young woman is this?"
2:6 So the servant who was in charge of the reapers answered and said, "It is the young Moabite woman who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab.
2:7 "And she said, 'Please let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves.' So she came and has continued from morning until now, though she rested a little in the house."
2:8 Then Boaz said to Ruth, "You will listen, my daughter, will you not? Do not go to glean in another field, nor go from here, but stay close by my young women.
2:9 "Let your eyes be on the field which they reap, and go after them. Have I not commanded the young men not to touch you? And when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink from what the young men have drawn."
2:10 So she fell on her face, bowed down to the ground, and said to him, "Why have I found favor in your eyes, that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner?"
2:11 And Boaz answered and said to her, "It has been fully reported to me, all that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, and how you have left your father and your mother and the land of your birth, and have come to a people whom you did not know before.
2:12 "The Lord repay your work, and a full reward be given you by the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge."
2:13 Then she said, "Let me find favor in your sight, my lord; for you have comforted me, and have spoken kindly to your maidservant, though I am not like one of your maidservants."
2:14 Now Boaz said to her at mealtime, "Come here, and eat of the bread, and dip your piece of bread in the vinegar." So she sat beside the reapers, and he passed parched grain to her; and she ate and was satisfied, and kept some back.
2:15 And when she rose up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, "Let her glean even among the sheaves, and do not reproach her.
2:16 "Also let grain from the bundles fall purposely for her; leave it that she may glean, and do not rebuke her."
2:17 So she gleaned in the field until evening, and beat out what she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley.
2:18 Then she took it up and went into the city, and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned. So she brought out and gave to her what she had kept back after she had been satisfied.
2:19 And her mother-in-law said to her, "Where have you gleaned today? And where did you work? Blessed be the one who took notice of you." So she told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked, and said, "The man's name with whom I worked today is Boaz."
2:20 Then Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, "Blessed be he of the Lord, who has not forsaken His kindness to the living and the dead!" And Naomi said to her, "This man is a relation of ours, one of our close relatives."
2:21 Ruth the Moabitess said, "He also said to me, 'You shall stay close by my young men until they have finished all my harvest.' "
2:22 And Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, "It is good, my daughter, that you go out with his young women, and that people do not meet you in any other field."
2:23 So she stayed close by the young women of Boaz, to glean until the end of barley harvest and wheat harvest; and she dwelt with her mother-in-law.

3:1 Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, "My daughter, shall I not seek security for you, that it may be well with you?
3:2 "Now Boaz, whose young women you were with, is he not our relative? In fact, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor.
3:3 "Therefore wash yourself and anoint yourself, put on your best garment and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.
3:4 "Then it shall be, when he lies down, that you shall notice the place where he lies; and you shall go in, uncover his feet, and lie down; and he will tell you what you should do."
3:5 And she said to her, "All that you say to me I will do."
3:6 So she went down to the threshing floor and did according to all that her mother-in-law instructed her.
3:7 And after Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was cheerful, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain; and she came softly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.
3:8 Now it happened at midnight that the man was startled, and turned himself; and there, a woman was lying at his feet.
3:9 And he said, "Who are you?" So she answered, "I am Ruth, your maidservant. Take your maidservant under your wing, for you are a close relative."
3:10 Then he said, "Blessed are you of the Lord, my daughter! For you have shown more kindness at the end than at the beginning, in that you did not go after young men, whether poor or rich.
3:11 "And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you request, for all the people of my town know that you are a virtuous woman.
3:12 "Now it is true that I am a close relative; however, there is a relative closer than I.
3:13 "Stay this night, and in the morning it shall be that if he will perform the duty of a close relative for you-good; let him do it. But if he does not want to perform the duty for you, then I will perform the duty for you, as the Lord lives! Lie down until morning."
3:14 So she lay at his feet until morning, and she arose before one could recognize another. Then he said, "Do not let it be known that the woman came to the threshing floor."
3:15 Also he said, "Bring the shawl that is on you and hold it." And when she held it, he measured six ephahs of barley, and laid it on her. Then she went into the city.
3:16 So when she came to her mother-in-law, she said, "Is that you, my daughter?" Then she told her all that the man had done for her.
3:17 And she said, "These six ephahs of barley he gave me; for he said to me, 'Do not go empty-handed to your mother-in-law.' "
3:18 Then she said, "Sit still, my daughter, until you know how the matter will turn out; for the man will not rest until he has concluded the matter this day."

4:1 Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there; and behold, the close relative of whom Boaz had spoken came by. So Boaz said, "Come aside, friend, sit down here." So he came aside and sat down.
4:2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, "Sit down here." So they sat down.
4:3 Then he said to the close relative, "Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, sold the piece of land which belonged to our brother Elimelech.
4:4 "And I thought to inform you, saying, 'Buy it back in the presence of the inhabitants and the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if you will not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know; for there is no one but you to redeem it, and I am next after you.' " And he said, "I will redeem it."
4:5 Then Boaz said, "On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also buy it from Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance."
4:6 And the close relative said, "I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I ruin my own inheritance. You redeem my right of redemption for yourself, for I cannot redeem it."
4:7 Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging, to confirm anything: one man took off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was a confirmation in Israel.
4:8 Therefore the close relative said to Boaz, "Buy it for yourself." So he took off his sandal.
4:9 And Boaz said to the elders and all the people, "You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, from the hand of Naomi.
4:10 "Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, I have acquired as my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brethren and from his position at the gate. You are witnesses this day."
4:11 And all the people who were at the gate, and the elders, said, "We are witnesses. The Lord make the woman who is coming to your house like Rachel and Leah, the two who built the house of Israel; and may you prosper in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem.
4:12 "May your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring which the Lord will give you from this young woman."
4:13 So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife; and when he went in to her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son.
4:14 Then the women said to Naomi, "Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without a close relative; and may his name be famous in Israel!
4:15 "And may he be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has borne him."
4:16 Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her bosom, and became a nurse to him.
4:17 Also the neighbor women gave him a name, saying, "There is a son born to Naomi." And they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
4:18 Now this is the genealogy of Perez: Perez begot Hezron;
4:19 Hezron begot Ram, and Ram begot Amminadab;
4:20 Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon;
4:21 Salmon begot Boaz, and Boaz begot Obed;
4:22 Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot David.
