◆エリヤとイスラエルの王アハズヤ
1:1 アハブの死後、モアブはイスラエルに反旗を翻した。
1:2 アハズヤはサマリアで屋上の部屋の欄干から落ちて病気になり、使者を送り出して、「エクロンの神バアル・ゼブブのところに行き、この病気が治るかどうか尋ねよ」と命じた。
1:3 一方、主の御使いはティシュベ人エリヤにこう告げた。「立て、上って行ってサマリアの王の使者に会って言え。『あなたたちはエクロンの神バアル・ゼブブに尋ねようとして出かけているが、イスラエルには神がいないとでも言うのか。
1:4 それゆえ主はこう言われる。あなたは上った寝台から降りることはない。あなたは必ず死ぬ。』」エリヤは出て行った。
1:5 使者たちが帰って来たので、アハズヤは、「お前たちはなぜ帰って来たのか」と尋ねた。
1:6 彼らは答えた。「一人の人がわたしたちに会いに上って来て、こう言いました。『あなたたちを遣わした王のもとに帰って告げよ。主はこう言われる。あなたはエクロンの神バアル・ゼブブに尋ねようとして人を遣わすが、イスラエルには神がいないとでも言うのか。それゆえ、あなたは上った寝台から降りることはない。あなたは必ず死ぬ』と。」
1:7 アハズヤは、「お前たちに会いに上って来て、そのようなことを告げたのはどんな男か」と彼らに尋ねた。
1:8 「毛衣を着て、腰には革帯を締めていました」と彼らが答えると、アハズヤは、「それはティシュベ人エリヤだ」と言った。
1:9 アハズヤは五十人隊の長を、その部下五十人と共にエリヤのもとに遣わした。隊長がエリヤのもとに上って行くと、エリヤは山の頂に座っていた。隊長が、「神の人よ、王が、『降りて来なさい』と命じておられます」と言うと、
1:10 エリヤは五十人隊の長に答えて、「わたしが神の人であれば、天から火が降って来て、あなたと五十人の部下を焼き尽くすだろう」と言った。すると、天から火が降って来て、隊長と五十人の部下を焼き尽くした。
1:11 王は再びもう一人の五十人隊の長を、その部下五十人と共にエリヤのもとに遣わした。隊長が、「神の人よ、王が、『急いで降りて来なさい』と命じておられます」と言いかけると、
1:12 エリヤは彼らに答えて、「わたしが神の人であれば、天から火が降って来て、あなたと五十人の部下を焼き尽くすだろう」と言った。すると、天から神の火が降って来て、隊長と五十人の部下を焼き尽くした。
1:13 王は更に三人目の五十人隊の長とその部下五十人を遣わした。三人目の五十人隊の長は上って来て、エリヤの前にひざまずき、懇願して言った。「神の人よ、どうかわたしの命と、あなたの僕であるこの五十人の命を助けてください。
1:14 御覧のように、天から火が降って来て、先の二人の五十人隊の長と彼らの部下五十人を焼き尽くしました。どうか、わたしの命を助けてください。」
1:15 主の御使いがエリヤに、「彼と共に降りて行け。彼を恐れるには及ばない」と告げたので、エリヤは立ち上がって彼と共に王のところに降りて行って、
1:16 王にこう告げた。「主はこう言われる。『あなたはエクロンの神バアル・ゼブブに尋ねようとして使者を遣わしたが、それはイスラエルにその言葉を求めることのできる神はいないということか。それゆえあなたは上った寝台から降りることはない。あなたは必ず死ぬ。』」
1:17 王はエリヤが告げた主の言葉どおりに死んで、ヨラムが彼に代わって王となった。それはユダの王、ヨシャファトの子ヨラムの治世第二年のことである。アハズヤには息子がなかったからである。
1:18 アハズヤの行った他の事績は、『イスラエルの王の歴代誌』に記されている。

◆エリヤ、天に上げられる
2:1 主が嵐を起こしてエリヤを天に上げられたときのことである。エリヤはエリシャを連れてギルガルを出た。
2:2 エリヤはエリシャに、「主はわたしをベテルにまでお遣わしになるが、あなたはここにとどまっていなさい」と言った。しかしエリシャは、「主は生きておられ、あなた御自身も生きておられます。わたしはあなたを離れません」と答えたので、二人はベテルに下って行った。
2:3 ベテルの預言者の仲間たちがエリシャのもとに出て来て、「主が今日、あなたの主人をあなたから取り去ろうとなさっているのを知っていますか」と問うと、エリシャは、「わたしも知っています。黙っていてください」と答えた。
2:4 エリヤは、「エリシャよ、主はわたしをエリコへお遣わしになるが、あなたはここにとどまっていなさい」と言った。しかしエリシャは、「主は生きておられ、あなた御自身も生きておられます。わたしはあなたを離れません」と答えたので、二人はエリコに来た。
2:5 エリコの預言者の仲間たちがエリシャに近づいて、「主が今日、あなたの主人をあなたから取り去ろうとなさっているのを知っていますか」と問うと、エリシャは、「わたしも知っています。黙っていてください」と答えた。
2:6 エリヤはエリシャに、「主はわたしをヨルダンへお遣わしになるが、あなたはここにとどまっていなさい」と言った。しかしエリシャは、「主は生きておられ、あなた御自身も生きておられます。わたしはあなたを離れません」と答えたので、彼らは二人で出かけて行った。
2:7 預言者の仲間五十人もついて行った。彼らは、ヨルダンのほとりに立ち止まったエリヤとエリシャを前にして、遠く離れて立ち止まった。
2:8 エリヤが外套を脱いで丸め、それで水を打つと、水が左右に分かれたので、彼ら二人は乾いた土の上を渡って行った。
2:9 渡り終わると、エリヤはエリシャに言った。「わたしがあなたのもとから取り去られる前に、あなたのために何をしようか。何なりと願いなさい。」エリシャは、「あなたの霊の二つの分をわたしに受け継がせてください」と言った。
2:10 エリヤは言った。「あなたはむずかしい願いをする。わたしがあなたのもとから取り去られるのをあなたが見れば、願いはかなえられる。もし見なければ、願いはかなえられない。」
2:11 彼らが話しながら歩き続けていると、見よ、火の戦車が火の馬に引かれて現れ、二人の間を分けた。エリヤは嵐の中を天に上って行った。
2:12 エリシャはこれを見て、「わが父よ、わが父よ、イスラエルの戦車よ、その騎兵よ」と叫んだが、もうエリヤは見えなかった。エリシャは自分の衣をつかんで二つに引き裂いた。
2:13 エリヤの着ていた外套が落ちて来たので、彼はそれを拾い、ヨルダンの岸辺に引き返して立ち、
2:14 落ちて来たエリヤの外套を取って、それで水を打ち、「エリヤの神、主はどこにおられますか」と言った。エリシャが水を打つと、水は左右に分かれ、彼は渡ることができた。
2:15 エリコの預言者の仲間たちは目の前で彼を見て、「エリヤの霊がエリシャの上にとどまっている」と言い、彼を迎えに行って、その前で地にひれ伏した。
2:16 彼らはエリシャに言った。「御覧ください。僕たちのところに五十人の戦士がいます。彼らにあなたの主人を捜しに行かせてください。主の霊は彼を運び去り、どこかの山か谷に投げ落としたかもしれません。」しかしエリシャは、「行かせてはならない」と答えた。
2:17 彼らがあまりにもしつこく願ったので、「行かせなさい」と言うと、彼らは五十人を送り出して三日間エリヤを捜させたが、見つけることができず、
2:18 エリコにいるエリシャのもとに帰って来た。エリシャは、「行くなと言ったではないか」と言った。
◆エリシャの二つの奇跡
2:19 この町の人々はエリシャのところに来て、「御覧のように、この町は住むには良いのですが、水が悪く、土地は不毛です」と訴えた。
2:20 彼は、「新しい器を持って来て、それに塩を入れなさい」と命じた。人々が持って来ると、
2:21 彼は水の源に出かけて行って塩を投げ込み、「主はこう言われる。『わたしはこの水を清めた。もはやここから死も不毛も起こらない』」と言った。
2:22 エリシャの告げた言葉のとおり、水は清くなって今日に至っている。
2:23 エリシャはそこからベテルに上った。彼が道を上って行くと、町から小さい子供たちが出て来て彼を嘲り、「はげ頭、上って行け。はげ頭、上って行け」と言った。
2:24 エリシャが振り向いてにらみつけ、主の名によって彼らを呪うと、森の中から二頭の熊が現れ、子供たちのうちの四十二人を引き裂いた。
2:25 エリシャはそこからカルメル山に行き、そこからサマリアに帰った。

◆イスラエルの王ヨラム
3:1 ユダの王ヨシャファトの治世第十八年に、アハブの子ヨラムがサマリアでイスラエルの王となり、十二年間王位にあった。
3:2 彼は主の目に悪とされることを行ったが、ただ彼の父や母ほどではなかった。父が作ったバアルの石柱を彼は取り除いた。
3:3 しかし彼は、イスラエルに罪を犯させたネバトの子ヤロブアムの罪を自分も犯し続け、それを離れなかった。
3:4 モアブの王メシャは羊を飼育しており、十万匹の小羊と雄羊十万匹分の羊毛とを貢ぎ物としてイスラエルの王に納めていた。
3:5 しかし、アハブが死ぬと、モアブの王はイスラエルの王に反旗を翻した。
3:6 ヨラム王は直ちにサマリアを出て、イスラエルのすべての人々を動員し、
3:7 出発した。また使者をユダの王ヨシャファトに遣わし、「モアブの王がわたしに反旗を翻しました。わたしと共にモアブに行って戦っていただけませんか」と言った。ヨシャファトは、「わたしも攻め上ります。わたしはあなたと一体、わたしの民はあなたの民と一体、わたしの馬はあなたの馬と一体です」と答え、
3:8 「我々はどの道を上ればよいのですか」と尋ねた。ヨラムは、「エドムの荒れ野の道を」と答えた。
3:9 イスラエルの王は、ユダの王およびエドムの王と共に出発したが、迂回するのに七日を費やし、部隊と連れて来た家畜のための水が底をついてしまった。
3:10 イスラエルの王は、「ああ、主はこの三人の王をモアブの手に渡すために呼び集められたのか」と言った。
3:11 ヨシャファトが、「ここには我々が主の御旨を尋ねることのできる主の預言者はいないのですか」と尋ねると、イスラエルの王の家臣の一人が、「ここには、エリヤの手に水を注いでいた、シャファトの子エリシャがいます」と答えた。
3:12 ヨシャファトは、「彼には主の言葉があります」と言った。イスラエルの王は、ヨシャファトおよびエドムの王と共に彼のもとに下って行った。
3:13 エリシャはイスラエルの王に言った。「わたしはあなたとどんなかかわりがあるのですか。あなたの父の預言者たちや母の預言者たちのもとに行きなさい。」イスラエルの王は答えた。「いいえ、モアブの手に渡そうとしてこの三人の王を呼び集められたのは主だからです。」
3:14 エリシャは言った。「わたしの仕えている万軍の主は生きておられる。わたしは、ユダの王ヨシャファトに敬意を抱いていなければ、あなたには目もくれず、まして会いもしなかった。
3:15 今、楽を奏する者を連れて来なさい。」楽を奏する者が演奏をすると、主の御手がエリシャに臨み、
3:16 彼は言った。「主はこう言われる。『この涸れ谷に次々と堀を造りなさい。』
3:17 主がこう言われるからである。『風もなく、雨もないのに、この涸れ谷に水が溢れ、あなたたちは家畜や荷役の動物と共にそれを飲む。』
3:18 これは主の目には小さいことである。主はモアブをあなたたちの手にお渡しになる。
3:19 あなたたちはすべての砦の町、すべてのえり抜きの町を打ち破り、すべての有用な木を倒し、すべての泉をふさぎ、すべての優れた耕地を石だらけの荒れ地とする。」
3:20 翌朝、献げ物をささげるころ、見よ、水がエドムの方から流れ込んで、その地は水でいっぱいになった。
3:21 モアブの人々は皆、王たちが攻め上って来たことを聞いた。剣を帯びる年齢に達した者がすべて召集され、国境の守備に就いた。
3:22 彼らが翌朝早く起きると、太陽が水面を照らしていた。モアブの人々は目の前に血のように赤い水を見た。
3:23 彼らは、「これは血だ。王たちは自分たちどうしで争い、討ち合ったにちがいない。モアブよ、今こそ奪うときだ」と言い、
3:24 イスラエルの陣営に突入したが、イスラエルは立ち上がってモアブを迎え撃ち、モアブは敗走した。イスラエルは彼らに襲いかかり、モアブを討った。
3:25 彼らは町を破壊し、すべての肥沃な耕地を皆がそれぞれ投げ込んだ石で満たし、すべての泉をふさぎ、すべての有用な木を切り倒した。残ったのは、キル・ハレセトの石だけであった。それも投石器を持つ者に囲まれ、攻撃された。
3:26 モアブの王は戦いが自分の力の及ばないものになってきたのを見て、剣を携えた兵七百人を引き連れ、エドムの王に向かって突進しようとしたが、果たせなかった。
3:27 そこで彼は、自分に代わって王となるはずの長男を連れて来て、城壁の上で焼き尽くすいけにえとしてささげた。イスラエルに対して激しい怒りが起こり、イスラエルはそこを引き揚げて自分の国に帰った。

◆エリシャの奇跡
4:1 預言者の仲間の妻の一人がエリシャに助けを求めて叫んだ。「あなたの僕であるわたしの夫が死んでしまいました。ご存じのようにあなたの僕は主を畏れ敬う人でした。ところが債権者が来てわたしの子供二人を連れ去り、奴隷にしようとしています。」
4:2 エリシャが、「何をしてあげられるだろうか。あなたの家に何があるのか言いなさい」と促すと、彼女は、「油の壺一つのほか、はしための家には何もありません」と答えた。
4:3 彼は言った。「外に行って近所の人々皆から器を借りて来なさい。空の器をできるだけたくさん借りて来なさい。
4:4 家に帰ったら、戸を閉めて子供たちと一緒に閉じこもり、その器のすべてに油を注ぎなさい。いっぱいになったものは脇に置くのです。」
4:5 彼女はエリシャのもとから出て行くと、戸を閉めて子供たちと一緒に閉じこもり、子供たちが器を持って来ると、それに油を注いだ。
4:6 器がどれもいっぱいになると、彼女は、「もっと器を持っておいで」と子供に言ったが、「器はもうない」と子供が答えた。油は止まった。
4:7 彼女が神の人のもとに行ってそのことを知らせると、彼は言った。「その油を売りに行き、負債を払いなさい。あなたと子供たちはその残りで生活していくことができる。」
4:8 ある日、エリシャはシュネムに行った。そこに一人の裕福な婦人がいて、彼を引き止め、食事を勧めた。以来彼はそこを通るたびに、立ち寄って食事をするようになった。
4:9 彼女は夫に言った。「いつもわたしたちのところにおいでになるあの方は、聖なる神の人であることが分かりました。
4:10 あの方のために階上に壁で囲った小さな部屋を造り、寝台と机と椅子と燭台を備えましょう。おいでのときはそこに入っていただけます。」
4:11 ある日、エリシャはそこに来て、その階上の部屋に入って横になり、
4:12 従者ゲハジに、「あのシュネムの婦人を呼びなさい」と命じた。ゲハジが呼ぶと、彼女は彼の前に来て立った。
4:13 エリシャはゲハジに言った。「彼女に伝えなさい。『あなたはわたしたちのためにこのように何事にも心を砕いてくれた。あなたのために何をしてあげればよいのだろうか。王か軍の司令官に話してほしいことが何かあるのか。』」彼女は、「わたしは同族の者に囲まれて何不足なく暮らしています」と答えた。
4:14 エリシャは、「彼女のために何をすればよいのだろうか」と言うので、ゲハジは、「彼女には子供がなく、夫は年を取っています」と答えた。
4:15 そこでエリシャは彼女を呼ぶように命じた。ゲハジが呼びに行ったので、彼女は来て入り口に立った。
4:16 エリシャは、「来年の今ごろ、あなたは男の子を抱いている」と告げた。彼女は答えた。「いいえ、わたしの主人、神の人よ、はしためを欺かないでください」と答えた。
4:17 しかし、この婦人は身ごもり、エリシャが告げたとおり翌年の同じころ、男の子を産んだ。
4:18 その子は大きくなったが、ある日刈り入れをする人々と共にいた父のところに行ったとき、
4:19 「頭が、頭が」と言った。父が従者に、「この子を母親のところに抱いて行ってくれ」と言ったので、
4:20 従者はその子を母親のところに抱いて行った。その子は母の膝の上でじっとしていたが、昼ごろ死んでしまった。
4:21 彼女は上って行って神の人の寝台にその子を横たえ、戸を閉めて出て来た。
4:22 それから夫を呼び、「従者一人と雌ろば一頭をわたしのために出してください。神の人のもとに急いで行って、すぐに戻って来ます」と言った。
4:23 夫は、「どうして、今日その人のもとに行くのか。新月でも安息日でもないのに」と言ったが、「行って参ります」と彼女は言い、
4:24 雌ろばに鞍を置き、従者に、「手綱を引いて進んで行きなさい。わたしが命じないかぎり進むのをやめてはいけません」と命じた。
4:25 こうして彼女は出かけ、カルメル山にいる神の人のもとに来た。神の人は遠くから彼女を見て、従者ゲハジに言った。「見よ、あのシュネムの婦人だ。
4:26 すぐに走って行って彼女を迎え、『お変わりありませんか、御主人はお変わりありませんか。お子さんはお変わりありませんか』と挨拶しなさい。」彼女は、「変わりはございません」と答えたが、
4:27 山の上にいる神の人のもとに来て、その足にすがりついた。ゲハジは近寄って引き離そうとしたが、神の人は言った。「そのままにしておきなさい。彼女はひどく苦しんでいる。主はそれをわたしに隠して知らされなかったのだ。」
4:28 すると彼女は言った。「わたしがあなたに子供を求めたことがありましょうか。わたしを欺かないでくださいと申し上げたではありませんか。」
4:29 そこでエリシャはゲハジに命じた。「腰に帯を締め、わたしの杖を手に持って行きなさい。だれかに会っても挨拶してはならない。まただれかが挨拶しても答えてはならない。お前はわたしの杖をその子供の顔の上に置きなさい。」
4:30 その子供の母親が、「主は生きておられ、あなた御自身も生きておられます。わたしは決してあなたを離れません」と言ったので、エリシャは立ち上がり、彼女の後について行った。
4:31 ゲハジは二人より先に行って、杖をその子供の顔の上に置いたが、声も出さず、何の反応も示さなかったので、引き返してエリシャに会い、「子供は目を覚ましませんでした」と告げた。
4:32 エリシャが家に着いてみると、彼の寝台に子供は死んで横たわっていた。
4:33 彼は中に入って戸を閉じ、二人だけになって主に祈った。
4:34 そしてエリシャは寝台に上がって、子供の上に伏し、自分の口を子供の口に、目を子供の目に、手を子供の手に重ねてかがみ込むと、子供の体は暖かくなった。
4:35 彼は起き上がり、家の中をあちこち歩き回ってから、再び寝台に上がって子供の上にかがみ込むと、子供は七回くしゃみをして目を開いた。
4:36 エリシャはゲハジを呼び、「あのシュネムの婦人を呼びなさい」と言った。ゲハジに呼ばれて彼女がエリシャのもとに来ると、エリシャは、「あなたの子を受け取りなさい」と言った。
4:37 彼女は近づいてエリシャの足もとに身をかがめ、地にひれ伏し、自分の子供を受け取って出て行った。
4:38 エリシャはギルガルに帰った。その地は飢饉に見舞われていた。預言者の仲間たちが彼の前に座っていたときのこと、彼は従者に、「大きな鍋を火にかけ、預言者の仲間たちのために煮物を作りなさい」と命じた。
4:39 彼らの一人が野に草を摘みに出て行き、野生のつる草を見つけ、そこから野生のうりを上着いっぱいに集めて帰って来た。彼らはそれが何であるかを知らなかったので、刻んで煮物の鍋に入れ、
4:40 人々に食べさせようとよそった。だが、その煮物を口にしたとき、人々は叫んで、「神の人よ、鍋には死の毒が入っています」と言った。彼らはそれを食べることができなかった。
4:41 エリシャは、「麦粉を持って来るように」と命じ、それを鍋に投げ入れてから、「よそって人々に食べさせなさい」と言うと、鍋には有害なものはなくなっていた。
4:42 一人の男がバアル・シャリシャから初物のパン、大麦パン二十個と新しい穀物を袋に入れて神の人のもとに持って来た。神の人は、「人々に与えて食べさせなさい」と命じたが、
4:43 召し使いは、「どうしてこれを百人の人々に分け与えることができましょう」と答えた。エリシャは再び命じた。「人々に与えて食べさせなさい。主は言われる。『彼らは食べきれずに残す。』」
4:44 召し使いがそれを配ったところ、主の言葉のとおり彼らは食べきれずに残した。

5:1 アラムの王の軍司令官ナアマンは、主君に重んじられ、気に入られていた。主がかつて彼を用いてアラムに勝利を与えられたからである。この人は勇士であったが、重い皮膚病を患っていた。
5:2 アラム人がかつて部隊を編成して出動したとき、彼らはイスラエルの地から一人の少女を捕虜として連れて来て、ナアマンの妻の召し使いにしていた。
5:3 少女は女主人に言った。「御主人様がサマリアの預言者のところにおいでになれば、その重い皮膚病をいやしてもらえるでしょうに。」
5:4 ナアマンが主君のもとに行き、「イスラエルの地から来た娘がこのようなことを言っています」と伝えると、
5:5 アラムの王は言った。「行くがよい。わたしもイスラエルの王に手紙を送ろう。」こうしてナアマンは銀十キカル、金六千シェケル、着替えの服十着を携えて出かけた。
5:6 彼はイスラエルの王に手紙を持って行った。そこには、こうしたためられていた。「今、この手紙をお届けするとともに、家臣ナアマンを送り、あなたに託します。彼の重い皮膚病をいやしてくださいますように。」
5:7 イスラエルの王はこの手紙を読むと、衣を裂いて言った。「わたしが人を殺したり生かしたりする神だとでも言うのか。この人は皮膚病の男を送りつけていやせと言う。よく考えてみよ。彼はわたしに言いがかりをつけようとしているのだ。」
5:8 神の人エリシャはイスラエルの王が衣を裂いたことを聞き、王のもとに人を遣わして言った。「なぜあなたは衣を裂いたりしたのですか。その男をわたしのところによこしてください。彼はイスラエルに預言者がいることを知るでしょう。」
5:9 ナアマンは数頭の馬と共に戦車に乗ってエリシャの家に来て、その入り口に立った。
5:10 エリシャは使いの者をやってこう言わせた。「ヨルダン川に行って七度身を洗いなさい。そうすれば、あなたの体は元に戻り、清くなります。」
5:11 ナアマンは怒ってそこを去り、こう言った。「彼が自ら出て来て、わたしの前に立ち、彼の神、主の名を呼び、患部の上で手を動かし、皮膚病をいやしてくれるものと思っていた。
5:12 イスラエルのどの流れの水よりもダマスコの川アバナやパルパルの方が良いではないか。これらの川で洗って清くなれないというのか。」彼は身を翻して、憤慨しながら去って行った。
5:13 しかし、彼の家来たちが近づいて来ていさめた。「わが父よ、あの預言者が大変なことをあなたに命じたとしても、あなたはそのとおりなさったにちがいありません。あの預言者は、『身を洗え、そうすれば清くなる』と言っただけではありませんか。」
5:14 ナアマンは神の人の言葉どおりに下って行って、ヨルダンに七度身を浸した。彼の体は元に戻り、小さい子供の体のようになり、清くなった。
5:15 彼は随員全員を連れて神の人のところに引き返し、その前に来て立った。「イスラエルのほか、この世界のどこにも神はおられないことが分かりました。今この僕からの贈り物をお受け取りください。」
5:16 神の人は、「わたしの仕えている主は生きておられる。わたしは受け取らない」と辞退した。ナアマンは彼に強いて受け取らせようとしたが、彼は断った。
5:17 ナアマンは言った。「それなら、らば二頭に負わせることができるほどの土をこの僕にください。僕は今後、主以外の他の神々に焼き尽くす献げ物やその他のいけにえをささげることはしません。
5:18 ただし、この事については主が僕を赦してくださいますように。わたしの主君がリモンの神殿に行ってひれ伏すとき、わたしは介添えをさせられます。そのとき、わたしもリモンの神殿でひれ伏さねばなりません。わたしがリモンの神殿でひれ伏すとき、主がその事についてこの僕を赦してくださいますように。」
5:19 エリシャは彼に、「安心して行きなさい」と言った。ナアマンがエリシャと別れて、少し行ったとき、
5:20 神の人エリシャの従者ゲハジは、「わたしの主人は、あのアラム人ナアマンが持って来たものを何も受け取らずに帰してしまった。主は生きておられる。彼を追いかけて何かもらってこよう」と言って、
5:21 ナアマンの後を追った。ナアマンは彼が後を追って来るのを見て、戦車から飛び降り、彼を迎え、「どうかなさいましたか」と尋ねた。
5:22 彼は答えた。「何でもありません。わたしの主人がわたしを遣わしてこう言いました。『今し方預言者の仲間の若い者が二人エフライムの山地から着いた。彼らに銀一キカルと着替えの服二着を与えてほしい。』」
5:23 ナアマンは、「どうぞ、二キカル取ってください」と言ってしきりに勧め、二つの袋に銀二キカルを詰め、着替えの服二着を添えて、自分の従者二人に渡した。彼らはそれを持ち、ゲハジの先に立って進んだ。
5:24 オフェルに着いたとき、ゲハジは彼らからそれらを受け取って家にしまい込み、彼らを帰した。彼らは去って行った。
5:25 彼が主人のところに来て立つと、エリシャは、「ゲハジ、お前はどこに行っていたのか」と言った。ゲハジは、「僕はどこにも行っていません」と答えたが、
5:26 エリシャは言った。「あの人が戦車から降りて引き返し、お前を迎えたとき、わたしの心がそこに行っていなかったとでも言うのか。今は銀を受け、衣服、オリーブの木やぶどう畑、羊や牛、男女の奴隷を受け取る時であろうか。
5:27 ナアマンの重い皮膚病がお前とお前の子孫にいつまでもまといつくことになるのに。」ゲハジは重い皮膚病で雪のようになり、エリシャの前から立ち去った。

6:1 預言者の仲間たちがエリシャに言った。「御覧のように、わたしたちがあなたと共に住んでいるこの場所は、わたしたちには狭すぎます。
6:2 ヨルダンに行き、梁にする材木を各自一本ずつ取って来て、わたしたちの住む場所を造りましょう。」エリシャは、「行きなさい」と言った。
6:3 一人が、「どうぞあなたもわたしたちと一緒に来てください」と頼んだので、「わたしも行こう」と言って、
6:4 エリシャも彼らと共に行った。彼らはヨルダンに来て、木を切り出した。
6:5 そのうちの一人が梁にする木を切り倒しているとき、鉄の斧が水の中に落ちてしまった。彼は、「ああ、御主人よ、あれは借り物なのです」と叫んだ。
6:6 神の人は、「どこに落ちたのか」と尋ね、その場所が示されると、枝を切り取ってそこに投げた。すると鉄の斧が浮き上がった。
6:7 「拾い上げよ」と言われて、その人は手を伸ばし、それを取った。
◆アラム軍の敗退
6:8 アラムの王がイスラエルと戦っていたときのことである。王は家臣を集めて協議し、「これこれのところに陣を張ろう」と言った。
6:9 しかし、神の人はイスラエルの王のもとに人を遣わし、「その場所を通らないように注意せよ。アラム軍がそこに下って来ている」と言わせた。
6:10 イスラエルの王は神の人が知らせたところに人を送った。エリシャが警告したので、王はそこを警戒するようになった。これは一度や二度のことではなかった。
6:11 アラムの王の心はこの事によって荒れ狂い、家臣たちを呼んで、「我々の中のだれがイスラエルの王と通じているのか、わたしに告げなさい」と言った。
6:12 家臣の一人が答えた。「だれも通じていません。わが主君、王よ、イスラエルには預言者エリシャがいて、あなたが寝室で話す言葉までイスラエルの王に知らせているのです。」
6:13 アラムの王は言った。「行って、彼がどこにいるのか、見て来るのだ。わたしは彼を捕らえに人を送る。」こうして王に、「彼はドタンにいる」という知らせがもたらされた。
6:14 王は、軍馬、戦車、それに大軍をそこに差し向けた。彼らは夜中に到着し、その町を包囲した。
6:15 神の人の召し使いが朝早く起きて外に出てみると、軍馬や戦車を持った軍隊が町を包囲していた。従者は言った。「ああ、御主人よ、どうすればいいのですか。」
6:16 するとエリシャは、「恐れてはならない。わたしたちと共にいる者の方が、彼らと共にいる者より多い」と言って、
6:17 主に祈り、「主よ、彼の目を開いて見えるようにしてください」と願った。主が従者の目を開かれたので、彼は火の馬と戦車がエリシャを囲んで山に満ちているのを見た。
6:18 アラム軍が攻め下って来たので、エリシャが主に祈って、「この異邦の民を打って目をくらましてください」と言うと、主はエリシャの言葉どおり彼らを打って目をくらまされた。
6:19 エリシャは彼らに、「これはあなたたちの行く道ではない。これはあなたたちの求める町ではない。わたしについて来なさい。あなたたちの捜している人のところへわたしが連れて行ってあげよう」と言って、彼らをサマリアに連れて行った。
6:20 彼らがサマリアに着くと、エリシャは、「主よ、彼らの目を開いて見えるようにしてください」と言った。主が彼らの目を開かれ、彼らは見えるようになったが、見たのは自分たちがサマリアの真ん中にいるということであった。
6:21 イスラエルの王は彼らを見て、エリシャに、「わたしの父よ、わたしが打ち殺しましょうか、打ち殺しましょうか」と言ったが、
6:22 エリシャは答えた。「打ち殺してはならない。あなたは捕虜とした者を剣と弓で打ち殺すのか。彼らにパンと水を与えて食事をさせ、彼らの主君のもとに行かせなさい。」
6:23 そこで王は彼らのために大宴会を催した。彼らは食べて飲んだ後、自分たちの主君のもとに帰って行った。アラムの部隊は二度とイスラエルの地に来なかった。
6:24 その後、アラムの王ベン・ハダドは全軍を召集し、攻め上って来て、サマリアを包囲した。
6:25 サマリアは大飢饉に見舞われていたが、それに包囲が加わって、ろばの頭一つが銀八十シェケル、鳩の糞四分の一カブが五シェケルで売られるようになった。
6:26 イスラエルの王が城壁の上を通って行くと、一人の女が彼に向かって叫んだ。「わが主君、王よ、救ってください。」
6:27 王は言った。「主が救ってくださらなければ、どのようにしてわたしがあなたを救えよう。麦打ち場にあるものによってか、それとも酒ぶねにあるものによってか。」
6:28 王は更に、「何があったのか」と尋ねると、彼女は言った。「この女がわたしに、『あなたの子供をください。今日その子を食べ、明日はわたしの子供を食べましょう』と言うので、
6:29 わたしたちはわたしの子供を煮て食べました。しかしその翌日、わたしがこの女に、『あなたの子供をください。その子を食べましょう』と言いますと、この女は自分の子供を隠してしまったのです。」
6:30 王はこの女の話を聞いて、衣を裂いた。王は城壁の上を通っていたので、それが民に見えた。王の肌着は粗布であった。
6:31 王は言った。「シャファトの子エリシャの首が今日も彼についているなら、神が幾重にもわたしを罰してくださるように。」
6:32 エリシャは自分の家に座り、長老たちも一緒に座っていた。王は彼に向けて人を遣わしたが、この使者が着く前に、彼は長老たちに言った。「分かりますか。あの人殺しはわたしの首をはねるために人を遣わしました。見よ、使者が来たら、戸を閉じ、戸のところでその人を押し返してください。その後に、彼の主君の足音が聞こえるではありませんか。」
6:33 エリシャがまだ彼らと話しているうちに、使者が彼のところに下って来て言った。「この不幸は主によって引き起こされた。もはや主に何を期待できるのか。」

7:1 エリシャは言った。「主の言葉を聞きなさい。主はこう言われる。『明日の今ごろ、サマリアの城門で上等の小麦粉一セアが一シェケル、大麦二セアが一シェケルで売られる。』」
7:2 王の介添えをしていた侍従は神の人に答えた。「主が天に窓を造られたとしても、そんなことはなかろう。」エリシャは言った。「あなたは自分の目でそれを見る。だが、それを食べることはない。」
7:3 城門の入り口に重い皮膚病を患う者が四人いて、互いに言い合った。「どうしてわたしたちは死ぬまでここに座っていられようか。
7:4 町に入ろうと言ってみたところで、町は飢饉に見舞われていて、わたしたちはそこで死ぬだけだし、ここに座っていても死ぬだけだ。そうならアラムの陣営に投降しよう。もし彼らが生かしてくれるなら、わたしたちは生き延びることができる。もしわたしたちを殺すなら、死ぬまでのことだ。」
7:5 夕暮れに、彼らはアラムの陣営に行こうと立ち上がったが、アラムの陣営の外れまで来たところ、そこにはだれもいなかった。
7:6 主が戦車の音や軍馬の音や大軍の音をアラムの陣営に響き渡らせられたため、彼らは、「見よ、イスラエルの王が我々を攻めるためにヘト人の諸王やエジプトの諸王を買収したのだ」と言い合い、
7:7 夕暮れに立って逃げ去った。彼らは天幕も馬もろばも捨て、陣営をそのままにして、命を惜しんで逃げ去った。
7:8 重い皮膚病を患っている者たちは陣営の外れまで来て、一つの天幕に入り、飲み食いした後、銀、金、衣服を運び出して隠した。彼らはまた戻って来て他の天幕に入り、そこからも運び出して隠した。
7:9 彼らは互いに言い合った。「わたしたちはこのようなことをしていてはならない。この日は良い知らせの日だ。わたしたちが黙って朝日が昇るまで待っているなら、罰を受けるだろう。さあ行って、王家の人々に知らせよう。」
7:10 彼らは行って町の門衛を呼び、こう伝えた。「わたしたちはアラムの陣営に行って来ましたが、そこにはだれもいませんでした。そこには人の声もなく、ただ馬やろばがつながれたままで、天幕もそのままでした。」
7:11 門衛たちは叫んで、この知らせを中の王家の人々に知らせた。
7:12 夜中に王は起きて家臣たちに言った。「アラム軍が我々に対して計っていることを教えよう。我々が飢えているのを知って、彼らは陣営を出て野に隠れ、『イスラエル人が町から出て来たら、彼らを生け捕りにし、町に攻め入ろう』と思っているのだ。」
7:13 家臣の一人がそれにこう答えた。「ここに残っている馬の中から五頭を選び、それに人を乗せて偵察に送りましょう。彼らも、ここに残っているイスラエルのすべての民衆、また既に最期を遂げたイスラエルのすべての民衆と同じ運命にあるのです。」
7:14 こうして、彼らが馬と二台の戦車を選ぶと、王は、「行って見てくるように」と命じて、アラムの軍勢の後を追わせた。
7:15 彼らはアラム軍の後を追って、ヨルダンまで来たが、その道はどこもアラム軍が慌てて投げ捨てた衣類や武具で満ちていた。使いの者たちは帰って来てこのことを王に報告した。
7:16 そこで民は出て行ってアラムの陣営で略奪をほしいままにし、主の言葉どおり上等の小麦粉一セアが一シェケル、大麦二セアが一シェケルで売られるようになった。
7:17 王は自分の介添えをしていた例の侍従を城門の管理に当たらせたが、彼は城門で民に踏み倒されて死んだ。王が神の人のところに下って行ったときに、神の人が告げたとおりであった。
7:18 神の人が王に、「明日の今ごろ、サマリアの城門で大麦二セアが一シェケル、上等の小麦粉一セアが一シェケルで売られるようになる」と言うと、
7:19 その侍従は神の人に、「主が天に窓を造られたとしても、そんなことはなかろう」と答えたので、エリシャは、「あなたは自分の目でそれを見る。だが、それを食べることはない」と言った。
7:20 それがそのとおりに実現し、彼は門で民に踏み倒されて死んだ。

◆シュネムの婦人への返済
8:1 エリシャは、かつてその子供を生き返らせてやったことのある婦人に言った。「あなたは家族と共に立ち去り、住める所に移り住みなさい。主が飢饉を呼び起こし、それはこの地にも及んで七年も続くからだ。」
8:2 婦人は直ちに神の人の言葉どおりに行動し、家族と共に立ち去り、ペリシテ人の地に七年間住んだ。
8:3 七年たってから、その婦人はペリシテ人の地から帰り、王のもとに自分の家と畑の返還を求めて訴え出た。
8:4 そのとき、王は神の人の従者ゲハジに話しかけ、「エリシャの行った大いなる業をすべて語り聞かせてくれ」と言っていた。
8:5 神の人が死人を生き返らせたことをゲハジが王に語り聞かせていると、ちょうどそのとき、かつて子供を生き返らせてもらった婦人が、自分の家と畑のことで訴えに来たのであった。ゲハジは、「わたしの主君、王よ、これがその婦人です。またこれがその子で、エリシャはこの子を生き返らせたのです」と言った。
8:6 婦人は王の求めに応じてその事実を語った。そこで王は彼女のために、一人の宦官に次のように命じた。「この婦人の物をすべて返しなさい。またこの地を後にした日から今に至るまでの畑のすべての収穫も返しなさい。」
◆ダマスコでのエリシャの預言
8:7 エリシャがダマスコに来たとき、アラムの王ベン・ハダドは病気であった。「神の人がここに来た」と知らせる者があって、
8:8 王はハザエルに言った。「贈り物を持って神の人を迎えに行き、わたしのこの病気が治るかどうか、彼を通して主の御旨を尋ねよ。」
8:9 ハザエルは贈り物としてダマスコのすべての価値あるものをらくだ四十頭に載せて携え、エリシャを迎えに行った。彼はエリシャの前に立って言った。「あなたの子、アラムの王ベン・ハダドがわたしをあなたに遣わしました。この病気が治るかどうかと言っています。」
8:10 エリシャは言った。「行って王に言うがいい。『あなたは必ず治る』と。しかし、主は彼が必ず死ぬことをわたしに示された。」
8:11 神の人は、ハザエルが恥じ入るほど、じっと彼を見つめ、そして泣き出したので、
8:12 ハザエルは、「どうしてあなたは泣かれるのですか」と尋ねた。エリシャは答えた。「わたしはあなたがイスラエルの人々に災いをもたらすことを知っているからです。あなたはその砦に火を放ち、若者を剣にかけて殺し、幼子を打ちつけ、妊婦を切り裂きます。」
8:13 ハザエルは、「この僕、この犬にどうしてそんな大それた事ができましょうか」と言ったが、エリシャは、「主はあなたがアラムの王になることをわたしに示された」と答えた。
8:14 彼はエリシャのもとを離れ、自分の主君のところに帰ると、王は、「エリシャはお前に何と言ったか」と尋ねたので、「必ず治ると彼は言いました」と答えた。
8:15 しかし翌日、彼は布を取って水に浸し、王の顔を覆ったので、王は死んだ。ハザエルが彼に代わって王となった。
◆ユダの王ヨラム
8:16 イスラエルの王アハブの子ヨラムの治世第五年に、――ヨシャファトがユダの王であったが――ユダの王ヨシャファトの子ヨラムが王となった。
8:17 彼は三十二歳で王となり、八年間エルサレムで王位にあった。
8:18 彼はアハブの娘を妻としていたので、アハブの家が行ったように、イスラエルの王たちの道を歩み、主の目に悪とされることを行った。
8:19 しかし、主はその僕ダビデのゆえに、ユダを滅ぼそうとはされなかった。主は、ダビデとその子孫に絶えずともし火を与えると約束されたからである。
8:20 ヨラムの治世に、エドムがユダに反旗を翻してその支配から脱し、自分たちの王を立てた。
8:21 ヨラムは全戦車隊を率いてツァイルに進み、夜襲を試みて、自分を包囲するエドム兵とその戦車隊の長たちを打ち破った。しかし、その民は自分の天幕に逃げ帰った。
8:22 こうしてエドムはユダに反旗を翻してその支配から脱し、今日に至っている。そのころ、同時にリブナが反旗を翻した。
8:23 ヨラムの他の事績、彼の行ったすべての事は、『ユダの王の歴代誌』に記されている。
8:24 ヨラムは先祖と共に眠りにつき、先祖と共にダビデの町に葬られた。その子アハズヤがヨラムに代わって王となった。
◆ユダの王アハズヤ
8:25 イスラエルの王、アハブの子ヨラムの治世第十二年に、ユダの王ヨラムの子アハズヤが王となった。
8:26 アハズヤは二十二歳で王となり、一年間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をアタルヤといい、イスラエルの王オムリの孫娘であった。
8:27 アハズヤはこのようにアハブの家と姻戚関係にあったため、アハブの家の道を歩み、アハブの家と同じように主の目に悪とされることを行った。
8:28 彼はアハブの子ヨラムと共にアラムの王ハザエルと戦うため、ラモト・ギレアドに行った。しかし、アラム兵がヨラムに傷を負わせた。
8:29 ヨラム王は、アラムの王ハザエルとのラマにおける戦いでアラム兵に負わされた傷をいやすため、イズレエルに戻った。ユダの王、ヨラムの子アハズヤは、病床にあるアハブの子ヨラムを見舞うため、イズレエルに下って行った。

◆イエフの謀反
9:1 預言者エリシャは預言者の仲間の一人を呼んで言った。「腰に帯を締め、手にこの油の壺を持って、ラモト・ギレアドに行きなさい。
9:2 そこに着いたら、ニムシの孫でヨシャファトの子であるイエフに会いなさい。あなたは入って彼をその仲間の間から立たせ、奥の部屋に連れて行き、
9:3 油の壺を取って彼の頭に注いで言いなさい。『主はこう言われる。わたしはあなたに油を注ぎ、あなたをイスラエルの王とする』と。そして戸を開けて逃げて来なさい。ぐずぐずしていてはならない。」
9:4 その若者、預言者の従者はラモト・ギレアドに行った。
9:5 彼がそこに着くと、軍の長たちが席に着いていた。彼が、「将軍、あなたに申し上げたいことがあります」と言うと、イエフは、「我々のうちの誰に対してか」と聞き返した。彼は、「将軍、あなたに対してです」と答えた。
9:6 イエフは立って家に入って来た。若者は彼の頭に油を注いで言った。「イスラエルの神、主はこう言われる。『わたしはあなたに油を注ぎ、あなたを主の民イスラエルの王とする。
9:7 あなたはあなたの主君アハブの家を撃たねばならない。こうしてわたしはイゼベルの手にかかったわたしの僕たち、預言者たちの血、すべての主の僕たちの血の復讐をする。
9:8 アハブの家は全滅する。わたしは、イスラエルにおいて縛られている者も解き放たれている者も、アハブに属する男子をすべて絶ち滅ぼし、
9:9 アハブの家をネバトの子ヤロブアムの家のようにし、アヒヤの子バシャの家のようにする。
9:10 犬がイズレエルの所有地でイゼベルを食い、彼女を葬る者はいない。』」彼は戸を開けて逃げ去った。
9:11 イエフが主君の家臣たちのところに出て行くと、彼らは、「どうだった。なぜあの狂った男があなたを訪ねて来たのか」と聞いた。イエフは、「あの男が誰で、何を言ったのか、あなたたちには分かっているはずだ」と答えたが、
9:12 彼らは言った。「それは違う。我々によく説明してくれ。」そこで彼は言った。「あの男はわたしにこのように告げた。『主はこう言われる。わたしはあなたに油を注ぎ、あなたをイスラエルの王とする。』」
9:13 彼らはおのおの急いで上着を脱ぎ、階段の上にいた彼の足もとに敷き、角笛を吹いて、「イエフが王になった」と宣言した。
9:14 ニムシの孫でヨシャファトの子であるイエフは、ヨラムに対して謀反を起こした。――ヨラムは全イスラエルを率い、アラムの王ハザエルに対して、ラモト・ギレアドの防衛に当たったが、
9:15 アラムの王ハザエルとの戦いでアラム兵に傷を負わされ、それをいやすためイズレエルに戻っていた。――イエフは言った。「もしあなたたちが本気でいるなら、だれもこの町を抜け出してイズレエルに知らせに行ってはならない。」
9:16 それから、イエフは戦車に乗ってイズレエルに向かった。ヨラムがそこで床に伏していたからである。またユダの王アハズヤがヨラムを見舞いに下って来ていた。
9:17 イズレエルの塔の上には見張りが立っていたが、イエフの軍勢が近づいて来るのを見て、「軍勢が見えます」と言った。ヨラムは、「騎兵を一人選んで迎えに行かせ、道中無事だったか、尋ねさせよ」と命じた。
9:18 騎兵は迎えに行って、「王が、道中御無事でしたかと尋ねておられます」と伝えた。しかしイエフは、「道中無事であったかどうか、お前と何のかかわりがあるのか。わたしの後ろにまわれ」と言った。一方、見張りは、「使いの者は彼らのところに行ったまま帰って来ません」と知らせた。
9:19 ヨラムは騎兵をもう一人遣わした。彼も彼らのところに行って、「王が、道中御無事でしたかと尋ねておられます」と伝えた。しかし、イエフは、「道中無事であったかどうか、お前と何のかかわりがあるのか。わたしの後ろにまわれ」と言った。
9:20 見張りはまた、「彼らのところに行ったまま帰って来ません。あの戦車の走らせ方はニムシの子イエフの走らせ方と似ています。狂ったように走らせているからです」と報告した。
9:21 ヨラムは、「馬をつなげ」と命じた。戦車に馬がつながれると、イスラエルの王ヨラムとユダの王アハズヤは、それぞれ自分の戦車に乗って出て行った。彼らはイエフを迎えようとして出て行き、イズレエル人ナボトの所有地で彼に出会った。
9:22 ヨラムはイエフを見ると、「イエフ、道中無事だったか」と尋ねたが、イエフは答えた。「あなたの母イゼベルの姦淫とまじないが盛んに行われているのに、何が無事か。」
9:23 ヨラムは手綱を返して逃げ出し、アハズヤに、「アハズヤよ、裏切りだ」と叫んだ。
9:24 イエフは手に弓を取り、ヨラムの腕と腕の間を射た。矢は心臓を射貫き、彼は戦車の中に崩れ落ちた。
9:25 イエフは侍従ビドカルに言った。「彼をイズレエル人ナボトの所有地の畑に運んで投げ捨てよ。わたしがお前と共に馬に乗って彼の父アハブに従って行ったとき、主がこの託宣を授けられたことを思い起こせ。
9:26 『わたしは昨日ナボトの血とその子らの血を確かに見た』と主は言われた。また、『わたしはこの所有地であなたに報復する』と主は言われた。今、主の言葉どおり、彼をその所有地に運んで投げ捨てよ。」
9:27 ユダの王アハズヤはこれを見て、ベト・ガンの道を通って逃げた。イエフはその後を追い、「彼も撃ってしまえ」と命じた。アハズヤは、イブレアムの近くのグルの坂を行く戦車の中で傷を負い、メギドまで逃げて、そこで死んだ。
9:28 彼の家臣たちはその遺体を車に乗せてエルサレムに運び、ダビデの町の彼の墓に先祖と共に葬った。
9:29 アハブの子ヨラムの治世第十一年に、アハズヤはユダの王となった。
9:30 イエフがイズレエルに来たとき、イゼベルはそれを聞いて、目に化粧をし、髪を結い、窓から見下ろしていた。
9:31 イエフが城門を入って来ると、「主人殺しのジムリ、御無事でいらっしゃいますか」と言った。
9:32 彼は窓を見上げ、「わたしの味方になる者は誰だ、誰だ」と言うと、二、三人の宦官が見下ろしたので、
9:33 「その女を突き落とせ」と言った。彼らがイゼベルを突き落としたので、その血は壁や馬に飛び散り、馬が彼女を踏みつけた。
9:34 彼は家に入って食事をしてから言った。「あの呪われた女の面倒を見てやれ。彼女も王女だったのだから、葬ってやれ。」
9:35 だが、人々が葬ろうとして行くと、頭蓋骨と両足、両手首しかなかった。
9:36 彼らが帰って、そのことを知らせると、イエフは言った。「これは主の言葉のとおりだ。主はその僕ティシュベ人エリヤによってこう言われた。『イゼベルの肉は、イズレエルの所有地で犬に食われ、
9:37 イゼベルの遺体はイズレエルの所有地で畑の面にまかれた肥やしのようになり、これがイゼベルだとはだれも言えなくなる。』」

10:1 アハブの子供が七十人サマリアにいた。イエフは手紙を書いてサマリアに送り、町の指導者、長老たちとアハブの子供の養育者たちにこう伝えた。
10:2 「今この手紙が届いたら、あなたたちのもとにはあなたたちの主君の子供、それに戦車、軍馬、および砦の町と武器があるのだから、
10:3 その主君の子供の中から最も優れた正しい人物を選んで、父の王座につけ、あなたたちの主君の家のために戦え。」
10:4 彼らは大いに恐れ、「二人の王でさえ彼に立ち向かえなかったのに、どうして我々が立ち向かうことができよう」と言った。
10:5 そこで宮廷長、町の長、長老、養育者たちはイエフに人を送ってこう言わせた。「わたしたちはあなたの僕です。あなたがお命じになることは何でもいたします。わたしたちにはだれをも王として立てるつもりがありません。あなたの目に良いと映ることをなさってください。」
10:6 イエフは彼らにもう一通手紙を書いて、こう言った。「もしあなたたちがわたしの味方をし、わたしの命令に従うなら、あなたたちの主君の子供たちの首を取り、明日の今ごろ、イズレエルにいるわたしのもとに持って来なさい。」七十人の王子たちは、それぞれその養育に当たっていた町の有力者たちのところにいたが、
10:7 この手紙が届くと、彼らは王子たちを捕らえ、七十人を残らず殺し、その首を籠に入れ、イズレエルにいるイエフのもとに送った。
10:8 使者が、「王子の首が届けられました」と知らせに来ると、イエフは、「その首は二つの山に積んで、明朝まで町の入り口にさらしておけ」と命じた。
10:9 翌朝、彼はそこに出て行って立ち、すべての民に言った。「あなたたちに罪はない。わたしは主君に対して謀反を起こし、彼を殺した。だが、この者たちすべてを打ち殺したのは誰か。
10:10 ただ、このことだけは知っておくがいい。主がアハブの家に対してお告げになった主の言葉は一つも地に落ちることがない。主はその僕エリヤによってお告げになったことを実現された。」
10:11 こうしてイエフは、イズレエルに残っていたアハブの家の者およびアハブについていた有力者、親友、祭司を皆打ち殺し、一人も残さなかった。
10:12 イエフは立ってサマリアに向かったが、途中ベト・エケド・ロイムで、
10:13 ユダの王アハズヤの身内の者たちに出会った。「あなたたちは誰か」と尋ねると、彼らは、「わたしたちはアハズヤの身内の者です。王子たち、王妃の子供たちの安否を問いに行くところです」と答えた。
10:14 彼は、「この者たちを皆、生け捕りにせよ」と命じた。部下は彼らを生け捕りにして、ベト・エケドの水溜めのところで、彼ら四十二人を殺し、一人も残さなかった。
10:15 イエフがそこを出て進んで行くと、彼を迎えに出たレカブの子ヨナダブに会った。イエフは彼に挨拶して言った。「わたしの心があなたの心に対して誠実であるように、あなたの心も誠実ですか。」ヨナダブは答えた。「そのとおりです。」イエフが、「そのとおりなら、手を出してください」と言ったので、ヨナダブが手を差し出すと、イエフは彼を引き上げて自分の戦車に乗せ、
10:16 「一緒に来て、主に対するわたしの情熱を見てください」と言った。二人は彼の戦車に一緒に乗り、
10:17 サマリアに行った。彼は主がエリヤにお告げになった言葉のとおり、サマリアでアハブの家の者をことごとく打ち殺し、一族を全滅させた。
10:18 イエフはすべての民を集めて言った。「アハブは少ししかバアルに仕えなかったが、このイエフは大いにバアルに仕えるつもりだ。
10:19 今バアルのすべての預言者、バアルに仕えるすべての者、すべての祭司をわたしのもとに呼べ。一人も欠席させてはならない。わたしがバアルに大いなるいけにえをささげるからだ。欠席する者はだれも生かしてはおかない。」イエフはバアルに仕える者を絶やすために、策略を用いたのである。
10:20 イエフが、「バアルのために聖なる集まりを催せ」と命じたので、彼らはそれを布告した。
10:21 イエフがイスラエル中に使者を遣わすと、バアルに仕える者が皆集まって来た。来ない者は一人もなかった。彼らはバアルの神殿に入り、神殿は隅々まで満ちた。
10:22 イエフは衣装係に、「バアルに仕えるすべての者に祭服を出してやれ」と言った。彼らは祭服を出した。
10:23 そこでイエフはレカブ人ヨナダブと共にバアルの神殿に入り、バアルに仕える者たちに言った。「主に仕える者があなたたちと一緒にいることがないよう、ただバアルに仕える者だけがいるように、よく調べて見よ。」
10:24 二人はいけにえと焼き尽くす献げ物をささげるために入ったが、イエフは外に八十人の人を置き、次のように言った。「わたしがお前たちの手に渡す者を逃がした者は、自分の命をその逃がした者の命に代えなければならない。」
10:25 焼き尽くす献げ物をささげ終わったとき、イエフは近衛兵と侍従たちに言った。「入って、彼らを討て。一人も外に出すな。」近衛兵と侍従たちは彼らを剣にかけて殺し、そこに投げ捨て、更にバアルの神殿の奥まで踏み込み、
10:26 バアルの神殿にある石柱を運び出して焼き捨てた。
10:27 バアルの石柱を破壊してから、バアルの神殿を破壊し、これを便所にした。それは今日に至るまでそうなっている。
10:28 このようにして、イエフはイスラエルからバアルを滅ぼし去った。
10:29 ただ、イスラエルに罪を犯させたネバトの子ヤロブアムの罪からは離れず、ベテルとダンにある金の子牛を退けなかった。
10:30 主はイエフに言われた。「あなたはわたしの目にかなう正しいことをよく成し遂げ、わたしの心にあった事をことごとくアハブの家に対して行った。それゆえあなたの子孫は四代にわたってイスラエルの王座につく。」
10:31 しかしイエフは、心を尽くしてイスラエルの神、主の律法に従って歩もうと努めず、イスラエルに罪を犯させたヤロブアムの罪を離れなかった。
10:32 このころから、主はイスラエルを衰退に向かわせられた。ハザエルがイスラエルをその領土の至るところで侵略したのである。
10:33 侵略はヨルダン川の東側にあるギレアドの全域、ガド、ルベン、マナセの地で行われ、アルノン川の近くにあるアロエルから、ギレアドとバシャンにまで及んだ。

10:35 イエフは先祖たちと共に眠りにつき、サマリアに葬られた。その子ヨアハズがイエフに代わって王となった。

◆祭司ヨヤダとアタルヤ
11:1 アハズヤの母アタルヤは息子が死んだのを見て、直ちに王族をすべて滅ぼそうとした。
11:2 しかし、ヨラム王の娘で、アハズヤの姉妹であるヨシェバが、アハズヤの子ヨアシュを抱き、殺されようとしている王子たちの中からひそかに連れ出し、乳母と共に寝具の部屋に入れておいた。人々はヨアシュをアタルヤからかくまい、彼は殺されずに済んだ。
11:3 こうして、アタルヤが国を支配していた六年の間、ヨアシュは乳母と共に主の神殿に隠れていた。
11:4 七年目に、ヨヤダは人を遣わして、カリ人と近衛兵からなる百人隊の長たちを神殿にいる自分のところに連れて来させ、彼らと契約を結んだ。彼は主の神殿の中で彼らに誓いを立てさせ、王子を見せて、
11:5 こう命じた。「あなたたちがなすべきことはこれである。あなたたちのうち、安息日が出番に当たる者の三分の一は王宮の警備に就き、
11:6 ほかの三分の一はスルの門に詰め、残る三分の一は近衛兵の背後の門に詰め、こうしてあなたたちは交代で王宮の警備に当たれ。
11:7 安息日が非番に当たるほかの二組は主の神殿で王のそばにいて警備に当たれ。
11:8 おのおの武器を手にして、王の周囲を固めなければならない。隊列を侵す者は殺されなければならない。王が出るときも、入るときも、王と行動を共にせよ。」
11:9 百人隊の長たちは、すべて祭司ヨヤダが命じたとおり行い、おのおの安息日が出番に当たる部下と非番に当たる部下を引き連れ、祭司ヨヤダのもとに来た。
11:10 祭司は主の神殿に納められているダビデ王の槍と小盾を百人隊の長たちに渡した。
11:11 近衛兵たちはおのおの武器を手にして、祭壇と神殿を中心に神殿の南の端から北の端まで王の周囲を固めた。
11:12 そこでヨヤダが王子を連れて現れ、彼に冠をかぶらせ、掟の書を渡した。人々はこの王子を王とし、油を注ぎ、拍手して、「王万歳」と叫んだ。
11:13 アタルヤは近衛兵と民の声を聞き、主の神殿の民のところに行った。
11:14 彼女が見ると、慣例どおり柱の傍らに王が立ち、その傍らには将軍たちと吹奏隊が立ち並び、また国の民は皆喜び祝い、ラッパを吹き鳴らしていた。アタルヤは衣を裂いて、「謀反、謀反」と叫んだ。
11:15 祭司ヨヤダは、軍を指揮する百人隊の長たちに、「彼女を隊列の間から外に出せ。彼女について行こうとする者は剣にかけて殺せ」と命じた。祭司が、「彼女を主の神殿で殺してはならない」と言ったからである。
11:16 彼らはアタルヤを捕らえ、馬の出入り口を通って王宮に連れて行った。彼女はそこで殺された。
11:17 ヨヤダは、主と王と民の間に、主の民となる契約を結び、王と民の間でも契約を結んだ。
11:18 国の民は皆、バアルの神殿に行き、それを祭壇と共に破壊し、像を徹底的に打ち砕き、バアルの祭司マタンを祭壇の前で殺した。祭司ヨヤダは主の神殿の監督を定め、
11:19 更に百人隊の長、カリ人、近衛兵および国の民全員を率いて、王を主の神殿から連れ下り、近衛兵の門を通って王宮に導き、王座につけた。
11:20 こうして、国の民は皆喜び祝った。アタルヤが王宮で剣にかけられて殺された後、町は平穏であった。

◆ユダの王ヨアシュ
12:1 ヨアシュは王位についたとき、七歳であった。
12:2 イエフの治世第七年にヨアシュは王となり、四十年間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をツィブヤといい、ベエル・シェバの出身であった。
12:3 ヨアシュは、祭司ヨヤダの教えを受けて、その生涯を通じて主の目にかなう正しいことを行った。
12:4 ただ聖なる高台は取り除かれず、民は依然として聖なる高台でいけにえを屠り、香をたいた。
12:5 ヨアシュは祭司たちに言った。「主の神殿にもたらされるすべての聖なる献金、すなわち、各人がその割り当てに従って課された献金、主の神殿に自発的にもたらされるすべての献金は、
12:6 祭司たちがおのおの自分の担当の者から受け取り、神殿のどこかに破損が生じたときには、それを用いてその破損を修理しなければならない。」
12:7 だが、ヨアシュ王の治世第二十三年になっても、なお祭司たちは神殿の破損を修理しなかったので、
12:8 ヨアシュ王は祭司ヨヤダおよびほかの祭司たちを呼んで言った。「なぜ神殿の破損を修理しないのか。以後あなたたちはあなたたちの担当の者から献金を受け取ってはならない。それは神殿の破損を修理するために使われるべきものだからだ。」
12:9 祭司たちは民から献金を受け取らず、従って神殿の破損を修理する責任を負わないことに同意した。
12:10 祭司ヨヤダは一つの箱を持って来て、その蓋に穴をあけ、主の神殿の入り口の右側、祭壇の傍らにそれを置いた。入り口を守る祭司たちは、主の神殿にもたらされるすべての献金をそこに入れた。
12:11 箱の中に献金がたまったのが認められると、王の書記官と大祭司が上って来て、主の神殿にあるその献金を袋に入れて数えた。
12:12 こうして確かめられた献金は、主の神殿の役人である工事担当者に渡され、主の神殿で働く大工、建築労働者、
12:13 石工、採石労働者たちに支払われ、また神殿の破損を修理するための木材や切り石の買い入れに用いられた。すなわち、それは神殿を修理するためのあらゆる出費に当てられた。
12:14 しかし、神殿用の銀の皿、芯切り鋏、鉢、ラッパなど、金の器と銀の器はいずれも、この神殿への献金では製作されなかった。
12:15 その献金は工事担当者に渡され、主の神殿の修理のために用いられた。
12:16 工事担当者に与えるように献金を渡された人々は忠実に仕事をする者であったので、会計監査を受けることはなかった。
12:17 賠償の献げ物のための献金、贖罪の献げ物のための献金は、主の神殿に納入されず、祭司たちのものとなった。
12:18 そのころ、アラムの王ハザエルが上って来てガトを攻略し、更にエルサレムに向かって攻め上って来た。
12:19 ユダの王ヨアシュは、先祖であるユダの王ヨシャファト、ヨラム、アハズヤが聖別したすべての聖なる物、自分自身が聖別した物、および主の神殿の宝物庫と王宮にあるすべての金を取り出し、アラムの王ハザエルに送ったので、ハザエルはエルサレムを離れて行った。
12:20 ヨアシュの他の事績、彼の行ったすべての事は、『ユダの王の歴代誌』に記されている。
12:21 その家臣たちは立ち上がって謀反を起こし、シラに下って行くヨアシュをベト・ミロで打ち殺した。
12:22 彼を殺したのは、家臣のシムアトの子ヨザバドとショメルの子ヨザバドであった。彼は死んで、ダビデの町に先祖と共に葬られた。その子アマツヤがヨアシュに代わって王となった。

◆イスラエルの王ヨアハズ
13:1 ユダの王、アハズヤの子ヨアシュの治世第二十三年に、イエフの子ヨアハズがサマリアでイスラエルの王となり、十七年間王位にあった。
13:2 彼は主の目に悪とされることを行い、イスラエルに罪を犯させたネバトの子ヤロブアムの罪に従って歩み、それを離れなかった。
13:3 主はイスラエルに対して怒りを燃やし、彼らを絶えずアラムの王ハザエルの手とハザエルの子ベン・ハダドの手にお渡しになった。
13:4 しかし、ヨアハズが主をなだめたので、主はこれを聞き入れられた。主はイスラエルが圧迫されていること、アラムの王が彼らに圧迫を加えていることを御覧になったからである。
13:5 主はイスラエルに一人の救い手を与えられた。イスラエルの人々はアラムの支配から解放されて、以前のように自分たちの天幕に住めるようになった。
13:6 しかし彼らは、イスラエルに罪を犯させたヤロブアムの家の罪を離れず、それに従って歩み続けた。サマリアにはアシェラ像が立ったままであった。
13:7 主はヨアハズの軍隊として、騎兵五十騎、戦車十台、歩兵一万しか残されなかった。アラムの王が彼らを滅ぼし、踏みつけられる地の塵のようにしたからである。
13:8 ヨアハズの他の事績、彼の行ったすべての事、その功績は、『イスラエルの王の歴代誌』に記されている。
13:9 ヨアハズは先祖と共に眠りにつき、サマリアに葬られた。その子ヨアシュがヨアハズに代わって王となった。
◆イスラエルの王ヨアシュ
13:10 ユダの王ヨアシュの治世第三十七年に、ヨアハズの子ヨアシュがサマリアでイスラエルの王となり、十六年間王位にあった。
13:11 彼は主の目に悪とされることを行い、イスラエルに罪を犯させたネバトの子ヤロブアムの罪を全く離れず、それに従って歩み続けた。
13:12 ヨアシュの他の事績、彼の行ったすべての事、ユダの王アマツヤと戦った功績は、『イスラエルの王の歴代誌』に記されている。

◆エリシャの死
13:14 エリシャが死の病を患っていたときのことである。イスラエルの王ヨアシュが下って来て訪れ、彼の面前で、「わが父よ、わが父よ、イスラエルの戦車よ、その騎兵よ」と泣いた。
13:15 エリシャが王に、「弓と矢を取りなさい」と言うので、王は弓と矢を取った。
13:16 エリシャがイスラエルの王に、「弓を手にしなさい」と言うので、彼が弓を手にすると、エリシャは自分の手を王の手の上にのせて、
13:17 「東側の窓を開けなさい」と言った。王が開けると、エリシャは言った。「矢を射なさい。」王が矢を射ると、エリシャは言った。「主の勝利の矢。アラムに対する勝利の矢。あなたはアフェクでアラムを撃ち、滅ぼし尽くす。」
13:18 またエリシャは、「矢を持って来なさい」と言った。王が持って来ると、エリシャはイスラエルの王に、「地面を射なさい」と言った。王は三度地を射てやめた。
13:19 神の人は怒って王に言った。「五度、六度と射るべきであった。そうすればあなたはアラムを撃って、滅ぼし尽くしたであろう。だが今となっては、三度しかアラムを撃ち破ることができない。」
13:20 エリシャは死んで葬られた。その後、モアブの部隊が毎年この地に侵入して来た。
13:21 人々がある人を葬ろうとしていたとき、その部隊を見たので、彼をエリシャの墓に投げ込んで立ち去った。その人はエリシャの骨に触れると生き返り、自分の足で立ち上がった。
◆イスラエルとアラムの戦い
13:22 アラムの王ハザエルはヨアハズの生きている間、絶えずイスラエルに圧迫を加えた。
13:23 しかし、主はアブラハム、イサク、ヤコブと結んだ契約のゆえに、彼らを恵み、憐れみ、御顔を向け、彼らを滅ぼそうとはされず、今に至るまで、御前から捨てることはなさらなかった。
13:24 アラムの王ハザエルは死んで、その子ベン・ハダドが代わって王となった。
13:25 ヨアハズの子ヨアシュは、父ヨアハズの手から奪い取られた町々を、ハザエルの子ベン・ハダドの手から取り返した。ヨアシュは三度彼を撃ち破り、イスラエルの町々を取り返した。

◆ユダの王アマツヤ
14:1 イスラエルの王、ヨアハズの子ヨアシュの治世第二年に、ユダの王ヨアシュの子アマツヤが王となった。
14:2 彼は二十五歳で王となり、二十九年間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をヨアダンといい、エルサレムの出身であった。
14:3 彼は父祖ダビデほどではなかったが、父ヨアシュが行ったように、主の目にかなう正しいことをことごとく行った。
14:4 ただ聖なる高台は取り除かず、民は依然として聖なる高台でいけにえを屠り、香をたいていた。
14:5 彼は国を掌握すると、父ヨアシュ王を殺害した家臣たちを打ち殺した。
14:6 しかし、モーセの律法の書に記されているところに従い、殺害者の子供たちは殺さなかった。主がこう命じておられるからである。「父は子のゆえに死に定められず、子は父のゆえに死に定められない。人は、それぞれ自分の罪のゆえに死に定められる。」
14:7 アマツヤは塩の谷で一万人のエドム人を打ち、セラを攻め落とし、その名をヨクテエルと名付けた。こうしてそれは今日に至っている。
◆アマツヤとヨアシュの戦い
14:8 次いでアマツヤは、イスラエルの王、イエフの孫でヨアハズの子であるヨアシュに使者を遣わし、「来るがよい、戦いを交えよう」と言わせた。
14:9 だが、イスラエルの王ヨアシュは、ユダの王アマツヤに次のような返事を送った。「レバノンのあざみがレバノンの杉に、『あなたの娘をわたしの息子の嫁にくれ』と申し込んだが、レバノンの野の獣が通りかかって、あざみを踏み倒してしまった。
14:10 あなたはエドムを打ち破って思い上がっている。その栄誉に満足して家にとどまっているがよい。なぜ挑発して災いを招き、あなただけでなく、ユダも一緒に倒れるようなことをするのか。」
14:11 しかし、アマツヤはこれを聞き入れなかった。イスラエルの王ヨアシュは上って来て、ユダのベト・シェメシュでユダの王アマツヤと戦いを交えた。
14:12 その結果、ユダはイスラエルに惨敗し、兵はおのおのその天幕に逃げ帰ってしまった。
14:13 イスラエルの王ヨアシュはベト・シェメシュで、アハズヤの孫でヨアシュの子であるユダの王アマツヤを捕らえ、エルサレムに来て、その城壁をエフライムの門から角の門まで四百アンマにわたって破壊した。
14:14 また彼は、主の神殿と王宮の宝物庫にあるすべての金と銀、祭具および人質を取って、サマリアに凱旋した。
14:15 ヨアシュの成し遂げた他の事績、ユダの王アマツヤと戦った功績については、『イスラエルの王の歴代誌』に記されている。
14:16 ヨアシュは先祖と共に眠りにつき、イスラエルの王たちと共にサマリアに葬られた。その息子ヤロブアムがヨアシュに代わって王となった。
14:17 ユダの王、ヨアシュの子アマツヤは、イスラエルの王、ヨアハズの子ヨアシュの死後、なお十五年生き永らえた。
14:18 アマツヤの他の事績は、『ユダの王の歴代誌』に記されている。
14:19 彼に対する謀反がエルサレムで企てられたため、彼はラキシュに逃れたが、ラキシュに送られた追っ手によって殺された。
14:20 その遺体は馬に乗せてエルサレムに運ばれ、ダビデの町に先祖と共に葬られた。
14:21 ユダのすべての民は当時十六歳であったアザルヤを選び、父アマツヤの代わりに王とした。
14:22 アマツヤが先祖と共に眠りについた後、彼はエイラトの町を再建して、ユダに復帰させた。
◆イスラエルの王ヤロブアム二世
14:23 ユダの王、ヨアシュの子アマツヤの治世第十五年に、イスラエルの王、ヨアシュの子ヤロブアムがサマリアで王となり、四十一年間王位にあった。
14:24 彼は主の目に悪とされることを行い、イスラエルに罪を犯させたネバトの子ヤロブアムの罪を全く離れなかった。
14:25 しかし、イスラエルの神、主が、ガト・ヘフェル出身のその僕、預言者、アミタイの子ヨナを通して告げられた言葉のとおり、彼はレボ・ハマトからアラバの海までイスラエルの領域を回復した。
14:26 主は、イスラエルの苦しみが非常に激しいことを御覧になったからである。つながれている者も解き放たれている者もいなくなり、イスラエルを助ける者もいなかった。
14:27 しかし、主はイスラエルの名を天の下から消し去ろうとは言われず、ヨアシュの子ヤロブアムによって彼らを救われたのである。
14:28 ヤロブアムの他の事績、彼の行ったすべての事、戦いの功績、またユダのものとなっていたダマスコとハマトをイスラエルに復帰させたことは、『イスラエルの王の歴代誌』に記されている。
14:29 ヤロブアムは先祖と共に、イスラエルの王たちと共に眠りにつき、その子ゼカルヤがヤロブアムに代わって王となった。

15:1 イスラエルの王ヤロブアムの治世第二十七年に、ユダの王、アマツヤの子アザルヤが王となった。
15:2 彼は十六歳で王となり、五十二年間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をエコルヤといい、エルサレムの出身であった。
15:3 彼は、父アマツヤが行ったように、主の目にかなう正しいことをことごとく行った。
15:4 ただ聖なる高台は取り除かず、民は依然として聖なる高台でいけにえを屠り、香をたいていた。
15:5 主が王を打たれたので、王は死ぬ日まで重い皮膚病に悩まされ、隔離された家に住んだ。王子ヨタムが王宮を取りしきり、国の民を治めた。

15:7 アザルヤは先祖と共に眠りにつき、ダビデの町に先祖と共に葬られた。その子ヨタムがアザルヤに代わって王となった。
◆イスラエルの王ゼカルヤ
15:8 ユダの王アザルヤの治世第三十八年に、ヤロブアムの子ゼカルヤがサマリアでイスラエルの王となり、六か月間王位にあった。
15:9 彼は先祖たちが行ったように主の目に悪とされることを行い、イスラエルに罪を犯させたネバトの子ヤロブアムの罪を離れなかった。
15:10 ヤベシュの子シャルムが謀反を起こし、民の前でゼカルヤを打ち殺し、代わって王となった。

15:12 主はかつてイエフに、「あなたの子孫は四代にわたってイスラエルの王座につく」と告げられたが、そのとおりになった。
◆イスラエルの王シャルム
15:13 ユダの王ウジヤの治世第三十九年に、ヤベシュの子シャルムが王となり、一か月間サマリアで王位にあった。
15:14 ガディの子メナヘムは、ティルツァからサマリアに上って来て、そのサマリアでヤベシュの子シャルムを打ち殺し、代わって王となった。

15:33 彼は二十五歳で王となり、十六年間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をエルシャといい、ツァドクの娘であった。
15:34 彼は、父ウジヤが行ったように、主の目にかなう正しいことをことごとく行った。
15:35 ただ聖なる高台は取り除かず、民は依然としてその聖なる高台でいけにえをささげ、香をたいていた。彼はまた主の神殿の上の門を建てた。

◆ユダの王アハズ
16:1 レマルヤの子ペカの治世第十七年に、ユダの王ヨタムの子アハズが王となった。
16:2 アハズは二十歳で王となり、十六年間エルサレムで王位にあった。彼は父祖ダビデと異なり、自分の神、主の目にかなう正しいことを行わなかった。
16:3 彼はイスラエルの王たちの道を歩み、主がイスラエルの人々の前から追い払われた諸国の民の忌むべき慣習に倣って、自分の子に火の中を通らせることさえした。
16:4 彼は聖なる高台、丘の上、すべての茂った木の下でいけにえをささげ、香をたいた。
16:5 そのころ、アラムの王レツィンとイスラエルの王、レマルヤの子ペカがエルサレムを攻めようとして上って来た。彼らはアハズを包囲したが、戦いを仕掛けることができなかった。
16:6 このとき、アラムの王レツィンはエイラトを取り戻してアラムのものとし、ユダの人々をエイラトから追い出した。その後エドム人がエイラトに来て住み着き、今日に至っている。
16:7 アハズはアッシリアの王ティグラト・ピレセルに使者を遣わして言わせた。「わたしはあなたの僕、あなたの子です。どうか上って来て、わたしに立ち向かうアラムの王とイスラエルの王の手から、わたしを救い出してください。」
16:8 アハズはまた主の神殿と王宮の宝物庫にある銀と金を取り出し、アッシリアの王に贈り物として送った。
16:9 アッシリアの王はその願いを聞き入れた。アッシリアの王はダマスコに攻め上ってこれを占領し、その住民を捕虜としてキルに移し、レツィンを殺した。
16:10 アハズ王は、アッシリアの王ティグラト・ピレセルに会おうとしてダマスコに行き、ダマスコにある祭壇を見た。アハズ王が祭司ウリヤにその祭壇の見取り図とその詳しい作り方の説明書を送ったので、
16:11 祭司ウリヤはアハズ王がダマスコから送って来たものそっくりに祭壇を築いた。しかも祭司ウリヤは王がダマスコから帰って来るまでにそれを仕上げた。
16:12 王はダマスコから帰って来て、その祭壇を見た。王はその祭壇に近づいて、その上で献げ物をささげ、
16:13 その上で焼き尽くす献げ物と穀物の献げ物を燃やして煙にし、ぶどう酒の献げ物を注ぎ、自分のための和解の献げ物の血を祭壇に振りかけた。
16:14 主の御前にあった青銅の祭壇は、神殿の前から、すなわち新しい祭壇と主の神殿の間から移して、新しい祭壇の北側に据えた。
16:15 アハズ王は祭司ウリヤにこう命じた。「この大きな祭壇の上で、朝の焼き尽くす献げ物と夕べの穀物の献げ物、王の焼き尽くす献げ物と穀物の献げ物、すべての国の民の焼き尽くす献げ物と穀物の献げ物を燃やして煙にし、ぶどう酒の献げ物を注げ。また焼き尽くす献げ物の血とほかの献げ物の血をすべてこの祭壇に振りかけよ。あの青銅の祭壇はわたしが伺いを立てるのに用いる。」
16:16 祭司ウリヤはすべてアハズ王が命じたとおりに行った。
16:17 アハズ王は台車の鏡板を切り離し、台車の上から洗盤を取り外し、また「海」をその支えになっていた青銅の牛の上から降ろし、敷石の上に置いた。
16:18 彼はまたアッシリアの王のために、神殿の中に建てられている安息日用の廊と外側にある王の入り口を主の神殿から取り除いた。

◆イスラエルの王ホシェアとサマリアの陥落
17:1 ユダの王アハズの治世第十二年に、エラの子ホシェアがサマリアでイスラエルの王となり、九年間王位にあった。
17:2 彼は主の目に悪とされることを行ったが、彼以前のイスラエルの王たちほどではなかった。
17:3 アッシリアの王シャルマナサルが攻め上って来たとき、ホシェアは彼に服従して、貢ぎ物を納めた。
17:4 しかし、アッシリアの王は、ホシェアが謀反を企てて、エジプトの王ソに使節を派遣し、アッシリアの王に年ごとの貢ぎ物を納めなくなったのを知るに至り、彼を捕らえて牢につないだ。
17:5 アッシリアの王はこの国のすべての地に攻め上って来た。彼はサマリアに攻め上って来て、三年間これを包囲し、
17:6 ホシェアの治世第九年にサマリアを占領した。彼はイスラエル人を捕らえてアッシリアに連れて行き、ヘラ、ハボル、ゴザン川、メディアの町々に住ませた。
17:7 こうなったのは、イスラエルの人々が、彼らをエジプトの地から導き上り、エジプトの王ファラオの支配から解放した彼らの神、主に対して罪を犯し、他の神々を畏れ敬い、
17:8 主がイスラエルの人々の前から追い払われた諸国の民の風習と、イスラエルの王たちが作った風習に従って歩んだからである。
17:9 イスラエルの人々は、自分たちの神、主に対して正しくないことをひそかに行い、見張りの塔から砦の町に至るまで、すべての町に聖なる高台を建て、
17:10 どの小高い丘にも、どの茂った木の下にも、石柱やアシェラ像を立て、
17:11 主が彼らの前から移された諸国の民と同じように、すべての聖なる高台で香をたき、悪を行って主の怒りを招いた。
17:12 主が、「このようなことをしてはならない」と言っておられたのに、彼らは偶像に仕えたのである。
17:13 主はそのすべての預言者、すべての先見者を通して、イスラエルにもユダにもこう警告されていた。「あなたたちは悪の道を離れて立ち帰らなければならない。わたしがあなたたちの先祖に授け、またわたしの僕である預言者たちを通してあなたたちに伝えたすべての律法に従って、わたしの戒めと掟を守らなければならない。」
17:14 しかし彼らは聞き従うことなく、自分たちの神、主を信じようとしなかった先祖たちと同じように、かたくなであった。
17:15 彼らは主の掟と、主が先祖たちと結ばれた契約と、彼らに与えられた定めを拒み、空しいものの後を追って自らも空しくなり、主が同じようにふるまってはならないと命じられたのに、その周囲の諸国の民に倣って歩んだ。
17:16 彼らは自分たちの神、主の戒めをことごとく捨て、鋳像、二頭の子牛像を造り、アシェラ像を造り、天の万象にひれ伏し、バアルに仕えた。
17:17 息子や娘に火の中を通らせ、占いやまじないを行い、自らを売り渡して主の目に悪とされることを行い、主の怒りを招いた。
17:18 主はイスラエルに対して激しく憤り、彼らを御前から退け、ただユダの部族しか残されなかった。
17:19 ユダもまた自分たちの神、主の戒めを守らず、イスラエルの行っていた風習に従って歩んだ。
17:20 主はそこでイスラエルのすべての子孫を拒んで苦しめ、侵略者の手に渡し、ついに御前から捨てられた。
17:21 主がダビデの家からイスラエルを裂き取られたとき、このイスラエルの人々はネバトの子ヤロブアムを王としたが、ヤロブアムはイスラエルを主に従わないようにしむけ、彼らに大きな罪を犯させた。
17:22 イスラエルの人々はヤロブアムの犯したすべての罪に従って歩み、それを離れなかった。
17:23 主はついにその僕であるすべての預言者を通してお告げになっていたとおり、イスラエルを御前から退けられた。イスラエルはその土地からアッシリアに移され、今日に至っている。
17:24 アッシリアの王はバビロン、クト、アワ、ハマト、セファルワイムの人々を連れて来て、イスラエルの人々に代えてサマリアの住民とした。この人々がサマリアを占拠し、その町々に住むことになった。
17:25 彼らはそこに住み始めたころ、主を畏れ敬う者ではなかったので、主は彼らの中に獅子を送り込まれ、獅子は彼らの何人かを殺した。
17:26 彼らはアッシリアの王にこう告げた。「あなたがサマリアの町々に移り住ませた諸国の民は、この地の神の掟を知りません。彼らがこの地の神の掟を知らないので、神は彼らの中に獅子を送り込み、獅子は彼らを殺しています。」
17:27 アッシリアの王は命じた。「お前たちが連れ去った祭司の一人をそこに行かせよ。その祭司がそこに行って住み、その地の神の掟を教えさせよ。」
17:28 こうして、サマリアから連れ去られた祭司が一人戻って来てベテルに住み、どのように主を畏れ敬わなければならないかを教えた。
17:29 しかし、諸国の民はそれぞれ自分の神を造り、サマリア人の築いた聖なる高台の家に安置した。諸国の民はそれぞれ自分たちの住む町でそのように行った。
17:30 バビロンの人々はスコト・ベノトの神を造り、クトの人々はネレガルの神を造り、ハマトの人々はアシマの神を造り、
17:31 アワ人はニブハズとタルタクの神を造り、セファルワイム人は子供を火に投じて、セファルワイムの神々アドラメレクとアナメレクにささげた。
17:32 彼らは主を畏れ敬ったが、自分たちの中から聖なる高台の祭司たちを立て、その祭司たちが聖なる高台の家で彼らのために勤めを果たした。
17:33 このように彼らは主を畏れ敬うとともに、移される前にいた国々の風習に従って自分たちの神々にも仕えた。
17:34 彼らは今日に至るまで以前からの風習に従って行い、主を畏れ敬うことなく、主がイスラエルという名をお付けになったヤコブの子孫に授けられた掟、法、律法、戒めに従って行うこともない。
17:35 主は彼らと契約を結び、こう戒められた。「他の神々を畏れ敬ってはならない。これにひれ伏すことも、仕えることも、いけにえをささげることもあってはならない。
17:36 大いなる力と伸ばした腕をもってあなたたちをエジプトの地から導き上った主にのみ畏れを抱き、その前にひれ伏し、いけにえをささげよ。
17:37 主があなたたちのために記された掟と法と律法と戒めを、常に実行するように努めよ。他の神々を畏れ敬ってはならない。
17:38 わたしがあなたたちと結んだ契約を忘れてはならない。他の神々を畏れ敬ってはならない。
17:39 あなたたちの神、主にのみ畏れを抱け。そうすれば、主はすべての敵の手からあなたたちを救い出してくださる。」
17:40 しかし、彼らは聞き従わず、ただ以前からの風習に従って行うばかりであった。
17:41 このように、これらの民は主を畏れ敬うとともに、自分たちの偶像にも仕えていた。その子も孫も今日に至るまで先祖が行ったように行っている。

◆ユダの王ヒゼキヤ
18:1 イスラエルの王、エラの子ホシェアの治世第三年に、ユダの王アハズの子ヒゼキヤが王となった。
18:2 彼は二十五歳で王となり、二十九年間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をアビといい、ゼカルヤの娘であった。
18:3 彼は、父祖ダビデが行ったように、主の目にかなう正しいことをことごとく行い、
18:4 聖なる高台を取り除き、石柱を打ち壊し、アシェラ像を切り倒し、モーセの造った青銅の蛇を打ち砕いた。イスラエルの人々は、このころまでこれをネフシュタンと呼んで、これに香をたいていたからである。
18:5 彼はイスラエルの神、主に依り頼んだ。その後ユダのすべての王の中で彼のような王はなく、また彼の前にもなかった。
18:6 彼は主を固く信頼し、主に背いて離れ去ることなく、主がモーセに授けられた戒めを守った。
18:7 主は彼と共におられ、彼が何を企てても成功した。彼はアッシリアの王に刃向かい、彼に服従しなかった。
18:8 彼はペリシテ人を、ガザとその領域まで、見張りの塔から砦の町まで攻撃した。
18:9 ヒゼキヤ王の治世第四年、イスラエルの王、エラの子ホシェアの治世第七年に、アッシリアの王シャルマナサルがサマリアに攻め上って来て、これを包囲し、
18:10 三年後に占領した。サマリアが占領されたのは、ヒゼキヤの治世第六年、イスラエルの王ホシェアの第九年であった。
18:11 アッシリアの王はイスラエル人を捕らえてアッシリアに連れて行き、ヘラ、ハボル、ゴザン川、メディアの町々にとどまらせた。
18:12 こうなったのは、彼らが自分たちの神、主の御声に聞き従わず、その契約と、主の僕モーセが命じたすべてのことを破ったからである。彼らは聞き従わず、実行しなかった。
◆センナケリブの攻撃
18:13 ヒゼキヤ王の治世第十四年に、アッシリアの王センナケリブが攻め上り、ユダの砦の町をことごとく占領した。
18:14 ユダの王ヒゼキヤは、ラキシュにいるアッシリアの王に人を遣わし、「わたしは過ちを犯しました。どうかわたしのところから引き揚げてください。わたしは何を課せられても、御意向に沿う覚悟をしています」と言わせた。アッシリアの王はユダの王ヒゼキヤに銀三百キカルと金三十キカルを課した。
18:15 ヒゼキヤは主の神殿と王宮の宝物庫にあったすべての銀を贈った。
18:16 またこのときユダの王であるヒゼキヤは、自分が金で覆った主の神殿の扉と柱を切り取り、アッシリアの王に贈った。
18:17 アッシリアの王は、ラキシュからタルタン、ラブ・サリスおよびラブ・シャケを大軍と共にヒゼキヤ王のいるエルサレムに遣わした。彼らはエルサレムに上って来た。彼らは上って来て、布さらしの野に至る大通りに沿って上の貯水池から来る水路の傍らに立ち止まった。
18:18 彼らは王に呼びかけると、ヒルキヤの子である宮廷長エルヤキム、書記官シェブナ、アサフの子である補佐官ヨアが彼らの前に出て行った。
18:19 そこでラブ・シャケは彼らに言った。「ヒゼキヤに伝えよ。大王、アッシリアの王はこう言われる。なぜこんな頼りないものに頼っているのか。
18:20 ただ舌先だけの言葉が戦略であり戦力であると言うのか。今お前は誰を頼みにしてわたしに刃向かうのか。
18:21 今お前はエジプトというあの折れかけの葦の杖を頼みにしているが、それはだれでも寄りかかる者の手を刺し貫くだけだ。エジプトの王ファラオは自分を頼みとするすべての者にとってそのようになる。
18:22 お前たちは、『我々は我々の神、主に依り頼む』と言っているが、ヒゼキヤはユダとエルサレムに向かい、『エルサレムにあるこの祭壇の前で礼拝せよ』と言って、その主の聖なる高台と祭壇を取り除いたのではなかったか。
18:23 今わが主君、アッシリアの王とかけをせよ。もしお前の方でそれだけの乗り手を準備できるなら、こちらから二千頭の馬を与えよう。
18:24 戦車について、騎兵についてエジプトなどを頼みにしているお前に、どうしてわが主君の家臣のうちの最も小さい総督の一人すら追い返すことができようか。
18:25 わたしは今、主とかかわりなくこの所を滅ぼしに来たのだろうか。主がわたしに、『この地に向かって攻め上り、これを滅ぼせ』とお命じになったのだ。」
18:26 ヒルキヤの子エルヤキムとシェブナとヨアは、ラブ・シャケに願った。「僕どもはアラム語が分かります。どうぞアラム語でお話しください。城壁の上にいる民が聞いているところで、わたしどもにユダの言葉で話さないでください。」
18:27 だがラブ・シャケは彼らに言った。「わが主君がこれらのことを告げるためにわたしを遣わしたのは、お前の主君やお前のためだけだとでもいうのか。城壁の上に座っている者たちのためにも遣わしたのではないか。彼らもお前たちと共に自分の糞尿を飲み食いするようになるのだから。」
18:28 ラブ・シャケは立ってユダの言葉で大声で呼ばわり、こう言い放った。「大王、アッシリアの王の言葉を聞け。
18:29 王はこう言われる。『ヒゼキヤにだまされるな。彼はお前たちをわたしの手から救い出すことはできない。
18:30 ヒゼキヤはお前たちに、主が必ず我々を救い出してくださる、決してこの都がアッシリアの王の手に渡されることはない、と言って、主に依り頼ませようとするが、そうさせてはならない。』
18:31 ヒゼキヤの言うことを聞くな。アッシリアの王がこう言われるからだ。『わたしと和を結び、降伏せよ。そうすればお前たちは皆、自分のぶどうといちじくの実を食べ、自分の井戸の水を飲むことができる。
18:32 やがてわたしは来て、お前たちをお前たちの地と同じような地、穀物と新しいぶどう酒の地、パンとぶどう畑の地、オリーブと新鮮な油と蜜の地に連れて行く。こうしてお前たちは命を得、死なずに済む』と。ヒゼキヤの言うことを聞くな。彼は、主は我々を救い出してくださる、と言って、お前たちを惑わしているのだ。
18:33 諸国の神々は、それぞれ自分の地をアッシリア王の手から救い出すことができたであろうか。
18:34 ハマトやアルパドの神々はどこに行ったのか。セファルワイムやヘナやイワの神々はどこに行ったのか。サマリアをわたしの手から救い出した神があっただろうか。
18:35 国々のすべての神々のうち、どの神が自分の国をわたしの手から救い出したか。それでも主はエルサレムをわたしの手から救い出すと言うのか。」
18:36 しかし民は、答えてはならないと王に戒められていたので、押し黙ってひと言も答えなかった。
18:37 ヒルキヤの子である宮廷長エルヤキム、書記官シェブナ、アサフの子である補佐官ヨアは衣を裂き、ヒゼキヤのもとに来てラブ・シャケの言葉を伝えた。

19:1 ヒゼキヤ王はこれを聞くと衣を裂き、粗布を身にまとって主の神殿に行った。
19:2 また彼は宮廷長エルヤキム、書記官シェブナ、および祭司の長老たちに粗布をまとわせ、預言者、アモツの子イザヤのもとに遣わした。
19:3 彼らはイザヤに言った。「ヒゼキヤはこう言われる。『今日は苦しみと、懲らしめと、辱めの日、胎児は産道に達したが、これを産み出す力がない。
19:4 生ける神をののしるために、その主君、アッシリアの王によって遣わされて来たラブ・シャケのすべての言葉を、あなたの神、主は恐らく聞かれたことであろう。あなたの神、主はお聞きになったその言葉をとがめられるであろうが、ここに残っている者のために祈ってほしい。』」
19:5 ヒゼキヤ王の家臣たちがイザヤのもとに来ると、
19:6 イザヤは言った。「あなたたちの主君にこう言いなさい。『主なる神はこう言われる。あなたは、アッシリアの王の従者たちがわたしを冒涜する言葉を聞いても、恐れてはならない。
19:7 見よ、わたしは彼の中に霊を送り、彼がうわさを聞いて自分の地に引き返すようにする。彼はその地で剣にかけられて倒される。』」
19:8 ラブ・シャケは、王がラキシュをたったということを聞いて引き返し、リブナを攻撃しているアッシリアの王と落ち合った。
19:9 王はそこでクシュの王ティルハカについて、「あなたと戦いを交えようと軍を進めている」との知らせを受けた。彼は再びヒゼキヤに使者を遣わして言わせた。
19:10 「ユダの王ヒゼキヤにこう言え。お前が依り頼んでいる神にだまされ、エルサレムはアッシリアの王の手に渡されることはないと思ってはならない。
19:11 お前はアッシリアの王たちが、すべての国々を滅ぼし去るために行ったことを聞いているであろう。それでも、お前だけが救い出されると言うのか。
19:12 わたしの先祖たちはゴザン、ハラン、レツェフおよびテラサルにいたエデンの人々を打ち滅ぼしたが、これらの諸国の神々は彼らを救いえたであろうか。
19:13 ハマトの王、アルパドの王、セファルワイムの町の王、ヘナやイワの王はどこに行ったのか。」
19:14 ヒゼキヤはこの手紙を使者の手から受け取って読むと、主の神殿に上って行った。ヒゼキヤはそれを主の前に広げ、
19:15 主の前で祈った。「ケルビムの上に座しておられるイスラエルの神、主よ。あなただけが地上のすべての王国の神であり、あなたこそ天と地をお造りになった方です。
19:16 主よ、耳を傾けて聞いてください。主よ、目を開いて御覧ください。生ける神をののしるために人を遣わしてきたセンナケリブの言葉を聞いてください。
19:17 主よ、確かにアッシリアの王たちは諸国とその国土を荒らし、
19:18 その神々を火に投げ込みましたが、それらは神ではなく、木や石であって、人間が手で造ったものにすぎません。彼らはこれを滅ぼしてしまいました。
19:19 わたしたちの神、主よ、どうか今わたしたちを彼の手から救い、地上のすべての王国が、あなただけが主なる神であることを知るに至らせてください。」
19:20 アモツの子イザヤは、ヒゼキヤに人を遣わして言った。「イスラエルの神、主はこう言われる。『アッシリアの王センナケリブのことであなたがわたしにささげた祈りをわたしは聞いた。』
19:21 主がアッシリアの王に向かって告げられた言葉はこうである。おとめである、娘シオンは／お前を辱め、お前を嘲る。娘エルサレムは／お前に背を向け、頭を振る。
19:22 お前は誰をののしり、侮ったのか。誰に向かって大声をあげ／高慢な目つきをしたのか。イスラエルの聖なる方に向かってではなかったか。
19:23 お前は使者を送って／主をののしって言った。『わたしは多くの戦車を率いて／山々の高みに駆け登り／レバノンの奥深く進み／最も高く伸びたレバノン杉も／最も見事な糸杉も切り倒した。その果てに達した宿営地は／木の生い茂る森林であった。
19:24 わたしは井戸を掘って異国の水を飲んだが／エジプトのナイルの水流はことごとく／足の裏で踏みつけて干上がらせた。』
19:25 お前は聞いたことがないのか／はるか昔にわたしが計画を立てていたことを。いにしえの日に心に描いたことを／わたしは今実現させた。お前はこうして砦の町々を／瓦礫の山にすることとなった。
19:26 力を失ったその住民は／打ちのめされて恥に覆われ／野の草、青草のように／穂をつける前にしなびる／屋根に生える草のようになった。
19:27 お前が座っているのも／出て行くのも、入って来るのも／わたしは知っている。またわたしに向かって怒りに震えていることも。
19:28 お前がわたしに向かって怒りに震え／その驕りがわたしの耳にまで昇ってきたために／わたしはお前の鼻に鉤をかけ／口にくつわをはめ／お前が来た道を通って帰って行くようにする。
19:29 あなたにそのことを示すしるしはこうである。今年は落ち穂から生じた穀物を食べ、二年目は自然に生じたものを食べ、三年目には種を蒔いて刈り入れ、ぶどう畑を作り、その実りを食べる。
19:30 ユダの家の中で難を免れ、残った者たちは再び根を下ろし、上には実を結ぶ。
19:31 エルサレムから残った者が、シオンの山から難を免れた者が現れ出る。万軍の主の熱情がこれを成就される。
19:32 それゆえ、主はアッシリアの王についてこう言われる。彼がこの都に入城することはない。またそこに矢を射ることも、盾を持って向かって来ることも、都に対して土塁を築くこともない。
19:33 彼は来た道を引き返し、この都に入城することはない、と主は言われる。
19:34 わたしはこの都を守り抜いて救う。わたし自らのために、わが僕ダビデのために。」
19:35 その夜、主の御使いが現れ、アッシリアの陣営で十八万五千人を撃った。朝早く起きてみると、彼らは皆死体となっていた。
19:36 アッシリアの王センナケリブは、そこをたって帰って行き、ニネベに落ち着いた。
19:37 彼が自分の神ニスロクの神殿で礼拝しているときに、アドラメレクとサルエツェルが彼を剣にかけて殺した。彼らはアララトの地に逃亡し、センナケリブに代わってその子エサル・ハドンが王となった。

◆ヒゼキヤの病気
20:1 そのころ、ヒゼキヤは死の病にかかった。預言者、アモツの子イザヤが訪ねて来て、「主はこう言われる。『あなたは死ぬことになっていて、命はないのだから、家族に遺言をしなさい』」と言った。
20:2 ヒゼキヤは顔を壁に向けて、主にこう祈った。
20:3 「ああ、主よ、わたしがまことを尽くし、ひたむきな心をもって御前を歩み、御目にかなう善いことを行ってきたことを思い起こしてください。」こう言って、ヒゼキヤは涙を流して大いに泣いた。
20:4 イザヤが中庭を出ないうちに、主の言葉が彼に臨んだ。
20:5 「わが民の君主ヒゼキヤのもとに戻って言いなさい。『あなたの父祖ダビデの神、主はこう言われる。わたしはあなたの祈りを聞き、涙を見た。見よ、わたしはあなたをいやし、三日目にあなたは主の神殿に上れるだろう。
20:6 わたしはあなたの寿命を十五年延ばし、アッシリアの王の手からあなたとこの都を救い出す。わたしはわたし自身のために、わが僕ダビデのために、この都を守り抜く。』」
20:7 イザヤが、「干しいちじくを取って来るように」と言うので、人々がそれを取って来て患部に当てると、ヒゼキヤは回復した。
20:8 ヒゼキヤはイザヤに言った。「主がわたしをいやされ、わたしが三日目に主の神殿に上れることを示すしるしは何でしょうか。」
20:9 イザヤは答えた。「ここに主によって与えられるしるしがあります。それによって主は約束なさったことを実現されることが分かります。影が十度進むか、十度戻るかです。」
20:10 ヒゼキヤは答えた。「影が十度伸びるのは容易なことです。むしろ影を十度後戻りさせてください。」
20:11 そこで預言者イザヤが主に祈ると、主は日時計の影、アハズの日時計に落ちた影を十度後戻りさせられた。
◆バビロンからの見舞い客
20:12 そのころ、バビロンの王、バルアダンの子メロダク・バルアダンは、ヒゼキヤが病気であるということを聞いて、ヒゼキヤに手紙と贈り物を送って来た。
20:13 ヒゼキヤは使者たちを歓迎し、銀、金、香料、上等の油など宝物庫のすべて、武器庫、また、倉庫にある一切のものを彼らに見せた。ヒゼキヤが彼らに見せなかったものは、宮中はもとより国中に一つもなかった。
20:14 預言者イザヤはヒゼキヤ王のところに来て、「あの人々は何を言ったのですか。どこから訪ねて来たのですか」と問うた。ヒゼキヤは、「彼らは遠い国、バビロンから来ました」と答えた。
20:15 更に、「彼らは王宮で何を見たのですか」と問うと、ヒゼキヤは、「王宮にあるものは何もかも見ました。倉庫の中のものも見せなかったものは何一つありません」と答えた。
20:16 そこでイザヤはヒゼキヤに言った。「主の言葉を聞きなさい。
20:17 『王宮にあるもの、あなたの先祖が今日まで蓄えてきたものが、ことごとくバビロンに運び去られ、何も残らなくなる日が来る、と主は言われる。
20:18 あなたから生まれた息子の中には、バビロン王の宮殿に連れて行かれ、宦官にされる者もある。』」
20:19 ヒゼキヤはイザヤに、「あなたの告げる主の言葉はありがたいものです」と答えた。彼は、自分の在世中は平和と安定が続くのではないかと思っていた。
20:20 ヒゼキヤの他の事績、彼の功績のすべて、貯水池と水道を造って都に水を引いたことは、『ユダの王の歴代誌』に記されている。
20:21 ヒゼキヤは先祖と共に眠りにつき、その子マナセがヒゼキヤに代わって王となった。

◆ユダの王マナセ
21:1 マナセは十二歳で王となり、五十五年間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をヘフツィ・バと言った。
21:2 彼は主がイスラエルの人々の前から追い払われた諸国の民の忌むべき慣習に倣い、主の目に悪とされることを行った。
21:3 彼は父ヒゼキヤが廃した聖なる高台を再建し、イスラエルの王アハブが行ったようにバアルの祭壇を築き、アシェラ像を造った。更に彼は天の万象の前にひれ伏し、これに仕えた。
21:4 主はかつて、「エルサレムにわたしの名を置く」と言われたが、その主の神殿の中に彼は異教の祭壇を築いた。
21:5 彼はまた、主の神殿の二つの庭に天の万象のための祭壇を築いた。
21:6 彼は自分の子に火の中を通らせ、占いやまじないを行い、口寄せや霊媒を用いるなど、主の目に悪とされることを数々行って主の怒りを招いた。
21:7 彼はまたアシェラの彫像を造り、神殿に置いた。主はその神殿について、かつてダビデとその子ソロモンにこう仰せになった。「わたしはこの神殿に、イスラエルの全部族の中から選んだエルサレムに、とこしえにわたしの名を置く。
21:8 もし彼らがわたしの命じるすべてのこと、すなわちわが僕モーセが彼らに授けたすべての律法を行うよう努めるなら、わたしはイスラエルをその先祖に与えた土地から二度と迷い出させない。」
21:9 しかし彼らはこれに聞き従わず、マナセに惑わされて、主がイスラエルの人々の前で滅ぼされた諸国の民よりも更に悪い事を行った。
21:10 主はその僕である預言者たちを通してこう告げられた。
21:11 「ユダの王マナセはこれらの忌むべき事を行い、かつてアモリ人の行ったすべての事より、更に悪い事を行い、その偶像によってユダにまで罪を犯させた。
21:12 それゆえ、イスラエルの神、主はこう言われる。見よ、わたしはエルサレムとユダに災いをもたらす。これを聞く者は皆、両方の耳が鳴る。
21:13 わたしはサマリアに使った測り縄とアハブの家に使った下げ振りをエルサレムに用いる。鉢をぬぐい、それをぬぐって伏せるように、わたしはエルサレムをぬぐい去る。
21:14 わたしはわが嗣業の残りの者を見捨て、敵の手に渡す。彼らはそのすべての敵の餌食となり、略奪の的となる。
21:15 彼らは先祖がエジプトを出た日から今日に至るまでわたしの意に背くことを行い、わたしを怒らせてきたからである。」
21:16 マナセは主の目に悪とされることをユダに行わせて、罪を犯させた。彼はその罪を犯したばかりでなく、罪のない者の血を非常に多く流し、その血でエルサレムを端から端まで満たした。
21:17 マナセの他の事績、彼の行ったすべての事、彼の犯した罪は、『ユダの王の歴代誌』に記されている。
21:18 マナセは先祖と共に眠りにつき、自分の宮殿の庭園、すなわちウザの庭園に葬られた。その子アモンがマナセに代わって王となった。
◆ユダの王アモン
21:19 アモンは二十二歳で王となり、二年間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をメシュレメトといい、ヨトバ出身のハルツの娘であった。
21:20 彼は父マナセが行ったように、主の目に悪とされることを行った。
21:21 父の歩んだ道をそのまま歩み、父が仕えた偶像に彼も仕え、その前にひれ伏し、
21:22 先祖の神、主を捨て、主の道を歩まなかった。
21:23 彼の家臣たちは謀反を起こし、この王を宮殿で殺害した。
21:24 しかし国の民は、アモン王に対して謀反を起こしたすべての者を討ち、その子ヨシヤをアモンの代わりに王とした。
21:25 アモンの行った他の事績は、『ユダの王の歴代誌』に記されている。
21:26 彼はウザの庭園にある彼の墓に葬られた。その子ヨシヤがアモンに代わって王となった。

◆ユダの王ヨシヤ
22:1 ヨシヤは八歳で王となり、三十一年間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をエディダといい、ボツカト出身のアダヤの娘であった。
22:2 彼は主の目にかなう正しいことを行い、父祖ダビデの道をそのまま歩み、右にも左にもそれなかった。
22:3 ヨシヤ王の治世第十八年に、王はメシュラムの孫でアツァルヤの子である書記官シャファンを主の神殿に遣わして言った。
22:4 「大祭司ヒルキヤのもとに上り、主の神殿に納められた献金、すなわち入り口を守る者たちが民から集めたものを集計させなさい。
22:5 それを主の神殿の責任を負っている工事担当者の手に渡し、更に神殿の破損を修理するために主の神殿にいる工事担当者に渡しなさい。
22:6 すなわち職人、建築作業員、石工に渡し、神殿修理のための木材や切り石を買わせなさい。
22:7 ただし、彼らは忠実に仕事をしているから、彼らに渡した金の監査は必要ではない。」
22:8 そのとき大祭司ヒルキヤは書記官シャファンに、「わたしは主の神殿で律法の書を見つけました」と言った。ヒルキヤがその書をシャファンに渡したので、彼はそれを読んだ。
22:9 書記官シャファンは王のもとに来て、王に報告した。「僕どもは神殿にあった献金を取り出して、主の神殿の責任を負っている工事担当者の手に渡しました。」
22:10 更に書記官シャファンは王に、「祭司ヒルキヤがわたしに一つの書を渡しました」と告げ、王の前でその書を読み上げた。
22:11 王はその律法の書の言葉を聞くと、衣を裂いた。
22:12 王は祭司ヒルキヤ、シャファンの子アヒカム、ミカヤの子アクボル、書記官シャファン、王の家臣アサヤにこう命じた。
22:13 「この見つかった書の言葉について、わたしのため、民のため、ユダ全体のために、主の御旨を尋ねに行け。我々の先祖がこの書の言葉に耳を傾けず、我々についてそこに記されたとおりにすべての事を行わなかったために、我々に向かって燃え上がった主の怒りは激しいからだ。」
22:14 祭司ヒルキヤ、アヒカム、アクボル、シャファン、アサヤは女預言者フルダのもとに行った。彼女はハルハスの孫でティクワの子である衣装係シャルムの妻で、エルサレムのミシュネ地区に住んでいた。彼らが彼女に話し聞かせると、
22:15 彼女は答えた。「イスラエルの神、主はこう言われる。『あなたたちをわたしのもとに遣わした者に言いなさい。
22:16 主はこう言われる。見よ、わたしはユダの王が読んだこの書のすべての言葉のとおりに、この所とその住民に災いをくだす。
22:17 彼らがわたしを捨て、他の神々に香をたき、自分たちの手で造ったすべてのものによってわたしを怒らせたために、わたしの怒りはこの所に向かって燃え上がり、消えることはない。
22:18 主の心を尋ねるためにあなたたちを遣わしたユダの王にこう言いなさい。あなたが聞いた言葉について、イスラエルの神、主はこう言われる。
22:19 わたしがこの所とその住民につき、それが荒れ果て呪われたものとなると言ったのを聞いて、あなたは心を痛め、主の前にへりくだり、衣を裂き、わたしの前で泣いたので、わたしはあなたの願いを聞き入れた、と主は言われる。
22:20 それゆえ、見よ、わたしはあなたを先祖の数に加える。あなたは安らかに息を引き取って墓に葬られるであろう。わたしがこの所にくだす災いのどれも、その目で見ることがない。』」彼らはこれを王に報告した。

23:1 そこで王は人を遣わして、ユダとエルサレムのすべての長老を自分のもとに集めた。
23:2 王は、ユダのすべての人々、エルサレムのすべての住民、祭司と預言者、下の者から上の者まで、すべての民と共に主の神殿に上り、主の神殿で見つかった契約の書のすべての言葉を彼らに読み聞かせた。
23:3 それから王は柱の傍らに立って、主の御前で契約を結び、主に従って歩み、心を尽くし、魂を尽くして主の戒めと定めと掟を守り、この書に記されているこの契約の言葉を実行することを誓った。民も皆、この契約に加わった。
23:4 王は大祭司ヒルキヤと次席祭司たち、入り口を守る者たちに命じて、主の神殿からバアルやアシェラや天の万象のために造られた祭具類をすべて運び出させた。彼はそれをエルサレムの外、キドロンの野で焼き払わせ、その灰をベテルに持って行かせた。
23:5 王はユダの諸王が立てて、ユダの町々やエルサレム周辺の聖なる高台で香をたかせてきた神官たち、またバアルや太陽、月、星座、天の万象に香をたく者たちを廃止した。
23:6 彼はアシェラ像を主の神殿からエルサレムの外のキドロンの谷に運び出し、キドロンの谷で焼き、砕いて灰にし、その灰を民の共同墓地に振りまいた。
23:7 彼は主の神殿の中にあった神殿男娼の家を取り壊した。そこは女たちがアシェラ像のために布を織っていたところでもあった。
23:8 王はユダの町々から祭司をすべて呼び寄せ、ゲバからベエル・シェバに至るまでの祭司たちが香をたいていた聖なる高台を汚し、城門にあった聖なる高台をも取り壊した。これは町の長ヨシュアの門の入り口にあり、町の門を入る人の左側にあった。
23:9 聖なる高台の祭司たちは、エルサレムの主の祭壇に上ることはなかったが、その兄弟たちにまじって酵母を入れないパンを食べた。
23:10 王はベン・ヒノムの谷にあるトフェトを汚し、だれもモレクのために自分の息子、娘に火の中を通らせることのないようにした。
23:11 彼はユダの王たちが太陽にささげて、主の神殿の入り口、前庭の宦官ネタン・メレクの部屋の傍らに置いた馬を除き去り、太陽の戦車を火で焼いた。
23:12 王はユダの王たちがアハズの階上の部屋の上に造った祭壇と、マナセが主の神殿の二つの庭に造った祭壇を取り壊し、そこで打ち砕いて、その灰をキドロンの谷に投げ捨てた。
23:13 王はエルサレムの東、つまり滅びの山の南にあった聖なる高台を汚した。これはイスラエルの王ソロモンが、シドン人の憎むべき神アシュトレトのため、モアブ人の憎むべき神ケモシュのため、アンモン人の忌むべき神ミルコムのために築いたものであった。
23:14 彼は石柱を砕き、アシェラ像を切り倒し、人の骨でその場所を満たした。
23:15 彼はまたベテルにあった祭壇と、イスラエルに罪を犯させたネバトの子ヤロブアムが造った聖なる高台、すなわちその祭壇と聖なる高台を取り壊し、更に聖なる高台を焼いて粉々に砕き、アシェラ像を焼き捨てた。
23:16 ヨシヤは振り向いて、山に墓があるのを見、その墓の骨を取りにやり、その骨を祭壇の上で焼いて祭壇を汚した。かつて神の人がこのことを告げたが、その神の人の告げた主の言葉のとおりになった。
23:17 ヨシヤは、「あそこに見える石碑は何か」と言った。町の人々は、「神の人の墓です。この人はユダから来て、あなたがベテルの祭壇になさったことを予告しました」と答えたので、
23:18 彼は、「そのままにしておくがよい。だれもその骨に触れるな」と言った。こうして人々は、サマリアから来た預言者の骨とともに彼の骨をそのままにしておいた。
23:19 ヨシヤはまたサマリアの町々にあった聖なる高台の神殿をすべて取り除いた。これらはイスラエルの王たちが造って主の怒りを招いたものであった。彼はベテルで行ったのと全く同じようにこれらに対しても行った。
23:20 彼はそこにいた聖なる高台の祭司たちを一人残らずその祭壇の上で殺し、人の骨をそこで焼き、エルサレムに帰った。
23:21 王はすべての民に命じて言った。「この契約の書に記されているとおり、あなたたちの神、主の過越祭を祝え。」
23:22 士師たちがイスラエルを治めていた時代からこの方、イスラエルの王、ユダの王の時代を通じて、このような過越祭が祝われることはなかった。
23:23 ヨシヤ王の治世第十八年に、エルサレムでこの主の過越祭が祝われた。
23:24 ヨシヤはまた口寄せ、霊媒、テラフィム、偶像、ユダの地とエルサレムに見られる憎むべきものを一掃した。こうして彼は祭司ヒルキヤが主の神殿で見つけた書に記されている律法の言葉を実行した。
23:25 彼のように全くモーセの律法に従って、心を尽くし、魂を尽くし、力を尽くして主に立ち帰った王は、彼の前にはなかった。彼の後にも、彼のような王が立つことはなかった。
23:26 しかし、マナセの引き起こした主のすべての憤りのために、主はユダに向かって燃え上がった激しい怒りの炎を収めようとなさらなかった。
23:27 主は言われた。「わたしはイスラエルを退けたようにユダもわたしの前から退け、わたしが選んだこの都エルサレムも、わたしの名を置くと言ったこの神殿もわたしは忌み嫌う。」
23:28 ヨシヤの他の事績、彼の行ったすべての事は、『ユダの王の歴代誌』に記されている。
23:29 彼の治世に、エジプトの王ファラオ・ネコが、アッシリアの王に向かってユーフラテス川を目指して上って来た。ヨシヤ王はこれを迎え撃とうとして出て行ったが、ネコは彼に出会うと、メギドで彼を殺した。
23:30 ヨシヤの家臣たちは戦死した王を戦車に乗せ、メギドからエルサレムに運び、彼の墓に葬った。国の民はヨシヤの子ヨアハズを選んで、油を注ぎ、父の代わりに王とした。
◆ユダの王ヨアハズ
23:31 ヨアハズは二十三歳で王となり、三か月間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をハムタルといい、リブナ出身のイルメヤの娘であった。
23:32 彼は先祖たちが行ったように、主の目に悪とされることをことごとく行った。
23:33 ファラオ・ネコは、エルサレムで王位にあった彼をハマトの地のリブラに幽閉し、その国には科料として銀百キカル、金一キカルを課した。
23:34 ファラオ・ネコはヨシヤの子エルヤキムを父ヨシヤの代わりに王とし、名をヨヤキムと改めさせた。一方、ヨアハズはエジプトに連れて行かれ、そこで死んだ。
23:35 ヨヤキムはファラオに銀と金を差し出したが、ファラオの要求に従って銀を差し出すためには、国に税を課さなければならなかった。彼はファラオ・ネコに差し出すために、それぞれの割り当てに従って国の民に銀と金を要求した。
◆ユダの王ヨヤキム
23:36 ヨヤキムは二十五歳で王となり、十一年間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をゼブダといい、ルマ出身のペダヤの娘であった。
23:37 彼は先祖たちが行ったように、主の目に悪とされることをことごとく行った。

24:1 彼の治世に、バビロンの王ネブカドネツァルが攻め上って来た。ヨヤキムは三年間彼に服従したが、再び反逆した。
24:2 主は彼に対してカルデア人の部隊、アラム人の部隊、モアブ人の部隊、アンモン人の部隊を遣わされた。主はその僕である預言者たちによってお告げになった主の言葉のとおり、ユダを滅ぼすために彼らを差し向けられた。
24:3 ユダが主の御前から退けられることは、まさに主の御命令によるが、それはマナセの罪のため、彼の行ったすべての事のためであり、
24:4 またマナセが罪のない者の血を流し、エルサレムを罪のない者の血で満たしたためである。主はそれを赦そうとはされなかった。

24:6 ヨヤキムは先祖と共に眠りにつき、その子ヨヤキンが代わって王となった。
24:7 エジプトの王は自分の地から再び出て来ることがなかった。バビロンの王が、エジプトの川からユーフラテス川に至るまで、エジプトの王のものであったすべての地方を占領したからである。
◆ユダの王ヨヤキン
24:8 ヨヤキンは十八歳で王となり、三か月間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をネフシュタといい、エルサレム出身のエルナタンの娘であった。
24:9 彼は父が行ったように、主の目に悪とされることをことごとく行った。
24:10 そのころ、バビロンの王ネブカドネツァルの部将たちがエルサレムに攻め上って来て、この都を包囲した。
24:11 部将たちが都を包囲しているところに、バビロンの王ネブカドネツァルも来た。
24:12 ユダの王ヨヤキンは母、家臣、高官、宦官らと共にバビロン王の前に出て行き、バビロンの王はその治世第八年に彼を捕らえた。
24:13 主が告げられたとおり、バビロンの王は主の神殿の宝物と王宮の宝物をことごとく運び出し、イスラエルの王ソロモンが主の聖所のために造った金の器をことごとく切り刻んだ。
24:14 彼はエルサレムのすべての人々、すなわちすべての高官とすべての勇士一万人、それにすべての職人と鍛冶を捕囚として連れ去り、残されたのはただ国の民の中の貧しい者だけであった。
24:15 彼はヨヤキンを捕囚としてバビロンに連れ去り、その王の母、王妃たち、宦官たち、国の有力者たちも、捕囚としてエルサレムからバビロンに行かせた。
24:16 バビロンの王はすべての軍人七千人、職人と鍛冶千人、勇敢な戦士全員を、捕囚としてバビロンに連れて行った。
24:17 バビロンの王はヨヤキンに代えて、そのおじマタンヤを王とし、その名をゼデキヤと改めさせた。
◆ユダの王ゼデキヤ
24:18 ゼデキヤは二十一歳で王となり、十一年間エルサレムで王位にあった。その母は名をハムタルといい、リブナ出身のイルメヤの娘であった。
24:19 彼はヨヤキムが行ったように、主の目に悪とされることをことごとく行った。
24:20 エルサレムとユダは主の怒りによってこのような事態になり、ついにその御前から捨て去られることになった。ゼデキヤはバビロンの王に反旗を翻した。

◆エルサレムの陥落
25:1 ゼデキヤの治世第九年の第十の月の十日に、バビロンの王ネブカドネツァルは全軍を率いてエルサレムに到着し、陣を敷き、周りに堡塁を築いた。
25:2 都は包囲され、ゼデキヤ王の第十一年に至った。
25:3 その月の九日に都の中で飢えが厳しくなり、国の民の食糧が尽き、
25:4 都の一角が破られた。カルデア人が都を取り巻いていたが、戦士たちは皆、夜中に王の園に近い二つの城壁の間にある門を通って逃げ出した。王はアラバに向かって行った。
25:5 カルデア軍は王の後を追い、エリコの荒れ地で彼に追いついた。王の軍隊はすべて王を離れ去ってちりぢりになった。
25:6 王は捕らえられ、リブラにいるバビロンの王のもとに連れて行かれ、裁きを受けた。
25:7 彼らはゼデキヤの目の前で彼の王子たちを殺し、その上でバビロンの王は彼の両眼をつぶし、青銅の足枷をはめ、彼をバビロンに連れて行った。
25:8 第五の月の七日、バビロンの王ネブカドネツァルの第十九年のこと、バビロンの王の家臣、親衛隊の長ネブザルアダンがエルサレムに来て、
25:9 主の神殿、王宮、エルサレムの家屋をすべて焼き払った。大いなる家屋もすべて、火を放って焼き払った。
25:10 また親衛隊の長と共に来たカルデア人は、軍をあげてエルサレムの周囲の城壁を取り壊した。
25:11 民のうち都に残っていたほかの者、バビロンの王に投降した者、その他の民衆は、親衛隊の長ネブザルアダンによって捕囚とされ、連れ去られた。
25:12 この地の貧しい民の一部は、親衛隊の長によってぶどう畑と耕地にそのまま残された。
25:13 カルデア人は主の神殿の青銅の柱、台車、主の神殿にあった青銅の「海」を砕いて、その青銅をバビロンへ運び去り、
25:14 壺、十能、芯切り鋏、柄杓など、祭儀用の青銅の器をことごとく奪い取った。
25:15 また親衛隊の長は、火皿、鉢など、金製品も銀製品もすべて奪い取った。
25:16 ソロモンが主の神殿のために作らせた二本の柱、一つの「海」、台車についていえば、これらすべてのものの青銅の重量は量りきれなかった。
25:17 一本の柱の高さは十八アンマで、その上に青銅の柱頭があり、その柱頭の高さが三アンマ、柱頭の周りには格子模様の浮き彫りとざくろがあって、このすべてが青銅であった。もう一本の柱も格子模様の浮き彫りまで同様に出来ていた。
25:18 親衛隊の長は、祭司長セラヤ、次席祭司ツェファンヤ、入り口を守る者三人を捕らえた。
25:19 また彼は、戦士の監督をする宦官一人、都にいた王の側近五人、国の民の徴兵を担当する将軍の書記官、および都にいた国の民六十人を都から連れ去った。
25:20 親衛隊の長ネブザルアダンは彼らを捕らえて、リブラにいるバビロンの王のもとに連れて行った。
25:21 バビロンの王はハマト地方のリブラで彼らを打ち殺した。こうしてユダは自分の土地を追われて捕囚となった。
◆ユダの統治者ゲダルヤ
25:22 バビロンの王ネブカドネツァルは、彼が残して、ユダの地にとどまった民の上に、シャファンの孫でアヒカムの子であるゲダルヤを総督として立てた。
25:23 すべての軍の長たちはその部下と共に、バビロンの王がゲダルヤを立てて総督としたことを聞き、ミツパにいるゲダルヤのもとに集まって来た。それはネタンヤの子イシュマエル、カレアの子ヨハナン、ネトファ人タンフメトの子セラヤ、マアカ人の子ヤアザンヤとその部下たちであった。
25:24 ゲダルヤは彼らとその部下たちに誓って言った。「カルデア人の役人を恐れてはならない。この地にとどまり、バビロンの王に仕えなさい。あなたたちは幸せになる。」
25:25 ところが第七の月に、王族の一人、エリシャマの孫でネタンヤの子であるイシュマエルが、十人の部下を率いて来てゲダルヤを打ち殺した。彼と共にミツパにいたユダの人々もカルデア人も打ち殺された。
25:26 民は皆、上の者から下の者まで、また軍の長たちも、カルデア人を恐れて、直ちにエジプトに出発した。
◆ヨヤキンの解放
25:27 ユダの王ヨヤキンが捕囚となって三十七年目の第十二の月の二十七日に、バビロンの王エビル・メロダクは、その即位の年にユダの王ヨヤキンに情けをかけ、彼を出獄させた。
25:28 バビロンの王は彼を手厚くもてなし、バビロンで共にいた王たちの中で彼に最も高い位を与えた。
25:29 ヨヤキンは獄中の衣を脱ぎ、生きている間、毎日欠かさず王と食事を共にすることとなった。
25:30 彼は生きている間、毎日、日々の糧を常に王から支給された。
1:1 Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.
1:2 Now Ahaziah fell through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria, and was injured; so he sent messengers and said to them, "Go, inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this injury."
1:3 But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, "Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them, 'Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?'
1:4 "Now therefore, thus says the Lord: 'You shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.' " So Elijah departed.
1:5 And when the messengers returned to him, he said to them, "Why have you come back?"
1:6 So they said to him, "A man came up to meet us, and said to us, 'Go, return to the king who sent you, and say to him, "Thus says the Lord: 'Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.' " ' "
1:7 Then he said to them, "What kind of man was it who came up to meet you and told you these words?"
1:8 So they answered him, "A hairy man wearing a leather belt around his waist." And he said, "It is Elijah the Tishbite."
1:9 Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty with his fifty men. So he went up to him; and there he was, sitting on the top of a hill. And he spoke to him: "Man of God, the king has said, 'Come down!' "
1:10 So Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, "If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men." And fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.
1:11 Then he sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty men. And he answered and said to him: "Man of God, thus has the king said, 'Come down quickly!' "
1:12 So Elijah answered and said to them, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men." And the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.
1:13 Again, he sent a third captain of fifty with his fifty men. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and pleaded with him, and said to him: "Man of God, please let my life and the life of these fifty servants of yours be precious in your sight.
1:14 "Look, fire has come down from heaven and burned up the first two captains of fifties with their fifties. But let my life now be precious in your sight."
1:15 And the angel of the Lord said to Elijah, "Go down with him; do not be afraid of him." So he arose and went down with him to the king.
1:16 Then he said to him, "Thus says the Lord: 'Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of His word? Therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.' "
1:17 So Ahaziah died according to the word of the Lord which Elijah had spoken. Because he had no son, Jehoram became king in his place, in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah.
1:18 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

2:1 And it came to pass, when the Lord was about to take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.
2:2 Then Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me on to Bethel." But Elisha said, "As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!" So they went down to Bethel.
2:3 Now the sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you know that the Lord will take away your master from over you today?" And he said, "Yes, I know; keep silent!"
2:4 Then Elijah said to him, "Elisha, stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me on to Jericho." But he said, "As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!" So they came to Jericho.
2:5 Now the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho came to Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that the Lord will take away your master from over you today?" So he answered, "Yes, I know; keep silent!"
2:6 Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me on to the Jordan." But he said, "As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!" So the two of them went on.
2:7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood facing them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan.
2:8 Now Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water; and it was divided this way and that, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.
2:9 And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?" Elisha said, "Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me."
2:10 So he said, "You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so."
2:11 Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
2:12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, "My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!" So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces.
2:13 He also took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan.
2:14 Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, "Where is the Lord God of Elijah?" And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over.
2:15 Now when the sons of the prophets who were from Jericho saw him, they said, "The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha." And they came to meet him, and bowed to the ground before him.
2:16 Then they said to him, "Look now, there are fifty strong men with your servants. Please let them go and search for your master, lest perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has taken him up and cast him upon some mountain or into some valley." And he said, "You shall not send anyone."
2:17 But when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, "Send them!" Therefore they sent fifty men, and they searched for three days but did not find him.
2:18 And when they came back to him, for he had stayed in Jericho, he said to them, "Did I not say to you, 'Do not go'?"
2:19 Then the men of the city said to Elisha, "Please notice, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees; but the water is bad, and the ground barren."
2:20 And he said, "Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it." So they brought it to him.
2:21 Then he went out to the source of the water, and cast in the salt there, and said, "Thus says the Lord: 'I have healed this water; from it there shall be no more death or barrenness.' "
2:22 So the water remains healed to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke.
2:23 Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, "Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!"
2:24 So he turned around and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the Lord. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.
2:25 Then he went from there to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.

3:1 Now Jehoram the son of Ahab became king over Israel at Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.
3:2 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, but not like his father and mother; for he put away the sacred pillar of Baal that his father had made.
3:3 Nevertheless he persisted in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin; he did not depart from them.
3:4 Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheepbreeder, and he regularly paid the king of Israel one hundred thousand lambs and the wool of one hundred thousand rams.
3:5 But it happened, when Ahab died, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
3:6 So King Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time and mustered all Israel.
3:7 Then he went and sent to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, "The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight against Moab?" And he said, "I will go up; I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses."
3:8 Then he said, "Which way shall we go up?" And he answered, "By way of the Wilderness of Edom."
3:9 So the king of Israel went with the king of Judah and the king of Edom, and they marched on that roundabout route seven days; and there was no water for the army, nor for the animals that followed them.
3:10 And the king of Israel said, "Alas! For the Lord has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab."
3:11 But Jehoshaphat said, "Is there no prophet of the Lord here, that we may inquire of the Lord by him?" So one of the servants of the king of Israel answered and said, "Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah."
3:12 And Jehoshaphat said, "The word of the Lord is with him." So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
3:13 Then Elisha said to the king of Israel, "What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother." But the king of Israel said to him, "No, for the Lord has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab."
3:14 And Elisha said, "As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, surely were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not look at you, nor see you.
3:15 "But now bring me a musician." Then it happened, when the musician played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him.
3:16 And he said, "Thus says the Lord: 'Make this valley full of ditches.'
3:17 "For thus says the Lord: 'You shall not see wind, nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, so that you, your cattle, and your animals may drink.'
3:18 "And this is a simple matter in the sight of the Lord; He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.
3:19 "Also you shall attack every fortified city and every choice city, and shall cut down every good tree, and stop up every spring of water, and ruin every good piece of land with stones."
3:20 Now it happened in the morning, when the grain offering was offered, that suddenly water came by way of Edom, and the land was filled with water.
3:21 And when all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, all who were able to bear arms and older were gathered; and they stood at the border.
3:22 Then they rose up early in the morning, and the sun was shining on the water; and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood.
3:23 And they said, "This is blood; the kings have surely struck swords and have killed one another; now therefore, Moab, to the spoil!"
3:24 So when they came to the camp of Israel, Israel rose up and attacked the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they entered their land, killing the Moabites.
3:25 Then they destroyed the cities, and each man threw a stone on every good piece of land and filled it; and they stopped up all the springs of water and cut down all the good trees. But they left the stones of Kir Haraseth intact. However the slingers surrounded and attacked it.
3:26 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too fierce for him, he took with him seven hundred men who drew swords, to break through to the king of Edom, but they could not.
3:27 Then he took his eldest son who would have reigned in his place, and offered him as a burnt offering upon the wall; and there was great indignation against Israel. So they departed from him and returned to their own land.

4:1 A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, "Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves."
4:2 So Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?" And she said, "Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil."
4:3 Then he said, "Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors-empty vessels; do not gather just a few.
4:4 "And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones."
4:5 So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out.
4:6 Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, "Bring me another vessel." And he said to her, "There is not another vessel." So the oil ceased.
4:7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest."
4:8 Now it happened one day that Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a notable woman, and she persuaded him to eat some food. So it was, as often as he passed by, he would turn in there to eat some food.
4:9 And she said to her husband, "Look now, I know that this is a holy man of God, who passes by us regularly.
4:10 "Please, let us make a small upper room on the wall; and let us put a bed for him there, and a table and a chair and a lampstand; so it will be, whenever he comes to us, he can turn in there."
4:11 And it happened one day that he came there, and he turned in to the upper room and lay down there.
4:12 Then he said to Gehazi his servant, "Call this Shunammite woman." When he had called her, she stood before him.
4:13 And he said to him, "Say now to her, 'Look, you have been concerned for us with all this care. What can I do for you? Do you want me to speak on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?' " She answered, "I dwell among my own people."
4:14 So he said, "What then is to be done for her?" And Gehazi answered, "Actually, she has no son, and her husband is old."
4:15 So he said, "Call her." When he had called her, she stood in the doorway.
4:16 Then he said, "About this time next year you shall embrace a son." And she said, "No, my lord. Man of God, do not lie to your maidservant!"
4:17 But the woman conceived, and bore a son when the appointed time had come, of which Elisha had told her.
4:18 And the child grew. Now it happened one day that he went out to his father, to the reapers.
4:19 And he said to his father, "My head, my head!" So he said to a servant, "Carry him to his mother."
4:20 When he had taken him and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died.
4:21 And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, shut the door upon him, and went out.
4:22 Then she called to her husband, and said, "Please send me one of the young men and one of the donkeys, that I may run to the man of God and come back."
4:23 So he said, "Why are you going to him today? It is neither the New Moon nor the Sabbath." And she said, "It is well."
4:24 Then she saddled a donkey, and said to her servant, "Drive, and go forward; do not slacken the pace for me unless I tell you."
4:25 And so she departed, and went to the man of God at Mount Carmel. So it was, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to his servant Gehazi, "Look, the Shunammite woman!.
4:26 "Please run now to meet her, and say to her, 'Is it well with you? Is it well with your husband? Is it well with the child?' " And she answered, "It is well."
4:27 Now when she came to the man of God at the hill, she caught him by the feet, but Gehazi came near to push her away. But the man of God said, "Let her alone; for her soul is in deep distress, and the Lord has hidden it from me, and has not told me."
4:28 So she said, "Did I ask a son of my lord? Did I not say, 'Do not deceive me'?"
4:29 Then he said to Gehazi, "Get yourself ready, and take my staff in your hand, and be on your way. If you meet anyone, do not greet him; and if anyone greets you, do not answer him; but lay my staff on the face of the child."
4:30 And the mother of the child said, "As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you." So he arose and followed her.
4:31 Now Gehazi went on ahead of them, and laid the staff on the face of the child; but there was neither voice nor hearing. Therefore he went back to meet him, and told him, saying, "The child has not awakened."
4:32 When Elisha came into the house, there was the child, lying dead on his bed.
4:33 He went in therefore, shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the Lord.
4:34 And he went up and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands; and he stretched himself out on the child, and the flesh of the child became warm.
4:35 He returned and walked back and forth in the house, and again went up and stretched himself out on him; then the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.
4:36 And he called Gehazi and said, "Call this Shunammite woman." So he called her. And when she came in to him, he said, "Pick up your son."
4:37 So she went in, fell at his feet, and bowed to the ground; then she picked up her son and went out.
4:38 And Elisha returned to Gilgal, and there was a famine in the land. Now the sons of the prophets were sitting before him; and he said to his servant, "Put on the large pot, and boil stew for the sons of the prophets."
4:39 So one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered from it a lapful of wild gourds, and came and sliced them into the pot of stew, though they did not know what they were.
4:40 Then they served it to the men to eat. Now it happened, as they were eating the stew, that they cried out and said, "Man of God, there is death in the pot!" And they could not eat it.
4:41 So he said, "Then bring some flour." And he put it into the pot, and said, "Serve it to the people, that they may eat." And there was nothing harmful in the pot.
4:42 Then a man came from Baal Shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley bread, and newly ripened grain in his knapsack. And he said, "Give it to the people, that they may eat."
4:43 But his servant said, "What? Shall I set this before one hundred men?" He said again, "Give it to the people, that they may eat; for thus says the Lord: 'They shall eat and have some left over.' "
4:44 So he set it before them; and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.

5:1 Now Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria, was a great and honorable man in the eyes of his master, because by him the Lord had given victory to Syria. He was also a mighty man of valor, but a leper.
5:2 And the Syrians had gone out on raids, and had brought back captive a young girl from the land of Israel. She waited on Naaman's wife.
5:3 Then she said to her mistress, "If only my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria! For he would heal him of his leprosy."
5:4 And Naaman went in and told his master, saying, "Thus and thus said the girl who is from the land of Israel."
5:5 Then the king of Syria said, "Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel." So he departed and took with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten changes of clothing.
5:6 Then he brought the letter to the king of Israel, which said, Now be advised, when this letter comes to you, that I have sent Naaman my servant to you, that you may heal him of his leprosy.
5:7 And it happened, when the king of Israel read the letter, that he tore his clothes and said, "Am I God, to kill and make alive, that this man sends a man to me to heal him of his leprosy? Therefore please consider, and see how he seeks a quarrel with me."
5:8 So it was, when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, "Why have you torn your clothes? Please let him come to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel."
5:9 Then Naaman went with his horses and chariot, and he stood at the door of Elisha's house.
5:10 And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, "Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored to you, and you shall be clean."
5:11 But Naaman became furious, and went away and said, "Indeed, I said to myself, 'He will surely come out to me, and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the place, and heal the leprosy.'
5:12 "Are not the Abanah and the Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?" So he turned and went away in a rage.
5:13 And his servants came near and spoke to him, and said, "My father, if the prophet had told you to do something great, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he says to you, 'Wash, and be clean'?"
5:14 So he went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
5:15 And he returned to the man of God, he and all his aides, and came and stood before him; and he said, "Indeed, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel; now therefore, please take a gift from your servant."
5:16 But he said, "As the Lord lives, before whom I stand, I will receive nothing." And he urged him to take it, but he refused.
5:17 So Naaman said, "Then, if not, please let your servant be given two mule-loads of earth; for your servant will no longer offer either burnt offering or sacrifice to other gods, but to the Lord.
5:18 "Yet in this thing may the Lord pardon your servant: when my master goes into the temple of Rimmon to worship there, and he leans on my hand, and I bow down in the temple of Rimmon-when I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord please pardon your servant in this thing."
5:19 Then he said to him, "Go in peace." So he departed from him a short distance.
5:20 But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, "Look, my master has spared Naaman this Syrian, while not receiving from his hands what he brought; but as the Lord lives, I will run after him and take something from him."
5:21 So Gehazi pursued Naaman. When Naaman saw him running after him, he got down from the chariot to meet him, and said, "Is all well?"
5:22 And he said, "All is well. My master has sent me, saying, 'Indeed, just now two young men of the sons of the prophets have come to me from the mountains of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two changes of garments.' "
5:23 So Naaman said, "Please, take two talents." And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and handed them to two of his servants; and they carried them on ahead of him.
5:24 When he came to the citadel, he took them from their hand, and stored them away in the house; then he let the men go, and they departed.
5:25 Now he went in and stood before his master. Elisha said to him, "Where did you go, Gehazi?" And he said, "Your servant did not go anywhere."
5:26 Then he said to him, "Did not my heart go with you when the man turned back from his chariot to meet you? Is it time to receive money and to receive clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male and female servants?
5:27 "Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and your descendants forever." And he went out from his presence leprous, as white as snow.

6:1 And the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, "See now, the place where we dwell with you is too small for us.
6:2 "Please, let us go to the Jordan, and let every man take a beam from there, and let us make there a place where we may dwell." So he answered, "Go."
6:3 Then one said, "Please consent to go with your servants." And he answered, "I will go."
6:4 So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees.
6:5 But as one was cutting down a tree, the iron ax head fell into the water; and he cried out and said, "Alas, master! For it was borrowed."
6:6 So the man of God said, "Where did it fall?" And he showed him the place. So he cut off a stick, and threw it in there; and he made the iron float.
6:7 Therefore he said, "Pick it up for yourself." So he reached out his hand and took it.
6:8 Now the king of Syria was making war against Israel; and he consulted with his servants, saying, "My camp will be in such and such a place."
6:9 And the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, "Beware that you do not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there."
6:10 Then the king of Israel sent someone to the place of which the man of God had told him. Thus he warned him, and he was watchful there, not just once or twice.
6:11 Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was greatly troubled by this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, "Will you not show me which of us is for the king of Israel?"
6:12 And one of his servants said, "None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom."
6:13 So he said, "Go and see where he is, that I may send and get him." And it was told him, saying, "Surely he is in Dothan."
6:14 Therefore he sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city.
6:15 And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, "Alas, my master! What shall we do?"
6:16 So he answered, "Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them."
6:17 And Elisha prayed, and said, "Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see." Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
6:18 So when the Syrians came down to him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, and said, "Strike this people, I pray, with blindness." And He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.
6:19 Now Elisha said to them, "This is not the way, nor is this the city. Follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek." But he led them to Samaria.
6:20 So it was, when they had come to Samaria, that Elisha said, "Lord, open the eyes of these men, that they may see." And the Lord opened their eyes, and they saw; and there they were, inside Samaria!
6:21 Now when the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, "My father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?"
6:22 But he answered, "You shall not kill them. Would you kill those whom you have taken captive with your sword and your bow? Set food and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master."
6:23 Then he prepared a great feast for them; and after they ate and drank, he sent them away and they went to their master. So the bands of Syrian raiders came no more into the land of Israel.
6:24 And it happened after this that Ben-Hadad king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria.
6:25 And there was a great famine in Samaria; and indeed they besieged it until a donkey's head was sold for eighty shekels of silver, and one-fourth of a kab of dove droppings for five shekels of silver.
6:26 Then, as the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried out to him, saying, "Help, my lord, O king!"
6:27 And he said, "If the Lord does not help you, where can I find help for you? From the threshing floor or from the winepress?"
6:28 Then the king said to her, "What is troubling you?" And she answered, "This woman said to me, 'Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.'
6:29 "So we boiled my son, and ate him. And I said to her on the next day, 'Give your son, that we may eat him'; but she has hidden her son."
6:30 Now it happened, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he tore his clothes; and as he passed by on the wall, the people looked, and there underneath he had sackcloth on his body.
6:31 Then he said, "God do so to me and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat remains on him today."
6:32 But Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. And the king sent a man ahead of him, but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, "Do you see how this son of a murderer has sent someone to take away my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door. Is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?"
6:33 And while he was still talking with them, there was the messenger, coming down to him; and then the king said, "Surely this calamity is from the Lord; why should I wait for the Lord any longer?"

7:1 Then Elisha said, "Hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord: 'Tomorrow about this time a seah of fine flour shall be sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.' "
7:2 So an officer on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God and said, "Look, if the Lord would make windows in heaven, could this thing be?" And he said, "In fact, you shall see it with your eyes, but you shall not eat of it."
7:3 Now there were four leprous men at the entrance of the gate; and they said to one another, "Why are we sitting here until we die?
7:4 "If we say, 'We will enter the city,' the famine is in the city, and we shall die there. And if we sit here, we die also. Now therefore, come, let us surrender to the army of the Syrians. If they keep us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall only die."
7:5 And they rose at twilight to go to the camp of the Syrians; and when they had come to the outskirts of the Syrian camp, to their surprise no one was there.
7:6 For the Lord had caused the army of the Syrians to hear the noise of chariots and the noise of horses-the noise of a great army; so they said to one another, "Look, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to attack us!"
7:7 Therefore they arose and fled at twilight, and left the camp intact-their tents, their horses, and their donkeys-and they fled for their lives.
7:8 And when these lepers came to the outskirts of the camp, they went into one tent and ate and drank, and carried from it silver and gold and clothing, and went and hid them; then they came back and entered another tent, and carried some from there also, and went and hid it.
7:9 Then they said to one another, "We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, and we remain silent. If we wait until morning light, some punishment will come upon us. Now therefore, come, let us go and tell the king's household."
7:10 So they went and called to the gatekeepers of the city, and told them, saying, "We went to the Syrian camp, and surprisingly no one was there, not a human sound-only horses and donkeys tied, and the tents intact."
7:11 And the gatekeepers called out, and they told it to the king's household inside.
7:12 So the king arose in the night and said to his servants, "Let me now tell you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we are hungry; therefore they have gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, 'When they come out of the city, we shall catch them alive, and get into the city.' "
7:13 And one of his servants answered and said, "Please, let several men take five of the remaining horses which are left in the city. Look, they may either become like all the multitude of Israel that are left in it; or indeed, I say, they may become like all the multitude of Israel left from those who are consumed; so let us send them and see."
7:14 Therefore they took two chariots with horses; and the king sent them in the direction of the Syrian army, saying, "Go and see."
7:15 And they went after them to the Jordan; and indeed all the road was full of garments and weapons which the Syrians had thrown away in their haste. So the messengers returned and told the king.
7:16 Then the people went out and plundered the tents of the Syrians. So a seah of fine flour was sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, according to the word of the Lord.
7:17 Now the king had appointed the officer on whose hand he leaned to have charge of the gate. But the people trampled him in the gate, and he died, just as the man of God had said, who spoke when the king came down to him.
7:18 So it happened just as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, "Two seahs of barley for a shekel, and a seah of fine flour for a shekel, shall be sold tomorrow about this time in the gate of Samaria."
7:19 Then that officer had answered the man of God, and said, "Now look, if the Lord would make windows in heaven, could such a thing be?" And he had said, "In fact, you shall see it with your eyes, but you shall not eat of it."
7:20 And so it happened to him, for the people trampled him in the gate, and he died.

8:1 Then Elisha spoke to the woman whose son he had restored to life, saying, "Arise and go, you and your household, and stay wherever you can; for the Lord has called for a famine, and furthermore, it will come upon the land for seven years."
8:2 So the woman arose and did according to the saying of the man of God, and she went with her household and dwelt in the land of the Philistines seven years.
8:3 It came to pass, at the end of seven years, that the woman returned from the land of the Philistines; and she went to make an appeal to the king for her house and for her land.
8:4 Then the king talked with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, "Tell me, please, all the great things Elisha has done."
8:5 Now it happened, as he was telling the king how he had restored the dead to life, that there was the woman whose son he had restored to life, appealing to the king for her house and for her land. And Gehazi said, "My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life."
8:6 And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed a certain officer for her, saying, "Restore all that was hers, and all the proceeds of the field from the day that she left the land until now."
8:7 Then Elisha went to Damascus, and Ben-Hadad king of Syria was sick; and it was told him, saying, "The man of God has come here."
8:8 And the king said to Hazael, "Take a present in your hand, and go to meet the man of God, and inquire of the Lord by him, saying, 'Shall I recover from this disease?' "
8:9 So Hazael went to meet him and took a present with him, of every good thing of Damascus, forty camel-loads; and he came and stood before him, and said, "Your son Ben-Hadad king of Syria has sent me to you, saying, 'Shall I recover from this disease?' "
8:10 And Elisha said to him, "Go, say to him, 'You shall certainly recover.' However the Lord has shown me that he will really die."
8:11 Then he set his countenance in a stare until he was ashamed; and the man of God wept.
8:12 And Hazael said, "Why is my lord weeping?" He answered, "Because I know the evil that you will do to the children of Israel: Their strongholds you will set on fire, and their young men you will kill with the sword; and you will dash their children, and rip open their women with child."
8:13 So Hazael said, "But what is your servant-a dog, that he should do this gross thing?" And Elisha answered, "The Lord has shown me that you will become king over Syria."
8:14 Then he departed from Elisha, and came to his master, who said to him, "What did Elisha say to you?" And he answered, "He told me you would surely recover."
8:15 But it happened on the next day that he took a thick cloth and dipped it in water, and spread it over his face so that he died; and Hazael reigned in his place.
8:16 Now in the fifth year of Joram the son of Ahab, king of Israel, Jehoshaphat having been king of Judah, Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat began to reign as king of Judah.
8:17 He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.
8:18 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife; and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.
8:19 Yet the Lord would not destroy Judah, for the sake of his servant David, as He promised him to give a lamp to him and his sons forever.
8:20 In his days Edom revolted against Judah's authority, and made a king over themselves.
8:21 So Joram went to Zair, and all his chariots with him. Then he rose by night and attacked the Edomites who had surrounded him and the captains of the chariots; and the troops fled to their tents.
8:22 Thus Edom has been in revolt against Judah's authority to this day. And Libnah revolted at that time.
8:23 Now the rest of the acts of Joram, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
8:24 So Joram rested with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the City of David. Then Ahaziah his son reigned in his place.
8:25 In the twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab, king of Israel, Ahaziah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, began to reign.
8:26 Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Athaliah the granddaughter of Omri, king of Israel.
8:27 And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab, and did evil in the sight of the Lord, like the house of Ahab, for he was the son-in-law of the house of Ahab.
8:28 Now he went with Joram the son of Ahab to war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramoth Gilead; and the Syrians wounded Joram.
8:29 Then King Joram went back to Jezreel to recover from the wounds which the Syrians had inflicted on him at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. And Ahaziah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.

9:1 And Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets, and said to him, "Get yourself ready, take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth Gilead.
9:2 "Now when you arrive at that place, look there for Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, and go in and make him rise up from among his associates, and take him to an inner room.
9:3 "Then take the flask of oil, and pour it on his head, and say, 'Thus says the Lord: "I have anointed you king over Israel." ' Then open the door and flee, and do not delay."
9:4 So the young man, the servant of the prophet, went to Ramoth Gilead.
9:5 And when he arrived, there were the captains of the army sitting; and he said, "I have a message for you, Commander." Jehu said, "For which one of us?" And he said, "For you, Commander."
9:6 Then he arose and went into the house. And he poured the oil on his head, and said to him, "Thus says the Lord God of Israel: 'I have anointed you king over the people of the Lord, over Israel.
9:7 'You shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, that I may avenge the blood of My servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, at the hand of Jezebel.
9:8 'For the whole house of Ahab shall perish; and I will cut off from Ahab all the males in Israel, both bond and free.
9:9 'So I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah.
9:10 'The dogs shall eat Jezebel on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and there shall be none to bury her.' " And he opened the door and fled.
9:11 Then Jehu came out to the servants of his master, and one said to him, "Is all well? Why did this madman come to you?" And he said to them, "You know the man and his babble."
9:12 And they said, "A lie! Tell us now." So he said, "Thus and thus he spoke to me, saying, 'Thus says the Lord: "I have anointed you king over Israel." ' "
9:13 Then each man hastened to take his garment and put it under him on the top of the steps; and they blew trumpets, saying, "Jehu is king!"
9:14 So Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, conspired against Joram. (Now Joram had been defending Ramoth Gilead, he and all Israel, against Hazael king of Syria.
9:15 But King Joram had returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds which the Syrians had inflicted on him when he fought with Hazael king of Syria.) And Jehu said, "If you are so minded, let no one leave or escape from the city to go and tell it in Jezreel."
9:16 So Jehu rode in a chariot and went to Jezreel, for Joram was laid up there; and Ahaziah king of Judah had come down to see Joram.
9:17 Now a watchman stood on the tower in Jezreel, and he saw the company of Jehu as he came, and said, "I see a company of men." And Joram said, "Get a horseman and send him to meet them, and let him say, 'Is it peace?' "
9:18 So the horseman went to meet him, and said, "Thus says the king: 'Is it peace?' " And Jehu said, "What have you to do with peace? Turn around and follow me." So the watchman reported, saying, "The messenger went to them, but is not coming back."
9:19 Then he sent out a second horseman who came to them, and said, "Thus says the king: 'Is it peace?' " And Jehu answered, "What have you to do with peace? Turn around and follow me."
9:20 So the watchman reported, saying, "He went up to them and is not coming back; and the driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi, for he drives furiously!"
9:21 Then Joram said, "Make ready." And his chariot was made ready. Then Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out, each in his chariot; and they went out to meet Jehu, and met him on the property of Naboth the Jezreelite.
9:22 Now it happened, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, "Is it peace, Jehu?" So he answered, "What peace, as long as the harlotries of your mother Jezebel and her witchcraft are so many?"
9:23 Then Joram turned around and fled, and said to Ahaziah, "Treachery, Ahaziah!"
9:24 Now Jehu drew his bow with full strength and shot Jehoram between his arms; and the arrow came out at his heart, and he sank down in his chariot.
9:25 Then Jehu said to Bidkar his captain, "Pick him up, and throw him into the tract of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite; for remember, when you and I were riding together behind Ahab his father, that the Lord laid this burden upon him:
9:26 'Surely I saw yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons,' says the Lord, 'and I will repay you in this plot,' says the Lord. Now therefore, take and throw him on the plot of ground, according to the word of the Lord."
9:27 But when Ahaziah king of Judah saw this, he fled by the road to Beth Haggan. So Jehu pursued him, and said, "Shoot him also in the chariot." And they shot him at the Ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam. Then he fled to Megiddo, and died there.
9:28 And his servants carried him in the chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his tomb with his fathers in the City of David.
9:29 In the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab, Ahaziah had become king over Judah.
9:30 Now when Jehu had come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she put paint on her eyes and adorned her head, and looked through a window.
9:31 Then, as Jehu entered at the gate, she said, "Is it peace, Zimri, murderer of your master?"
9:32 And he looked up at the window, and said, "Who is on my side? Who?" So two or three eunuchs looked out at him.
9:33 Then he said, "Throw her down." So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses; and he trampled her underfoot.
9:34 And when he had gone in, he ate and drank. Then he said, "Go now, see to this accursed woman, and bury her, for she was a king's daughter."
9:35 So they went to bury her, but they found no more of her than the skull and the feet and the palms of her hands.
9:36 Therefore they came back and told him. And he said, "This is the word of the Lord, which He spoke by His servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 'On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel;
9:37 'and the corpse of Jezebel shall be as refuse on the surface of the field, in the plot at Jezreel, so that they shall not say, "Here lies Jezebel." ' "

10:1 Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote and sent letters to Samaria, to the rulers of Jezreel, to the elders, and to those who reared Ahab's sons, saying:
10:2 Now as soon as this letter comes to you, since your master's sons are with you, and you have chariots and horses, a fortified city also, and weapons,
10:3 choose the best qualified of your master's sons, set him on his father's throne, and fight for your master's house.
10:4 But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, "Look, two kings could not stand up to him; how then can we stand?"
10:5 And he who was in charge of the house, and he who was in charge of the city, the elders also, and those who reared the sons, sent to Jehu, saying, "We are your servants, we will do all you tell us; but we will not make anyone king. Do what is good in your sight."
10:6 Then he wrote a second letter to them, saying: If you are for me and will obey my voice, take the heads of the men, your master's sons, and come to me at Jezreel by this time tomorrow. Now the king's sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who were rearing them.
10:7 So it was, when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons and slaughtered seventy persons, put their heads in baskets and sent them to him at Jezreel.
10:8 Then a messenger came and told him, saying, "They have brought the heads of the king's sons." And he said, "Lay them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning."
10:9 So it was, in the morning, that he went out and stood, and said to all the people, "You are righteous. Indeed I conspired against my master and killed him; but who killed all these?
10:10 "Know now that nothing shall fall to the earth of the word of the Lord which the Lord spoke concerning the house of Ahab; for the Lord has done what He spoke by His servant Elijah."
10:11 So Jehu killed all who remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men and his close acquaintances and his priests, until he left him none remaining.
10:12 And he arose and departed and went to Samaria. On the way, at Beth Eked of the Shepherds,
10:13 Jehu met with the brothers of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, "Who are you?" So they answered, "We are the brothers of Ahaziah; we have come down to greet the sons of the king and the sons of the queen mother."
10:14 And he said, "Take them alive!" So they took them alive, and killed them at the well of Beth Eked, forty-two men; and he left none of them.
10:15 Now when he departed from there, he met Jehonadab the son of Rechab, coming to meet him; and he greeted him and said to him, "Is your heart right, as my heart is toward your heart?" And Jehonadab answered, "It is." Jehu said, "If it is, give me your hand." So he gave him his hand, and he took him up to him into the chariot.
10:16 Then he said, "Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord." So they had him ride in his chariot.
10:17 And when he came to Samaria, he killed all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed them, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke to Elijah.
10:18 Then Jehu gathered all the people together, and said to them, "Ahab served Baal a little, Jehu will serve him much.
10:19 "Now therefore, call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests. Let no one be missing, for I have a great sacrifice for Baal. Whoever is missing shall not live." But Jehu acted deceptively, with the intent of destroying the worshipers of Baal.
10:20 And Jehu said, "Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal." So they proclaimed it.
10:21 Then Jehu sent throughout all Israel; and all the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left who did not come. So they came into the temple of Baal, and the temple of Baal was full from one end to the other.
10:22 And he said to the one in charge of the wardrobe, "Bring out vestments for all the worshipers of Baal." So he brought out vestments for them.
10:23 Then Jehu and Jehonadab the son of Rechab went into the temple of Baal, and said to the worshipers of Baal, "Search and see that no servants of the Lord are here with you, but only the worshipers of Baal."
10:24 So they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had appointed for himself eighty men on the outside, and had said, "If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escapes, whoever lets him escape, it shall be his life for the life of the other."
10:25 Now it happened, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, "Go in and kill them; let no one come out!" And they killed them with the edge of the sword; then the guards and the officers threw them out, and went into the inner room of the temple of Baal.
10:26 And they brought the sacred pillars out of the temple of Baal and burned them.
10:27 Then they broke down the sacred pillar of Baal, and tore down the temple of Baal and made it a refuse dump to this day.
10:28 Thus Jehu destroyed Baal from Israel.
10:29 However Jehu did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin, that is, from the golden calves that were at Bethel and Dan.
10:30 And the Lord said to Jehu, "Because you have done well in doing what is right in My sight, and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in My heart, your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation."
10:31 But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart; for he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam, who had made Israel sin.
10:32 In those days the Lord began to cut off parts of Israel; and Hazael conquered them in all the territory of Israel
10:33 from the Jordan eastward: all the land of Gilead-Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh-from Aroer, which is by the River Arnon, including Gilead and Bashan.
10:34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
10:35 So Jehu rested with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. Then Jehoahaz his son reigned in his place.
10:36 And the period that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.

11:1 When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal heirs.
11:2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king's sons who were being murdered; and they hid him and his nurse in the bedroom, from Athaliah, so that he was not killed.
11:3 So he was hidden with her in the house of the Lord for six years, while Athaliah reigned over the land.
11:4 In the seventh year Jehoiada sent and brought the captains of hundreds-of the bodyguards and the escorts-and brought them into the house of the Lord to him. And he made a covenant with them and took an oath from them in the house of the Lord, and showed them the king's son.
11:5 Then he commanded them, saying, "This is what you shall do: One-third of you who come on duty on the Sabbath shall be keeping watch over the king's house,
11:6 "one-third shall be at the gate of Sur, and one-third at the gate behind the escorts. You shall keep the watch of the house, lest it be broken down.
11:7 "The two contingents of you who go off duty on the Sabbath shall keep the watch of the house of the Lord for the king.
11:8 "But you shall surround the king on all sides, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whoever comes within range, let him be put to death. You are to be with the king as he goes out and as he comes in."
11:9 So the captains of the hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. Each of them took his men who were to be on duty on the Sabbath, with those who were going off duty on the Sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.
11:10 And the priest gave the captains of hundreds the spears and shields which had belonged to King David, that were in the temple of the Lord.
11:11 Then the escorts stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, all around the king, from the right side of the temple to the left side of the temple, by the altar and the house.
11:12 And he brought out the king's son, put the crown on him, and gave him the Testimony; they made him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, "Long live the king!"
11:13 Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the escorts and the people, she came to the people in the temple of the Lord.
11:14 When she looked, there was the king standing by a pillar according to custom; and the leaders and the trumpeters were by the king. All the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. So Athaliah tore her clothes and cried out, "Treason! Treason!"
11:15 And Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the army, and said to them, "Take her outside under guard, and slay with the sword whoever follows her." For the priest had said, "Do not let her be killed in the house of the Lord."
11:16 So they seized her; and she went by way of the horses' entrance into the king's house, and there she was killed.
11:17 Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people, that they should be the Lord's people, and also between the king and the people.
11:18 And all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal, and tore it down. They thoroughly broke in pieces its altars and images, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of the Lord.
11:19 Then he took the captains of hundreds, the bodyguards, the escorts, and all the people of the land; and they brought the king down from the house of the Lord, and went by way of the gate of the escorts to the king's house. Then he sat on the throne of the kings.
11:20 So all the people of the land rejoiced; and the city was quiet, for they had slain Athaliah with the sword in the king's house.
11:21 Jehoash was seven years old when he became king.

12:1 In the seventh year of Jehu, Jehoash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba.
12:2 Jehoash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him.
12:3 But the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.
12:4 And Jehoash said to the priests, "All the money of the dedicated gifts that are brought into the house of the Lord-each man's census money, each man's assessment money-and all the money that a man purposes in his heart to bring into the house of the Lord,
12:5 "let the priests take it themselves, each from his constituency; and let them repair the damages of the temple, wherever any dilapidation is found."
12:6 Now it was so, by the twenty-third year of King Jehoash, that the priests had not repaired the damages of the temple.
12:7 So King Jehoash called Jehoiada the priest and the other priests, and said to them, "Why have you not repaired the damages of the temple? Now therefore, do not take more money from your constituency, but deliver it for repairing the damages of the temple."
12:8 And the priests agreed that they would neither receive more money from the people, nor repair the damages of the temple.
12:9 Then Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole in its lid, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one comes into the house of the Lord; and the priests who kept the door put there all the money brought into the house of the Lord.
12:10 So it was, whenever they saw that there was much money in the chest, that the king's scribe and the high priest came up and put it in bags, and counted the money that was found in the house of the Lord.
12:11 Then they gave the money, which had been apportioned, into the hands of those who did the work, who had the oversight of the house of the Lord; and they paid it out to the carpenters and builders who worked on the house of the Lord,
12:12 and to masons and stonecutters, and for buying timber and hewn stone, to repair the damage of the house of the Lord, and for all that was paid out to repair the temple.
12:13 However there were not made for the house of the Lord basins of silver, trimmers, sprinkling-bowls, trumpets, any articles of gold or articles of silver, from the money brought into the house of the Lord.
12:14 But they gave that to the workmen, and they repaired the house of the Lord with it.
12:15 Moreover they did not require an account from the men into whose hand they delivered the money to be paid to workmen, for they dealt faithfully.
12:16 The money from the trespass offerings and the money from the sin offerings was not brought into the house of the Lord. It belonged to the priests.
12:17 Hazael king of Syria went up and fought against Gath, and took it; then Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem.
12:18 And Jehoash king of Judah took all the sacred things that his fathers, Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own sacred things, and all the gold found in the treasuries of the house of the Lord and in the king's house, and sent them to Hazael king of Syria. Then he went away from Jerusalem.

12:20 And his servants arose and formed a conspiracy, and killed Joash in the house of the Millo, which goes down to Silla.
12:21 For Jozachar the son of Shimeath and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, struck him. So he died, and they buried him with his fathers in the City of David. Then Amaziah his son reigned in his place.

13:1 In the twenty-third year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu became king over Israel in Samaria, and reigned seventeen years.
13:2 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin. He did not depart from them.
13:3 Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel, and He delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Ben-Hadad the son of Hazael, all their days.
13:4 So Jehoahaz pleaded with the Lord, and the Lord listened to him; for He saw the oppression of Israel, because the king of Syria oppressed them.
13:5 Then the Lord gave Israel a deliverer, so that they escaped from under the hand of the Syrians; and the children of Israel dwelt in their tents as before.
13:6 Nevertheless they did not depart from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, who had made Israel sin, but walked in them; and the wooden image also remained in Samaria.
13:7 For He left of the army of Jehoahaz only fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand foot soldiers; for the king of Syria had destroyed them and made them like the dust at threshing.

13:9 So Jehoahaz rested with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. Then Joash his son reigned in his place.
13:10 In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz became king over Israel in Samaria, and reigned sixteen years.
13:11 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel sin, but walked in them.
13:12 Now the rest of the acts of Joash, all that he did, and his might with which he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
13:13 So Joash rested with his fathers. Then Jeroboam sat on his throne. And Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
13:14 Elisha had become sick with the illness of which he would die. Then Joash the king of Israel came down to him, and wept over his face, and said, "O my father, my father, the chariots of Israel and their horsemen!"
13:15 And Elisha said to him, "Take a bow and some arrows." So he took himself a bow and some arrows.
13:16 Then he said to the king of Israel, "Put your hand on the bow." So he put his hand on it, and Elisha put his hands on the king's hands.
13:17 And he said, "Open the east window"; and he opened it. Then Elisha said, "Shoot"; and he shot. And he said, "The arrow of the Lord's deliverance and the arrow of deliverance from Syria; for you must strike the Syrians at Aphek till you have destroyed them."
13:18 Then he said, "Take the arrows"; so he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, "Strike the ground"; so he struck three times, and stopped.
13:19 And the man of God was angry with him, and said, "You should have struck five or six times; then you would have struck Syria till you had destroyed it! But now you will strike Syria only three times."
13:20 Then Elisha died, and they buried him. And the raiding bands from Moab invaded the land in the spring of the year.
13:21 So it was, as they were burying a man, that suddenly they spied a band of raiders; and they put the man in the tomb of Elisha; and when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet.
13:22 And Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.
13:23 But the Lord was gracious to them, had compassion on them, and regarded them, because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not yet destroy them or cast them from His presence.
13:24 Now Hazael king of Syria died. Then Ben-Hadad his son reigned in his place.
13:25 And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz recaptured from the hand of Ben-Hadad, the son of Hazael, the cities which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times Joash defeated him and recaptured the cities of Israel.

14:1 In the second year of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, became king.
14:2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
14:3 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, yet not like his father David; he did everything as his father Joash had done.
14:4 However the high places were not taken away, and the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.
14:5 Now it happened, as soon as the kingdom was established in his hand, that he executed his servants who had murdered his father the king.
14:6 But the children of the murderers he did not execute, according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, in which the Lord commanded, saying, "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their fathers; but a person shall be put to death for his own sin."
14:7 He killed ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt, and took Sela by war, and called its name Joktheel to this day.
14:8 Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us face one another in battle."
14:9 And Jehoash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, "The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son as wife'; and a wild beast that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle.
14:10 "You have indeed defeated Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Glory in that, and stay at home; for why should you meddle with trouble so that you fall-you and Judah with you?"
14:11 But Amaziah would not heed. Therefore Jehoash king of Israel went out; so he and Amaziah king of Judah faced one another at Beth Shemesh, which belongs to Judah.
14:12 And Judah was defeated by Israel, and every man fled to his tent.
14:13 Then Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh; and he went to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate-four hundred cubits.
14:14 And he took all the gold and silver, all the articles that were found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king's house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria.
14:15 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did-his might, and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah-are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
14:16 So Jehoash rested with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. Then Jeroboam his son reigned in his place.
14:17 Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel.
14:18 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
14:19 And they formed a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish and killed him there.
14:20 Then they brought him on horses, and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the City of David.
14:21 And all the people of Judah took Azariah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king instead of his father Amaziah.
14:22 He built Elath and restored it to Judah, after the king rested with his fathers.
14:23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, became king in Samaria, and reigned forty-one years.
14:24 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin.
14:25 He restored the territory of Israel from the entrance of Hamath to the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the Lord God of Israel, which He had spoken through His servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet who was from Gath Hepher.
14:26 For the Lord saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter; and whether bond or free, there was no helper for Israel.
14:27 And the Lord did not say that He would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven; but He saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.
14:28 Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did-his might, how he made war, and how he recaptured for Israel, from Damascus and Hamath, what had belonged to Judah-are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
14:29 So Jeroboam rested with his fathers, the kings of Israel. Then Zechariah his son reigned in his place.

15:1 In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Azariah the son of Amaziah, king of Judah, became king.
15:2 He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem.
15:3 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father Amaziah had done,
15:4 except that the high places were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.
15:5 Then the Lord struck the king, so that he was a leper until the day of his death; so he dwelt in an isolated house. And Jotham the king's son was over the royal house, judging the people of the land.
15:6 Now the rest of the acts of Azariah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
15:7 So Azariah rested with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the City of David. Then Jotham his son reigned in his place.
15:8 In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah the son of Jeroboam reigned over Israel in Samaria six months.
15:9 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, as his fathers had done; he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin.
15:10 Then Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, and struck and killed him in front of the people; and he reigned in his place.
15:11 Now the rest of the acts of Zechariah, indeed they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
15:12 This was the word of the Lord which He spoke to Jehu, saying, "Your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation." And so it was.
15:13 Shallum the son of Jabesh became king in the thirty-ninth year of Uzziah king of Judah; and he reigned a full month in Samaria.
15:14 For Menahem the son of Gadi went up from Tirzah, came to Samaria, and struck Shallum the son of Jabesh in Samaria and killed him; and he reigned in his place.
15:15 Now the rest of the acts of Shallum, and the conspiracy which he led, indeed they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
15:16 Then from Tirzah, Menahem attacked Tiphsah, all who were there, and its territory. Because they did not surrender, therefore he attacked it. All the women there who were with child he ripped open.
15:17 In the thirty-ninth year of Azariah king of Judah, Menahem the son of Gadi became king over Israel, and reigned ten years in Samaria.
15:18 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not depart all his days from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin.
15:19 Pul king of Assyria came against the land; and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents of silver, that his hand might be with him to strengthen the kingdom under his control.
15:20 And Menahem exacted the money from Israel, from all the very wealthy, from each man fifty shekels of silver, to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria turned back, and did not stay there in the land.
15:21 Now the rest of the acts of Menahem, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
15:22 So Menahem rested with his fathers. Then Pekahiah his son reigned in his place.
15:23 In the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekahiah the son of Menahem became king over Israel in Samaria, and reigned two years.
15:24 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin.
15:25 Then Pekah the son of Remaliah, an officer of his, conspired against him and killed him in Samaria, in the citadel of the king's house, along with Argob and Arieh; and with him were fifty men of Gilead. He killed him and reigned in his place.
15:26 Now the rest of the acts of Pekahiah, and all that he did, indeed they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
15:27 In the fifty-second year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekah the son of Remaliah became king over Israel in Samaria, and reigned twenty years.
15:28 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin.
15:29 In the days of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria came and took Ijon, Abel Beth Maachah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali; and he carried them captive to Assyria.
15:30 Then Hoshea the son of Elah led a conspiracy against Pekah the son of Remaliah, and struck and killed him; so he reigned in his place in the twentieth year of Jotham the son of Uzziah.
15:31 Now the rest of the acts of Pekah, and all that he did, indeed they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
15:32 In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, Jotham the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, began to reign.
15:33 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jerusha the daughter of Zadok.
15:34 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord; he did according to all that his father Uzziah had done.
15:35 However the high places were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. He built the Upper Gate of the house of the Lord.
15:36 Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
15:37 In those days the Lord began to send Rezin king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah against Judah.
15:38 So Jotham rested with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the City of David his father. Then Ahaz his son reigned in his place.

16:1 In the seventeenth year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, Ahaz the son of Jotham, king of Judah, began to reign.
16:2 Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem; and he did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord his God, as his father David had done.
16:3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel; indeed he made his son pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord had cast out from before the children of Israel.
16:4 And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.
16:5 Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, came up to Jerusalem to make war; and they besieged Ahaz but could not overcome him.
16:6 At that time Rezin king of Syria captured Elath for Syria, and drove the men of Judah from Elath. Then the Edomites went to Elath, and dwell there to this day.
16:7 So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria, saying, "I am your servant and your son. Come up and save me from the hand of the king of Syria and from the hand of the king of Israel, who rise up against me."
16:8 And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasuries of the king's house, and sent it as a present to the king of Assyria.
16:9 So the king of Assyria heeded him; for the king of Assyria went up against Damascus and took it, carried its people captive to Kir, and killed Rezin.
16:10 Now King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria, and saw an altar that was at Damascus; and King Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the design of the altar and its pattern, according to all its workmanship.
16:11 Then Urijah the priest built an altar according to all that King Ahaz had sent from Damascus. So Urijah the priest made it before King Ahaz came back from Damascus.
16:12 And when the king came back from Damascus, the king saw the altar; and the king approached the altar and made offerings on it.
16:13 So he burned his burnt offering and his grain offering; and he poured his drink offering and sprinkled the blood of his peace offerings on the altar.
16:14 He also brought the bronze altar which was before the Lord, from the front of the temple-from between the new altar and the house of the Lord-and put it on the north side of the new altar.
16:15 Then King Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest, saying, "On the great new altar burn the morning burnt offering, the evening grain offering, the king's burnt sacrifice, and his grain offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, their grain offering, and their drink offerings; and sprinkle on it all the blood of the burnt offering and all the blood of the sacrifice. And the bronze altar shall be for me to inquire by."
16:16 Thus did Urijah the priest, according to all that King Ahaz commanded.
16:17 And King Ahaz cut off the panels of the carts, and removed the lavers from them; and he took down the Sea from the bronze oxen that were under it, and put it on a pavement of stones.
16:18 Also he removed the Sabbath pavilion which they had built in the temple, and he removed the king's outer entrance from the house of the Lord, on account of the king of Assyria.
16:19 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaz which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
16:20 So Ahaz rested with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the City of David. Then Hezekiah his son reigned in his place.

17:1 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea the son of Elah became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned nine years.
17:2 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, but not as the kings of Israel who were before him.
17:3 Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against him; and Hoshea became his vassal, and paid him tribute money.
17:4 And the king of Assyria uncovered a conspiracy by Hoshea; for he had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and brought no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison.
17:5 Now the king of Assyria went throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria and besieged it for three years.
17:6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria took Samaria and carried Israel away to Assyria, and placed them in Halah and by the Habor, the River of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.
17:7 For so it was that the children of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and they had feared other gods,
17:8 and had walked in the statutes of the nations whom the Lord had cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made.
17:9 Also the children of Israel secretly did against the Lord their God things that were not right, and they built for themselves high places in all their cities, from watchtower to fortified city.
17:10 They set up for themselves sacred pillars and wooden images on every high hill and under every green tree.
17:11 There they burned incense on all the high places, like the nations whom the Lord had carried away before them; and they did wicked things to provoke the Lord to anger,
17:12 for they served idols, of which the Lord had said to them, "You shall not do this thing."
17:13 Yet the Lord testified against Israel and against Judah, by all of His prophets, every seer, saying, "Turn from your evil ways, and keep My commandments and My statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by My servants the prophets."
17:14 Nevertheless they would not hear, but stiffened their necks, like the necks of their fathers, who did not believe in the Lord their God.
17:15 And they rejected His statutes and His covenant that He had made with their fathers, and His testimonies which He had testified against them; they followed idols, became idolaters, and went after the nations who were all around them, concerning whom the Lord had charged them that they should not do like them.
17:16 So they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, made for themselves a molded image and two calves, made a wooden image and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.
17:17 And they caused their sons and daughters to pass through the fire, practiced witchcraft and soothsaying, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger.
17:18 Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, and removed them from His sight; there was none left but the tribe of Judah alone.
17:19 Also Judah did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.
17:20 And the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel, afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of plunderers, until He had cast them from His sight.
17:21 For He tore Israel from the house of David, and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. Then Jeroboam drove Israel from following the Lord, and made them commit a great sin.
17:22 For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they did not depart from them,
17:23 until the Lord removed Israel out of His sight, as He had said by all His servants the prophets. So Israel was carried away from their own land to Assyria, as it is to this day.
17:24 Then the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Ava, Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel; and they took possession of Samaria and dwelt in its cities.
17:25 And it was so, at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they did not fear the Lord; therefore the Lord sent lions among them, which killed some of them.
17:26 So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, "The nations whom you have removed and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the rituals of the God of the land; therefore He has sent lions among them, and indeed, they are killing them because they do not know the rituals of the God of the land."
17:27 Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, "Send there one of the priests whom you brought from there; let him go and dwell there, and let him teach them the rituals of the God of the land."
17:28 Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the Lord.
17:29 However every nation continued to make gods of its own, and put them in the shrines on the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in the cities where they dwelt.
17:30 The men of Babylon made Succoth Benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima,
17:31 and the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sepharvites burned their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim.
17:32 So they feared the Lord, and from every class they appointed for themselves priests of the high places, who sacrificed for them in the shrines of the high places.
17:33 They feared the Lord, yet served their own gods-according to the rituals of the nations from among whom they were carried away.
17:34 To this day they continue practicing the former rituals; they do not fear the Lord, nor do they follow their statutes or their ordinances, or the law and commandment which the Lord had commanded the children of Jacob, whom He named Israel,
17:35 with whom the Lord had made a covenant and charged them, saying: "You shall not fear other gods, nor bow down to them nor serve them nor sacrifice to them;
17:36 "but the Lord, who brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power and an outstretched arm, Him you shall fear, Him you shall worship, and to Him you shall offer sacrifice.
17:37 "And the statutes, the ordinances, the law, and the commandment which He wrote for you, you shall be careful to observe forever; you shall not fear other gods.
17:38 "And the covenant that I have made with you, you shall not forget, nor shall you fear other gods.
17:39 "But the Lord your God you shall fear; and He will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies."
17:40 However they did not obey, but they followed their former rituals.
17:41 So these nations feared the Lord, yet served their carved images; also their children and their children's children have continued doing as their fathers did, even to this day.

18:1 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz, king of Judah, began to reign.
18:2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah.
18:3 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done.
18:4 He removed the high places and broke the sacred pillars, cut down the wooden image and broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and called it Nehushtan.
18:5 He trusted in the Lord God of Israel, so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor who were before him.
18:6 For he held fast to the Lord; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments, which the Lord had commanded Moses.
18:7 The Lord was with him; he prospered wherever he went. And he rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him.
18:8 He subdued the Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory, from watchtower to fortified city.
18:9 Now it came to pass in the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it.
18:10 And at the end of three years they took it. In the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is, the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.
18:11 Then the king of Assyria carried Israel away captive to Assyria, and put them in Halah and by the Habor, the River of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes,
18:12 because they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, but transgressed His covenant and all that Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded; and they would neither hear nor do them.
18:13 And in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them.
18:14 Then Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, "I have done wrong; turn away from me; whatever you impose on me I will pay." And the king of Assyria assessed Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
18:15 So Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king's house.
18:16 At that time Hezekiah stripped the gold from the doors of the temple of the Lord, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.
18:17 Then the king of Assyria sent the Tartan, the Rabsaris, and the Rabshakeh from Lachish, with a great army against Jerusalem, to King Hezekiah. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. When they had come up, they went and stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool, which was on the highway to the Fuller's Field.
18:18 And when they had called to the king, Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came out to them.
18:19 Then the Rabshakeh said to them, "Say now to Hezekiah, 'Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: "What confidence is this in which you trust?
18:20 "You speak of having plans and power for war; but they are mere words. And in whom do you trust, that you rebel against me?
18:21 "Now look! You are trusting in the staff of this broken reed, Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
18:22 "But if you say to me, 'We trust in the Lord our God,' is it not He whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and Jerusalem, 'You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem'?" '
18:23 "Now therefore, I urge you, give a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses-if you are able on your part to put riders on them!
18:24 "How then will you repel one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen?
18:25 "Have I now come up without the Lord against this place to destroy it? The Lord said to me, 'Go up against this land, and destroy it.' "
18:26 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people who are on the wall."
18:27 But the Rabshakeh said to them, "Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat and drink their own waste with you?"
18:28 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out with a loud voice in Hebrew, and spoke, saying, "Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria!
18:29 "Thus says the king: 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he shall not be able to deliver you from his hand;
18:30 'nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, "The Lord will surely deliver us; this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria." '
18:31 "Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: 'Make peace with me by a present and come out to me; and every one of you eat from his own vine and every one from his own fig tree, and every one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;
18:32 'until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive groves and honey, that you may live and not die. But do not listen to Hezekiah, lest he persuade you, saying, "The Lord will deliver us."
18:33 'Has any of the gods of the nations at all delivered its land from the hand of the king of Assyria?
18:34 'Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim and Hena and Ivah? Indeed, have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
18:35 'Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their countries from my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?' "
18:36 But the people held their peace and answered him not a word; for the king's commandment was, "Do not answer him."
18:37 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.

19:1 And so it was, when King Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord.
19:2 Then he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz.
19:3 And they said to him, "Thus says Hezekiah: 'This day is a day of trouble, and rebuke, and blasphemy; for the children have come to birth, but there is no strength to bring them forth.
19:4 'It may be that the Lord your God will hear all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to reproach the living God, and will rebuke the words which the Lord your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.' "
19:5 So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
19:6 And Isaiah said to them, "Thus you shall say to your master, 'Thus says the Lord: "Do not be afraid of the words which you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me.
19:7 "Surely I will send a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land." ' "
19:8 Then the Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah, for he heard that he had departed from Lachish.
19:9 And the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, "Look, he has come out to make war with you." So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
19:10 "Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying: 'Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, "Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."
19:11 'Look! You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by utterly destroying them; and shall you be delivered?
19:12 'Have the gods of the nations delivered those whom my fathers have destroyed, Gozan and Haran and Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar?
19:13 'Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?' "
19:14 And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord.
19:15 Then Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, and said: "O Lord God of Israel, the One who dwells between the cherubim, You are God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.
19:16 "Incline Your ear, O Lord, and hear; open Your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to reproach the living God.
19:17 "Truly, Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,
19:18 "and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were not gods, but the work of men's hands-wood and stone. Therefore they destroyed them.
19:19 "Now therefore, O Lord our God, I pray, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the Lord God, You alone."
19:20 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, "Thus says the Lord God of Israel: 'Because you have prayed to Me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard.'
19:21 "This is the word which the Lord has spoken concerning him:'The virgin, the daughter of Zion,Has despised you, laughed you to scorn;The daughter of JerusalemHas shaken her head behind your back!
19:22 'Whom have you reproached and blasphemed?Against whom have you raised your voice,And lifted up your eyes on high?Against the Holy One of Israel.
19:23 By your messengers you have reproached the Lord,And said "By the multitude of my chariotsI have come up to the height of the mountains,To the limits of Lebanon;I will cut down its tall cedarsAnd its choice cypress trees;I will enter the extremity of its borders,To its fruitful forest.
19:24 I have dug and drunk strange water,And with the soles of my feet I have dried upAll the brooks of defense."
19:25 'Did you not hear long agoHow I made it,From ancient times that I formed it?Now I have brought it to pass,That you should beFor crushing fortified cities into heaps of ruins.
19:26 Therefore their inhabitants had little power;They were dismayed and confounded;They were as the grass of the fieldAnd the green herb,As the grass on the housetopsAnd grain blighted before it is grown.
19:27 'But I know your dwelling place,Your going out and your coming in,And your rage against Me.
19:28 Because your rage against Me and your tumultHave come up to My ears,Therefore I will put My hook in your noseAnd My bridle in your lips,And I will turn you backBy the way which you came.
19:29 'This shall be a sign to you:You shall eat this year such as grows of itself,And in the second year what springs from the same;Also in the third year sow and reap,Plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them.
19:30 And the remnant who have escaped of the house of JudahShall again take root downward,And bear fruit upward.
19:31 For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant,And those who escape from Mount Zion.The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.'
19:32 "Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria:'He shall not come into this city,Nor shoot an arrow there,Nor come before it with shield,Nor build a siege mound against it.
19:33 By the way that he came,By the same shall he return;And he shall not come into this city,'Says the Lord.
19:34 'For I will defend this city, to save itFor My own sake and for My servant David's sake.' "
19:35 And it came to pass on a certain night that the angel of the Lord went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses-all dead.
19:36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went away, returned home, and remained at Nineveh.
19:37 Now it came to pass, as he was worshiping in the temple of Nisroch his god, that his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him down with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Then Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

20:1 In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said to him, "Thus says the Lord: 'Set your house in order, for you shall die, and not live.' "
20:2 Then he turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to the Lord, saying,
20:3 "Remember now, O Lord, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done what was good in Your sight." And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
20:4 And it happened, before Isaiah had gone out into the middle court, that the word of the Lord came to him, saying,
20:5 "Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, 'Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: "I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the Lord.
20:6 "And I will add to your days fifteen years. I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for My own sake, and for the sake of My servant David." ' "
20:7 Then Isaiah said, "Take a lump of figs." So they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.
20:8 And Hezekiah said to Isaiah, "What is the sign that the Lord will heal me, and that I shall go up to the house of the Lord the third day?"
20:9 Then Isaiah said, "This is the sign to you from the Lord, that the Lord will do the thing which He has spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees or go backward ten degrees?"
20:10 And Hezekiah answered, "It is an easy thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees; no, but let the shadow go backward ten degrees."
20:11 So Isaiah the prophet cried out to the Lord, and He brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down on the sundial of Ahaz.
20:12 At that time Berodach-Baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah, for he heard that Hezekiah had been sick.
20:13 And Hezekiah was attentive to them, and showed them all the house of his treasures-the silver and gold, the spices and precious ointment, and all his armory-all that was found among his treasures. There was nothing in his house or in all his dominion that Hezekiah did not show them.
20:14 Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah, and said to him, "What did these men say, and from where did they come to you?" So Hezekiah said, "They came from a far country, from Babylon."
20:15 And he said, "What have they seen in your house?" So Hezekiah answered, "They have seen all that is in my house; there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shown them."
20:16 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, "Hear the word of the Lord:
20:17 'Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house, and what your fathers have accumulated until this day, shall be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left,' says the Lord.
20:18 'And they shall take away some of your sons who will descend from you, whom you will beget; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.' "
20:19 So Hezekiah said to Isaiah, "The word of the Lord which you have spoken is good!" For he said, "Will there not be peace and truth at least in my days?"
20:20 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah-all his might, and how he made a pool and a tunnel and brought water into the city-are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
20:21 So Hezekiah rested with his fathers. Then Manasseh his son reigned in his place.

21:1 Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Hephzibah.
21:2 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.
21:3 For he rebuilt the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; he raised up altars for Baal, and made a wooden image, as Ahab king of Israel had done; and he worshiped all the host of heaven and served them.
21:4 He also built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, "In Jerusalem I will put My name."
21:5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord.
21:6 Also he made his son pass through the fire, practiced soothsaying, used witchcraft, and consulted spiritists and mediums. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger.
21:7 He even set a carved image of Asherah that he had made, in the house of which the Lord had said to David and to Solomon his son, "In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put My name forever;
21:8 "and I will not make the feet of Israel wander anymore from the land which I gave their fathers-only if they are careful to do according to all that I have commanded them, and according to all the law that My servant Moses commanded them."
21:9 But they paid no attention, and Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than the nations whom the Lord had destroyed before the children of Israel.
21:10 And the Lord spoke by His servants the prophets, saying,
21:11 "Because Manasseh king of Judah has done these abominations (he has acted more wickedly than all the Amorites who were before him, and has also made Judah sin with his idols),
21:12 "therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel: 'Behold, I am bringing such calamity upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whoever hears of it, both his ears will tingle.
21:13 'And I will stretch over Jerusalem the measuring line of Samaria and the plummet of the house of Ahab; I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down.
21:14 'So I will forsake the remnant of My inheritance and deliver them into the hand of their enemies; and they shall become victims of plunder to all their enemies,
21:15 'because they have done evil in My sight, and have provoked Me to anger since the day their fathers came out of Egypt, even to this day.' "
21:16 Moreover Manasseh shed very much innocent blood, till he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another, besides his sin by which he made Judah sin, in doing evil in the sight of the Lord.
21:17 Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh-all that he did, and the sin that he committed-are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
21:18 So Manasseh rested with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of Uzza. Then his son Amon reigned in his place.
21:19 Amon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Meshullemeth the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah.
21:20 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, as his father Manasseh had done.
21:21 So he walked in all the ways that his father had walked; and he served the idols that his father had served, and worshiped them.
21:22 He forsook the Lord God of his fathers, and did not walk in the way of the Lord.
21:23 Then the servants of Amon conspired against him, and killed the king in his own house.
21:24 But the people of the land executed all those who had conspired against King Amon. Then the people of the land made his son Josiah king in his place.
21:25 Now the rest of the acts of Amon which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
21:26 And he was buried in his tomb in the garden of Uzza. Then Josiah his son reigned in his place.

22:1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath.
22:2 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the ways of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
22:3 Now it came to pass, in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan the scribe, the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, to the house of the Lord, saying:
22:4 "Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may count the money which has been brought into the house of the Lord, which the doorkeepers have gathered from the people.
22:5 "And let them deliver it into the hand of those doing the work, who are the overseers in the house of the Lord; let them give it to those who are in the house of the Lord doing the work, to repair the damages of the house-
22:6 "to carpenters and builders and masons-and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the house.
22:7 "However there need be no accounting made with them of the money delivered into their hand, because they deal faithfully."
22:8 Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, "I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord." And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.
22:9 So Shaphan the scribe went to the king, bringing the king word, saying, "Your servants have gathered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of those who do the work, who oversee the house of the Lord."
22:10 Then Shaphan the scribe showed the king, saying, "Hilkiah the priest has given me a book." And Shaphan read it before the king.
22:11 Now it happened, when the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, that he tore his clothes.
22:12 Then the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Achbor the son of Michaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king, saying,
22:13 "Go, inquire of the Lord for me, for the people and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found; for great is the wrath of the Lord that is aroused against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us."
22:14 So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe. (She dwelt in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter.) And they spoke with her.
22:15 Then she said to them, "Thus says the Lord God of Israel, 'Tell the man who sent you to Me,
22:16 "Thus says the Lord: 'Behold, I will bring calamity on this place and on its inhabitants-all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read-
22:17 'because they have forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. Therefore My wrath shall be aroused against this place and shall not be quenched.' " '
22:18 "But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, in this manner you shall speak to him, 'Thus says the Lord God of Israel: "Concerning the words which you have heard-
22:19 "because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they would become a desolation and a curse, and you tore your clothes and wept before Me, I also have heard you," says the Lord.
22:20 "Surely, therefore, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace; and your eyes shall not see all the calamity which I will bring on this place." ' " So they brought back word to the king.

23:1 Now the king sent them to gather all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem to him.
23:2 The king went up to the house of the Lord with all the men of Judah, and with him all the inhabitants of Jerusalem-the priests and the prophets and all the people, both small and great. And he read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant which had been found in the house of the Lord.
23:3 Then the king stood by a pillar and made a covenant before the Lord, to follow the Lord and to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people took a stand for the covenant.
23:4 And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, the priests of the second order, and the doorkeepers, to bring out of the temple of the Lord all the articles that were made for Baal, for Asherah, and for all the host of heaven; and he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried their ashes to Bethel.
23:5 Then he removed the idolatrous priests whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense on the high places in the cities of Judah and in the places all around Jerusalem, and those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun, to the moon, to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.
23:6 And he brought out the wooden image from the house of the Lord, to the Brook Kidron outside Jerusalem, burned it at the Brook Kidron and ground it to ashes, and threw its ashes on the graves of the common people.
23:7 Then he tore down the ritual booths of the perverted persons that were in the house of the Lord, where the women wove hangings for the wooden image.
23:8 And he brought all the priests from the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beersheba; also he broke down the high places at the gates which were at the entrance of the Gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were to the left of the city gate.
23:9 Nevertheless the priests of the high places did not come up to the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem, but they ate unleavened bread among their brethren.
23:10 And he defiled Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter pass through the fire to Molech.
23:11 Then he removed the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun, at the entrance to the house of the Lord, by the chamber of Nathan-Melech, the officer who was in the court; and he burned the chariots of the sun with fire.
23:12 The altars that were on the roof, the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the Lord, the king broke down and pulverized there, and threw their dust into the Brook Kidron.
23:13 Then the king defiled the high places that were east of Jerusalem, which were on the south of the Mount of Corruption, which Solomon king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Sidonians, for Chemosh the abomination of the Moabites, and for Milcom the abomination of the people of Ammon.
23:14 And he broke in pieces the sacred pillars and cut down the wooden images, and filled their places with the bones of men.
23:15 Moreover the altar that was at Bethel, and the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel sin, had made, both that altar and the high place he broke down; and he burned the high place and crushed it to powder, and burned the wooden image.
23:16 As Josiah turned, he saw the tombs that were there on the mountain. And he sent and took the bones out of the tombs and burned them on the altar, and defiled it according to the word of the Lord which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words.
23:17 Then he said, "What gravestone is this that I see?" So the men of the city told him, "It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and proclaimed these things which you have done against the altar of Bethel."
23:18 And he said, "Let him alone; let no one move his bones." So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet who came from Samaria.
23:19 Now Josiah also took away all the shrines of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke the Lord to anger; and he did to them according to all the deeds he had done in Bethel.
23:20 He executed all the priests of the high places who were there, on the altars, and burned men's bones on them; and he returned to Jerusalem.
23:21 Then the king commanded all the people, saying, "Keep the Passover to the Lord your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant."
23:22 Such a Passover surely had never been held since the days of the judges who judged Israel, nor in all the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah.
23:23 But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah this Passover was held before the Lord in Jerusalem.
23:24 Moreover Josiah put away those who consulted mediums and spiritists, the household gods and idols, all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, that he might perform the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the Lord.
23:25 Now before him there was no king like him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses; nor after him did any arise like him.
23:26 Nevertheless the Lord did not turn from the fierceness of His great wrath, with which His anger was aroused against Judah, because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked Him.
23:27 And the Lord said, "I will also remove Judah from My sight, as I have removed Israel, and will cast off this city Jerusalem which I have chosen, and the house of which I said, 'My name shall be there.' "
23:28 Now the rest of the acts of Josiah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
23:29 In his days Pharaoh Necho king of Egypt went to the aid of the king of Assyria, to the River Euphrates; and King Josiah went against him. And Pharaoh Necho killed him at Megiddo when he confronted him.
23:30 Then his servants moved his body in a chariot from Megiddo, brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own tomb. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, anointed him, and made him king in his father's place.
23:31 Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.
23:32 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his fathers had done.
23:33 Now Pharaoh Necho put him in prison at Riblah in the land of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem; and he imposed on the land a tribute of one hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.
23:34 Then Pharaoh Necho made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in place of his father Josiah, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. And Pharaoh took Jehoahaz and went to Egypt, and he died there.
23:35 So Jehoiakim gave the silver and gold to Pharaoh; but he taxed the land to give money according to the command of Pharaoh; he exacted the silver and gold from the people of the land, from every one according to his assessment, to give it to Pharaoh Necho.
23:36 Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zebudah the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah.
23:37 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his fathers had done.

24:1 In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his vassal for three years. Then he turned and rebelled against him.
24:2 And the Lord sent against him raiding bands of Chaldeans, bands of Syrians, bands of Moabites, and bands of the people of Ammon; He sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord which He had spoken by His servants the prophets.
24:3 Surely at the commandment of the Lord this came upon Judah, to remove them from His sight because of the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he had done,
24:4 and also because of the innocent blood that he had shed; for he had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, which the Lord would not pardon.
24:5 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
24:6 So Jehoiakim rested with his fathers. Then Jehoiachin his son reigned in his place.
24:7 And the king of Egypt did not come out of his land anymore, for the king of Babylon had taken all that belonged to the king of Egypt from the Brook of Egypt to the River Euphrates.
24:8 Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother's name was Nehushta the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem.
24:9 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father had done.
24:10 At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city was besieged.
24:11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city, as his servants were besieging it.
24:12 Then Jehoiachin king of Judah, his mother, his servants, his princes, and his officers went out to the king of Babylon; and the king of Babylon, in the eighth year of his reign, took him prisoner.
24:13 And he carried out from there all the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king's house, and he cut in pieces all the articles of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the Lord, as the Lord had said.
24:14 Also he carried into captivity all Jerusalem: all the captains and all the mighty men of valor, ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths. None remained except the poorest people of the land.
24:15 And he carried Jehoiachin captive to Babylon. The king's mother, the king's wives, his officers, and the mighty of the land he carried into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon.
24:16 All the valiant men, seven thousand, and craftsmen and smiths, one thousand, all who were strong and fit for war, these the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon.
24:17 Then the king of Babylon made Mattaniah, Jehoiachin's uncle, king in his place, and changed his name to Zedekiah.
24:18 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.
24:19 He also did evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that Jehoiakim had done.
24:20 For because of the anger of the Lord this happened in Jerusalem and Judah, that He finally cast them out from His presence. Then Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

25:1 Now it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and encamped against it; and they built a siege wall against it all around.
25:2 So the city was besieged until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.
25:3 By the ninth day of the fourth month the famine had become so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land.
25:4 Then the city wall was broken through, and all the men of war fled at night by way of the gate between two walls, which was by the king's garden, even though the Chaldeans were still encamped all around against the city. And the king went by way of the plain.
25:5 But the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king, and they overtook him in the plains of Jericho. All his army was scattered from him.
25:6 So they took the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah, and they pronounced judgment on him.
25:7 Then they killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, put out the eyes of Zedekiah, bound him with bronze fetters, and took him to Babylon.
25:8 And in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month (which was the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem.
25:9 He burned the house of the Lord and the king's house; all the houses of Jerusalem, that is, all the houses of the great, he burned with fire.
25:10 And all the army of the Chaldeans who were with the captain of the guard broke down the walls of Jerusalem all around.
25:11 Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive the rest of the people who remained in the city and the defectors who had deserted to the king of Babylon, with the rest of the multitude.
25:12 But the captain of the guard left some of the poor of the land as vinedressers and farmers.
25:13 The bronze pillars that were in the house of the Lord, and the carts and the bronze Sea that were in the house of the Lord, the Chaldeans broke in pieces, and carried their bronze to Babylon.
25:14 They also took away the pots, the shovels, the trimmers, the spoons, and all the bronze utensils with which the priests ministered.
25:15 The firepans and the basins, the things of solid gold and solid silver, the captain of the guard took away.
25:16 The two pillars, one Sea, and the carts, which Solomon had made for the house of the Lord, the bronze of all these articles was beyond measure.
25:17 The height of one pillar was eighteen cubits, and the capital on it was of bronze. The height of the capital was three cubits, and the network and pomegranates all around the capital were all of bronze. The second pillar was the same, with a network.
25:18 And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the second priest, and the three doorkeepers.
25:19 He also took out of the city an officer who had charge of the men of war, five men of the king's close associates who were found in the city, the chief recruiting officer of the army, who mustered the people of the land, and sixty men of the people of the land who were found in the city.
25:20 So Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, took these and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah.
25:21 Then the king of Babylon struck them and put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath. Thus Judah was carried away captive from its own land.
25:22 Then he made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, governor over the people who remained in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left.
25:23 Now when all the captains of the armies, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah-Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Careah, Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men.
25:24 And Gedaliah took an oath before them and their men, and said to them, "Do not be afraid of the servants of the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you."
25:25 But it happened in the seventh month that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the royal family, came with ten men and struck and killed Gedaliah, the Jews, as well as the Chaldeans who were with him at Mizpah.
25:26 And all the people, small and great, and the captains of the armies, arose and went to Egypt; for they were afraid of the Chaldeans.
25:27 Now it came to pass in the thirty-seventh year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, that Evil-Merodach king of Babylon, in the year that he began to reign, released Jehoiachin king of Judah from prison.
25:28 He spoke kindly to him, and gave him a more prominent seat than those of the kings who were with him in Babylon.
25:29 So Jehoiachin changed from his prison garments, and he ate bread regularly before the king all the days of his life.
25:30 And as for his provisions, there was a regular ration given him by the king, a portion for each day, all the days of his life.
