◆ケトラによるアブラハムの子孫
25:1 アブラハムは、再び妻をめとった。その名はケトラといった。
25:2 彼女は、アブラハムとの間にジムラン、ヨクシャン、メダン、ミディアン、イシュバク、シュアを産んだ。
25:3 ヨクシャンにはシェバとデダンが生まれた。デダンの子孫は、アシュル人、レトシム人、レウミム人であった。
25:4 ミディアンの子孫は、エファ、エフェル、ハノク、アビダ、エルダアであった。これらは皆、ケトラの子孫であった。
25:5 アブラハムは、全財産をイサクに譲った。
25:6 側女の子供たちには贈り物を与え、自分が生きている間に、東の方、ケデム地方へ移住させ、息子イサクから遠ざけた。
◆アブラハムの死と埋葬
25:7 アブラハムの生涯は百七十五年であった。
25:8 アブラハムは長寿を全うして息を引き取り、満ち足りて死に、先祖の列に加えられた。
25:9 息子イサクとイシュマエルは、マクペラの洞穴に彼を葬った。その洞穴はマムレの前の、ヘト人ツォハルの子エフロンの畑の中にあったが、
25:10 その畑は、アブラハムがヘトの人々から買い取ったものである。そこに、アブラハムは妻サラと共に葬られた。
25:11 アブラハムが死んだ後、神は息子のイサクを祝福された。イサクは、ベエル・ラハイ・ロイの近くに住んだ。
◆イシュマエルの子孫
25:12 サラの女奴隷であったエジプト人ハガルが、アブラハムとの間に産んだ息子イシュマエルの系図は次のとおりである。
25:13 イシュマエルの息子たちの名前は、生まれた順に挙げれば、長男がネバヨト、次はケダル、アドベエル、ミブサム、
25:14 ミシュマ、ドマ、マサ、
25:15 ハダド、テマ、エトル、ナフィシュ、ケデマである。
25:16 以上がイシュマエルの息子たちで、村落や宿営地に従って付けられた名前である。彼らはそれぞれの部族の十二人の首長であった。
25:17 イシュマエルの生涯は百三十七年であった。彼は息を引き取り、死んで先祖の列に加えられた。
25:18 イシュマエルの子孫は、エジプトに近いシュルに接したハビラからアシュル方面に向かう道筋に沿って宿営し、互いに敵対しつつ生活していた。
◆エサウとヤコブの誕生
25:19 アブラハムの息子イサクの系図は次のとおりである。アブラハムにはイサクが生まれた。
25:20 イサクは、リベカと結婚したとき四十歳であった。リベカは、パダン・アラムのアラム人ベトエルの娘で、アラム人ラバンの妹であった。
25:21 イサクは、妻に子供ができなかったので、妻のために主に祈った。その祈りは主に聞き入れられ、妻リベカは身ごもった。
25:22 ところが、胎内で子供たちが押し合うので、リベカは、「これでは、わたしはどうなるのでしょう」と言って、主の御心を尋ねるために出かけた。
25:23 主は彼女に言われた。「二つの国民があなたの胎内に宿っており／二つの民があなたの腹の内で分かれ争っている。一つの民が他の民より強くなり／兄が弟に仕えるようになる。」
25:24 月が満ちて出産の時が来ると、胎内にはまさしく双子がいた。
25:25 先に出てきた子は赤くて、全身が毛皮の衣のようであったので、エサウと名付けた。
25:26 その後で弟が出てきたが、その手がエサウのかかと（アケブ）をつかんでいたので、ヤコブと名付けた。リベカが二人を産んだとき、イサクは六十歳であった。
◆長子の特権
25:27 二人の子供は成長して、エサウは巧みな狩人で野の人となったが、ヤコブは穏やかな人で天幕の周りで働くのを常とした。
25:28 イサクはエサウを愛した。狩りの獲物が好物だったからである。しかし、リベカはヤコブを愛した。
25:29 ある日のこと、ヤコブが煮物をしていると、エサウが疲れきって野原から帰って来た。
25:30 エサウはヤコブに言った。「お願いだ、その赤いもの（アドム）、そこの赤いものを食べさせてほしい。わたしは疲れきっているんだ。」彼が名をエドムとも呼ばれたのはこのためである。
25:31 ヤコブは言った。「まず、お兄さんの長子の権利を譲ってください。」
25:32 「ああ、もう死にそうだ。長子の権利などどうでもよい」とエサウが答えると、
25:33 ヤコブは言った。「では、今すぐ誓ってください。」エサウは誓い、長子の権利をヤコブに譲ってしまった。
25:34 ヤコブはエサウにパンとレンズ豆の煮物を与えた。エサウは飲み食いしたあげく立ち、去って行った。こうしてエサウは、長子の権利を軽んじた。
◆イサクのゲラル滞在
26:1 アブラハムの時代にあった飢饉とは別に、この地方にまた飢饉があったので、イサクはゲラルにいるペリシテ人の王アビメレクのところへ行った。
26:2 そのとき、主がイサクに現れて言われた。「エジプトへ下って行ってはならない。わたしが命じる土地に滞在しなさい。
26:3 あなたがこの土地に寄留するならば、わたしはあなたと共にいてあなたを祝福し、これらの土地をすべてあなたとその子孫に与え、あなたの父アブラハムに誓ったわたしの誓いを成就する。
26:4 わたしはあなたの子孫を天の星のように増やし、これらの土地をすべてあなたの子孫に与える。地上の諸国民はすべて、あなたの子孫によって祝福を得る。
26:5 アブラハムがわたしの声に聞き従い、わたしの戒めや命令、掟や教えを守ったからである。」
26:6 そこで、イサクはゲラルに住んだ。
26:7 その土地の人たちがイサクの妻のことを尋ねたとき、彼は、自分の妻だと言うのを恐れて、「わたしの妹です」と答えた。リベカが美しかったので、土地の者たちがリベカのゆえに自分を殺すのではないかと思ったからである。
26:8 イサクは長く滞在していたが、あるとき、ペリシテ人の王アビメレクが窓から下を眺めると、イサクが妻のリベカと戯れていた。
26:9 アビメレクは早速イサクを呼びつけて言った。「あの女は、本当はあなたの妻ではないか。それなのになぜ、『わたしの妹です』などと言ったのか。」「彼女のゆえにわたしは死ぬことになるかもしれないと思ったからです」とイサクは答えると、
26:10 アビメレクは言った。「あなたは何ということをしたのだ。民のだれかがあなたの妻と寝たら、あなたは我々を罪に陥れるところであった。」
26:11 アビメレクはすべての民に命令を下した。「この人、またはその妻に危害を加える者は、必ず死刑に処せられる。」
26:12 イサクがその土地に穀物の種を蒔くと、その年のうちに百倍もの収穫があった。イサクが主の祝福を受けて、
26:13 豊かになり、ますます富み栄えて、
26:14 多くの羊や牛の群れ、それに多くの召し使いを持つようになると、ペリシテ人はイサクをねたむようになった。
◆井戸をめぐる争い
26:15 ペリシテ人は、昔、イサクの父アブラハムが僕たちに掘らせた井戸をことごとくふさぎ、土で埋めた。
26:16 アビメレクはイサクに言った。「あなたは我々と比べてあまりに強くなった。どうか、ここから出て行っていただきたい。」
26:17 イサクはそこを去って、ゲラルの谷に天幕を張って住んだ。
26:18 そこにも、父アブラハムの時代に掘った井戸が幾つかあったが、アブラハムの死後、ペリシテ人がそれらをふさいでしまっていた。イサクはそれらの井戸を掘り直し、父が付けたとおりの名前を付けた。
26:19 イサクの僕たちが谷で井戸を掘り、水が豊かに湧き出る井戸を見つけると、
26:20 ゲラルの羊飼いは、「この水は我々のものだ」とイサクの羊飼いと争った。そこで、イサクはその井戸をエセク（争い）と名付けた。彼らがイサクと争ったからである。
26:21 イサクの僕たちがもう一つの井戸を掘り当てると、それについても争いが生じた。そこで、イサクはその井戸をシトナ（敵意）と名付けた。
26:22 イサクはそこから移って、更にもう一つの井戸を掘り当てた。それについては、もはや争いは起こらなかった。イサクは、その井戸をレホボト（広い場所）と名付け、「今や、主は我々の繁栄のために広い場所をお与えになった」と言った。
26:23 イサクは更に、そこからベエル・シェバに上った。
26:24 その夜、主が現れて言われた。「わたしは、あなたの父アブラハムの神である。恐れてはならない。わたしはあなたと共にいる。わたしはあなたを祝福し、子孫を増やす／わが僕アブラハムのゆえに。」
26:25 イサクは、そこに祭壇を築き、主の御名を呼んで礼拝した。彼はそこに天幕を張り、イサクの僕たちは井戸を掘った。
◆イサクとアビメレクの契約
26:26 アビメレクが参謀のアフザトと軍隊の長のピコルと共に、ゲラルからイサクのところに来た。
26:27 イサクは彼らに尋ねた。「あなたたちは、わたしを憎んで追い出したのに、なぜここに来たのですか。」
26:28 彼らは答えた。「主があなたと共におられることがよく分かったからです。そこで考えたのですが、我々はお互いに、つまり、我々とあなたとの間で誓約を交わし、あなたと契約を結びたいのです。
26:29 以前、我々はあなたに何ら危害を加えず、むしろあなたのためになるよう計り、あなたを無事に送り出しました。そのようにあなたも、我々にいかなる害も与えないでください。あなたは確かに、主に祝福された方です。」
26:30 そこで、イサクは彼らのために祝宴を催し、共に飲み食いした。
26:31 次の朝早く、互いに誓いを交わした後、イサクは彼らを送り出し、彼らは安らかに去って行った。
26:32 その日に、井戸を掘っていたイサクの僕たちが帰って来て、「水が出ました」と報告した。
26:33 そこで、イサクはその井戸をシブア（誓い）と名付けた。そこで、その町の名は、今日に至るまで、ベエル・シェバ（誓いの井戸）といわれている。
◆エサウの妻
26:34 エサウは、四十歳のときヘト人ベエリの娘ユディトとヘト人エロンの娘バセマトを妻として迎えた。
26:35 彼女たちは、イサクとリベカにとって悩みの種となった。
◆リベカの計略
27:1 イサクは年をとり、目がかすんで見えなくなってきた。そこで上の息子のエサウを呼び寄せて、「息子よ」と言った。エサウが、「はい」と答えると、
27:2 イサクは言った。「こんなに年をとったので、わたしはいつ死ぬか分からない。
27:3 今すぐに、弓と矢筒など、狩りの道具を持って野に行き、獲物を取って来て、
27:4 わたしの好きなおいしい料理を作り、ここへ持って来てほしい。死ぬ前にそれを食べて、わたし自身の祝福をお前に与えたい。」
27:5 リベカは、イサクが息子のエサウに話しているのを聞いていた。エサウが獲物を取りに野に行くと、
27:6 リベカは息子のヤコブに言った。「今、お父さんが兄さんのエサウにこう言っているのを耳にしました。
27:7 『獲物を取って来て、あのおいしい料理を作ってほしい。わたしは死ぬ前にそれを食べて、主の御前でお前を祝福したい』と。
27:8 わたしの子よ。今、わたしが言うことをよく聞いてそのとおりにしなさい。
27:9 家畜の群れのところへ行って、よく肥えた子山羊を二匹取って来なさい。わたしが、それでお父さんの好きなおいしい料理を作りますから、
27:10 それをお父さんのところへ持って行きなさい。お父さんは召し上がって、亡くなる前にお前を祝福してくださるでしょう。」
27:11 しかし、ヤコブは母リベカに言った。「でも、エサウ兄さんはとても毛深いのに、わたしの肌は滑らかです。
27:12 お父さんがわたしに触れば、だましているのが分かります。そうしたら、わたしは祝福どころか、反対に呪いを受けてしまいます。」
27:13 母は言った。「わたしの子よ。そのときにはお母さんがその呪いを引き受けます。ただ、わたしの言うとおりに、行って取って来なさい。」
27:14 ヤコブは取りに行き、母のところに持って来たので、母は父の好きなおいしい料理を作った。
27:15 リベカは、家にしまっておいた上の息子エサウの晴れ着を取り出して、下の息子ヤコブに着せ、
27:16 子山羊の毛皮を彼の腕や滑らかな首に巻きつけて、
27:17 自分が作ったおいしい料理とパンを息子ヤコブに渡した。
◆祝福をだまし取るヤコブ
27:18 ヤコブは、父のもとへ行き、「わたしのお父さん」と呼びかけた。父が、「ここにいる。わたしの子よ。誰だ、お前は」と尋ねると、
27:19 ヤコブは言った。「長男のエサウです。お父さんの言われたとおりにしてきました。さあ、どうぞ起きて、座ってわたしの獲物を召し上がり、お父さん自身の祝福をわたしに与えてください。」
27:20 「わたしの子よ、どうしてまた、こんなに早くしとめられたのか」と、イサクが息子に尋ねると、ヤコブは答えた。「あなたの神、主がわたしのために計らってくださったからです。」
27:21 イサクはヤコブに言った。「近寄りなさい。わたしの子に触って、本当にお前が息子のエサウかどうか、確かめたい。」
27:22 ヤコブが父イサクに近寄ると、イサクは彼に触りながら言った。「声はヤコブの声だが、腕はエサウの腕だ。」
27:23 イサクは、ヤコブの腕が兄エサウの腕のように毛深くなっていたので、見破ることができなかった。そこで、彼は祝福しようとして、
27:24 言った。「お前は本当にわたしの子エサウなのだな。」ヤコブは、「もちろんです」と答えた。
27:25 イサクは言った。「では、お前の獲物をここへ持って来なさい。それを食べて、わたし自身の祝福をお前に与えよう。」ヤコブが料理を差し出すと、イサクは食べ、ぶどう酒をつぐと、それを飲んだ。
27:26 それから、父イサクは彼に言った。「わたしの子よ、近寄ってわたしに口づけをしなさい。」
27:27 ヤコブが近寄って口づけをすると、イサクは、ヤコブの着物の匂いをかいで、祝福して言った。「ああ、わたしの子の香りは／主が祝福された野の香りのようだ。
27:28 どうか、神が／天の露と地の産み出す豊かなもの／穀物とぶどう酒を／お前に与えてくださるように。
27:29 多くの民がお前に仕え／多くの国民がお前にひれ伏す。お前は兄弟たちの主人となり／母の子らもお前にひれ伏す。お前を呪う者は呪われ／お前を祝福する者は／祝福されるように。」
◆悔しがるエサウ
27:30 イサクがヤコブを祝福し終えて、ヤコブが父イサクの前から立ち去るとすぐ、兄エサウが狩りから帰って来た。
27:31 彼もおいしい料理を作り、父のところへ持って来て言った。「わたしのお父さん。起きて、息子の獲物を食べてください。そして、あなた自身の祝福をわたしに与えてください。」
27:32 父イサクが、「お前は誰なのか」と聞くと、「わたしです。あなたの息子、長男のエサウです」と答えが返ってきた。
27:33 イサクは激しく体を震わせて言った。「では、あれは、一体誰だったのだ。さっき獲物を取ってわたしのところに持って来たのは。実は、お前が来る前にわたしはみんな食べて、彼を祝福してしまった。だから、彼が祝福されたものになっている。」
27:34 エサウはこの父の言葉を聞くと、悲痛な叫びをあげて激しく泣き、父に向かって言った。「わたしのお父さん。わたしも、このわたしも祝福してください。」
27:35 イサクは言った。「お前の弟が来て策略を使い、お前の祝福を奪ってしまった。」
27:36 エサウは叫んだ。「彼をヤコブとは、よくも名付けたものだ。これで二度も、わたしの足を引っ張り（アーカブ）欺いた。あのときはわたしの長子の権利を奪い、今度はわたしの祝福を奪ってしまった。」エサウは続けて言った。「お父さんは、わたしのために祝福を残しておいてくれなかったのですか。」
27:37 イサクはエサウに答えた。「既にわたしは、彼をお前の主人とし、親族をすべて彼の僕とし、穀物もぶどう酒も彼のものにしてしまった。わたしの子よ。今となっては、お前のために何をしてやれようか。」
27:38 エサウは父に叫んだ。「わたしのお父さん。祝福はたった一つしかないのですか。わたしも、このわたしも祝福してください、わたしのお父さん。」エサウは声をあげて泣いた。
27:39 父イサクは言った。「ああ／地の産み出す豊かなものから遠く離れた所／この後お前はそこに住む／天の露からも遠く隔てられて。
27:40 お前は剣に頼って生きていく。しかしお前は弟に仕える。いつの日にかお前は反抗を企て／自分の首から軛を振り落とす。」
◆逃亡の勧め
27:41 エサウは、父がヤコブを祝福したことを根に持って、ヤコブを憎むようになった。そして、心の中で言った。「父の喪の日も遠くない。そのときがきたら、必ず弟のヤコブを殺してやる。」
27:42 ところが、上の息子エサウのこの言葉が母リベカの耳に入った。彼女は人をやって、下の息子のヤコブを呼び寄せて言った。「大変です。エサウ兄さんがお前を殺して恨みを晴らそうとしています。
27:43 わたしの子よ。今、わたしの言うことをよく聞き、急いでハランに、わたしの兄ラバンの所へ逃げて行きなさい。
27:44 そして、お兄さんの怒りが治まるまで、しばらく伯父さんの所に置いてもらいなさい。
27:45 そのうちに、お兄さんの憤りも治まり、お前のしたことを忘れてくれるだろうから、そのときには人をやってお前を呼び戻します。一日のうちにお前たち二人を失うことなど、どうしてできましょう。」
◆ヤコブの出発
27:46 リベカはイサクに言った。「わたしは、ヘト人の娘たちのことで、生きているのが嫌になりました。もしヤコブまでも、この土地の娘の中からあんなヘト人の娘をめとったら、わたしは生きているかいがありません。」
28:1 イサクはヤコブを呼び寄せて祝福して、命じた。「お前はカナンの娘の中から妻を迎えてはいけない。
28:2 ここをたって、パダン・アラムのベトエルおじいさんの家に行き、そこでラバン伯父さんの娘の中から結婚相手を見つけなさい。
28:3 どうか、全能の神がお前を祝福して繁栄させ、お前を増やして多くの民の群れとしてくださるように。
28:4 どうか、アブラハムの祝福がお前とその子孫に及び、神がアブラハムに与えられた土地、お前が寄留しているこの土地を受け継ぐことができるように。」
28:5 ヤコブはイサクに送り出されて、パダン・アラムのラバンの所へ旅立った。ラバンはアラム人ベトエルの息子で、ヤコブとエサウの母リベカの兄であった。
◆エサウの別の妻
28:6 エサウは、イサクがヤコブを祝福し、パダン・アラムへ送り出し、そこから妻を迎えさせようとしたこと、しかも彼を祝福したとき、「カナンの娘の中から妻を迎えてはいけない」と命じたこと、
28:7 そして、ヤコブが父と母の命令に従ってパダン・アラムへ旅立ったことなどを知った。
28:8 エサウは、カナンの娘たちが父イサクの気に入らないことを知って、
28:9 イシュマエルのところへ行き、既にいる妻のほかにもう一人、アブラハムの息子イシュマエルの娘で、ネバヨトの妹に当たるマハラトを妻とした。
◆ヤコブの夢
28:10 ヤコブはベエル・シェバを立ってハランへ向かった。
28:11 とある場所に来たとき、日が沈んだので、そこで一夜を過ごすことにした。ヤコブはその場所にあった石を一つ取って枕にして、その場所に横たわった。
28:12 すると、彼は夢を見た。先端が天まで達する階段が地に向かって伸びており、しかも、神の御使いたちがそれを上ったり下ったりしていた。
28:13 見よ、主が傍らに立って言われた。「わたしは、あなたの父祖アブラハムの神、イサクの神、主である。あなたが今横たわっているこの土地を、あなたとあなたの子孫に与える。
28:14 あなたの子孫は大地の砂粒のように多くなり、西へ、東へ、北へ、南へと広がっていくであろう。地上の氏族はすべて、あなたとあなたの子孫によって祝福に入る。
28:15 見よ、わたしはあなたと共にいる。あなたがどこへ行っても、わたしはあなたを守り、必ずこの土地に連れ帰る。わたしは、あなたに約束したことを果たすまで決して見捨てない。」
28:16 ヤコブは眠りから覚めて言った。「まことに主がこの場所におられるのに、わたしは知らなかった。」
28:17 そして、恐れおののいて言った。「ここは、なんと畏れ多い場所だろう。これはまさしく神の家である。そうだ、ここは天の門だ。」
28:18 ヤコブは次の朝早く起きて、枕にしていた石を取り、それを記念碑として立て、先端に油を注いで、
28:19 その場所をベテル（神の家）と名付けた。ちなみに、その町の名はかつてルズと呼ばれていた。
28:20 ヤコブはまた、誓願を立てて言った。「神がわたしと共におられ、わたしが歩むこの旅路を守り、食べ物、着る物を与え、
28:21 無事に父の家に帰らせてくださり、主がわたしの神となられるなら、
28:22 わたしが記念碑として立てたこの石を神の家とし、すべて、あなたがわたしに与えられるものの十分の一をささげます。」
◆ラバンの家に着く
29:1 ヤコブは旅を続けて、東方の人々の土地へ行った。
29:2 ふと見ると、野原に井戸があり、そのそばに羊が三つの群れになって伏していた。その井戸から羊の群れに、水を飲ませることになっていたからである。ところが、井戸の口の上には大きな石が載せてあった。
29:3 まず羊の群れを全部そこに集め、石を井戸の口から転がして羊の群れに水を飲ませ、また石を元の所に戻しておくことになっていた。
29:4 ヤコブはそこにいた人たちに尋ねた。「皆さんはどちらの方ですか。」「わたしたちはハランの者です」と答えたので、
29:5 ヤコブは尋ねた。「では、ナホルの息子のラバンを知っていますか。」「ええ、知っています」と彼らが答えたので、
29:6 ヤコブは更に尋ねた。「元気でしょうか。」「元気です。もうすぐ、娘のラケルも羊の群れを連れてやって来ます」と彼らは答えた。
29:7 ヤコブは言った。「まだこんなに日は高いし、家畜を集める時でもない。羊に水を飲ませて、もう一度草を食べさせに行ったらどうですか。」
29:8 すると、彼らは答えた。「そうはできないのです。羊の群れを全部ここに集め、あの石を井戸の口から転がして羊に水を飲ませるのですから。」
29:9 ヤコブが彼らと話しているうちに、ラケルが父の羊の群れを連れてやって来た。彼女も羊を飼っていたからである。
29:10 ヤコブは、伯父ラバンの娘ラケルと伯父ラバンの羊の群れを見るとすぐに、井戸の口へ近寄り石を転がして、伯父ラバンの羊に水を飲ませた。
29:11 ヤコブはラケルに口づけし、声をあげて泣いた。
29:12 ヤコブはやがて、ラケルに、自分が彼女の父の甥に当たり、リベカの息子であることを打ち明けた。ラケルは走って行って、父に知らせた。
29:13 ラバンは、妹の息子ヤコブの事を聞くと、走って迎えに行き、ヤコブを抱き締め口づけした。それから、ヤコブを自分の家に案内した。ヤコブがラバンに事の次第をすべて話すと、
29:14 ラバンは彼に言った。「お前は、本当にわたしの骨肉の者だ。」
◆ヤコブの結婚
29:14 ヤコブがラバンのもとにひと月ほど滞在したある日、
29:15 ラバンはヤコブに言った。「お前は身内の者だからといって、ただで働くことはない。どんな報酬が欲しいか言ってみなさい。」
29:16 ところで、ラバンには二人の娘があり、姉の方はレア、妹の方はラケルといった。
29:17 レアは優しい目をしていたが、ラケルは顔も美しく、容姿も優れていた。
29:18 ヤコブはラケルを愛していたので、「下の娘のラケルをくださるなら、わたしは七年間あなたの所で働きます」と言った。
29:19 ラバンは答えた。「あの娘をほかの人に嫁がせるより、お前に嫁がせる方が良い。わたしの所にいなさい。」
29:20 ヤコブはラケルのために七年間働いたが、彼女を愛していたので、それはほんの数日のように思われた。
29:21 ヤコブはラバンに言った。「約束の年月が満ちましたから、わたしのいいなずけと一緒にならせてください。」
29:22 ラバンは土地の人たちを皆集め祝宴を開き、
29:23 夜になると、娘のレアをヤコブのもとに連れて行ったので、ヤコブは彼女のところに入った。
29:24 ラバンはまた、女奴隷ジルパを娘レアに召し使いとして付けてやった。
29:25 ところが、朝になってみると、それはレアであった。ヤコブがラバンに、「どうしてこんなことをなさったのですか。わたしがあなたのもとで働いたのは、ラケルのためではありませんか。なぜ、わたしをだましたのですか」と言うと、

29:27 とにかく、この一週間の婚礼の祝いを済ませなさい。そうすれば、妹の方もお前に嫁がせよう。だがもう七年間、うちで働いてもらわねばならない。」
29:28 ヤコブが、言われたとおり一週間の婚礼の祝いを済ませると、ラバンは下の娘のラケルもヤコブに妻として与えた。
29:29 ラバンはまた、女奴隷ビルハを娘ラケルに召し使いとして付けてやった。
29:30 こうして、ヤコブはラケルをめとった。ヤコブはレアよりもラケルを愛した。そして、更にもう七年ラバンのもとで働いた。
◆ヤコブの子供
29:31 主は、レアが疎んじられているのを見て彼女の胎を開かれたが、ラケルには子供ができなかった。
29:32 レアは身ごもって男の子を産み、ルベンと名付けた。それは、彼女が、「主はわたしの苦しみを顧みて（ラア）くださった。これからは夫もわたしを愛してくれるにちがいない」と言ったからである。
29:33 レアはまた身ごもって男の子を産み、「主はわたしが疎んじられていることを耳にされ（シャマ）、またこの子をも授けてくださった」と言って、シメオンと名付けた。
29:34 レアはまた身ごもって男の子を産み、「これからはきっと、夫はわたしに結び付いて（ラベ）くれるだろう。夫のために三人も男の子を産んだのだから」と言った。そこで、その子をレビと名付けた。
29:35 レアはまた身ごもって男の子を産み、「今度こそ主をほめたたえ（ヤダ）よう」と言った。そこで、その子をユダと名付けた。しばらく、彼女は子を産まなくなった。
30:1 ラケルは、ヤコブとの間に子供ができないことが分かると、姉をねたむようになり、ヤコブに向かって、「わたしにもぜひ子供を与えてください。与えてくださらなければ、わたしは死にます」と言った。
30:2 ヤコブは激しく怒って、言った。「わたしが神に代われると言うのか。お前の胎に子供を宿らせないのは神御自身なのだ。」
30:3 ラケルは、「わたしの召し使いのビルハがいます。彼女のところに入ってください。彼女が子供を産み、わたしがその子を膝の上に迎えれば、彼女によってわたしも子供を持つことができます」と言った。
30:4 ラケルはヤコブに召し使いビルハを側女として与えたので、ヤコブは彼女のところに入った。
30:5 やがて、ビルハは身ごもってヤコブとの間に男の子を産んだ。
30:6 そのときラケルは、「わたしの訴えを神は正しくお裁き（ディン）になり、わたしの願いを聞き入れ男の子を与えてくださった」と言った。そこで、彼女はその子をダンと名付けた。
30:7 ラケルの召し使いビルハはまた身ごもって、ヤコブとの間に二人目の男の子を産んだ。
30:8 そのときラケルは、「姉と死に物狂いの争いをして（ニフタル）、ついに勝った」と言って、その名をナフタリと名付けた。
30:9 レアも自分に子供ができなくなったのを知ると、自分の召し使いジルパをヤコブに側女として与えたので、
30:10 レアの召し使いジルパはヤコブとの間に男の子を産んだ。
30:11 そのときレアは、「なんと幸運な（ガド）」と言って、その子をガドと名付けた。
30:12 レアの召し使いジルパはヤコブとの間に二人目の男の子を産んだ。
30:13 そのときレアは、「なんと幸せなこと（アシェル）か。娘たちはわたしを幸せ者と言うにちがいない」と言って、その子をアシェルと名付けた。
30:14 小麦の刈り入れのころ、ルベンは野原で恋なすびを見つけ、母レアのところへ持って来た。ラケルがレアに、「あなたの子供が取って来た恋なすびをわたしに分けてください」と言うと、
30:15 レアは言った。「あなたは、わたしの夫を取っただけでは気が済まず、わたしの息子の恋なすびまで取ろうとするのですか。」「それでは、あなたの子供の恋なすびの代わりに、今夜あの人があなたと床を共にするようにしましょう」とラケルは答えた。
30:16 夕方になり、ヤコブが野原から帰って来ると、レアは出迎えて言った。「あなたはわたしのところに来なければなりません。わたしは、息子の恋なすびであなたを雇ったのですから。」その夜、ヤコブはレアと寝た。
30:17 神がレアの願いを聞き入れられたので、レアは身ごもってヤコブとの間に五人目の男の子を産んだ。
30:18 そのときレアは、「わたしが召し使いを夫に与えたので、神はその報酬（サカル）をくださった」と言って、その子をイサカルと名付けた。
30:19 レアはまた身ごもって、ヤコブとの間に六人目の男の子を産んだ。
30:20 そのときレアは、「神がすばらしい贈り物をわたしにくださった。今度こそ、夫はわたしを尊敬してくれる（ザバル）でしょう。夫のために六人も男の子を産んだのだから」と言って、その子をゼブルンと名付けた。
30:21 その後、レアは女の子を産み、その子をディナと名付けた。
30:22 しかし、神はラケルも御心に留め、彼女の願いを聞き入れその胎を開かれたので、
30:23 ラケルは身ごもって男の子を産んだ。そのときラケルは、「神がわたしの恥をすすいでくださった」と言った。
30:24 彼女は、「主がわたしにもう一人男の子を加えてくださいますように（ヨセフ）」と願っていたので、その子をヨセフと名付けた。
◆ラバンとの駆け引き
30:25 ラケルがヨセフを産んだころ、ヤコブはラバンに言った。「わたしを独り立ちさせて、生まれ故郷へ帰らせてください。
30:26 わたしは今まで、妻を得るためにあなたのところで働いてきたのですから、妻子と共に帰らせてください。あなたのために、わたしがどんなに尽くしてきたか、よくご存じのはずです。」
30:27 「もし、お前さえ良ければ、もっといてほしいのだが。実は占いで、わたしはお前のお陰で、主から祝福をいただいていることが分かったのだ」とラバンは言い、
30:28 更に続けて、「お前の望む報酬をはっきり言いなさい。必ず支払うから」と言った。
30:29 ヤコブは言った。「わたしがどんなにあなたのために尽くし、家畜の世話をしてきたかよくご存じのはずです。
30:30 わたしが来るまではわずかだった家畜が、今ではこんなに多くなっています。わたしが来てからは、主があなたを祝福しておられます。しかし今のままでは、いつになったらわたしは自分の家を持つことができるでしょうか。」
30:31 「何をお前に支払えばよいのか」とラバンが尋ねると、ヤコブは答えた。「何もくださるには及びません。ただこういう条件なら、もう一度あなたの群れを飼い、世話をいたしましょう。
30:32 今日、わたしはあなたの群れを全部見回って、その中から、ぶちとまだらの羊をすべてと羊の中で黒みがかったものをすべて、それからまだらとぶちの山羊を取り出しておきますから、それをわたしの報酬にしてください。
30:33 明日、あなたが来てわたしの報酬をよく調べれば、わたしの正しいことは証明されるでしょう。山羊の中にぶちとまだらでないものや、羊の中に黒みがかっていないものがあったら、わたしが盗んだものと見なして結構です。」
30:34 ラバンは言った。「よろしい。お前の言うとおりにしよう。」
30:35 ところが、その日、ラバンは縞やまだらの雄山羊とぶちやまだらの雌山羊全部、つまり白いところが混じっているもの全部とそれに黒みがかった羊をみな取り出して自分の息子たちの手に渡し、
30:36 ヤコブがラバンの残りの群れを飼っている間に、自分とヤコブとの間に歩いて三日かかるほどの距離をおいた。
◆ヤコブの工夫
30:37 ヤコブは、ポプラとアーモンドとプラタナスの木の若枝を取って来て、皮をはぎ、枝に白い木肌の縞を作り、
30:38 家畜の群れがやって来たときに群れの目につくように、皮をはいだ枝を家畜の水飲み場の水槽の中に入れた。そして、家畜の群れが水を飲みにやって来たとき、さかりがつくようにしたので、
30:39 家畜の群れは、その枝の前で交尾して縞やぶちやまだらのものを産んだ。
30:40 また、ヤコブは羊を二手に分けて、一方の群れをラバンの群れの中の縞のものと全体が黒みがかったものとに向かわせた。彼は、自分の群れだけにはそうしたが、ラバンの群れにはそうしなかった。
30:41 また、丈夫な羊が交尾する時期になると、ヤコブは皮をはいだ枝をいつも水ぶねの中に入れて群れの前に置き、枝のそばで交尾させたが、
30:42 弱い羊のときには枝を置かなかった。そこで、弱いのはラバンのものとなり、丈夫なのはヤコブのものとなった。
30:43 こうして、ヤコブはますます豊かになり、多くの家畜や男女の奴隷、それにらくだやろばなどを持つようになった。
◆ヤコブの脱走
31:1 ヤコブは、ラバンの息子たちが、「ヤコブは我々の父のものを全部奪ってしまった。父のものをごまかして、あの富を築き上げたのだ」と言っているのを耳にした。
31:2 また、ラバンの態度を見ると、確かに以前とは変わっていた。
31:3 主はヤコブに言われた。「あなたは、あなたの故郷である先祖の土地に帰りなさい。わたしはあなたと共にいる。」
31:4 ヤコブは人をやって、ラケルとレアを家畜の群れがいる野原に呼び寄せて、
31:5 言った。「最近、気づいたのだが、あなたたちのお父さんは、わたしに対して以前とは態度が変わった。しかし、わたしの父の神は、ずっとわたしと共にいてくださった。
31:6 あなたたちも知っているように、わたしは全力を尽くしてあなたたちのお父さんのもとで働いてきたのに、
31:7 わたしをだまして、わたしの報酬を十回も変えた。しかし、神はわたしに害を加えることをお許しにならなかった。
31:8 お父さんが、『ぶちのものがお前の報酬だ』と言えば、群れはみなぶちのものを産むし、『縞のものがお前の報酬だ』と言えば、群れはみな縞のものを産んだ。
31:9 神はあなたたちのお父さんの家畜を取り上げて、わたしにお与えになったのだ。
31:10 群れの発情期のころのことだが、夢の中でわたしが目を上げて見ると、雌山羊の群れとつがっている雄山羊は縞とぶちとまだらのものばかりだった。
31:11 そのとき、夢の中で神の御使いが、『ヤコブよ』と言われたので、『はい』と答えると、
31:12 こう言われた。『目を上げて見なさい。雌山羊の群れとつがっている雄山羊はみな、縞とぶちとまだらのものだけだ。ラバンのあなたに対する仕打ちは、すべてわたしには分かっている。
31:13 わたしはベテルの神である。かつてあなたは、そこに記念碑を立てて油を注ぎ、わたしに誓願を立てたではないか。さあ、今すぐこの土地を出て、あなたの故郷に帰りなさい。』」
31:14 ラケルとレアはヤコブに答えた。「父の家に、わたしたちへの嗣業の割り当て分がまだあるでしょうか。
31:15 わたしたちはもう、父にとって他人と同じではありませんか。父はわたしたちを売って、しかもそのお金を使い果たしてしまったのです。
31:16 神様が父から取り上げられた財産は、確かに全部わたしたちと子供たちのものです。ですから、どうか今すぐ、神様があなたに告げられたとおりになさってください。」
31:17 ヤコブは直ちに、子供たちと妻たちをらくだに乗せ、
31:18 パダン・アラムで得たすべての財産である家畜を駆り立てて、父イサクのいるカナン地方へ向かって出発した。
31:19 そのとき、ラバンは羊の毛を刈りに出かけていたので、ラケルは父の家の守り神の像を盗んだ。
31:20 ヤコブもアラム人ラバンを欺いて、自分が逃げ去ることを悟られないようにした。
31:21 ヤコブはこうして、すべての財産を持って逃げ出し、川を渡りギレアドの山地へ向かった。
◆ラバンの追跡
31:22 ヤコブが逃げたことがラバンに知れたのは、三日目であった。
31:23 ラバンは一族を率いて、七日の道のりを追いかけて行き、ギレアドの山地でヤコブに追いついたが、
31:24 その夜夢の中で神は、アラム人ラバンのもとに来て言われた。「ヤコブを一切非難せぬよう、よく心に留めておきなさい。」
31:25 ラバンがヤコブに追いついたとき、ヤコブは山の上に天幕を張っていたので、ラバンも一族と共にギレアドの山に天幕を張った。
31:26 ラバンはヤコブに言った。「一体何ということをしたのか。わたしを欺き、しかも娘たちを戦争の捕虜のように駆り立てて行くとは。
31:27 なぜ、こっそり逃げ出したりして、わたしをだましたのか。ひとこと言ってくれさえすれば、わたしは太鼓や竪琴で喜び歌って、送り出してやったものを。
31:28 孫や娘たちに別れの口づけもさせないとは愚かなことをしたものだ。
31:29 わたしはお前たちをひどい目に遭わせることもできるが、夕べ、お前たちの父の神が、『ヤコブを一切非難せぬよう、よく心に留めておきなさい』とわたしにお告げになった。
31:30 父の家が恋しくて去るのなら、去ってもよい。しかし、なぜわたしの守り神を盗んだのか。」
31:31 ヤコブはラバンに答えた。「わたしは、あなたが娘たちをわたしから奪い取るのではないかと思って恐れただけです。
31:32 もし、あなたの守り神がだれかのところで見つかれば、その者を生かしてはおきません。我々一同の前で、わたしのところにあなたのものがあるかどうか調べて、取り戻してください。」ヤコブは、ラケルがそれを盗んでいたことを知らなかったのである。
31:33 そこで、ラバンはヤコブの天幕に入り、更にレアの天幕や二人の召し使いの天幕にも入って捜してみたが、見つからなかった。ラバンがレアの天幕を出てラケルの天幕に入ると、
31:34 ラケルは既に守り神の像を取って、らくだの鞍の下に入れ、その上に座っていたので、ラバンは天幕の中をくまなく調べたが見つけることはできなかった。
31:35 ラケルは父に言った。「お父さん、どうか悪く思わないでください。わたしは今、月のものがあるので立てません。」ラバンはなおも捜したが、守り神の像を見つけることはできなかった。
31:36 ヤコブは怒ってラバンを責め、言い返した。「わたしに何の背反、何の罪があって、わたしの後を追って来られたのですか。
31:37 あなたはわたしの物を一つ残らず調べられましたが、あなたの家の物が一つでも見つかりましたか。それをここに出して、わたしの一族とあなたの一族の前に置き、わたしたち二人の間を、皆に裁いてもらおうではありませんか。
31:38 この二十年間というもの、わたしはあなたのもとにいましたが、あなたの雌羊や雌山羊が子を産み損ねたことはありません。わたしは、あなたの群れの雄羊を食べたこともありません。
31:39 野獣にかみ裂かれたものがあっても、あなたのところへ持って行かないで自分で償いました。昼であろうと夜であろうと、盗まれたものはみな弁償するようにあなたは要求しました。
31:40 しかも、わたしはしばしば、昼は猛暑に夜は極寒に悩まされ、眠ることもできませんでした。
31:41 この二十年間というもの、わたしはあなたの家で過ごしましたが、そのうち十四年はあなたの二人の娘のため、六年はあなたの家畜の群れのために働きました。しかも、あなたはわたしの報酬を十回も変えました。
31:42 もし、わたしの父の神、アブラハムの神、イサクの畏れ敬う方がわたしの味方でなかったなら、あなたはきっと何も持たせずにわたしを追い出したことでしょう。神は、わたしの労苦と悩みを目に留められ、昨夜、あなたを諭されたのです。」
◆ヤコブとラバンの契約
31:43 ラバンは、ヤコブに答えた。「この娘たちはわたしの娘だ。この孫たちもわたしの孫だ。この家畜の群れもわたしの群れ、いや、お前の目の前にあるものはみなわたしのものだ。しかし、娘たちや娘たちが産んだ孫たちのために、もはや、手出しをしようとは思わない。
31:44 さあ、これから、お前とわたしは契約を結ぼうではないか。そして、お前とわたしの間に何か証拠となるものを立てよう。」
31:45 ヤコブは一つの石を取り、それを記念碑として立て、
31:46 一族の者に、「石を集めてきてくれ」と言った。彼らは石を取ってきて石塚を築き、その石塚の傍らで食事を共にした。
31:47 ラバンはそれをエガル・サハドタと呼び、ヤコブはガルエドと呼んだ。
31:48 ラバンはまた、「この石塚（ガル）は、今日からお前とわたしの間の証拠（エド）となる」とも言った。そこで、その名はガルエドと呼ばれるようになった。
31:49 そこはまた、ミツパ（見張り所）とも呼ばれた。「我々が互いに離れているときも、主がお前とわたしの間を見張ってくださるように。
31:50 もし、お前がわたしの娘たちを苦しめたり、わたしの娘たち以外にほかの女性をめとったりするなら、たとえ、ほかにだれもいなくても、神御自身がお前とわたしの証人であることを忘れるな」とラバンが言ったからである。
31:51 ラバンは更に、ヤコブに言った。「ここに石塚がある。またここに、わたしがお前との間に立てた記念碑がある。
31:52 この石塚は証拠であり、記念碑は証人だ。敵意をもって、わたしがこの石塚を越えてお前の方に侵入したり、お前がこの石塚とこの記念碑を越えてわたしの方に侵入したりすることがないようにしよう。
31:53 どうか、アブラハムの神とナホルの神、彼らの先祖の神が我々の間を正しく裁いてくださいますように。」ヤコブも、父イサクの畏れ敬う方にかけて誓った。
31:54 ヤコブは山の上でいけにえをささげ、一族を招いて食事を共にした。食事の後、彼らは山で一夜を過ごした。
32:1 次の朝早く、ラバンは孫や娘たちに口づけして祝福を与え、そこを去って自分の家へ帰って行った。
◆エサウとの再会の準備
32:2 ヤコブが旅を続けていると、突然、神の御使いたちが現れた。
32:3 ヤコブは彼らを見たとき、「ここは神の陣営だ」と言い、その場所をマハナイム（二組の陣営）と名付けた。
32:4 ヤコブは、あらかじめ、セイル地方、すなわちエドムの野にいる兄エサウのもとに使いの者を遣わすことにし、
32:5 お前たちはわたしの主人エサウにこう言いなさいと命じた。「あなたの僕ヤコブはこう申しております。わたしはラバンのもとに滞在し今日に至りましたが、
32:6 牛、ろば、羊、男女の奴隷を所有するようになりました。そこで、使いの者を御主人様のもとに送って御報告し、御機嫌をお伺いいたします。」
32:7 使いの者はヤコブのところに帰って来て、「兄上のエサウさまのところへ行って参りました。兄上様の方でも、あなたを迎えるため、四百人のお供を連れてこちらへおいでになる途中でございます」と報告した。
32:8 ヤコブは非常に恐れ、思い悩んだ末、連れている人々を、羊、牛、らくだなどと共に二組に分けた。
32:9 エサウがやって来て、一方の組に攻撃を仕掛けても、残りの組は助かると思ったのである。
32:10 ヤコブは祈った。「わたしの父アブラハムの神、わたしの父イサクの神、主よ、あなたはわたしにこう言われました。『あなたは生まれ故郷に帰りなさい。わたしはあなたに幸いを与える』と。
32:11 わたしは、あなたが僕に示してくださったすべての慈しみとまことを受けるに足りない者です。かつてわたしは、一本の杖を頼りにこのヨルダン川を渡りましたが、今は二組の陣営を持つまでになりました。
32:12 どうか、兄エサウの手から救ってください。わたしは兄が恐ろしいのです。兄は攻めて来て、わたしをはじめ母も子供も殺すかもしれません。
32:13 あなたは、かつてこう言われました。『わたしは必ずあなたに幸いを与え、あなたの子孫を海辺の砂のように数えきれないほど多くする』と。」
32:14 その夜、ヤコブはそこに野宿して、自分の持ち物の中から兄エサウへの贈り物を選んだ。
32:15 それは、雌山羊二百匹、雄山羊二十匹、雌羊二百匹、雄羊二十匹、
32:16 乳らくだ三十頭とその子供、雌牛四十頭、雄牛十頭、雌ろば二十頭、雄ろば十頭であった。
32:17 それを群れごとに分け、召し使いたちの手に渡して言った。「群れと群れとの間に距離を置き、わたしの先に立って行きなさい。」
32:18 また、先頭を行く者には次のように命じた。「兄のエサウがお前に出会って、『お前の主人は誰だ。どこへ行くのか。ここにいる家畜は誰のものだ』と尋ねたら、
32:19 こう言いなさい。『これは、あなたさまの僕ヤコブのもので、御主人のエサウさまに差し上げる贈り物でございます。ヤコブも後から参ります』と。」
32:20 ヤコブは、二番目の者にも、三番目の者にも、群れの後について行くすべての者に命じて言った。「エサウに出会ったら、これと同じことを述べ、
32:21 『あなたさまの僕ヤコブも後から参ります』と言いなさい。」ヤコブは、贈り物を先に行かせて兄をなだめ、その後で顔を合わせれば、恐らく快く迎えてくれるだろうと思ったのである。
32:22 こうして、贈り物を先に行かせ、ヤコブ自身は、その夜、野営地にとどまった。
◆ペヌエルでの格闘
32:23 その夜、ヤコブは起きて、二人の妻と二人の側女、それに十一人の子供を連れてヤボクの渡しを渡った。
32:24 皆を導いて川を渡らせ、持ち物も渡してしまうと、
32:25 ヤコブは独り後に残った。そのとき、何者かが夜明けまでヤコブと格闘した。
32:26 ところが、その人はヤコブに勝てないとみて、ヤコブの腿の関節を打ったので、格闘をしているうちに腿の関節がはずれた。
32:27 「もう去らせてくれ。夜が明けてしまうから」とその人は言ったが、ヤコブは答えた。「いいえ、祝福してくださるまでは離しません。」
32:28 「お前の名は何というのか」とその人が尋ね、「ヤコブです」と答えると、
32:29 その人は言った。「お前の名はもうヤコブではなく、これからはイスラエルと呼ばれる。お前は神と人と闘って勝ったからだ。」
32:30 「どうか、あなたのお名前を教えてください」とヤコブが尋ねると、「どうして、わたしの名を尋ねるのか」と言って、ヤコブをその場で祝福した。
32:31 ヤコブは、「わたしは顔と顔とを合わせて神を見たのに、なお生きている」と言って、その場所をペヌエル（神の顔）と名付けた。
32:32 ヤコブがペヌエルを過ぎたとき、太陽は彼の上に昇った。ヤコブは腿を痛めて足を引きずっていた。
32:33 こういうわけで、イスラエルの人々は今でも腿の関節の上にある腰の筋を食べない。かの人がヤコブの腿の関節、つまり腰の筋のところを打ったからである。
◆エサウとの再会
33:1 ヤコブが目を上げると、エサウが四百人の者を引き連れて来るのが見えた。ヤコブは子供たちをそれぞれ、レアとラケルと二人の側女とに分け、
33:2 側女とその子供たちを前に、レアとその子供たちをその後に、ラケルとヨセフを最後に置いた。
33:3 ヤコブはそれから、先頭に進み出て、兄のもとに着くまでに七度地にひれ伏した。
33:4 エサウは走って来てヤコブを迎え、抱き締め、首を抱えて口づけし、共に泣いた。
33:5 やがて、エサウは顔を上げ、女たちや子供たちを見回して尋ねた。「一緒にいるこの人々は誰なのか。」「あなたの僕であるわたしに、神が恵んでくださった子供たちです。」ヤコブが答えると、
33:6 側女たちが子供たちと共に進み出てひれ伏し、
33:7 次に、レアが子供たちと共に進み出てひれ伏し、最後に、ヨセフとラケルが進み出てひれ伏した。
33:8 エサウは尋ねた。「今、わたしが出会ったあの多くの家畜は何のつもりか。」ヤコブが、「御主人様の好意を得るためです」と答えると、
33:9 エサウは言った。「弟よ、わたしのところには何でも十分ある。お前のものはお前が持っていなさい。」
33:10 ヤコブは言った。「いいえ。もし御好意をいただけるのであれば、どうぞ贈り物をお受け取りください。兄上のお顔は、わたしには神の御顔のように見えます。このわたしを温かく迎えてくださったのですから。
33:11 どうか、持参しました贈り物をお納めください。神がわたしに恵みをお与えになったので、わたしは何でも持っていますから。」ヤコブがしきりに勧めたので、エサウは受け取った。
33:12 それからエサウは言った。「さあ、一緒に出かけよう。わたしが先導するから。」
33:13 「御主人様。ご存じのように、子供たちはか弱く、わたしも羊や牛の子に乳を飲ませる世話をしなければなりません。群れは、一日でも無理に追い立てるとみな死んでしまいます。
33:14 どうか御主人様、僕におかまいなく先にお進みください。わたしは、ここにいる家畜や子供たちの歩みに合わせてゆっくり進み、セイルの御主人様のもとへ参りましょう。」ヤコブがこう答えたので、
33:15 エサウは言った。「では、わたしが連れている者を何人か、お前のところに残しておくことにしよう。」「いいえ。それには及びません。御好意だけで十分です」と答えたので、
33:16 エサウは、その日セイルへの道を帰って行った。
33:17 ヤコブはスコトへ行き、自分の家を建て、家畜の小屋を作った。そこで、その場所の名はスコト（小屋）と呼ばれている。
33:18 ヤコブはこうして、パダン・アラムから無事にカナン地方にあるシケムの町に着き、町のそばに宿営した。
33:19 ヤコブは、天幕を張った土地の一部を、シケムの父ハモルの息子たちから百ケシタで買い取り、
33:20 そこに祭壇を建てて、それをエル・エロヘ・イスラエルと呼んだ。
◆シケムでの出来事
34:1 あるとき、レアとヤコブとの間に生まれた娘のディナが土地の娘たちに会いに出かけたが、
34:2 その土地の首長であるヒビ人ハモルの息子シケムが彼女を見かけて捕らえ、共に寝て辱めた。
34:3 シケムはヤコブの娘ディナに心を奪われ、この若い娘を愛し、言い寄った。
34:4 更にシケムは、父ハモルに言った。「どうか、この娘と結婚させてください。」
34:5 ヤコブは、娘のディナが汚されたことを聞いたが、息子たちは家畜を連れて野に出ていたので、彼らが帰るまで黙っていた。
34:6 シケムの父ハモルがヤコブと話し合うためにやって来たとき、
34:7 ヤコブの息子たちが野から帰って来てこの事を聞き、皆、互いに嘆き、また激しく憤った。シケムがヤコブの娘と寝て、イスラエルに対して恥ずべきことを行ったからである。それはしてはならないことであった。
34:8 ハモルは彼らと話した。「息子のシケムは、あなたがたの娘さんを恋い慕っています。どうか、娘さんを息子の嫁にしてください。
34:9 お互いに姻戚関係を結び、あなたがたの娘さんたちをわたしどもにくださり、わたしどもの娘を嫁にしてくださいませんか。
34:10 そして、わたしどもと一緒に住んでください。あなたがたのための土地も十分あります。どうか、ここに移り住んで、自由に使ってください。」
34:11 シケムも、ディナの父や兄弟たちに言った。「ぜひとも、よろしくお願いします。お申し出があれば何でも差し上げます。
34:12 どんなに高い結納金でも贈り物でも、お望みどおりに差し上げます。ですから、ぜひあの方をわたしの妻にください。」
34:13 しかし、シケムが妹のディナを汚したので、ヤコブの息子たちは、シケムとその父ハモルをだましてこう答えた。
34:14 「割礼を受けていない男に、妹を妻として与えることはできません。そのようなことは我々の恥とするところです。
34:15 ただ、次の条件がかなえられれば、あなたたちに同意しましょう。それは、あなたたちの男性が皆、割礼を受けて我々と同じようになることです。
34:16 そうすれば、我々の娘たちをあなたたちに与え、あなたたちの娘を我々がめとります。そして我々は、あなたたちと一緒に住んで一つの民となります。
34:17 しかし、もし割礼を受けることに同意しないなら、我々は娘を連れてここを立ち去ることにします。」
34:18 ハモルとその息子シケムは、この条件なら受け入れてもよいと思った。
34:19 とくにシケムは、ヤコブの娘を愛していたので、ためらわず実行することにした。彼は、ハモル家の中では最も尊敬されていた。
34:20 ハモルと息子シケムは、町の門のところへ行き町の人々に提案した。
34:21 「あの人たちは、我々と仲良くやっていける人たちだ。彼らをここに住まわせ、この土地を自由に使ってもらうことにしようではないか。土地は御覧のとおり十分広いから、彼らが来ても大丈夫だ。そして、彼らの娘たちを我々の嫁として迎え、我々の娘たちを彼らに与えようではないか。
34:22 ただ、次の条件がかなえられれば、あの人たちは我々と一緒に住み、一つの民となることに同意するというのだ。それは、彼らが割礼を受けているように、我々も男性は皆、割礼を受けることだ。
34:23 そうすれば、彼らの家畜の群れも財産も動物もみな、我々のものになるではないか。それには、ただ彼らの条件に同意さえすれば、彼らは我々と一緒に住むことができるのだ。」
34:24 町の門のところに集まっていた人々は皆、ハモルと息子シケムの提案を受け入れた。町の門のところに集まっていた男性はこうして、すべて割礼を受けた。
34:25 三日目になって、男たちがまだ傷の痛みに苦しんでいたとき、ヤコブの二人の息子、つまりディナの兄のシメオンとレビは、めいめい剣を取って難なく町に入り、男たちをことごとく殺した。
34:26 ハモルと息子シケムも剣にかけて殺し、シケムの家からディナを連れ出した。
34:27 ヤコブの息子たちは、倒れている者たちに襲いかかり、更に町中を略奪した。自分たちの妹を汚したからである。
34:28 そして、羊や牛やろばなど、町の中のものも野にあるものも奪い取り、
34:29 家の中にあるものもみな奪い、女も子供もすべて捕虜にした。
34:30 「困ったことをしてくれたものだ。わたしはこの土地に住むカナン人やペリジ人の憎まれ者になり、のけ者になってしまった。こちらは少人数なのだから、彼らが集まって攻撃してきたら、わたしも家族も滅ぼされてしまうではないか」とヤコブがシメオンとレビに言うと、
34:31 二人はこう言い返した。「わたしたちの妹が娼婦のように扱われてもかまわないのですか。」
◆再びベテルへ
35:1 神はヤコブに言われた。「さあ、ベテルに上り、そこに住みなさい。そしてその地に、あなたが兄エサウを避けて逃げて行ったとき、あなたに現れた神のための祭壇を造りなさい。」
35:2 ヤコブは、家族の者や一緒にいるすべての人々に言った。「お前たちが身に着けている外国の神々を取り去り、身を清めて衣服を着替えなさい。
35:3 さあ、これからベテルに上ろう。わたしはその地に、苦難の時わたしに答え、旅の間わたしと共にいてくださった神のために祭壇を造る。」
35:4 人々は、持っていた外国のすべての神々と、着けていた耳飾りをヤコブに渡したので、ヤコブはそれらをシケムの近くにある樫の木の下に埋めた。
35:5 こうして一同は出発したが、神が周囲の町々を恐れさせたので、ヤコブの息子たちを追跡する者はなかった。
35:6 ヤコブはやがて、一族の者すべてと共に、カナン地方のルズ、すなわちベテルに着き、
35:7 そこに祭壇を築いて、その場所をエル・ベテルと名付けた。兄を避けて逃げて行ったとき、神がそこでヤコブに現れたからである。
35:8 リベカの乳母デボラが死に、ベテルの下手にある樫の木の下に葬られた。そこで、その名はアロン・バクト（嘆きの樫の木）と呼ばれるようになった。
35:9 ヤコブがパダン・アラムから帰って来たとき、神は再びヤコブに現れて彼を祝福された。
35:10 神は彼に言われた。「あなたの名はヤコブである。しかし、あなたの名はもはやヤコブと呼ばれない。イスラエルがあなたの名となる。」神はこうして、彼をイスラエルと名付けられた。
35:11 神は、また彼に言われた。「わたしは全能の神である。産めよ、増えよ。あなたから／一つの国民、いや多くの国民の群れが起こり／あなたの腰から王たちが出る。
35:12 わたしは、アブラハムとイサクに与えた土地を／あなたに与える。また、あなたに続く子孫にこの土地を与える。」
35:13 神はヤコブと語られた場所を離れて昇って行かれた。
35:14 ヤコブは、神が自分と語られた場所に記念碑を立てた。それは石の柱で、彼はその上にぶどう酒を注ぎかけ、また油を注いだ。
35:15 そしてヤコブは、神が自分と語られた場所をベテルと名付けた。
◆ラケルの死
35:16 一同がベテルを出発し、エフラタまで行くにはまだかなりの道のりがあるときに、ラケルが産気づいたが、難産であった。
35:17 ラケルが産みの苦しみをしているとき、助産婦は彼女に、「心配ありません。今度も男の子ですよ」と言った。
35:18 ラケルが最後の息を引き取ろうとするとき、その子をベン・オニ（わたしの苦しみの子）と名付けたが、父はこれをベニヤミン（幸いの子）と呼んだ。
35:19 ラケルは死んで、エフラタ、すなわち今日のベツレヘムへ向かう道の傍らに葬られた。
35:20 ヤコブは、彼女の葬られた所に記念碑を立てた。それは、ラケルの葬りの碑として今でも残っている。
35:21 イスラエルは更に旅を続け、ミグダル・エデルを過ぎた所に天幕を張った。
35:22 イスラエルがそこに滞在していたとき、ルベンは父の側女ビルハのところへ入って寝た。このことはイスラエルの耳にも入った。
◆ヤコブの息子たち
35:22 ヤコブの息子は十二人であった。
35:23 レアの息子がヤコブの長男ルベン、それからシメオン、レビ、ユダ、イサカル、ゼブルン、
35:24 ラケルの息子がヨセフとベニヤミン、
35:25 ラケルの召し使いビルハの息子がダンとナフタリ、
35:26 レアの召し使いジルパの息子がガドとアシェルである。これらは、パダン・アラムで生まれたヤコブの息子たちである。
◆イサクの死
35:27 ヤコブは、キルヤト・アルバ、すなわちヘブロンのマムレにいる父イサクのところへ行った。そこは、イサクだけでなく、アブラハムも滞在していた所である。
35:28 イサクの生涯は百八十年であった。
35:29 イサクは息を引き取り、高齢のうちに満ち足りて死に、先祖の列に加えられた。息子のエサウとヤコブが彼を葬った。
◆エサウの子孫
36:1 エサウ、すなわちエドムの系図は次のとおりである。
36:2 エサウは、カナンの娘たちの中から妻を迎えた。ヘト人エロンの娘アダ、ヒビ人ツィブオンの孫娘でアナの娘オホリバマ、
36:3 それに、ネバヨトの姉妹でイシュマエルの娘バセマトである。
36:4 アダは、エサウとの間にエリファズを産み、バセマトはレウエルを産んだ。
36:5 オホリバマは、エウシュ、ヤラム、コラを産んだ。これらは、カナン地方で生まれたエサウの息子たちである。
36:6 エサウは、妻、息子、娘、家で働くすべての人々、家畜の群れ、すべての動物を連れ、カナンの土地で手に入れた全財産を携え、弟ヤコブのところから離れてほかの土地へ出て行った。
36:7 彼らの所有物は一緒に住むにはあまりにも多く、滞在していた土地は彼らの家畜を養うには狭すぎたからである。
36:8 エサウはこうして、セイルの山地に住むようになった。エサウとはエドムのことである。
36:9 セイルの山地に住む、エドム人の先祖エサウの系図は次のとおりである。
36:10 まず、エサウの息子たちの名前を挙げると、エリファズはエサウの妻アダの子で、レウエルはエサウの妻バセマトの子である。
36:11 エリファズの息子たちは、テマン、オマル、ツェフォ、ガタム、ケナズである。
36:12 エサウの息子エリファズの側女ティムナは、エリファズとの間にアマレクを産んだ。以上が、エサウの妻アダの子孫である。
36:13 レウエルの息子たちは、ナハト、ゼラ、シャンマ、ミザである。以上が、エサウの妻バセマトの子孫である。
36:14 ツィブオンの孫娘で、アナの娘であるエサウの妻オホリバマの息子たちは、次のとおりである。彼女は、エサウとの間にエウシュ、ヤラム、コラを産んだ。
36:15 エサウの子孫である首長は次のとおりである。まず、エサウの長男エリファズの息子たちについていえば、首長テマン、首長オマル、首長ツェフォ、首長ケナズ、
36:16 首長コラ、首長ガタム、首長アマレクである。これらは、エドム地方に住むエリファズ系の首長で、アダの子孫である。
36:17 次に、エサウの子レウエルの息子たちについていえば、首長ナハト、首長ゼラ、首長シャンマ、首長ミザである。これらは、エドム地方に住むレウエル系の首長で、エサウの妻バセマトの子孫である。
36:18 エサウの妻オホリバマの息子たちについていえば、首長エウシュ、首長ヤラム、首長コラである。これらは、アナの娘であるエサウの妻オホリバマから生まれた首長である。
36:19 以上が、エサウ、すなわちエドムの子孫である首長たちである。
◆セイルの子孫
36:20 この土地に住むフリ人セイルの息子たちは、ロタン、ショバル、ツィブオン、アナ、
36:21 ディション、エツェル、ディシャンである。これらは、エドム地方に住むセイルの息子で、フリ人の首長たちである。
36:22 ロタンの息子たちは、ホリとヘマムであり、ロタンの妹がティムナである。
36:23 ショバルの息子たちは、アルワン、マナハト、エバル、シェフォ、オナムである。
36:24 ツィブオンの息子たちは、アヤとアナである。アナは父ツィブオンのろばを飼っていたとき、荒れ野で泉を発見した人である。
36:25 アナの子供たちは、ディションとアナの娘オホリバマである。
36:26 ディションの息子たちは、ヘムダン、エシュバン、イトラン、ケランである。
36:27 エツェルの息子たちは、ビルハン、ザアワン、アカンである。
36:28 ディシャンの息子たちは、ウツとアランである。
36:29 フリ人の首長は次のとおりである。首長ロタン、首長ショバル、首長ツィブオン、首長アナ、
36:30 首長ディション、首長エツェル、首長ディシャン。以上がフリ人の首長であり、セイル地方に住むそれぞれの首長であった。
◆エドムの王国
36:31 イスラエルの人々を治める王がまだいなかった時代に、エドム地方を治めていた王たちは次のとおりである。
36:32 エドムで治めていたのは、ベオルの息子ベラであり、その町の名はディンハバといった。
36:33 ベラが死んで、代わりに王となったのは、ボツラ出身でゼラの息子ヨバブである。
36:34 ヨバブが死んで、代わりに王となったのは、テマン人の土地から出たフシャムである。
36:35 フシャムが死んで代わりに王となったのは、ベダドの息子ハダドであり、モアブの野でミディアン人を撃退した人である。その町の名はアビトといった。
36:36 ハダドが死んで代わりに王となったのは、マスレカ出身のサムラである。
36:37 サムラが死んで代わりに王となったのは、ユーフラテス川のレホボト出身のシャウルである。
36:38 シャウルが死んで、代わりに王となったのは、アクボルの息子バアル・ハナンである。
36:39 アクボルの息子バアル・ハナンが死んで代わりに王となったのは、ハダドである。その町の名はパウといい、その妻の名はメヘタブエルといった。彼女はマトレドの娘で、メ・ザハブの孫娘である。
36:40 エサウ系の首長たちの名前を氏族と場所の名に従って挙げれば、首長ティムナ、首長アルワ、首長エテト、
36:41 首長オホリバマ、首長エラ、首長ピノン、
36:42 首長ケナズ、首長テマン、首長ミブツァル、
36:43 首長マグディエル、首長イラムである。以上がエドムの首長であって、彼らが所有した領地に従って挙げたものである。エサウは、エドム人の先祖である。
◆ヨセフの夢
37:1 ヤコブは、父がかつて滞在していたカナン地方に住んでいた。
37:2 ヤコブの家族の由来は次のとおりである。ヨセフは十七歳のとき、兄たちと羊の群れを飼っていた。まだ若く、父の側女ビルハやジルパの子供たちと一緒にいた。ヨセフは兄たちのことを父に告げ口した。
37:3 イスラエルは、ヨセフが年寄り子であったので、どの息子よりもかわいがり、彼には裾の長い晴れ着を作ってやった。
37:4 兄たちは、父がどの兄弟よりもヨセフをかわいがるのを見て、ヨセフを憎み、穏やかに話すこともできなかった。
37:5 ヨセフは夢を見て、それを兄たちに語ったので、彼らはますます憎むようになった。
37:6 ヨセフは言った。「聞いてください。わたしはこんな夢を見ました。
37:7 畑でわたしたちが束を結わえていると、いきなりわたしの束が起き上がり、まっすぐに立ったのです。すると、兄さんたちの束が周りに集まって来て、わたしの束にひれ伏しました。」
37:8 兄たちはヨセフに言った。「なに、お前が我々の王になるというのか。お前が我々を支配するというのか。」兄たちは夢とその言葉のために、ヨセフをますます憎んだ。
37:9 ヨセフはまた別の夢を見て、それを兄たちに話した。「わたしはまた夢を見ました。太陽と月と十一の星がわたしにひれ伏しているのです。」
37:10 今度は兄たちだけでなく、父にも話した。父はヨセフを叱って言った。「一体どういうことだ、お前が見たその夢は。わたしもお母さんも兄さんたちも、お前の前に行って、地面にひれ伏すというのか。」
37:11 兄たちはヨセフをねたんだが、父はこのことを心に留めた。
◆ヨセフ、エジプトに売られる
37:12 兄たちが出かけて行き、シケムで父の羊の群れを飼っていたとき、
37:13 イスラエルはヨセフに言った。「兄さんたちはシケムで羊を飼っているはずだ。お前を彼らのところへやりたいのだが。」「はい、分かりました」とヨセフが答えると、
37:14 更にこう言った。「では、早速出かけて、兄さんたちが元気にやっているか、羊の群れも無事か見届けて、様子を知らせてくれないか。」父はヨセフをヘブロンの谷から送り出した。ヨセフがシケムに着き、
37:15 野原をさまよっていると、一人の人に出会った。その人はヨセフに尋ねた。「何を探しているのかね。」
37:16 「兄たちを探しているのです。どこで羊の群れを飼っているか教えてください。」ヨセフがこう言うと、
37:17 その人は答えた。「もうここをたってしまった。ドタンへ行こう、と言っていたのを聞いたが。」ヨセフは兄たちの後を追って行き、ドタンで一行を見つけた。
37:18 兄たちは、はるか遠くの方にヨセフの姿を認めると、まだ近づいて来ないうちに、ヨセフを殺してしまおうとたくらみ、
37:19 相談した。「おい、向こうから例の夢見るお方がやって来る。
37:20 さあ、今だ。あれを殺して、穴の一つに投げ込もう。後は、野獣に食われたと言えばよい。あれの夢がどうなるか、見てやろう。」
37:21 ルベンはこれを聞いて、ヨセフを彼らの手から助け出そうとして、言った。「命まで取るのはよそう。」
37:22 ルベンは続けて言った。「血を流してはならない。荒れ野のこの穴に投げ入れよう。手を下してはならない。」ルベンは、ヨセフを彼らの手から助け出して、父のもとへ帰したかったのである。
37:23 ヨセフがやって来ると、兄たちはヨセフが着ていた着物、裾の長い晴れ着をはぎ取り、
37:24 彼を捕らえて、穴に投げ込んだ。その穴は空で水はなかった。
37:25 彼らはそれから、腰を下ろして食事を始めたが、ふと目を上げると、イシュマエル人の隊商がギレアドの方からやって来るのが見えた。らくだに樹脂、乳香、没薬を積んで、エジプトに下って行こうとしているところであった。
37:26 ユダは兄弟たちに言った。「弟を殺して、その血を覆っても、何の得にもならない。
37:27 それより、あのイシュマエル人に売ろうではないか。弟に手をかけるのはよそう。あれだって、肉親の弟だから。」兄弟たちは、これを聞き入れた。
37:28 ところが、その間にミディアン人の商人たちが通りかかって、ヨセフを穴から引き上げ、銀二十枚でイシュマエル人に売ったので、彼らはヨセフをエジプトに連れて行ってしまった。
37:29 ルベンが穴のところに戻ってみると、意外にも穴の中にヨセフはいなかった。ルベンは自分の衣を引き裂き、
37:30 兄弟たちのところへ帰り、「あの子がいない。わたしは、このわたしは、どうしたらいいのか」と言った。
37:31 兄弟たちはヨセフの着物を拾い上げ、雄山羊を殺してその血に着物を浸した。
37:32 彼らはそれから、裾の長い晴れ着を父のもとへ送り届け、「これを見つけましたが、あなたの息子の着物かどうか、お調べになってください」と言わせた。
37:33 父は、それを調べて言った。「あの子の着物だ。野獣に食われたのだ。ああ、ヨセフはかみ裂かれてしまったのだ。」
37:34 ヤコブは自分の衣を引き裂き、粗布を腰にまとい、幾日もその子のために嘆き悲しんだ。
37:35 息子や娘たちが皆やって来て、慰めようとしたが、ヤコブは慰められることを拒んだ。「ああ、わたしもあの子のところへ、嘆きながら陰府へ下って行こう。」父はこう言って、ヨセフのために泣いた。
37:36 一方、メダンの人たちがエジプトへ売ったヨセフは、ファラオの宮廷の役人で、侍従長であったポティファルのものとなった。
◆ユダとタマル
38:1 そのころ、ユダは兄弟たちと別れて、アドラム人のヒラという人の近くに天幕を張った。
38:2 ユダはそこで、カナン人のシュアという人の娘を見初めて結婚し、彼女のところに入った。
38:3 彼女は身ごもり男の子を産んだ。ユダはその子をエルと名付けた。
38:4 彼女はまた身ごもり男の子を産み、その子をオナンと名付けた。
38:5 彼女は更にまた男の子を産み、その子をシェラと名付けた。彼女がシェラを産んだとき、ユダはケジブにいた。
38:6 ユダは長男のエルに、タマルという嫁を迎えたが、
38:7 ユダの長男エルは主の意に反したので、主は彼を殺された。
38:8 ユダはオナンに言った。「兄嫁のところに入り、兄弟の義務を果たし、兄のために子孫をのこしなさい。」
38:9 オナンはその子孫が自分のものとならないのを知っていたので、兄に子孫を与えないように、兄嫁のところに入る度に子種を地面に流した。
38:10 彼のしたことは主の意に反することであったので、彼もまた殺された。
38:11 ユダは嫁のタマルに言った。「わたしの息子のシェラが成人するまで、あなたは父上の家で、やもめのまま暮らしていなさい。」それは、シェラもまた兄たちのように死んではいけないと思ったからであった。タマルは自分の父の家に帰って暮らした。
38:12 かなりの年月がたって、シュアの娘であったユダの妻が死んだ。ユダは喪に服した後、友人のアドラム人ヒラと一緒に、ティムナの羊の毛を切る者のところへ上って行った。
38:13 ある人がタマルに、「あなたのしゅうとが、羊の毛を切るために、ティムナへやって来ます」と知らせたので、
38:14 タマルはやもめの着物を脱ぎ、ベールをかぶって身なりを変え、ティムナへ行く途中のエナイムの入り口に座った。シェラが成人したのに、自分がその妻にしてもらえない、と分かったからである。
38:15 ユダは彼女を見て、顔を隠しているので娼婦だと思った。
38:16 ユダは、路傍にいる彼女に近寄って、「さあ、あなたの所に入らせてくれ」と言った。彼女が自分の嫁だとは気づかなかったからである。「わたしの所にお入りになるのなら、何をくださいますか」と彼女が言うと、
38:17 ユダは、「群れの中から子山羊を一匹、送り届けよう」と答えた。しかし彼女は言った。「でも、それを送り届けてくださるまで、保証の品をください。」
38:18 「どんな保証がいいのか」と言うと、彼女は答えた。「あなたのひもの付いた印章と、持っていらっしゃるその杖です。」ユダはそれを渡し、彼女の所に入った。彼女はこうして、ユダによって身ごもった。
38:19 彼女はそこを立ち去り、ベールを脱いで、再びやもめの着物を着た。
38:20 ユダは子山羊を友人のアドラム人の手に託して送り届け、女から保証の品を取り戻そうとしたが、その女は見つからなかった。
38:21 友人が土地の人々に、「エナイムの路傍にいた神殿娼婦は、どこにいるでしょうか」と尋ねると、人々は、「ここには、神殿娼婦などいたことはありません」と答えた。
38:22 友人はユダのところに戻って来て言った。「女は見つかりませんでした。それに土地の人々も、『ここには、神殿娼婦などいたことはありません』と言うのです。」
38:23 ユダは言った。「では、あの品はあの女にそのままやっておこう。さもないと、我々が物笑いの種になるから。とにかく、わたしは子山羊を届けたのだが、女が見つからなかったのだから。」
38:24 三か月ほどたって、「あなたの嫁タマルは姦淫をし、しかも、姦淫によって身ごもりました」とユダに告げる者があったので、ユダは言った。「あの女を引きずり出して、焼き殺してしまえ。」
38:25 ところが、引きずり出されようとしたとき、タマルはしゅうとに使いをやって言った。「わたしは、この品々の持ち主によって身ごもったのです。」彼女は続けて言った。「どうか、このひもの付いた印章とこの杖とが、どなたのものか、お調べください。」
38:26 ユダは調べて言った。「わたしよりも彼女の方が正しい。わたしが彼女を息子のシェラに与えなかったからだ。」ユダは、再びタマルを知ることはなかった。
38:27 タマルの出産の時が来たが、胎内には双子がいた。
38:28 出産の時、一人の子が手を出したので、助産婦は、「これが先に出た」と言い、真っ赤な糸を取ってその手に結んだ。
38:29 ところがその子は手を引っ込めてしまい、もう一人の方が出てきたので、助産婦は言った。「なんとまあ、この子は人を出し抜いたりして。」そこで、この子はペレツ（出し抜き）と名付けられた。
38:30 その後から、手に真っ赤な糸を結んだ方の子が出てきたので、この子はゼラ（真っ赤）と名付けられた。
◆ヨセフとポティファルの妻
39:1 ヨセフはエジプトに連れて来られた。ヨセフをエジプトへ連れて来たイシュマエル人の手から彼を買い取ったのは、ファラオの宮廷の役人で、侍従長のエジプト人ポティファルであった。
39:2 主がヨセフと共におられたので、彼はうまく事を運んだ。彼はエジプト人の主人の家にいた。
39:3 主が共におられ、主が彼のすることをすべてうまく計らわれるのを見た主人は、
39:4 ヨセフに目をかけて身近に仕えさせ、家の管理をゆだね、財産をすべて彼の手に任せた。
39:5 主人が家の管理やすべての財産をヨセフに任せてから、主はヨセフのゆえにそのエジプト人の家を祝福された。主の祝福は、家の中にも農地にも、すべての財産に及んだ。
39:6 主人は全財産をヨセフの手にゆだねてしまい、自分が食べるもの以外は全く気を遣わなかった。ヨセフは顔も美しく、体つきも優れていた。
39:7 これらのことの後で、主人の妻はヨセフに目を注ぎながら言った。「わたしの床に入りなさい。」
39:8 しかし、ヨセフは拒んで、主人の妻に言った。「ご存じのように、御主人はわたしを側に置き、家の中のことには一切気をお遣いになりません。財産もすべてわたしの手にゆだねてくださいました。
39:9 この家では、わたしの上に立つ者はいませんから、わたしの意のままにならないものもありません。ただ、あなたは別です。あなたは御主人の妻ですから。わたしは、どうしてそのように大きな悪を働いて、神に罪を犯すことができましょう。」
39:10 彼女は毎日ヨセフに言い寄ったが、ヨセフは耳を貸さず、彼女の傍らに寝ることも、共にいることもしなかった。
39:11 こうして、ある日、ヨセフが仕事をしようと家に入ると、家の者が一人も家の中にいなかったので、
39:12 彼女はヨセフの着物をつかんで言った。「わたしの床に入りなさい。」ヨセフは着物を彼女の手に残し、逃げて外へ出た。
39:13 着物を彼女の手に残したまま、ヨセフが外へ逃げたのを見ると、
39:14 彼女は家の者たちを呼び寄せて言った。「見てごらん。ヘブライ人などをわたしたちの所に連れて来たから、わたしたちはいたずらをされる。彼がわたしの所に来て、わたしと寝ようとしたから、大声で叫びました。
39:15 わたしが大声をあげて叫んだのを聞いて、わたしの傍らに着物を残したまま外へ逃げて行きました。」
39:16 彼女は、主人が家に帰って来るまで、その着物を傍らに置いていた。
39:17 そして、主人に同じことを語った。「あなたがわたしたちの所に連れて来た、あのヘブライ人の奴隷はわたしの所に来て、いたずらをしようとしたのです。
39:18 わたしが大声をあげて叫んだものですから、着物をわたしの傍らに残したまま、外へ逃げて行きました。」
39:19 「あなたの奴隷がわたしにこんなことをしたのです」と訴える妻の言葉を聞いて、主人は怒り、
39:20 ヨセフを捕らえて、王の囚人をつなぐ監獄に入れた。ヨセフはこうして、監獄にいた。
39:21 しかし、主がヨセフと共におられ、恵みを施し、監守長の目にかなうように導かれたので、
39:22 監守長は監獄にいる囚人を皆、ヨセフの手にゆだね、獄中の人のすることはすべてヨセフが取りしきるようになった。
39:23 監守長は、ヨセフの手にゆだねたことには、一切目を配らなくてもよかった。主がヨセフと共におられ、ヨセフがすることを主がうまく計らわれたからである。
◆夢を解くヨセフ
40:1 これらのことの後で、エジプト王の給仕役と料理役が主君であるエジプト王に過ちを犯した。
40:2 ファラオは怒って、この二人の宮廷の役人、給仕役の長と料理役の長を、
40:3 侍従長の家にある牢獄、つまりヨセフがつながれている監獄に引き渡した。
40:4 侍従長は彼らをヨセフに預け、身辺の世話をさせた。牢獄の中で幾日かが過ぎたが、
40:5 監獄につながれていたエジプト王の給仕役と料理役は、二人とも同じ夜にそれぞれ夢を見た。その夢には、それぞれ意味が隠されていた。
40:6 朝になって、ヨセフが二人のところへ行ってみると、二人ともふさぎ込んでいた。
40:7 ヨセフは主人の家の牢獄に自分と一緒に入れられているファラオの宮廷の役人に尋ねた。「今日は、どうしてそんなに憂うつな顔をしているのですか。」
40:8 「我々は夢を見たのだが、それを解き明かしてくれる人がいない」と二人は答えた。ヨセフは、「解き明かしは神がなさることではありませんか。どうかわたしに話してみてください」と言った。
40:9 給仕役の長はヨセフに自分の見た夢を話した。「わたしが夢を見ていると、一本のぶどうの木が目の前に現れたのです。
40:10 そのぶどうの木には三本のつるがありました。それがみるみるうちに芽を出したかと思うと、すぐに花が咲き、ふさふさとしたぶどうが熟しました。
40:11 ファラオの杯を手にしていたわたしは、そのぶどうを取って、ファラオの杯に搾り、その杯をファラオにささげました。」
40:12 ヨセフは言った。「その解き明かしはこうです。三本のつるは三日です。
40:13 三日たてば、ファラオがあなたの頭を上げて、元の職務に復帰させてくださいます。あなたは以前、給仕役であったときのように、ファラオに杯をささげる役目をするようになります。
40:14 ついては、あなたがそのように幸せになられたときには、どうかわたしのことを思い出してください。わたしのためにファラオにわたしの身の上を話し、この家から出られるように取り計らってください。
40:15 わたしはヘブライ人の国から無理やり連れて来られたのです。また、ここでも、牢屋に入れられるようなことは何もしていないのです。」
40:16 料理役の長は、ヨセフが巧みに解き明かすのを見て言った。「わたしも夢を見ていると、編んだ籠が三個わたしの頭の上にありました。
40:17 いちばん上の籠には、料理役がファラオのために調えたいろいろな料理が入っていましたが、鳥がわたしの頭の上の籠からそれを食べているのです。」
40:18 ヨセフは答えた。「その解き明かしはこうです。三個の籠は三日です。
40:19 三日たてば、ファラオがあなたの頭を上げて切り離し、あなたを木にかけます。そして、鳥があなたの肉をついばみます。」
40:20 三日目はファラオの誕生日であったので、ファラオは家来たちを皆、招いて、祝宴を催した。そして、家来たちの居並ぶところで例の給仕役の長の頭と料理役の長の頭を上げて調べた。
40:21 ファラオは給仕役の長を給仕の職に復帰させたので、彼はファラオに杯をささげる役目をするようになったが、
40:22 料理役の長は、ヨセフが解き明かしたとおり木にかけられた。
40:23 ところが、給仕役の長はヨセフのことを思い出さず、忘れてしまった。
◆ファラオの夢を解く
41:1 二年の後、ファラオは夢を見た。ナイル川のほとりに立っていると、
41:2 突然、つややかな、よく肥えた七頭の雌牛が川から上がって来て、葦辺で草を食べ始めた。
41:3 すると、その後から、今度は醜い、やせ細った七頭の雌牛が川から上がって来て、岸辺にいる雌牛のそばに立った。
41:4 そして、醜い、やせ細った雌牛が、つややかな、よく肥えた七頭の雌牛を食い尽くした。ファラオは、そこで目が覚めた。
41:5 ファラオがまた眠ると、再び夢を見た。今度は、太って、よく実った七つの穂が、一本の茎から出てきた。
41:6 すると、その後から、実が入っていない、東風で干からびた七つの穂が生えてきて、
41:7 実の入っていない穂が、太って、実の入った七つの穂をのみ込んでしまった。ファラオは、そこで目が覚めた。それは夢であった。
41:8 朝になって、ファラオはひどく心が騒ぎ、エジプト中の魔術師と賢者をすべて呼び集めさせ、自分の見た夢を彼らに話した。しかし、ファラオに解き明かすことができる者はいなかった。
41:9 そのとき、例の給仕役の長がファラオに申し出た。「わたしは、今日になって自分の過ちを思い出しました。
41:10 かつてファラオが僕どもについて憤られて、侍従長の家にある牢獄にわたしと料理役の長を入れられたとき、
41:11 同じ夜に、わたしたちはそれぞれ夢を見たのですが、そのどちらにも意味が隠されていました。
41:12 そこには、侍従長に仕えていたヘブライ人の若者がおりまして、彼に話をしたところ、わたしたちの夢を解き明かし、それぞれ、その夢に応じて解き明かしたのです。
41:13 そしてまさしく、解き明かしたとおりになって、わたしは元の職務に復帰することを許され、彼は木にかけられました。」
41:14 そこで、ファラオはヨセフを呼びにやった。ヨセフは直ちに牢屋から連れ出され、散髪をし着物を着替えてから、ファラオの前に出た。
41:15 ファラオはヨセフに言った。「わたしは夢を見たのだが、それを解き明かす者がいない。聞くところによれば、お前は夢の話を聞いて、解き明かすことができるそうだが。」
41:16 ヨセフはファラオに答えた。「わたしではありません。神がファラオの幸いについて告げられるのです。」
41:17 ファラオはヨセフに話した。「夢の中で、わたしがナイル川の岸に立っていると、
41:18 突然、よく肥えて、つややかな七頭の雌牛が川から上がって来て、葦辺で草を食べ始めた。
41:19 すると、その後から、今度は貧弱で、とても醜い、やせた七頭の雌牛が上がって来た。あれほどひどいのは、エジプトでは見たことがない。
41:20 そして、そのやせた、醜い雌牛が、初めのよく肥えた七頭の雌牛を食い尽くしてしまった。
41:21 ところが、確かに腹の中に入れたのに、腹の中に入れたことがまるで分からないほど、最初と同じように醜いままなのだ。わたしは、そこで目が覚めた。
41:22 それからまた、夢の中でわたしは見たのだが、今度は、とてもよく実の入った七つの穂が一本の茎から出てきた。
41:23 すると、その後から、やせ細り、実が入っておらず、東風で干からびた七つの穂が生えてきた。
41:24 そして、実の入っていないその穂が、よく実った七つの穂をのみ込んでしまった。わたしは魔術師たちに話したが、その意味を告げうる者は一人もいなかった。」
41:25 ヨセフはファラオに言った。「ファラオの夢は、どちらも同じ意味でございます。神がこれからなさろうとしていることを、ファラオにお告げになったのです。
41:26 七頭のよく育った雌牛は七年のことです。七つのよく実った穂も七年のことです。どちらの夢も同じ意味でございます。
41:27 その後から上がって来た七頭のやせた、醜い雌牛も七年のことです。また、やせて、東風で干からびた七つの穂も同じで、これらは七年の飢饉のことです。
41:28 これは、先程ファラオに申し上げましたように、神がこれからなさろうとしていることを、ファラオにお示しになったのです。
41:29 今から七年間、エジプトの国全体に大豊作が訪れます。
41:30 しかし、その後に七年間、飢饉が続き、エジプトの国に豊作があったことなど、すっかり忘れられてしまうでしょう。飢饉が国を滅ぼしてしまうのです。
41:31 この国に豊作があったことは、その後に続く飢饉のために全く忘れられてしまうでしょう。飢饉はそれほどひどいのです。
41:32 ファラオが夢を二度も重ねて見られたのは、神がこのことを既に決定しておられ、神が間もなく実行されようとしておられるからです。
41:33 このような次第ですから、ファラオは今すぐ、聡明で知恵のある人物をお見つけになって、エジプトの国を治めさせ、
41:34 また、国中に監督官をお立てになり、豊作の七年の間、エジプトの国の産物の五分の一を徴収なさいますように。
41:35 このようにして、これから訪れる豊年の間に食糧をできるかぎり集めさせ、町々の食糧となる穀物をファラオの管理の下に蓄え、保管させるのです。
41:36 そうすれば、その食糧がエジプトの国を襲う七年の飢饉に対する国の備蓄となり、飢饉によって国が滅びることはないでしょう。」
◆ヨセフの支配
41:37 ファラオと家来たちは皆、ヨセフの言葉に感心した。
41:38 ファラオは家来たちに、「このように神の霊が宿っている人はほかにあるだろうか」と言い、
41:39 ヨセフの方を向いてファラオは言った。「神がそういうことをみな示されたからには、お前ほど聡明で知恵のある者は、ほかにはいないであろう。
41:40 お前をわが宮廷の責任者とする。わが国民は皆、お前の命に従うであろう。ただ王位にあるということでだけ、わたしはお前の上に立つ。」
41:41 ファラオはヨセフに向かって、「見よ、わたしは今、お前をエジプト全国の上に立てる」と言い、
41:42 印章のついた指輪を自分の指からはずしてヨセフの指にはめ、亜麻布の衣服を着せ、金の首飾りをヨセフの首にかけた。
41:43 ヨセフを王の第二の車に乗せると、人々はヨセフの前で、「アブレク（敬礼）」と叫んだ。ファラオはこうして、ヨセフをエジプト全国の上に立て、
41:44 ヨセフに言った。「わたしはファラオである。お前の許しなしには、このエジプト全国で、だれも、手足を上げてはならない。」
41:45 ファラオは更に、ヨセフにツァフェナト・パネアという名を与え、オンの祭司ポティ・フェラの娘アセナトを妻として与えた。ヨセフの威光はこうして、エジプトの国にあまねく及んだ。
41:46 ヨセフは、エジプトの王ファラオの前に立ったとき三十歳であった。ヨセフはファラオの前をたって、エジプト全国を巡回した。
41:47 豊作の七年の間、大地は豊かな実りに満ち溢れた。
41:48 ヨセフはその七年の間に、エジプトの国中の食糧をできるかぎり集め、その食糧を町々に蓄えさせた。町の周囲の畑にできた食糧を、その町の中に蓄えさせたのである。
41:49 ヨセフは、海辺の砂ほども多くの穀物を蓄え、ついに量りきれなくなったので、量るのをやめた。
41:50 飢饉の年がやって来る前に、ヨセフに二人の息子が生まれた。この子供を産んだのは、オンの祭司ポティ・フェラの娘アセナトである。
41:51 ヨセフは長男をマナセ（忘れさせる）と名付けて言った。「神が、わたしの苦労と父の家のことをすべて忘れさせてくださった。」
41:52 また、次男をエフライム（増やす）と名付けて言った。「神は、悩みの地で、わたしに子孫を増やしてくださった。」
41:53 エジプトの国に七年間の大豊作が終わると、
41:54 ヨセフが言ったとおり、七年の飢饉が始まった。その飢饉はすべての国々を襲ったが、エジプトには、全国どこにでも食物があった。
41:55 やがて、エジプト全国にも飢饉が広がり、民がファラオに食物を叫び求めた。ファラオはすべてのエジプト人に、「ヨセフのもとに行って、ヨセフの言うとおりにせよ」と命じた。
41:56 飢饉は世界各地に及んだ。ヨセフはすべての穀倉を開いてエジプト人に穀物を売ったが、エジプトの国の飢饉は激しくなっていった。
41:57 また、世界各地の人々も、穀物を買いにエジプトのヨセフのもとにやって来るようになった。世界各地の飢饉も激しくなったからである。
◆兄たち、エジプトへ下る
42:1 ヤコブは、エジプトに穀物があると知って、息子たちに、「どうしてお前たちは顔を見合わせてばかりいるのだ」と言い、更に、
42:2 「聞くところでは、エジプトには穀物があるというではないか。エジプトへ下って行って穀物を買ってきなさい。そうすれば、我々は死なずに生き延びることができるではないか」と言った。
42:3 そこでヨセフの十人の兄たちは、エジプトから穀物を買うために下って行った。
42:4 ヤコブはヨセフの弟ベニヤミンを兄たちに同行させなかった。何か不幸なことが彼の身に起こるといけないと思ったからであった。
42:5 イスラエルの息子たちは、他の人々に混じって穀物を買いに出かけた。カナン地方にも飢饉が襲っていたからである。
42:6 ところで、ヨセフはエジプトの司政者として、国民に穀物を販売する監督をしていた。ヨセフの兄たちは来て、地面にひれ伏し、ヨセフを拝した。
42:7 ヨセフは一目で兄たちだと気づいたが、そしらぬ振りをして厳しい口調で、「お前たちは、どこからやって来たのか」と問いかけた。彼らは答えた。「食糧を買うために、カナン地方からやって参りました。」
42:8 ヨセフは兄たちだと気づいていたが、兄たちはヨセフとは気づかなかった。
42:9 ヨセフは、そのとき、かつて兄たちについて見た夢を思い起こした。ヨセフは彼らに言った。「お前たちは回し者だ。この国の手薄な所を探りに来たにちがいない。」
42:10 彼らは答えた。「いいえ、御主君様。僕どもは食糧を買いに来ただけでございます。
42:11 わたしどもは皆、ある男の息子で、正直な人間でございます。僕どもは決して回し者などではありません。」
42:12 しかしヨセフが、「いや、お前たちはこの国の手薄な所を探りに来たにちがいない」と言うと、
42:13 彼らは答えた。「僕どもは、本当に十二人兄弟で、カナン地方に住むある男の息子たちでございます。末の弟は、今、父のもとにおりますが、もう一人は失いました。」
42:14 すると、ヨセフは言った。「お前たちは回し者だとわたしが言ったのは、そのことだ。
42:15 その点について、お前たちを試すことにする。ファラオの命にかけて言う。いちばん末の弟を、ここに来させよ。それまでは、お前たちをここから出すわけにはいかぬ。
42:16 お前たちのうち、だれか一人を行かせて、弟を連れて来い。それまでは、お前たちを監禁し、お前たちの言うことが本当かどうか試す。もしそのとおりでなかったら、ファラオの命にかけて言う。お前たちは間違いなく回し者だ。」
42:17 ヨセフは、こうして彼らを三日間、牢獄に監禁しておいた。
42:18 三日目になって、ヨセフは彼らに言った。「こうすれば、お前たちの命を助けてやろう。わたしは神を畏れる者だ。
42:19 お前たちが本当に正直な人間だというのなら、兄弟のうち一人だけを牢獄に監禁するから、ほかの者は皆、飢えているお前たちの家族のために穀物を持って帰り、
42:20 末の弟をここへ連れて来い。そうして、お前たちの言い分が確かめられたら、殺されはしない。」彼らは同意して、
42:21 互いに言った。「ああ、我々は弟のことで罰を受けているのだ。弟が我々に助けを求めたとき、あれほどの苦しみを見ながら、耳を貸そうともしなかった。それで、この苦しみが我々にふりかかった。」
42:22 すると、ルベンが答えた。「あのときわたしは、『あの子に悪いことをするな』と言ったではないか。お前たちは耳を貸そうともしなかった。だから、あの子の血の報いを受けるのだ。」
42:23 彼らはヨセフが聞いているのを知らなかった。ヨセフと兄弟たちの間に、通訳がいたからである。
42:24 ヨセフは彼らから遠ざかって泣いた。それからまた戻って来て、話をしたうえでシメオンを選び出し、彼らの見ている前で縛り上げた。
42:25 ヨセフは人々に命じて、兄たちの袋に穀物を詰め、支払った銀をめいめいの袋に返し、道中の食糧を与えるように指示し、そのとおり実行された。
42:26 彼らは穀物をろばに積んでそこを立ち去った。
42:27 途中の宿で、一人がろばに餌をやろうとして、自分の袋を開けてみると、袋の口のところに自分の銀があるのを見つけ、
42:28 ほかの兄弟たちに言った。「戻されているぞ、わたしの銀が。ほら、わたしの袋の中に。」みんなの者は驚き、互いに震えながら言った。「これは一体、どういうことだ。神が我々になさったことは。」
42:29 一行はカナン地方にいる父ヤコブのところへ帰って来て、自分たちの身に起こったことをすべて報告した。
42:30 「あの国の主君である人が、我々を厳しい口調で問い詰めて、この国を探りに来た回し者にちがいないと言うのです。
42:31 もちろん、我々は正直な人間で、決して回し者などではないと答えました。
42:32 我々が十二人兄弟で、一人の父の息子であり、一人は失いましたが、末の弟は今、カナンの地方に住む父のもとにいますと言ったところ、
42:33 あの国の主君である人が言いました。『では、お前たちが本当に正直な人間かどうかを、こうして確かめることにする。お前たち兄弟のうち、一人だけここに残し、飢えているお前たちの家族のために、穀物を持ち帰るがいい。
42:34 ただし、末の弟を必ずここへ連れて来るのだ。そうすれば、お前たちが回し者ではなく、正直な人間であることが分かるから、お前たちに兄弟を返し、自由にこの国に出入りできるようにしてやろう。』」
42:35 それから、彼らが袋を開けてみると、めいめいの袋の中にもそれぞれ自分の銀の包みが入っていた。彼らも父も、銀の包みを見て恐ろしくなった。
42:36 父ヤコブは息子たちに言った。「お前たちは、わたしから次々と子供を奪ってしまった。ヨセフを失い、シメオンも失った。その上ベニヤミンまでも取り上げるのか。みんなわたしを苦しめることばかりだ。」
42:37 ルベンは父に言った。「もしも、お父さんのところにベニヤミンを連れ帰らないようなことがあれば、わたしの二人の息子を殺してもかまいません。どうか、彼をわたしに任せてください。わたしが、必ずお父さんのところに連れ帰りますから。」
42:38 しかし、ヤコブは言った。「いや、この子だけは、お前たちと一緒に行かせるわけにはいかぬ。この子の兄は死んでしまい、残っているのは、この子だけではないか。お前たちの旅の途中で、何か不幸なことがこの子の身に起こりでもしたら、お前たちは、この白髪の父を、悲嘆のうちに陰府に下らせることになるのだ。」
◆再びエジプトへ
43:1 この地方の飢饉はひどくなる一方であった。
43:2 エジプトから持ち帰った穀物を食べ尽くすと、父は息子たちに言った。「もう一度行って、我々の食糧を少し買って来なさい。」
43:3 しかし、ユダは答えた。「あの人は、『弟が一緒でないかぎり、わたしの顔を見ることは許さぬ』と、厳しく我々に言い渡したのです。
43:4 もし弟を一緒に行かせてくださるなら、我々は下って行って、あなたのために食糧を買って参ります。
43:5 しかし、一緒に行かせてくださらないのなら、行くわけにはいきません。『弟が一緒でないかぎり、わたしの顔を見ることは許さぬ』と、あの人が我々に言ったのですから。」
43:6 「なぜお前たちは、その人にもう一人弟がいるなどと言って、わたしを苦しめるようなことをしたのか」とイスラエルが言うと、
43:7 彼らは答えた。「あの人が、我々のことや家族のことについて、『お前たちの父親は、まだ生きているのか』とか、『お前たちには、まだほかに弟がいるのか』などと、しきりに尋ねるものですから、尋ねられるままに答えただけです。まさか、『弟を連れて来い』などと言われようとは思いも寄りませんでしたから。」
43:8 ユダは、父イスラエルに言った。「あの子をぜひわたしと一緒に行かせてください。それなら、すぐにでも行って参ります。そうすれば、我々も、あなたも、子供たちも死なずに生き延びることができます。
43:9 あの子のことはわたしが保障します。その責任をわたしに負わせてください。もしも、あの子をお父さんのもとに連れ帰らず、無事な姿をお目にかけられないようなことにでもなれば、わたしがあなたに対して生涯その罪を負い続けます。
43:10 こんなにためらっていなければ、今ごろはもう二度も行って来たはずです。」
43:11 すると、父イスラエルは息子たちに言った。「どうしてもそうしなければならないのなら、こうしなさい。この土地の名産の品を袋に入れて、その人への贈り物として持って行くのだ。乳香と蜜を少し、樹脂と没薬、ピスタチオやアーモンドの実。
43:12 それから、銀を二倍用意して行きなさい。袋の口に戻されていた銀も持って行ってお返しするのだ。たぶん何かの間違いだったのだろうから。
43:13 では、弟を連れて、早速その人のところへ戻りなさい。
43:14 どうか、全能の神がその人の前でお前たちに憐れみを施し、もう一人の兄弟と、このベニヤミンを返してくださいますように。このわたしがどうしても子供を失わねばならないのなら、失ってもよい。」
43:15 息子たちは贈り物と二倍の銀を用意すると、ベニヤミンを連れて、早速エジプトへ下って行った。さて、一行がヨセフの前に進み出ると、
43:16 ヨセフはベニヤミンが一緒なのを見て、自分の家を任せている執事に言った。「この人たちを家へお連れしなさい。それから、家畜を屠って料理を調えなさい。昼の食事をこの人たちと一緒にするから。」
43:17 執事はヨセフに言われたとおりにし、一同をヨセフの屋敷へ連れて行った。
43:18 一同はヨセフの屋敷へ連れて来られたので、恐ろしくなって、「これはきっと、前に来たとき我々の袋に戻されていたあの銀のせいだ。それで、ここに連れ込まれようとしているのだ。今に、ろばもろとも捕らえられ、ひどい目に遭い、奴隷にされてしまうにちがいない」と思った。
43:19 彼らは屋敷の入り口のところでヨセフの執事の前に進み出て、話しかけて、
43:20 言った。「ああ、御主人様。実は、わたしどもは前に一度、食糧を買うためにここへ来たことがございます。
43:21 ところが、帰りに宿で袋を開けてみると、一人一人の袋の口のところにそれぞれ自分の銀が入っておりました。しかも、銀の重さは元のままでした。それで、それをお返ししなければ、と持って参りました。
43:22 もちろん、食糧を買うための銀は、別に用意してきております。一体誰がわたしどもの袋に銀を入れたのか分かりません。」
43:23 執事は、「御安心なさい。心配することはありません。きっと、あなたたちの神、あなたたちの父の神が、その宝を袋に入れてくださったのでしょう。あなたたちの銀は、このわたしが確かに受け取ったのですから」と答え、シメオンを兄弟たちのところへ連れて来た。
43:24 執事は一同をヨセフの屋敷に入れ、水を与えて足を洗わせ、ろばにも餌を与えた。
43:25 彼らは贈り物を調えて、昼にヨセフが帰宅するのを待った。一緒に食事をすることになっていると聞いたからである。
43:26 ヨセフが帰宅すると、一同は屋敷に持って来た贈り物を差し出して、地にひれ伏してヨセフを拝した。
43:27 ヨセフは一同の安否を尋ねた後、言った。「前に話していた、年をとった父上は元気か。まだ生きておられるか。」
43:28 「あなたさまの僕である父は元気で、まだ生きております」と彼らは答え、ひざまずいて、ヨセフを拝した。
43:29 ヨセフは同じ母から生まれた弟ベニヤミンをじっと見つめて、「前に話していた末の弟はこれか」と尋ね、「わたしの子よ。神の恵みがお前にあるように」と言うと、
43:30 ヨセフは急いで席を外した。弟懐かしさに、胸が熱くなり、涙がこぼれそうになったからである。ヨセフは奥の部屋に入ると泣いた。
43:31 やがて、顔を洗って出て来ると、ヨセフは平静を装い、「さあ、食事を出しなさい」と言いつけた。
43:32 食事は、ヨセフにはヨセフの、兄弟たちには兄弟たちの、相伴するエジプト人にはエジプト人のものと、別々に用意された。当時、エジプト人は、ヘブライ人と共に食事をすることはできなかったからである。それはエジプト人のいとうことであった。
43:33 兄弟たちは、いちばん上の兄から末の弟まで、ヨセフに向かって年齢順に座らされたので、驚いて互いに顔を見合わせた。
43:34 そして、料理がヨセフの前からみんなのところへ配られたが、ベニヤミンの分はほかのだれの分より五倍も多かった。一同はぶどう酒を飲み、ヨセフと共に酒宴を楽しんだ。
◆銀の杯
44:1 ヨセフは執事に命じた。「あの人たちの袋を、運べるかぎり多くの食糧でいっぱいにし、めいめいの銀をそれぞれの袋の口のところへ入れておけ。
44:2 それから、わたしの杯、あの銀の杯を、いちばん年下の者の袋の口に、穀物の代金の銀と一緒に入れておきなさい。」執事はヨセフが命じたとおりにした。
44:3 次の朝、辺りが明るくなったころ、一行は見送りを受け、ろばと共に出発した。
44:4 ところが、町を出て、まだ遠くへ行かないうちに、ヨセフは執事に命じた。「すぐに、あの人たちを追いかけ、追いついたら彼らに言いなさい。『どうして、お前たちは悪をもって善に報いるのだ。
44:5 あの銀の杯は、わたしの主人が飲むときや占いのときに、お使いになるものではないか。よくもこんな悪いことができたものだ。』」
44:6 執事は彼らに追いつくと、そのとおりに言った。
44:7 すると、彼らは言った。「御主人様、どうしてそのようなことをおっしゃるのですか。僕どもがそんなことをするなどとは、とんでもないことです。
44:8 袋の口で見つけた銀でさえ、わたしどもはカナンの地から持ち帰って、御主人様にお返ししたではありませんか。そのわたしどもがどうして、あなたの御主君のお屋敷から銀や金を盗んだりするでしょうか。
44:9 僕どもの中のだれからでも杯が見つかれば、その者は死罪に、ほかのわたしどもも皆、御主人様の奴隷になります。」
44:10 すると、執事は言った。「今度もお前たちが言うとおりならよいが。だれであっても、杯が見つかれば、その者はわたしの奴隷にならねばならない。ほかの者には罪は無い。」
44:11 彼らは急いで自分の袋を地面に降ろし、めいめいで袋を開けた。
44:12 執事が年上の者から念入りに調べ始め、いちばん最後に年下の者になったとき、ベニヤミンの袋の中から杯が見つかった。
44:13 彼らは衣を引き裂き、めいめい自分のろばに荷を積むと、町へ引き返した。
44:14 ユダと兄弟たちがヨセフの屋敷に入って行くと、ヨセフはまだそこにいた。一同は彼の前で地にひれ伏した。
44:15 「お前たちのしたこの仕業は何事か。わたしのような者は占い当てることを知らないのか」とヨセフが言うと、
44:16 ユダが答えた。「御主君に何と申し開きできましょう。今更どう言えば、わたしどもの身の証しを立てることができましょう。神が僕どもの罪を暴かれたのです。この上は、わたしどもも、杯が見つかった者と共に、御主君の奴隷になります。」
44:17 ヨセフは言った。「そんなことは全く考えていない。ただ、杯を見つけられた者だけが、わたしの奴隷になればよい。ほかのお前たちは皆、安心して父親のもとへ帰るがよい。」
◆ユダの嘆願
44:18 ユダはヨセフの前に進み出て言った。「ああ、御主君様。何とぞお怒りにならず、僕の申し上げますことに耳を傾けてください。あなたはファラオに等しいお方でいらっしゃいますから。
44:19 御主君は僕どもに向かって、『父や兄弟がいるのか』とお尋ねになりましたが、
44:20 そのとき、御主君に、『年とった父と、それに父の年寄り子である末の弟がおります。その兄は亡くなり、同じ母の子で残っているのはその子だけですから、父は彼をかわいがっております』と申し上げました。
44:21 すると、あなたさまは、『その子をここへ連れて来い。自分の目で確かめることにする』と僕どもにお命じになりました。
44:22 わたしどもは、御主君に、『あの子は、父親のもとから離れるわけにはまいりません。あの子が父親のもとを離れれば、父は死んでしまいます』と申しましたが、
44:23 あなたさまは、『その末の弟が一緒に来なければ、再びわたしの顔を見ることは許さぬ』と僕どもにおっしゃいました。
44:24 わたしどもは、あなたさまの僕である父のところへ帰り、御主君のお言葉を伝えました。
44:25 そして父が、『もう一度行って、我々の食糧を少し買って来い』と申しました折にも、
44:26 『行くことはできません。もし、末の弟が一緒なら、行って参ります。末の弟が一緒でないかぎり、あの方の顔を見ることはできないのです』と答えました。
44:27 すると、あなたさまの僕である父は、『お前たちも知っているように、わたしの妻は二人の息子を産んだ。
44:28 ところが、そのうちの一人はわたしのところから出て行ったきりだ。きっとかみ裂かれてしまったと思うが、それ以来、会っていない。
44:29 それなのに、お前たちはこの子までも、わたしから取り上げようとする。もしも、何か不幸なことがこの子の身に起こりでもしたら、お前たちはこの白髪の父を、苦しめて陰府に下らせることになるのだ』と申しました。
44:30 今わたしが、この子を一緒に連れずに、あなたさまの僕である父のところへ帰れば、父の魂はこの子の魂と堅く結ばれていますから、
44:31 この子がいないことを知って、父は死んでしまうでしょう。そして、僕どもは白髪の父を、悲嘆のうちに陰府に下らせることになるのです。
44:32 実は、この僕が父にこの子の安全を保障して、『もしも、この子をあなたのもとに連れて帰らないようなことがあれば、わたしが父に対して生涯その罪を負い続けます』と言ったのです。
44:33 何とぞ、この子の代わりに、この僕を御主君の奴隷としてここに残し、この子はほかの兄弟たちと一緒に帰らせてください。
44:34 この子を一緒に連れずに、どうしてわたしは父のもとへ帰ることができましょう。父に襲いかかる苦悶を見るに忍びません。」
◆ヨセフ、身を明かす
45:1 ヨセフは、そばで仕えている者の前で、もはや平静を装っていることができなくなり、「みんな、ここから出て行ってくれ」と叫んだ。だれもそばにいなくなってから、ヨセフは兄弟たちに自分の身を明かした。
45:2 ヨセフは、声をあげて泣いたので、エジプト人はそれを聞き、ファラオの宮廷にも伝わった。
45:3 ヨセフは、兄弟たちに言った。「わたしはヨセフです。お父さんはまだ生きておられますか。」兄弟たちはヨセフの前で驚きのあまり、答えることができなかった。
45:4 ヨセフは兄弟たちに言った。「どうか、もっと近寄ってください。」兄弟たちがそばへ近づくと、ヨセフはまた言った。「わたしはあなたたちがエジプトへ売った弟のヨセフです。
45:5 しかし、今は、わたしをここへ売ったことを悔やんだり、責め合ったりする必要はありません。命を救うために、神がわたしをあなたたちより先にお遣わしになったのです。
45:6 この二年の間、世界中に飢饉が襲っていますが、まだこれから五年間は、耕すこともなく、収穫もないでしょう。
45:7 神がわたしをあなたたちより先にお遣わしになったのは、この国にあなたたちの残りの者を与え、あなたたちを生き永らえさせて、大いなる救いに至らせるためです。
45:8 わたしをここへ遣わしたのは、あなたたちではなく、神です。神がわたしをファラオの顧問、宮廷全体の主、エジプト全国を治める者としてくださったのです。
45:9 急いで父上のもとへ帰って、伝えてください。『息子のヨセフがこう言っています。神が、わたしを全エジプトの主としてくださいました。ためらわずに、わたしのところへおいでください。
45:10 そして、ゴシェンの地域に住んでください。そうすればあなたも、息子も孫も、羊や牛の群れも、そのほかすべてのものも、わたしの近くで暮らすことができます。
45:11 そこでのお世話は、わたしがお引き受けいたします。まだ五年間は飢饉が続くのですから、父上も家族も、そのほかすべてのものも、困ることのないようになさらなければいけません。』
45:12 さあ、お兄さんたちも、弟のベニヤミンも、自分の目で見てください。ほかならぬわたしがあなたたちに言っているのです。
45:13 エジプトでわたしが受けているすべての栄誉と、あなたたちが見たすべてのことを父上に話してください。そして、急いで父上をここへ連れて来てください。」
45:14 ヨセフは、弟ベニヤミンの首を抱いて泣いた。ベニヤミンもヨセフの首を抱いて泣いた。
45:15 ヨセフは兄弟たち皆に口づけし、彼らを抱いて泣いた。その後、兄弟たちはヨセフと語り合った。
45:16 ヨセフの兄弟たちがやって来たという知らせがファラオの宮廷に伝わると、ファラオも家来たちも喜んだ。
45:17 ファラオはヨセフに言った。「兄弟たちに、こうするように言いなさい。『家畜に荷を積んでカナンの地に行き、
45:18 父上と家族をここへ連れて来なさい。わたしは、エジプトの国の最良のものを与えよう。あなたたちはこの国の最上の産物を食べるがよい。』
45:19 また、こうするよう命じなさい。『エジプトの国から、あなたたちの子供や妻たちを乗せる馬車を引いて行き、父上もそれに乗せて来るがよい。
45:20 家財道具などには未練を残さないように。エジプトの国中で最良のものが、あなたたちのものになるのだから。』」
45:21 イスラエルの息子たちはそのとおりにした。ヨセフは、ファラオの命令に従って、彼らに馬車を与え、また道中の食糧を与えた。
45:22 ヨセフは更に、全員にそれぞれ晴れ着を与えたが、特にベニヤミンには銀三百枚と晴れ着五枚を与えた。
45:23 父にも、エジプトの最良のものを積んだろば十頭と、穀物やパン、それに父の道中に必要な食糧を積んだ雌ろば十頭を贈った。
45:24 いよいよ兄弟たちを送り出すとき、出発にあたってヨセフは、「途中で、争わないでください」と言った。
45:25 兄弟たちはエジプトからカナン地方へ上って行き、父ヤコブのもとへ帰ると、
45:26 直ちに報告した。「ヨセフがまだ生きています。しかも、エジプト全国を治める者になっています。」父は気が遠くなった。彼らの言うことが信じられなかったのである。
45:27 彼らはヨセフが話したとおりのことを、残らず父に語り、ヨセフが父を乗せるために遣わした馬車を見せた。父ヤコブは元気を取り戻した。
45:28 イスラエルは言った。「よかった。息子ヨセフがまだ生きていたとは。わたしは行こう。死ぬ前に、どうしても会いたい。」
◆ヤコブのエジプト下り
46:1 イスラエルは、一家を挙げて旅立った。そして、ベエル・シェバに着くと、父イサクの神にいけにえをささげた。
46:2 その夜、幻の中で神がイスラエルに、「ヤコブ、ヤコブ」と呼びかけた。彼が、「はい」と答えると、
46:3 神は言われた。「わたしは神、あなたの父の神である。エジプトへ下ることを恐れてはならない。わたしはあなたをそこで大いなる国民にする。
46:4 わたしがあなたと共にエジプトへ下り、わたしがあなたを必ず連れ戻す。ヨセフがあなたのまぶたを閉じてくれるであろう。」
46:5 ヤコブはベエル・シェバを出発した。イスラエルの息子たちは、ファラオが遣わした馬車に父ヤコブと子供や妻たちを乗せた。
46:6 ヤコブとその子孫は皆、カナン地方で得た家畜や財産を携えてエジプトへ向かった。
46:7 こうしてヤコブは、息子や孫、娘や孫娘など、子孫を皆連れてエジプトへ行った。
46:8 エジプトへ行ったイスラエルの人々、すなわちヤコブとその子らの名前は次のとおりである。ヤコブの長男ルベン。
46:9 ルベンの息子のハノク、パル、ヘツロン、カルミ。
46:10 シメオンの息子のエムエル、ヤミン、オハド、ヤキン、ツォハル、およびカナンの女による息子シャウル。
46:11 レビの息子のゲルション、ケハト、メラリ。
46:12 ユダの息子のエル、オナン、シェラ、ペレツ、ゼラ。ただし、エルとオナンはカナンの土地で死んだ。ペレツの息子のヘツロン、ハムル。
46:13 イサカルの息子のトラ、プワ、ヨブ、シムロン。
46:14 ゼブルンの息子のセレド、エロン、ヤフレエル。
46:15 これらは、レアがパダン・アラムでヤコブとの間に産んだ子らである。ヤコブの娘ディナも含め、男女の総数は三十三名である。
46:16 ガドの息子のツィフヨン、ハギ、シュニ、エツボン、エリ、アロディ、アルエリ。
46:17 アシェルの息子のイムナ、イシュワ、イシュビ、ベリア、および妹セラ。ベリアの息子はヘベル、マルキエル。
46:18 これらは、ラバンが娘レアに与えたジルパの子らである。ジルパがヤコブとの間に産んだのは十六名である。
46:19 ヤコブの妻ラケルの息子のヨセフ、ベニヤミン。
46:20 ヨセフには、エジプトの国で息子が生まれた。それは、オンの祭司のポティ・フェラの娘アセナトが彼との間に産んだマナセとエフライムである。
46:21 ベニヤミンの息子のベラ、ベケル、アシュベル、ゲラ、ナアマン、エヒ、ロシュ、ムピム、フピム、アルド。
46:22 これらは、ヤコブとの間に生まれたラケルの子らで、その総数は十四名である。
46:23 ダンの息子のフシム。
46:24 ナフタリの息子のヤフツェエル、グニ、イエツェル、シレム。
46:25 これらは、ラバンが娘ラケルに与えたビルハの子らである。ビルハがヤコブとの間に産んだ者の総数は七名である。
46:26 ヤコブの腰から出た者で、ヤコブと共にエジプトへ行った者は、ヤコブの息子の妻たちを除けば、総数六十六名である。
46:27 エジプトで生まれたヨセフの息子は二人である。従って、エジプトへ行ったヤコブの家族は総数七十名であった。
◆ゴシェンでの再会
46:28 ヤコブは、ヨセフをゴシェンに連れて来るために、ユダを一足先にヨセフのところへ遣わした。そして一行はゴシェンの地に到着した。
46:29 ヨセフは車を用意させると、父イスラエルに会いにゴシェンへやって来た。ヨセフは父を見るやいなや、父の首に抱きつき、その首にすがったまま、しばらく泣き続けた。
46:30 イスラエルはヨセフに言った。「わたしはもう死んでもよい。お前がまだ生きていて、お前の顔を見ることができたのだから。」
46:31 ヨセフは、兄弟や父の家族の者たちに言った。「わたしはファラオのところへ報告のため参上し、『カナン地方にいたわたしの兄弟と父の家族の者たちがわたしのところに参りました。
46:32 この人たちは羊飼いで、家畜の群れを飼っていたのですが、羊や牛をはじめ、すべての財産を携えてやって来ました』と申します。
46:33 ですから、ファラオがあなたたちをお召しになって、『仕事は何か』と言われたら、
46:34 『あなたの僕であるわたしどもは、先祖代々、幼い時から今日まで家畜の群れを飼う者でございます』と答えてください。そうすれば、あなたたちはゴシェンの地域に住むことができるでしょう。」羊飼いはすべて、エジプト人のいとうものであったのである。
◆ファラオとの会見
47:1 ヨセフはファラオのところへ行き、「わたしの父と兄弟たちが、羊や牛をはじめ、すべての財産を携えて、カナン地方からやって来て、今、ゴシェンの地におります」と報告した。
47:2 そのときヨセフは、兄弟の中から五人を選んで、ファラオの前に連れて行った。
47:3 ファラオはヨセフの兄弟たちに言った。「お前たちの仕事は何か。」兄弟たちが、「あなたの僕であるわたしどもは、先祖代々、羊飼いでございます」と答え、
47:4 更に続けてファラオに言った。「わたしどもはこの国に寄留させていただきたいと思って、参りました。カナン地方は飢饉がひどく、僕たちの羊を飼うための牧草がありません。僕たちをゴシェンの地に住まわせてください。」
47:5 ファラオはヨセフに向かって言った。「父上と兄弟たちが、お前のところにやって来たのだ。
47:6 エジプトの国のことはお前に任せてあるのだから、最も良い土地に父上と兄弟たちを住まわせるがよい。ゴシェンの地に住まわせるのもよかろう。もし、一族の中に有能な者がいるなら、わたしの家畜の監督をさせるがよい。」
47:7 それから、ヨセフは父ヤコブを連れて来て、ファラオの前に立たせた。ヤコブはファラオに祝福の言葉を述べた。
47:8 ファラオが、「あなたは何歳におなりですか」とヤコブに語りかけると、
47:9 ヤコブはファラオに答えた。「わたしの旅路の年月は百三十年です。わたしの生涯の年月は短く、苦しみ多く、わたしの先祖たちの生涯や旅路の年月には及びません。」
47:10 ヤコブは、別れの挨拶をして、ファラオの前から退出した。
47:11 ヨセフはファラオが命じたように、父と兄弟たちの住まいを定め、エジプトの国に所有地を与えた。そこは、ラメセス地方の最も良い土地であった。
47:12 ヨセフはまた、父と兄弟たちと父の家族の者すべてを養い、扶養すべき者の数に従って食糧を与えた。
◆ヨセフの政策
47:13 飢饉が極めて激しく、世界中に食糧がなくなった。エジプトの国でも、カナン地方でも、人々は飢饉のために苦しみあえいだ。
47:14 ヨセフは、エジプトの国とカナン地方の人々が穀物の代金として支払った銀をすべて集め、それをファラオの宮廷に納めた。
47:15 エジプトの国にもカナン地方にも、銀が尽き果てると、エジプト人は皆、ヨセフのところにやって来て、「食べる物をください。あなたさまは、わたしどもを見殺しになさるおつもりですか。銀はなくなってしまいました」と言った。
47:16 ヨセフは答えた。「家畜を連れて来なさい。もし銀がなくなったのなら、家畜と引き換えに与えよう。」
47:17 人々が家畜をヨセフのところに連れて来ると、ヨセフは、馬や、羊や牛の群れや、ろばと引き換えに食糧を与えた。ヨセフはこうして、その年、すべての家畜と引き換えに人々に食糧を分け与えた。
47:18 その年も終わり、次の年になると、人々はまたヨセフのところに来て、言った。「御主君には、何もかも隠さずに申し上げます。銀はすっかりなくなり、家畜の群れも御主君のものとなって、御覧のように残っているのは、わたしどもの体と農地だけです。
47:19 どうしてあなたさまの前で、わたしどもと農地が滅んでしまってよいでしょうか。食糧と引き換えに、わたしどもと土地を買い上げてください。わたしどもは農地とともに、ファラオの奴隷になります。種をお与えください。そうすれば、わたしどもは死なずに生きることができ、農地も荒れ果てないでしょう。」
47:20 ヨセフは、エジプト中のすべての農地をファラオのために買い上げた。飢饉が激しくなったので、エジプト人は皆自分の畑を売ったからである。土地はこうして、ファラオのものとなった。
47:21 また民については、エジプト領の端から端まで、ヨセフが彼らを奴隷にした。
47:22 ただし、祭司の農地だけは買い上げなかった。祭司にはファラオからの給与があって、ファラオが与える給与で生活していたので、農地を売らなかったからである。
47:23 ヨセフは民に言った。「よいか、お前たちは今日、農地とともにファラオに買い取られたのだ。さあ、ここに種があるから、畑に蒔きなさい。
47:24 収穫の時には、五分の一をファラオに納め、五分の四はお前たちのものとするがよい。それを畑に蒔く種にしたり、お前たちや家族の者の食糧とし、子供たちの食糧としなさい。」
47:25 彼らは言った。「あなたさまはわたしどもの命の恩人です。御主君の御好意によって、わたしどもはファラオの奴隷にさせていただきます。」
47:26 ヨセフはこのように、収穫の五分の一をファラオに納めることを、エジプトの農業の定めとした。それは今日まで続いている。ただし、祭司の農地だけはファラオのものにならなかった。
◆ヤコブの遺言
47:27 イスラエルは、エジプトの国、ゴシェンの地域に住み、そこに土地を得て、子を産み、大いに数を増した。
47:28 ヤコブは、エジプトの国で十七年生きた。ヤコブの生涯は百四十七年であった。
47:29 イスラエルは死ぬ日が近づいたとき、息子ヨセフを呼び寄せて言った。「もし、お前がわたしの願いを聞いてくれるなら、お前の手をわたしの腿の間に入れ、わたしのために慈しみとまことをもって実行すると、誓ってほしい。どうか、わたしをこのエジプトには葬らないでくれ。
47:30 わたしが先祖たちと共に眠りについたなら、わたしをエジプトから運び出して、先祖たちの墓に葬ってほしい。」ヨセフが、「必ず、おっしゃるとおりにいたします」と答えると、
47:31 「では、誓ってくれ」と言ったので、ヨセフは誓った。イスラエルは、寝台の枕もとで感謝を表した。
◆ヤコブ、ヨセフの子らを祝福する
48:1 これらのことの後で、ヨセフに、「お父上が御病気です」との知らせが入ったので、ヨセフは二人の息子マナセとエフライムを連れて行った。
48:2 ある人がヤコブに、「御子息のヨセフさまが、ただいまお見えになりました」と知らせると、イスラエルは力を奮い起こして、寝台の上に座った。
48:3 ヤコブはヨセフに言った。「全能の神がカナン地方のルズでわたしに現れて、わたしを祝福してくださったとき、
48:4 こう言われた。『あなたの子孫を繁栄させ、数を増やし／あなたを諸国民の群れとしよう。この土地をあなたに続く子孫に／永遠の所有地として与えよう。』
48:5 今、わたしがエジプトのお前のところに来る前に、エジプトの国で生まれたお前の二人の息子をわたしの子供にしたい。エフライムとマナセは、ルベンやシメオンと同じように、わたしの子となるが、
48:6 その後に生まれる者はお前のものとしてよい。しかし、彼らの嗣業の土地は兄たちの名で呼ばれるであろう。
48:7 わたしはパダンから帰る途中、ラケルに死なれてしまった。あれはカナン地方で、エフラトまで行くには、まだかなりの道のりがある途中でのことだった。わたしはラケルを、エフラト、つまり今のベツレヘムへ向かう道のほとりに葬った。」
48:8 イスラエルは、ヨセフの息子たちを見ながら、「これは誰か」と尋ねた。
48:9 ヨセフが父に、「神が、ここで授けてくださったわたしの息子です」と答えると、父は、「ここへ連れて来なさい。彼らを祝福しよう」と言った。
48:10 イスラエルの目は老齢のためかすんでよく見えなかったので、ヨセフが二人の息子を父のもとに近寄らせると、父は彼らに口づけをして抱き締めた。
48:11 イスラエルはヨセフに言った。「お前の顔さえ見ることができようとは思わなかったのに、なんと、神はお前の子供たちをも見させてくださった。」
48:12 ヨセフは彼らを父の膝から離し、地にひれ伏して拝した。
48:13 ヨセフは二人の息子のうち、エフライムを自分の右手でイスラエルの左手に向かわせ、マナセを自分の左手でイスラエルの右手に向かわせ、二人を近寄らせた。
48:14 イスラエルは右手を伸ばして、弟であるエフライムの頭の上に置き、左手をマナセの頭の上に置いた。つまり、マナセが長男であるのに、彼は両手を交差して置いたのである。
48:15 そして、ヨセフを祝福して言った。「わたしの先祖アブラハムとイサクが／その御前に歩んだ神よ。わたしの生涯を今日まで／導かれた牧者なる神よ。
48:16 わたしをあらゆる苦しみから／贖われた御使いよ。どうか、この子供たちの上に／祝福をお与えください。どうか、わたしの名と／わたしの先祖アブラハム、イサクの名が／彼らによって覚えられますように。どうか、彼らがこの地上に／数多く増え続けますように。」
48:17 ヨセフは、父が右手をエフライムの頭の上に置いているのを見て、不満に思い、父の手を取ってエフライムの頭からマナセの頭へ移そうとした。
48:18 ヨセフは父に言った。「父上、そうではありません。これが長男ですから、右手をこれの頭の上に置いてください。」
48:19 ところが、父はそれを拒んで言った。「いや、分かっている。わたしの子よ、わたしには分かっている。この子も一つの民となり、大きくなるであろう。しかし、弟の方が彼よりも大きくなり、その子孫は国々に満ちるものとなる。」
48:20 その日、父は彼らを祝福して言った。「あなたによって／イスラエルは人を祝福して言うであろう。『どうか、神があなたを／エフライムとマナセのように／してくださるように。』」彼はこのように、エフライムをマナセの上に立てたのである。
48:21 イスラエルはヨセフに言った。「間もなく、わたしは死ぬ。だが、神がお前たちと共にいてくださり、きっとお前たちを先祖の国に導き帰らせてくださる。
48:22 わたしは、お前に兄弟たちよりも多く、わたしが剣と弓をもってアモリ人の手から取った一つの分け前（シェケム）を与えることにする。」
◆ヤコブの祝福
49:1 ヤコブは息子たちを呼び寄せて言った。「集まりなさい。わたしは後の日にお前たちに起こることを語っておきたい。
49:2 ヤコブの息子たちよ、集まって耳を傾けよ。お前たちの父イスラエルに耳を傾けよ。
49:3 ルベンよ、お前はわたしの長子／わたしの勢い、命の力の初穂。気位が高く、力も強い。
49:4 お前は水のように奔放で／長子の誉れを失う。お前は父の寝台に上った。あのとき、わたしの寝台に上り／それを汚した。
49:5 シメオンとレビは似た兄弟。彼らの剣は暴力の道具。
49:6 わたしの魂よ、彼らの謀議に加わるな。わたしの心よ、彼らの仲間に連なるな。彼らは怒りのままに人を殺し／思うがままに雄牛の足の筋を切った。
49:7 呪われよ、彼らの怒りは激しく／憤りは甚だしいゆえに。わたしは彼らをヤコブの間に分け／イスラエルの間に散らす。

49:10 王笏はユダから離れず／統治の杖は足の間から離れない。ついにシロが来て、諸国の民は彼に従う。

49:30 それはカナン地方のマムレの前のマクペラの畑にある洞穴で、アブラハムがヘト人エフロンから買い取り、墓地として所有するようになった。
49:31 そこに、アブラハムと妻サラが葬られている。そこに、イサクと妻リベカも葬られている。そこに、わたしもレアを葬った。
49:32 あの畑とあそこにある洞穴は、ヘトの人たちから買い取ったものだ。」
49:33 ヤコブは、息子たちに命じ終えると、寝床の上に足をそろえ、息を引き取り、先祖の列に加えられた。
◆ヤコブの埋葬
50:1 ヨセフは父の顔に伏して泣き、口づけした。
50:2 ヨセフは自分の侍医たちに、父のなきがらに薬を塗り、防腐処置をするように命じたので、医者はイスラエルにその処置をした。
50:3 そのために四十日を費やした。この処置をするにはそれだけの日数が必要であった。エジプト人は七十日の間喪に服した。
50:4 喪が明けると、ヨセフはファラオの宮廷に願い出た。「ぜひともよろしくファラオにお取り次ぎください。
50:5 実は、父がわたしに誓わせて、『わたしは間もなく死ぬ。そのときは、カナンの土地に用意してある墓にわたしを葬ってくれ』と申しました。ですから、どうか父を葬りに行かせてください。わたしはまた帰って参ります。」
50:6 ファラオは答えた。「父上が誓わせたとおりに、葬りに行って来るがよい。」
50:7 ヨセフは父を葬りに上って行った。ヨセフと共に上って行ったのは、ファラオの宮廷の元老である重臣たちすべてとエジプトの国の長老たちすべて、
50:8 それにヨセフの家族全員と彼の兄弟たち、および父の一族であった。ただ幼児と、羊と牛の群れはゴシェンの地域に残した。
50:9 また戦車も騎兵も共に上って行ったので、それはまことに盛大な行列となった。
50:10 一行はヨルダン川の東側にあるゴレン・アタドに着き、そこで非常に荘厳な葬儀を行った。父の追悼の儀式は七日間にわたって行われた。

◆赦しの再確認
50:15 ヨセフの兄弟たちは、父が死んでしまったので、ヨセフがことによると自分たちをまだ恨み、昔ヨセフにしたすべての悪に仕返しをするのではないかと思った。
50:16 そこで、人を介してヨセフに言った。「お父さんは亡くなる前に、こう言っていました。
50:17 『お前たちはヨセフにこう言いなさい。確かに、兄たちはお前に悪いことをしたが、どうか兄たちの咎と罪を赦してやってほしい。』お願いです。どうか、あなたの父の神に仕える僕たちの咎を赦してください。」これを聞いて、ヨセフは涙を流した。
50:18 やがて、兄たち自身もやって来て、ヨセフの前にひれ伏して、「このとおり、私どもはあなたの僕です」と言うと、
50:19 ヨセフは兄たちに言った。「恐れることはありません。わたしが神に代わることができましょうか。
50:20 あなたがたはわたしに悪をたくらみましたが、神はそれを善に変え、多くの民の命を救うために、今日のようにしてくださったのです。
50:21 どうか恐れないでください。このわたしが、あなたたちとあなたたちの子供を養いましょう。」ヨセフはこのように、兄たちを慰め、優しく語りかけた。
◆ヨセフの死
50:22 ヨセフは父の家族と共にエジプトに住み、百十歳まで生き、
50:23 エフライムの三代の子孫を見ることができた。マナセの息子マキルの子供たちも生まれると、ヨセフの膝に抱かれた。
50:24 ヨセフは兄弟たちに言った。「わたしは間もなく死にます。しかし、神は必ずあなたたちを顧みてくださり、この国からアブラハム、イサク、ヤコブに誓われた土地に導き上ってくださいます。」
50:25 それから、ヨセフはイスラエルの息子たちにこう言って誓わせた。「神は、必ずあなたたちを顧みてくださいます。そのときには、わたしの骨をここから携えて上ってください。」
50:26 ヨセフはこうして、百十歳で死んだ。人々はエジプトで彼のなきがらに薬を塗り、防腐処置をして、ひつぎに納めた。
25:1 Abraham again took a wife, and her name was Keturah.
25:2 And she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
25:3 Jokshan begot Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.
25:4 And the sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abidah, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.
25:5 And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac.
25:6 But Abraham gave gifts to the sons of the concubines which Abraham had; and while he was still living he sent them eastward, away from Isaac his son, to the country of the east.
25:7 This is the sum of the years of Abraham's life which he lived: one hundred and seventy-five years.
25:8 Then Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people.
25:9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite,
25:10 the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth. There Abraham was buried, and Sarah his wife.
25:11 And it came to pass, after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac. And Isaac dwelt at Beer Lahai Roi.
25:12 Now this is the genealogy of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's maidservant, bore to Abraham.
25:13 And these were the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: The firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
25:14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa,
25:15 Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
25:16 These were the sons of Ishmael and these were their names, by their towns and their settlements, twelve princes according to their nations.
25:17 These were the years of the life of Ishmael: one hundred and thirty-seven years; and he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.
25:18 (They dwelt from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt as you go toward Assyria.) He died in the presence of all his brethren.
25:19 This is the genealogy of Isaac, Abraham's son. Abraham begot Isaac.
25:20 Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah as wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan Aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian.
25:21 Now Isaac pleaded with the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord granted his plea, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
25:22 But the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If all is well, why am I like this?" So she went to inquire of the Lord.
25:23 And the Lord said to her: "Two nations are in your womb,Two peoples shall be separated from your body;One people shall be stronger than the other,And the older shall serve the younger."
25:24 So when her days were fulfilled for her to give birth, indeed there were twins in her womb.
25:25 And the first came out red. He was like a hairy garment all over; so they called his name Esau.
25:26 Afterward his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esau's heel; so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.
25:27 So the boys grew. And Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Jacob was a mild man, dwelling in tents.
25:28 And Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
25:29 Now Jacob cooked a stew; and Esau came in from the field, and he was weary.
25:30 And Esau said to Jacob, "Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary." Therefore his name was called Edom.
25:31 But Jacob said, "Sell me your birthright as of this day."
25:32 And Esau said, "Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?"
25:33 Then Jacob said, "Swear to me as of this day." So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.
25:34 And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
26:1 There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar.
26:2 Then the Lord appeared to him and said: "Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you.
26:3 "Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.
26:4 "And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;
26:5 "because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws."
26:6 So Isaac dwelt in Gerar.
26:7 And the men of the place asked about his wife. And he said, "She is my sister"; for he was afraid to say, "She is my wife," because he thought, "lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to behold."
26:8 Now it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked through a window, and saw, and there was Isaac, showing endearment to Rebekah his wife.
26:9 Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, "Quite obviously she is your wife; so how could you say, 'She is my sister'?" And Isaac said to him, "Because I said, 'Lest I die on account of her.' "
26:10 And Abimelech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the people might soon have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us."
26:11 So Abimelech charged all his people, saying, "He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death."
26:12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him.
26:13 The man began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous;
26:14 for he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great number of servants. So the Philistines envied him.
26:15 Now the Philistines had stopped up all the wells which his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, and they had filled them with earth.
26:16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we."
26:17 Then Isaac departed from there and pitched his tent in the Valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
26:18 And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. He called them by the names which his father had called them.
26:19 Also Isaac's servants dug in the valley, and found a well of running water there.
26:20 But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, "The water is ours." So he called the name of the well Esek, because they quarreled with him.
26:21 Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one also. So he called its name Sitnah.
26:22 And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, because he said, "For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land."
26:23 Then he went up from there to Beersheba.
26:24 And the Lord appeared to him the same night and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham; do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for My servant Abraham's sake."
26:25 So he built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord, and he pitched his tent there; and there Isaac's servants dug a well.
26:26 Then Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath, one of his friends, and Phichol the commander of his army.
26:27 And Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?"
26:28 But they said, "We have certainly seen that the Lord is with you. So we said, 'Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a covenant with you,
26:29 'that you will do us no harm, since we have not touched you, and since we have done nothing to you but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the Lord.' "
26:30 So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.
26:31 Then they arose early in the morning and swore an oath with one another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
26:32 It came to pass the same day that Isaac's servants came and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, "We have found water."
26:33 So he called it Shebah. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.
26:34 When Esau was forty years old, he took as wives Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite.
26:35 And they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah.
27:1 Now it came to pass, when Isaac was old and his eyes were so dim that he could not see, that he called Esau his older son and said to him, "My son." And he answered him, "Here I am."
27:2 Then he said, "Behold now, I am old. I do not know the day of my death.
27:3 "Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me.
27:4 "And make me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before I die."
27:5 Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt game and to bring it.
27:6 So Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, "Indeed I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying,
27:7 'Bring me game and make savory food for me, that I may eat it and bless you in the presence of the Lord before my death.'
27:8 "Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to what I command you.
27:9 "Go now to the flock and bring me from there two choice kids of the goats, and I will make savory food from them for your father, such as he loves.
27:10 "Then you shall take it to your father, that he may eat it, and that he may bless you before his death."
27:11 And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, "Look, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth-skinned man.
27:12 "Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be a deceiver to him; and I shall bring a curse on myself and not a blessing."
27:13 But his mother said to him, "Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for me."
27:14 And he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and his mother made savory food, such as his father loved.
27:15 Then Rebekah took the choice clothes of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son.
27:16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.
27:17 Then she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.
27:18 So he went to his father and said, "My father.' And he said, "Here I am. Who are you, my son?"
27:19 Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau your firstborn; I have done just as you told me; please arise, sit and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me."
27:20 But Isaac said to his son, "How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?" And he said, "Because the Lord your God brought it to me."
27:21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, "Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not."
27:22 So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, "The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau."
27:23 And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau's hands; so he blessed him.
27:24 Then he said, "Are you really my son Esau?" He said, "I am."
27:25 He said, "Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son's game, so that my soul may bless you." So he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank.
27:26 Then his father Isaac said to him, "Come near now and kiss me, my son."
27:27 And he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said:"Surely, the smell of my sonIs like the smell of a fieldWhich the Lord has blessed.
27:28 Therefore may God give youOf the dew of heaven,Of the fatness of the earth,And plenty of grain and wine.
27:29 Let peoples serve you,And nations bow down to you.Be master over your brethren,And let your mother's sons bow down to you.Cursed be everyone who curses you,And blessed be those who bless you!"
27:30 Now it happened, as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.
27:31 He also had made savory food, and brought it to his father, and said to his father, "Let my father arise and eat of his son's game, that your soul may bless me."
27:32 And his father Isaac said to him, "Who are you?" So he said, "I am your son, your firstborn, Esau."
27:33 Then Isaac trembled exceedingly, and said, "Who? Where is the one who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it before you came, and I have blessed him-and indeed he shall be blessed."
27:34 When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, "Bless me-me also, O my father!"
27:35 But he said, "Your brother came with deceit and has taken away your blessing."
27:36 And Esau said, "Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!" And he said, "Have you not reserved a blessing for me?"
27:37 Then Isaac answered and said to Esau, "Indeed I have made him your master, and all his brethren I have given to him as servants; with grain and wine I have sustained him. What shall I do now for you, my son?"
27:38 And Esau said to his father, "Have you only one blessing, my father? Bless me-me also, O my father!" And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.
27:39 Then Isaac his father answered and said to him: "Behold, your dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth,And of the dew of heaven from above.
27:40 By your sword you shall live,And you shall serve your brother;And it shall come to pass, when you become restless,That you shall break his yoke from your neck."
27:41 So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, "The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob."
27:42 And the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, "Surely your brother Esau comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you.
27:43 "Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: arise, flee to my brother Laban in Haran.
27:44 "And stay with him a few days, until your brother's fury turns away,
27:45 "until your brother's anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereaved also of you both in one day?"
27:46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth; if Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, like these who are the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?"
28:1 Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and charged him, and said to him: "You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.
28:2 "Arise, go to Padan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother's father; and take yourself a wife from there of the daughters of Laban your mother's brother.
28:3 "May God Almighty bless you,And make you fruitful and multiply you,That you may be an assembly of peoples;
28:4 And give you the blessing of Abraham,To you and your descendants with you,That you may inherit the landIn which you are a stranger,Which God gave to Abraham."
28:5 So Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Padan Aram, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.
28:6 Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Padan Aram to take himself a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, "You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,"
28:7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Padan Aram.
28:8 Also Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan did not please his father Isaac.
28:9 So Esau went to Ishmael and took Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife in addition to the wives he had.
28:10 Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran.
28:11 So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep.
28:12 Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
28:13 And behold, the Lord stood above it and said: "I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants.
28:14 "Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
28:15 "Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you."
28:16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it."
28:17 And he was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!"
28:18 Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it.
28:19 And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously.
28:20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on,
28:21 "so that I come back to my father's house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God.
28:22 "And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God's house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You."
29:1 So Jacob went on his journey and came to the land of the people of the East.
29:2 And he looked, and saw a well in the field; and behold, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks. A large stone was on the well's mouth.
29:3 Now all the flocks would be gathered there; and they would roll the stone from the well's mouth, water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place on the well's mouth.
29:4 And Jacob said to them, "My brethren, where are you from?" And they said, "We are from Haran."
29:5 Then he said to them, "Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?" And they said, "We know him."
29:6 So he said to them, "Is he well?" And they said, "He is well. And look, his daughter Rachel is coming with the sheep."
29:7 Then he said, "Look, it is still high day; it is not time for the cattle to be gathered together. Water the sheep, and go and feed them."
29:8 But they said, "We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together, and they have rolled the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep."
29:9 Now while he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she was a shepherdess.
29:10 And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.
29:11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice and wept.
29:12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's relative and that he was Rebekah's son. So she ran and told her father.
29:13 Then it came to pass, when Laban heard the report about Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him and kissed him, and brought him to his house. So he told Laban all these things.
29:14 And Laban said to him, "Surely you are my bone and my flesh." And he stayed with him for a month.
29:15 Then Laban said to Jacob, "Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what should your wages be?"
29:16 Now Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.
29:17 Leah's eyes were delicate, but Rachel was beautiful of form and appearance.
29:18 Now Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, "I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter."
29:19 And Laban said, "It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to another man. Stay with me."
29:20 So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her.
29:21 Then Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her."
29:22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place and made a feast.
29:23 Now it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her.
29:24 And Laban gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah as a maid.
29:25 So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you deceived me?"
29:26 And Laban said, "It must not be done so in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.
29:27 "Fulfill her week, and we will give you this one also for the service which you will serve with me still another seven years."
29:28 Then Jacob did so and fulfilled her week. So he gave him his daughter Rachel as wife also.
29:29 And Laban gave his maid Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as a maid.
29:30 Then Jacob also went in to Rachel, and he also loved Rachel more than Leah. And he served with Laban still another seven years.
29:31 When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.
29:32 So Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben; for she said, "The Lord has surely looked on my affliction. Now therefore, my husband will love me."
29:33 Then she conceived again and bore a son, and said, "Because the Lord has heard that I am unloved, He has therefore given me this son also." And she called his name Simeon.
29:34 She conceived again and bore a son, and said, "Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons." Therefore his name was called Levi.
29:35 And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, "Now I will praise the Lord." Therefore she called his name Judah. Then she stopped bearing.
30:1 Now when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and said to Jacob, "Give me children, or else I die!"
30:2 And Jacob's anger was aroused against Rachel, and he said, "Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?"
30:3 So she said, "Here is my maid Bilhah; go in to her, and she will bear a child on my knees, that I also may have children by her."
30:4 Then she gave him Bilhah her maid as wife, and Jacob went in to her.
30:5 And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son.
30:6 Then Rachel said, "God has judged my case; and He has also heard my voice and given me a son." Therefore she called his name Dan.
30:7 And Rachel's maid Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.
30:8 Then Rachel said, "With great wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister, and indeed I have prevailed." So she called his name Naphtali.
30:9 When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpah her maid and gave her to Jacob as wife.
30:10 And Leah's maid Zilpah bore Jacob a son.
30:11 Then Leah said, "A troop comes!" So she called his name Gad.
30:12 And Leah's maid Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.
30:13 Then Leah said, "I am happy, for the daughters will call me blessed." So she called his name Asher.
30:14 Now Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your son's mandrakes."
30:15 But she said to her, "Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son's mandrakes also?" And Rachel said, "Therefore he will lie with you tonight for your son's mandrakes."
30:16 When Jacob came out of the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, "You must come in to me, for I have surely hired you with my son's mandrakes." And he lay with her that night.
30:17 And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son.
30:18 Leah said, "God has given me my wages, because I have given my maid to my husband." So she called his name Issachar.
30:19 Then Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son.
30:20 And Leah said, "God has endowed me with a good endowment; now my husband will dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons." So she called his name Zebulun.
30:21 Afterward she bore a daughter, and called her name Dinah.
30:22 Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb.
30:23 And she conceived and bore a son, and said, "God has taken away my reproach."
30:24 So she called his name Joseph, and said, "The Lord shall add to me another son."
30:25 And it came to pass, when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, "Send me away, that I may go to my own place and to my country.
30:26 "Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know my service which I have done for you."
30:27 And Laban said to him, "Please stay, if I have found favor in your eyes, for I have learned by experience that the Lord has blessed me for your sake."
30:28 Then he said, "Name me your wages, and I will give it."
30:29 So Jacob said to him, "You know how I have served you and how your livestock has been with me.
30:30 "For what you had before I came was little, and it has increased to a great amount; the Lord has blessed you since my coming. And now, when shall I also provide for my own house?"
30:31 So he said, "What shall I give you?" And Jacob said, "You shall not give me anything. If you will do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep your flocks:
30:32 "Let me pass through all your flock today, removing from there all the speckled and spotted sheep, and all the brown ones among the lambs, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and these shall be my wages.
30:33 "So my righteousness will answer for me in time to come, when the subject of my wages comes before you: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the lambs, will be considered stolen, if it is with me."
30:34 And Laban said, "Oh, that it were according to your word!"
30:35 So he removed that day the male goats that were speckled and spotted, all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had some white in it, and all the brown ones among the lambs, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
30:36 Then he put three days' journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.
30:37 Now Jacob took for himself rods of green poplar and of the almond and chestnut trees, peeled white strips in them, and exposed the white which was in the rods.
30:38 And the rods which he had peeled, he set before the flocks in the gutters, in the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink, so that they should conceive when they came to drink.
30:39 So the flocks conceived before the rods, and the flocks brought forth streaked, speckled, and spotted.
30:40 Then Jacob separated the lambs, and made the flocks face toward the streaked and all the brown in the flock of Laban; but he put his own flocks by themselves and did not put them with Laban's flock.
30:41 And it came to pass, whenever the stronger livestock conceived, that Jacob placed the rods before the eyes of the livestock in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.
30:42 But when the flocks were feeble, he did not put them in; so the feebler were Laban's and the stronger Jacob's.
30:43 Thus the man became exceedingly prosperous, and had large flocks, female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.
31:1 Now Jacob heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, "Jacob has taken away all that was our father's, and from what was our father's he has acquired all this wealth."
31:2 And Jacob saw the countenance of Laban, and indeed it was not favorable toward him as before.
31:3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, "Return to the land of your fathers and to your family, and I will be with you."
31:4 So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field, to his flock,
31:5 and said to them, "I see your father's countenance, that it is not favorable toward me as before; but the God of my father has been with me.
31:6 "And you know that with all my might I have served your father.
31:7 "Yet your father has deceived me and changed my wages ten times, but God did not allow him to hurt me.
31:8 "If he said thus: 'The speckled shall be your wages,' then all the flocks bore speckled. And if he said thus: 'The streaked shall be your wages,' then all the flocks bore streaked.
31:9 "So God has taken away the livestock of your father and given them to me.
31:10 "And it happened, at the time when the flocks conceived, that I lifted my eyes and saw in a dream, and behold, the rams which leaped upon the flocks were streaked, speckled, and gray-spotted.
31:11 "Then the Angel of God spoke to me in a dream, saying, 'Jacob.' And I said, 'Here I am.'
31:12 "And He said, 'Lift your eyes now and see, all the rams which leap on the flocks are streaked, speckled, and gray-spotted; for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you.
31:13 'I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar and where you made a vow to Me. Now arise, get out of this land, and return to the land of your family.' "
31:14 Then Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, "Is there still any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house?
31:15 "Are we not considered strangers by him? For he has sold us, and also completely consumed our money.
31:16 "For all these riches which God has taken from our father are really ours and our children's; now then, whatever God has said to you, do it."
31:17 Then Jacob rose and set his sons and his wives on camels.
31:18 And he carried away all his livestock and all his possessions which he had gained, his acquired livestock which he had gained in Padan Aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.
31:19 Now Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel had stolen the household idols that were her father's.
31:20 And Jacob stole away, unknown to Laban the Syrian, in that he did not tell him that he intended to flee.
31:21 So he fled with all that he had. He arose and crossed the river, and headed toward the mountains of Gilead.
31:22 And Laban was told on the third day that Jacob had fled.
31:23 Then he took his brethren with him and pursued him for seven days' journey, and he overtook him in the mountains of Gilead.
31:24 But God had come to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said to him, "Be careful that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad."
31:25 So Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mountains, and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mountains of Gilead.
31:26 And Laban said to Jacob: "What have you done, that you have stolen away unknown to me, and carried away my daughters like captives taken with the sword?
31:27 "Why did you flee away secretly, and steal away from me, and not tell me; for I might have sent you away with joy and songs, with timbrel and harp?
31:28 "And you did not allow me to kiss my sons and my daughters. Now you have done foolishly in so doing.
31:29 "It is in my power to do you harm, but the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, 'Be careful that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad.'
31:30 "And now you have surely gone because you greatly long for your father's house, but why did you steal my gods?"
31:31 Then Jacob answered and said to Laban, "Because I was afraid, for I said, 'Perhaps you would take your daughters from me by force.'
31:32 "With whomever you find your gods, do not let him live. In the presence of our brethren, identify what I have of yours and take it with you." For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.
31:33 And Laban went into Jacob's tent, into Leah's tent, and into the two maids' tents, but he did not find them. Then he went out of Leah's tent and entered Rachel's tent.
31:34 Now Rachel had taken the household idols, put them in the camel's saddle, and sat on them. And Laban searched all about the tent but did not find them.
31:35 And she said to her father, "Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise before you, for the manner of women is with me." And he searched but did not find the household idols.
31:36 Then Jacob was angry and rebuked Laban, and Jacob answered and said to Laban: "What is my trespass? What is my sin, that you have so hotly pursued me?
31:37 "Although you have searched all my things, what part of your household things have you found? Set it here before my brethren and your brethren, that they may judge between us both!
31:38 "These twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried their young, and I have not eaten the rams of your flock.
31:39 "That which was torn by beasts I did not bring to you; I bore the loss of it. You required it from my hand, whether stolen by day or stolen by night.
31:40 "There I was! In the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night, and my sleep departed from my eyes.
31:41 "Thus I have been in your house twenty years; I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and you have changed my wages ten times.
31:42 "Unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night."
31:43 And Laban answered and said to Jacob, "These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and this flock is my flock; all that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these my daughters or to their children whom they have borne?
31:44 "Now therefore, come, let us make a covenant, you and I, and let it be a witness between you and me."
31:45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.
31:46 Then Jacob said to his brethren, "Gather stones." And they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there on the heap.
31:47 Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, but Jacob called it Galeed.
31:48 And Laban said, "This heap is a witness between you and me this day." Therefore its name was called Galeed,
31:49 also Mizpah, because he said, "May the Lord watch between you and me when we are absent one from another.
31:50 "If you afflict my daughters, or if you take other wives besides my daughters, although no man is with us-see, God is witness between you and me!"
31:51 Then Laban said to Jacob, "Here is this heap and here is this pillar, which I have placed between you and me.
31:52 "This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not pass beyond this heap to you, and you will not pass beyond this heap and this pillar to me, for harm.
31:53 "The God of Abraham, the God of Nahor, and the God of their father judge between us." And Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac.
31:54 Then Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain, and called his brethren to eat bread. And they ate bread and stayed all night on the mountain.
31:55 And early in the morning Laban arose, and kissed his sons and daughters and blessed them. Then Laban departed and returned to his place.
32:1 So Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
32:2 When Jacob saw them, he said, "This is God's camp." And he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
32:3 Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
32:4 And he commanded them, saying, "Speak thus to my lord Esau, 'Thus your servant Jacob says: "I have dwelt with Laban and stayed there until now.
32:5 "I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight." ' "
32:6 Then the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau, and he also is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."
32:7 So Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies.
32:8 And he said, "If Esau comes to the one company and attacks it, then the other company which is left will escape."
32:9 Then Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the Lord who said to me, 'Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you':
32:10 "I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies.
32:11 "Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and attack me and the mother with the children.
32:12 "For You said, 'I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.' "
32:13 So he lodged there that same night, and took what came to his hand as a present for Esau his brother:
32:14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
32:15 thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals.
32:16 Then he delivered them to the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, "Pass over before me, and put some distance between successive droves."
32:17 And he commanded the first one, saying, "When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, 'To whom do you belong, and where are you going? Whose are these in front of you?'
32:18 "then you shall say, 'They are your servant Jacob's. It is a present sent to my lord Esau; and behold, he also is behind us.' "
32:19 So he commanded the second, the third, and all who followed the droves, saying, "In this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him;
32:20 "and also say, 'Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us.' " For he said, "I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me."
32:21 So the present went on over before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.
32:22 And he arose that night and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of Jabbok.
32:23 He took them, sent them over the brook, and sent over what he had.
32:24 Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day.
32:25 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob's hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him.
32:26 And He said, "Let Me go, for the day breaks." But he said, "I will not let You go unless You bless me!"
32:27 So He said to him, "What is your name?" He said, "Jacob."
32:28 And He said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed."
32:29 Then Jacob asked, saying, "Tell me Your name, I pray." And He said, "Why is it that you ask about My name?" And He blessed him there.
32:30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: "For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved."
32:31 Just as he crossed over Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip.
32:32 Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the muscle that shrank, which is on the hip socket, because He touched the socket of Jacob's hip in the muscle that shrank.
33:1 Now Jacob lifted his eyes and looked, and there, Esau was coming, and with him were four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants.
33:2 And he put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last.
33:3 Then he crossed over before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
33:4 But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.
33:5 And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and children, and said, "Who are these with you?" So he said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant."
33:6 Then the maidservants came near, they and their children, and bowed down.
33:7 And Leah also came near with her children, and they bowed down. Afterward Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed down.
33:8 Then Esau said, "What do you mean by all this company which I met?" And he said, "These are to find favor in the sight of my lord."
33:9 But Esau said, "I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself."
33:10 And Jacob said, "No, please, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present from my hand, inasmuch as I have seen your face as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me.
33:11 "Please, take my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough." So he urged him, and he took it.
33:12 Then Esau said, "Let us take our journey; let us go, and I will go before you."
33:13 But Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are weak, and the flocks and herds which are nursing are with me. And if the men should drive them hard one day, all the flock will die.
33:14 "Please let my lord go on ahead before his servant. I will lead on slowly at a pace which the livestock that go before me, and the children, are able to endure, until I come to my lord in Seir."
33:15 And Esau said, "Now let me leave with you some of the people who are with me." But he said, "What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord."
33:16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.
33:17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, built himself a house, and made booths for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.
33:18 Then Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan Aram; and he pitched his tent before the city.
33:19 And he bought the parcel of land, where he had pitched his tent, from the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for one hundred pieces of money.
33:20 Then he erected an altar there and called it El Elohe Israel.
34:1 Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
34:2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and violated her.
34:3 His soul was strongly attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke kindly to the young woman.
34:4 So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, "Get me this young woman as a wife."
34:5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; so Jacob held his peace until they came.
34:6 Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.
34:7 And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved and very angry, because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter, a thing which ought not to be done.
34:8 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, "The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.
34:9 "And make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to yourselves.
34:10 "So you shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you. Dwell and trade in it, and acquire possessions for yourselves in it."
34:11 Then Shechem said to her father and her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give.
34:12 "Ask me ever so much dowry and gift, and I will give according to what you say to me; but give me the young woman as a wife."
34:13 But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, and spoke deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.
34:14 And they said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a reproach to us.
34:15 "But on this condition we will consent to you: If you will become as we are, if every male of you is circumcised,
34:16 "then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us; and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
34:17 "But if you will not heed us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and be gone."
34:18 And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son.
34:19 So the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob's daughter. He was more honorable than all the household of his father.
34:20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying:
34:21 "These men are at peace with us. Therefore let them dwell in the land and trade in it. For indeed the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us as wives, and let us give them our daughters.
34:22 "Only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised.
34:23 "Will not their livestock, their property, and every animal of theirs be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us."
34:24 And all who went out of the gate of his city heeded Hamor and Shechem his son; every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
34:25 Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males.
34:26 And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem's house, and went out.
34:27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled.
34:28 They took their sheep, their oxen, and their donkeys, what was in the city and what was in the field,
34:29 and all their wealth. All their little ones and their wives they took captive; and they plundered even all that was in the houses.
34:30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have troubled me by making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and since I am few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill me. I shall be destroyed, my household and I."
34:31 But they said, "Should he treat our sister like a harlot?"
35:1 Then God said to Jacob, "Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother."
35:2 And Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments.
35:3 "Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me in the way which I have gone."
35:4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree which was by Shechem.
35:5 And they journeyed, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.
35:6 So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him.
35:7 And he built an altar there and called the place El Bethel, because there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.
35:8 Now Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called Allon Bachuth.
35:9 Then God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and blessed him.
35:10 And God said to him, "Your name is Jacob; your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, but Israel shall be your name." So He called his name Israel.
35:11 Also God said to him: "I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body.
35:12 "The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land."
35:13 Then God went up from him in the place where He talked with him.
35:14 So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it.
35:15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel.
35:16 Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor.
35:17 Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, "Do not fear; you will have this son also."
35:18 And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Benjamin.
35:19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
35:20 And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day.
35:21 Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
35:22 And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine; and Israel heard about it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:
35:23 the sons of Leah were Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;
35:24 the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin;
35:25 the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali;
35:26 and the sons of Zilpah, Leah's maidservant, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.
35:27 Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, or Kirjath Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt.
35:28 Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years.
35:29 So Isaac breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
36:1 Now this is the genealogy of Esau, who is Edom.
36:2 Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite; Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite;
36:3 and Basemath, Ishmael's daughter, sister of Nebajoth.
36:4 Now Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, and Basemath bore Reuel.
36:5 And Aholibamah bore Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. These were the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.
36:6 Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the persons of his household, his cattle and all his animals, and all his goods which he had gained in the land of Canaan, and went to a country away from the presence of his brother Jacob.
36:7 For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together, and the land where they were strangers could not support them because of their livestock.
36:8 So Esau dwelt in Mount Seir. Esau is Edom.
36:9 And this is the genealogy of Esau the father of the Edomites in Mount Seir.
36:10 These were the names of Esau's sons: Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, and Reuel the son of Basemath the wife of Esau.
36:11 And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.
36:12 Now Timna was the concubine of Eliphaz, Esau's son, and she bore Amalek to Eliphaz. These were the sons of Adah, Esau's wife.
36:13 These were the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the sons of Basemath, Esau's wife.
36:14 These were the sons of Aholibamah, Esau's wife, the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon. And she bore to Esau: Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah.
36:15 These were the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn son of Esau, were Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Zepho, Chief Kenaz,
36:16 Chief Korah, Chief Gatam, and Chief Amalek. These were the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom. They were the sons of Adah.
36:17 These were the sons of Reuel, Esau's son: Chief Nahath, Chief Zerah, Chief Shammah, and Chief Mizzah. These were the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom. These were the sons of Basemath, Esau's wife.
36:18 And these were the sons of Aholibamah, Esau's wife: Chief Jeush, Chief Jaalam, and Chief Korah. These were the chiefs who descended from Aholibamah, Esau's wife, the daughter of Anah.
36:19 These were the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and these were their chiefs.
36:20 These were the sons of Seir the Horite who inhabited the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,
36:21 Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites, the sons of Seir, in the land of Edom.
36:22 And the sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam. Lotan's sister was Timna.
36:23 These were the sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.
36:24 These were the sons of Zibeon: both Ajah and Anah. This was the Anah who found the water in the wilderness as he pastured the donkeys of his father Zibeon.
36:25 These were the children of Anah: Dishon and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah.
36:26 These were the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran.
36:27 These were the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.
36:28 These were the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran.
36:29 These were the chiefs of the Horites: Chief Lotan, Chief Shobal, Chief Zibeon, Chief Anah,
36:30 Chief Dishon, Chief Ezer, and Chief Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites, according to their chiefs in the land of Seir.
36:31 Now these were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel:
36:32 Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, and the name of his city was Dinhabah.
36:33 And when Bela died, Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place.
36:34 When Jobab died, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place.
36:35 And when Husham died, Hadad the son of Bedad, who attacked Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Avith.
36:36 When Hadad died, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place.
36:37 And when Samlah died, Saul of Rehoboth-by-the-River reigned in his place.
36:38 When Saul died, Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place.
36:39 And when Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor died, Hadar reigned in his place; and the name of his city was Pau. His wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.
36:40 And these were the names of the chiefs of Esau, according to their families and their places, by their names: Chief Timnah, Chief Alvah, Chief Jetheth,
36:41 Chief Aholibamah, Chief Elah, Chief Pinon,
36:42 Chief Kenaz, Chief Teman, Chief Mibzar,
36:43 Chief Magdiel, and Chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, according to their dwelling places in the land of their possession. Esau was the father of the Edomites.
37:1 Now Jacob dwelt in the land where his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.
37:2 This is the history of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives; and Joseph brought a bad report of them to his father.
37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors.
37:4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.
37:5 Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more.
37:6 So he said to them, "Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:
37:7 "There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf."
37:8 And his brothers said to him, "Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?" So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.
37:9 Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, "Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me."
37:10 So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?"
37:11 And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind.
37:12 Then his brothers went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.
37:13 And Israel said to Joseph, "Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, I will send you to them." So he said to him, "Here I am."
37:14 Then he said to him, "Please go and see if it is well with your brothers and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me." So he sent him out of the Valley of Hebron, and he went to Shechem.
37:15 Now a certain man found him, and there he was, wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, "What are you seeking?"
37:16 So he said, "I am seeking my brothers. Please tell me where they are feeding their flocks."
37:17 And the man said, "They have departed from here, for I heard them say, 'Let us go to Dothan.' " So Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.
37:18 Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him.
37:19 Then they said to one another, "Look, this dreamer is coming!
37:20 "Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, 'Some wild beast has devoured him.' We shall see what will become of his dreams!"
37:21 But Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands, and said, "Let us not kill him."
37:22 And Reuben said to them, "Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him"-that he might deliver him out of their hands, and bring him back to his father.
37:23 So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him.
37:24 Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it.
37:25 And they sat down to eat a meal. Then they lifted their eyes and looked, and there was a company of Ishmaelites, coming from Gilead with their camels, bearing spices, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry them down to Egypt.
37:26 So Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is there if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?
37:27 "Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother and our flesh." And his brothers listened.
37:28 Then Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.
37:29 Then Reuben returned to the pit, and indeed Joseph was not in the pit; and he tore his clothes.
37:30 And he returned to his brothers and said, "The lad is no more; and I, where shall I go?"
37:31 So they took Joseph's tunic, killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood.
37:32 Then they sent the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father and said, "We have found this. Do you know whether it is your son's tunic or not?"
37:33 And he recognized it and said, "It is my son's tunic. A wild beast has devoured him. Without doubt Joseph is torn to pieces."
37:34 Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days.
37:35 And all his sons and all his daughters arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, "For I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning." Thus his father wept for him.
37:36 Now the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard.
38:1 It came to pass at that time that Judah departed from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite whose name was Hirah.
38:2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua, and he married her and went in to her.
38:3 So she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er.
38:4 She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan.
38:5 And she conceived yet again and bore a son, and called his name Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.
38:6 Then Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
38:7 But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord killed him.
38:8 And Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother."
38:9 But Onan knew that the heir would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother's wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother.
38:10 And the thing which he did displeased the Lord; therefore He killed him also.
38:11 Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, "Remain a widow in your father's house till my son Shelah is grown." For he said, "Lest he also die like his brothers." And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.
38:12 Now in the process of time the daughter of Shua, Judah's wife, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
38:13 And it was told Tamar, saying, "Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep."
38:14 So she took off her widow's garments, covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place which was on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as a wife.
38:15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a harlot, because she had covered her face.
38:16 Then he turned to her by the way, and said, "Please let me come in to you"; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. So she said, "What will you give me, that you may come in to me?"
38:17 And he said, "I will send a young goat from the flock." So she said, "Will you give me a pledge till you send it?"
38:18 Then he said, "What pledge shall I give you?" So she said, "Your signet and cord, and your staff that is in your hand." Then he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him.
38:19 So she arose and went away, and laid aside her veil and put on the garments of her widowhood.
38:20 And Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand, but he did not find her.
38:21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, "Where is the harlot who was openly by the roadside?" And they said, "There was no harlot in this place."
38:22 So he returned to Judah and said, "I cannot find her. Also, the men of the place said there was no harlot in this place."
38:23 Then Judah said, "Let her take them for herself, lest we be shamed; for I sent this young goat and you have not found her."
38:24 And it came to pass, about three months after, that Judah was told, saying, "Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore she is with child by harlotry." So Judah said, "Bring her out and let her be burned!"
38:25 When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, "By the man to whom these belong, I am with child." And she said, "Please determine whose these are-the signet and cord, and staff."
38:26 So Judah acknowledged them and said, "She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son." And he never knew her again.
38:27 Now it came to pass, at the time for giving birth, that behold, twins were in her womb.
38:28 And so it was, when she was giving birth, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took a scarlet thread and bound it on his hand, saying, "This one came out first."
38:29 Then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out unexpectedly; and she said, "How did you break through? This breach be upon you!" Therefore his name was called Perez.
38:30 Afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet thread on his hand. And his name was called Zerah.
39:1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there.
39:2 The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
39:3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand.
39:4 So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority.
39:5 So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had in the house and in the field.
39:6 Thus he left all that he had in Joseph's hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.
39:7 And it came to pass after these things that his master's wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, "Lie with me."
39:8 But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand.
39:9 "There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?"
39:10 So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.
39:11 But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside,
39:12 that she caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me." But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.
39:13 And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,
39:14 that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, "See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.
39:15 "And it happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside."
39:16 So she kept his garment with her until his master came home.
39:17 Then she spoke to him with words like these, saying, "The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in to me to mock me;
39:18 "so it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside."
39:19 So it was, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, "Your servant did to me after this manner," that his anger was aroused.
39:20 Then Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison.
39:21 But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
39:22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing.
39:23 The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph's authority, because the Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper.
40:1 It came to pass after these things that the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their lord, the king of Egypt.
40:2 And Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief butler and the chief baker.
40:3 So he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison, the place where Joseph was confined.
40:4 And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; so they were in custody for a while.
40:5 Then the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison, had a dream, both of them, each man's dream in one night and each man's dream with its own interpretation.
40:6 And Joseph came in to them in the morning and looked at them, and saw that they were sad.
40:7 So he asked Pharaoh's officers who were with him in the custody of his lord's house, saying, "Why do you look so sad today?"
40:8 And they said to him, "We each have had a dream, and there is no interpreter of it." So Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please."
40:9 Then the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, "Behold, in my dream a vine was before me,
40:10 "and in the vine were three branches; it was as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes.
40:11 "Then Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand."
40:12 And Joseph said to him, "This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days.
40:13 "Now within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your place, and you will put Pharaoh's cup in his hand according to the former manner, when you were his butler.
40:14 "But remember me when it is well with you, and please show kindness to me; make mention of me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this house.
40:15 "For indeed I was stolen away from the land of the Hebrews; and also I have done nothing here that they should put me into the dungeon."
40:16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, "I also was in my dream, and there were three white baskets on my head.
40:17 "In the uppermost basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head."
40:18 So Joseph answered and said, "This is the interpretation of it: The three baskets are three days.
40:19 "Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head from you and hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from you."
40:20 Now it came to pass on the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants; and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.
40:21 Then he restored the chief butler to his butlership again, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand.
40:22 But he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.
40:23 Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.
41:1 Then it came to pass, at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh had a dream; and behold, he stood by the river.
41:2 Suddenly there came up out of the river seven cows, fine looking and fat; and they fed in the meadow.
41:3 Then behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the river, ugly and gaunt, and stood by the other cows on the bank of the river.
41:4 And the ugly and gaunt cows ate up the seven fine looking and fat cows. So Pharaoh awoke.
41:5 He slept and dreamed a second time; and suddenly seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, plump and good.
41:6 Then behold, seven thin heads, blighted by the east wind, sprang up after them.
41:7 And the seven thin heads devoured the seven plump and full heads. So Pharaoh awoke, and indeed, it was a dream.
41:8 Now it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men. And Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them for Pharaoh.
41:9 Then the chief butler spoke to Pharaoh, saying: "I remember my faults this day.
41:10 "When Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, both me and the chief baker,
41:11 "we each had a dream in one night, he and I. Each of us dreamed according to the interpretation of his own dream.
41:12 "Now there was a young Hebrew man with us there, a servant of the captain of the guard. And we told him, and he interpreted our dreams for us; to each man he interpreted according to his own dream.
41:13 "And it came to pass, just as he interpreted for us, so it happened. He restored me to my office, and he hanged him."
41:14 Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him quickly out of the dungeon; and he shaved, changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh.
41:15 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that you can understand a dream, to interpret it."
41:16 So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, "It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace."
41:17 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph: "Behold, in my dream I stood on the bank of the river.
41:18 "Suddenly seven cows came up out of the river, fine looking and fat; and they fed in the meadow.
41:19 "Then behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly and gaunt, such ugliness as I have never seen in all the land of Egypt.
41:20 "And the gaunt and ugly cows ate up the first seven, the fat cows.
41:21 "When they had eaten them up, no one would have known that they had eaten them, for they were just as ugly as at the beginning. So I awoke.
41:22 "Also I saw in my dream, and suddenly seven heads came up on one stalk, full and good.
41:23 "Then behold, seven heads, withered, thin, and blighted by the east wind, sprang up after them.
41:24 "And the thin heads devoured the seven good heads. So I told this to the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me."
41:25 Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dreams of Pharaoh are one; God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do:
41:26 "The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good heads are seven years; the dreams are one.
41:27 "And the seven thin and ugly cows which came up after them are seven years, and the seven empty heads blighted by the east wind are seven years of famine.
41:28 "This is the thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.
41:29 "Indeed seven years of great plenty will come throughout all the land of Egypt;
41:30 "but after them seven years of famine will arise, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine will deplete the land.
41:31 "So the plenty will not be known in the land because of the famine following, for it will be very severe.
41:32 "And the dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.
41:33 "Now therefore, let Pharaoh select a discerning and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt.
41:34 "Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, to collect one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven plentiful years.
41:35 "And let them gather all the food of those good years that are coming, and store up grain under the authority of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities.
41:36 "Then that food shall be as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the land may not perish during the famine."
41:37 So the advice was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants.
41:38 And Pharaoh said to his servants, "Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?"
41:39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you.
41:40 "You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you."
41:41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt."
41:42 Then Pharaoh took his signet ring off his hand and put it on Joseph's hand; and he clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck.
41:43 And he had him ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried out before him, "Bow the knee!" So he set him over all the land of Egypt.
41:44 Pharaoh also said to Joseph, "I am Pharaoh, and without your consent no man may lift his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt."
41:45 And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnath-Paaneah. And he gave him as a wife Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On. So Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.
41:46 Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.
41:47 Now in the seven plentiful years the ground brought forth abundantly.
41:48 So he gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities; he laid up in every city the food of the fields which surrounded them.
41:49 Joseph gathered very much grain, as the sand of the sea, until he stopped counting, for it was immeasurable.
41:50 And to Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On, bore to him.
41:51 Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: "For God has made me forget all my toil and all my father's house."
41:52 And the name of the second he called Ephraim: "For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction."
41:53 Then the seven years of plenty which were in the land of Egypt ended,
41:54 and the seven years of famine began to come, as Joseph had said. The famine was in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.
41:55 So when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Then Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, "Go to Joseph; whatever he says to you, do."
41:56 The famine was over all the face of the earth, and Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians. And the famine became severe in the land of Egypt.
41:57 So all countries came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all lands.
42:1 When Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, "Why do you look at one another?"
42:2 And he said, "Indeed I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down to that place and buy for us there, that we may live and not die."
42:3 So Joseph's ten brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt.
42:4 But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, "Lest some calamity befall him."
42:5 And the sons of Israel went to buy grain among those who journeyed, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
42:6 Now Joseph was governor over the land; and it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brothers came and bowed down before him with their faces to the earth.
42:7 Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he acted as a stranger to them and spoke roughly to them. Then he said to them, "Where do you come from?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan to buy food."
42:8 So Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.
42:9 Then Joseph remembered the dreams which he had dreamed about them, and said to them, "You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land!"
42:10 And they said to him, "No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food.
42:11 "We are all one man's sons; we are honest men; your servants are not spies."
42:12 But he said to them, "No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land."
42:13 And they said, "Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and in fact, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no more."
42:14 But Joseph said to them, "It is as I spoke to you, saying, 'You are spies!'
42:15 "In this manner you shall be tested: By the life of Pharaoh, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.
42:16 "Send one of you, and let him bring your brother; and you shall be kept in prison, that your words may be tested to see whether there is any truth in you; or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies!"
42:17 So he put them all together in prison three days.
42:18 Then Joseph said to them the third day, "Do this and live, for I fear God:
42:19 "If you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined to your prison house; but you, go and carry grain for the famine of your houses.
42:20 "And bring your youngest brother to me; so your words will be verified, and you shall not die." And they did so.
42:21 Then they said to one another, "We are truly guilty concerning our brother, for we saw the anguish of his soul when he pleaded with us, and we would not hear; therefore this distress has come upon us."
42:22 And Reuben answered them, saying, "Did I not speak to you, saying, 'Do not sin against the boy'; and you would not listen? Therefore behold, his blood is now required of us."
42:23 But they did not know that Joseph understood them, for he spoke to them through an interpreter.
42:24 And he turned himself away from them and wept. Then he returned to them again, and talked with them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.
42:25 Then Joseph gave a command to fill their sacks with grain, to restore every man's money to his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. Thus he did for them.
42:26 So they loaded their donkeys with the grain and departed from there.
42:27 But as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey feed at the encampment, he saw his money; and there it was, in the mouth of his sack.
42:28 So he said to his brothers, "My money has been restored, and there it is, in my sack!" Then their hearts failed them and they were afraid, saying to one another, "What is this that God has done to us?"
42:29 Then they went to Jacob their father in the land of Canaan and told him all that had happened to them, saying:
42:30 "The man who is lord of the land spoke roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.
42:31 "But we said to him, 'We are honest men; we are not spies.
42:32 'We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is with our father this day in the land of Canaan.'
42:33 "Then the man, the lord of the country, said to us, 'By this I will know that you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers here with me, take food for the famine of your households, and be gone.
42:34 'And bring your youngest brother to me; so I shall know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men. I will grant your brother to you, and you may trade in the land.' "
42:35 Then it happened as they emptied their sacks, that surprisingly each man's bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.
42:36 And Jacob their father said to them, "You have bereaved me: Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin. All these things are against me."
42:37 Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, "Kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you."
42:38 But he said, "My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is left alone. If any calamity should befall him along the way in which you go, then you would bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave."
43:1 Now the famine was severe in the land.
43:2 And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, "Go back, buy us a little food."
43:3 But Judah spoke to him, saying, "The man solemnly warned us, saying, 'You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.' "
43:4 "If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.
43:5 "But if you will not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, 'You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.' "
43:6 And Israel said, "Why did you deal so wrongfully with me as to tell the man whether you had still another brother?"
43:7 But they said, "The man asked us pointedly about ourselves and our family, saying, 'Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?' And we told him according to these words. Could we possibly have known that he would say, 'Bring your brother down'?"
43:8 Then Judah said to Israel his father, "Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, both we and you and also our little ones.
43:9 "I myself will be surety for him; from my hand you shall require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever.
43:10 "For if we had not lingered, surely by now we would have returned this second time."
43:11 And their father Israel said to them, "If it must be so, then do this: Take some of the best fruits of the land in your vessels and carry down a present for the man-a little balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.
43:12 "Take double money in your hand, and take back in your hand the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks; perhaps it was an oversight.
43:13 "Take your brother also, and arise, go back to the man.
43:14 "And may God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved, I am bereaved!"
43:15 So the men took that present and Benjamin, and they took double money in their hand, and arose and went down to Egypt; and they stood before Joseph.
43:16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, "Take these men to my home, and slaughter an animal and make ready; for these men will dine with me at noon."
43:17 Then the man did as Joseph ordered, and the man brought the men into Joseph's house.
43:18 Now the men were afraid because they were brought into Joseph's house; and they said, "It is because of the money, which was returned in our sacks the first time, that we are brought in, so that he may make a case against us and fall upon us, to take us as slaves with our donkeys."
43:19 When they drew near to the steward of Joseph's house, they talked with him at the door of the house,
43:20 and said, "O sir, we indeed came down the first time to buy food;
43:21 "but it happened, when we came to the encampment, that we opened our sacks, and there, each man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; so we have brought it back in our hand.
43:22 "And we have brought down other money in our hands to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks."
43:23 But he said, "Peace be with you, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money." Then he brought Simeon out to them.
43:24 So the man brought the men into Joseph's house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their donkeys feed.
43:25 Then they made the present ready for Joseph's coming at noon, for they heard that they would eat bread there.
43:26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed down before him to the earth.
43:27 Then he asked them about their well-being, and said, "Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?"
43:28 And they answered, "Your servant our father is in good health; he is still alive." And they bowed their heads down and prostrated themselves.
43:29 Then he lifted his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, "Is this your younger brother of whom you spoke to me?" And he said, "God be gracious to you, my son."
43:30 Now his heart yearned for his brother; so Joseph made haste and sought somewhere to weep. And he went into his chamber and wept there.
43:31 Then he washed his face and came out; and he restrained himself, and said, "Serve the bread."
43:32 So they set him a place by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat food with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.
43:33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth; and the men looked in astonishment at one another.
43:34 Then he took servings to them from before him, but Benjamin's serving was five times as much as any of theirs. So they drank and were merry with him.
44:1 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, "Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man's money in the mouth of his sack.
44:2 "Also put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, and his grain money." So he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.
44:3 As soon as the morning dawned, the men were sent away, they and their donkeys.
44:4 When they had gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Joseph said to his steward, "Get up, follow the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, 'Why have you repaid evil for good?
44:5 'Is not this the one from which my lord drinks, and with which he indeed practices divination? You have done evil in so doing.' "
44:6 So he overtook them, and he spoke to them these same words.
44:7 And they said to him, "Why does my lord say these words? Far be it from us that your servants should do such a thing.
44:8 "Look, we brought back to you from the land of Canaan the money which we found in the mouth of our sacks. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord's house?
44:9 "With whomever of your servants it is found, let him die, and we also will be my lord's slaves."
44:10 And he said, "Now also let it be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my slave, and you shall be blameless."
44:11 Then each man speedily let down his sack to the ground, and each opened his sack.
44:12 So he searched. He began with the oldest and left off with the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.
44:13 Then they tore their clothes, and each man loaded his donkey and returned to the city.
44:14 So Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house, and he was still there; and they fell before him on the ground.
44:15 And Joseph said to them, "What deed is this you have done? Did you not know that such a man as I can certainly practice divination?"
44:16 Then Judah said, "What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants; here we are, my lord's slaves, both we and he also with whom the cup was found."
44:17 But he said, "Far be it from me that I should do so; the man in whose hand the cup was found, he shall be my slave. And as for you, go up in peace to your father."
44:18 Then Judah came near to him and said: "O my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord's hearing, and do not let your anger burn against your servant; for you are even like Pharaoh.
44:19 "My lord asked his servants, saying, 'Have you a father or a brother?'
44:20 "And we said to my lord, 'We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, who is young; his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother's children, and his father loves him.'
44:21 "Then you said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.'
44:22 "And we said to my lord, 'The lad cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.'
44:23 "But you said to your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.'
44:24 "So it was, when we went up to your servant my father, that we told him the words of my lord.
44:25 "And our father said, 'Go back and buy us a little food.'
44:26 "But we said, 'We cannot go down; if our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down; for we may not see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.'
44:27 "Then your servant my father said to us, 'You know that my wife bore me two sons;
44:28 'and the one went out from me, and I said, "Surely he is torn to pieces"; and I have not seen him since.
44:29 'But if you take this one also from me, and calamity befalls him, you shall bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.'
44:30 "Now therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, since his life is bound up in the lad's life,
44:31 "it will happen, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die. So your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant our father with sorrow to the grave.
44:32 "For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father forever.'
44:33 "Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the lad as a slave to my lord, and let the lad go up with his brothers.
44:34 "For how shall I go up to my father if the lad is not with me, lest perhaps I see the evil that would come upon my father?"
45:1 Then Joseph could not restrain himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, "Make everyone go out from me!" So no one stood with him while Joseph made himself known to his brothers.
45:2 And he wept aloud, and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard it.
45:3 Then Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph; does my father still live?" But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed in his presence.
45:4 And Joseph said to his brothers, "Please come near to me." So they came near. Then he said: "I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt.
45:5 "But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.
45:6 "For these two years the famine has been in the land, and there are still five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvesting.
45:7 "And God sent me before you to preserve a posterity for you in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.
45:8 "So now it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.
45:9 "Hurry and go up to my father, and say to him, 'Thus says your son Joseph: "God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not tarry.
45:10 "You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near to me, you and your children, your children's children, your flocks and your herds, and all that you have.
45:11 "There I will provide for you, lest you and your household, and all that you have, come to poverty; for there are still five years of famine." '
45:12 "And behold, your eyes and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see that it is my mouth that speaks to you.
45:13 "So you shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that you have seen; and you shall hurry and bring my father down here."
45:14 Then he fell on his brother Benjamin's neck and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck.
45:15 Moreover he kissed all his brothers and wept over them, and after that his brothers talked with him.
45:16 Now the report of it was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying, "Joseph's brothers have come." So it pleased Pharaoh and his servants well.
45:17 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Say to your brothers, 'Do this: Load your animals and depart; go to the land of Canaan.
45:18 'Bring your father and your households and come to me; I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you will eat the fat of the land.
45:19 'Now you are commanded-do this: Take carts out of the land of Egypt for your little ones and your wives; bring your father and come.
45:20 'Also do not be concerned about your goods, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.' "
45:21 Then the sons of Israel did so; and Joseph gave them carts, according to the command of Pharaoh, and he gave them provisions for the journey.
45:22 He gave to all of them, to each man, changes of garments; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and five changes of garments.
45:23 And he sent to his father these things: ten donkeys loaded with the good things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain, bread, and food for his father for the journey.
45:24 So he sent his brothers away, and they departed; and he said to them, "See that you do not become troubled along the way."
45:25 Then they went up out of Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan to Jacob their father.
45:26 And they told him, saying, "Joseph is still alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt." And Jacob's heart stood still, because he did not believe them.
45:27 But when they told him all the words which Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived.
45:28 Then Israel said, "It is enough. Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die."
46:1 So Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.
46:2 Then God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, "Jacob, Jacob!" And he said, "Here I am."
46:3 So He said, "I am God, the God of your father; do not fear to go down to Egypt, for I will make of you a great nation there.
46:4 "I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again; and Joseph will put his hand on your eyes."
46:5 Then Jacob arose from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob, their little ones, and their wives, in the carts which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.
46:6 So they took their livestock and their goods, which they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and went to Egypt, Jacob and all his descendants with him.
46:7 His sons and his sons' sons, his daughters and his sons' daughters, and all his descendants he brought with him to Egypt.
46:8 Now these were the names of the children of Israel, Jacob and his sons, who went to Egypt: Reuben was Jacob's firstborn.
46:9 The sons of Reuben were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
46:10 The sons of Simeon were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman.
46:11 The sons of Levi were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
46:12 The sons of Judah were Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
46:13 The sons of Issachar were Tola, Puvah, Job, and Shimron.
46:14 The sons of Zebulun were Sered, Elon, and Jahleel.
46:15 These were the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Padan Aram, with his daughter Dinah. All the persons, his sons and his daughters, were thirty-three.
46:16 The sons of Gad were Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.
46:17 The sons of Asher were Jimnah, Ishuah, Isui, Beriah, and Serah, their sister. And the sons of Beriah were Heber and Malchiel.
46:18 These were the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter; and these she bore to Jacob: sixteen persons.
46:19 The sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife, were Joseph and Benjamin.
46:20 And to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On, bore to him.
46:21 The sons of Benjamin were Belah, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.
46:22 These were the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob: fourteen persons in all.
46:23 The son of Dan was Hushim.
46:24 The sons of Naphtali were Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.
46:25 These were the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and she bore these to Jacob: seven persons in all.
46:26 All the persons who went with Jacob to Egypt, who came from his body, besides Jacob's sons' wives, were sixty-six persons in all.
46:27 And the sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt were two persons. All the persons of the house of Jacob who went to Egypt were seventy.
46:28 Then he sent Judah before him to Joseph, to point out before him the way to Goshen. And they came to the land of Goshen.
46:29 So Joseph made ready his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel; and he presented himself to him, and fell on his neck and wept on his neck a good while.
46:30 And Israel said to Joseph, "Now let me die, since I have seen your face, because you are still alive."
46:31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's household, "I will go up and tell Pharaoh, and say to him, 'My brothers and those of my father's house, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me.
46:32 'And the men are shepherds, for their occupation has been to feed livestock; and they have brought their flocks, their herds, and all that they have.'
46:33 "So it shall be, when Pharaoh calls you and says, 'What is your occupation?'
46:34 "that you shall say, 'Your servants' occupation has been with livestock from our youth even till now, both we and also our fathers,' that you may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians."
47:1 Then Joseph went and told Pharaoh, and said, "My father and my brothers, their flocks and their herds and all that they possess, have come from the land of Canaan; and indeed they are in the land of Goshen."
47:2 And he took five men from among his brothers and presented them to Pharaoh.
47:3 Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, "What is your occupation?" And they said to Pharaoh, "Your servants are shepherds, both we and also our fathers."
47:4 And they said to Pharaoh, "We have come to dwell in the land, because your servants have no pasture for their flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen."
47:5 Then Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, "Your father and your brothers have come to you.
47:6 "The land of Egypt is before you. Have your father and brothers dwell in the best of the land; let them dwell in the land of Goshen. And if you know any competent men among them, then make them chief herdsmen over my livestock."
47:7 Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and set him before Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
47:8 Pharaoh said to Jacob, "How old are you?"
47:9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my pilgrimage
are one hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have
not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the
days of their pilgrimage."
47:10 So Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.
47:11 And Joseph situated his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
47:12 Then Joseph provided his father, his brothers, and all his father's household with bread, according to the number in their families.
47:13 Now there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine.
47:14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house.
47:15 So when the money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, "Give us bread, for why should we die in your presence? For the money has failed."
47:16 Then Joseph said, "Give your livestock, and I will give you bread for your livestock, if the money is gone."
47:17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the cattle of the herds, and for the donkeys. Thus he fed them with bread in exchange for all their livestock that year.
47:18 When that year had ended, they came to him the next year and said to him, "We will not hide from my lord that our money is gone; my lord also has our herds of livestock. There is nothing left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our lands.
47:19 "Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants of Pharaoh; give us seed, that we may live and not die, that the land may not be desolate."
47:20 Then Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for every man of the Egyptians sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. So the land became Pharaoh's.
47:21 And as for the people, he moved them into the cities, from one end of the borders of Egypt to the other end.
47:22 Only the land of the priests he did not buy; for the priests had rations allotted to them by Pharaoh, and they ate their rations which Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their lands.
47:23 Then Joseph said to the people, "Indeed I have bought you and your land this day for Pharaoh. Look, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land.
47:24 "And it shall come to pass in the harvest that you shall give one-fifth to Pharaoh. Four-fifths shall be your own, as seed for the field and for your food, for those of your households and as food for your little ones."
47:25 So they said, "You have saved our lives; let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants."
47:26 And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have one-fifth, except for the land of the priests only, which did not become Pharaoh's.
47:27 So Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions there and grew and multiplied exceedingly.
47:28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the length of Jacob's life was one hundred and forty-seven years.
47:29 When the time drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, "Now if I have found favor in your sight, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me. Please do not bury me in Egypt,
47:30 "but let me lie with my fathers; you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place." And he said, "I will do as you have said."
47:31 Then he said, "Swear to me." And he swore to him. So Israel bowed himself on the head of the bed.
48:1 Now it came to pass after these things that Joseph was told, "Indeed your father is sick"; and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.
48:2 And Jacob was told, "Look, your son Joseph is coming to you"; and Israel strengthened himself and sat up on the bed.
48:3 Then Jacob said to Joseph: "God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me,
48:4 "and said to me, 'Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a multitude of people, and give this land to your descendants after you as an everlasting possession.'
48:5 "And now your two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.
48:6 "Your offspring whom you beget after them shall be yours; they will be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance.
48:7 "But as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died beside me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem)."
48:8 Then Israel saw Joseph's sons, and said, "Who are these?"
48:9 And Joseph said to his father, "They are my sons, whom God has given me in this place." And he said, "Please bring them to me, and I will bless them."
48:10 Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. Then Joseph brought them near him, and he kissed them and embraced them.
48:11 And Israel said to Joseph, "I had not thought to see your face; but in fact, God has also shown me your offspring!"
48:12 So Joseph brought them from beside his knees, and he bowed down with his face to the earth.
48:13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near him.
48:14 Then Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh's head, guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the firstborn.
48:15 And he blessed Joseph, and said:"God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,The God who has fed me all my life long to this day,
48:16 The Angel who has redeemed me from all evil,Bless the lads;Let my name be named upon them,And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;And let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth."
48:17 Now when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; so he took hold of his father's hand to remove it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head.
48:18 And Joseph said to his father, "Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head."
48:19 But his father refused and said, "I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations."
48:20 So he blessed them that day, saying, "By you Israel will bless, saying, 'May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!' " And thus he set Ephraim before Manasseh.
48:21 Then Israel said to Joseph, "Behold, I am dying, but God will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers.
48:22 "Moreover I have given to you one portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow."
49:1 And Jacob called his sons and said, "Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days:
49:2 "Gather together and hear, you sons of Jacob,And listen to Israel your father.
49:3 "Reuben, you are my firstborn,My might and the beginning of my strength,The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.
49:4 Unstable as water, you shall not excel,Because you went up to your father's bed;Then you defiled it-He went up to my couch.
49:5 "Simeon and Levi are brothers;Instruments of cruelty are in their dwelling place.
49:6 Let not my soul enter their council;Let not my honor be united to their assembly;For in their anger they slew a man,And in their self-will they hamstrung an ox.
49:7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;And their wrath, for it is cruel!I will divide them in JacobAnd scatter them in Israel.
49:8 "Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise;Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;Your father's children shall bow down before you.
49:9 Judah is a lion's whelp;From the prey, my son, you have gone up.He bows down, he lies down as a lion;And as a lion, who shall rouse him?
49:10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah,Nor a lawgiver from between his feet,Until Shiloh comes;And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.
49:11 Binding his donkey to the vine,And his donkey's colt to the choice vine,He washed his garments in wine,And his clothes in the blood of grapes.
49:12 His eyes are darker than wine,And his teeth whiter than milk.
49:13 "Zebulun shall dwell by the haven of the sea;He shall become a haven for ships,And his border shall adjoin Sidon.
49:14 "Issachar is a strong donkey,Lying down between two burdens;
49:15 He saw that rest was good,And that the land was pleasant;He bowed his shoulder to bear a burden,And became a band of slaves.
49:16 "Dan shall judge his peopleAs one of the tribes of Israel.
49:17 Dan shall be a serpent by the way,A viper by the path,That bites the horse's heelsSo that its rider shall fall backward.
49:18 I have waited for your salvation, O Lord!
49:19 "Gad, a troop shall tramp upon him,But he shall triumph at last.
49:20 "Bread from Asher shall be rich,And he shall yield royal dainties.
49:21 "Naphtali is a deer let loose;He uses beautiful words.
49:22 "Joseph is a fruitful bough,A fruitful bough by a well;His branches run over the wall.
49:23 The archers have bitterly grieved him,Shot at him and hated him.
49:24 But his bow remained in strength,And the arms of his hands were made strongBy the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob(From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel),
49:25 By the God of your father who will help you,And by the Almighty who will bless youWith blessings of heaven above,Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
49:26 The blessings of your fatherHave excelled the blessings of my ancestors,Up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills.They shall be on the head of Joseph,And on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.
49:27 "Benjamin is a ravenous wolf;In the morning he shall devour the prey,And at night he shall divide the spoil."
49:28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them. And he blessed them; he blessed each one according to his own blessing.
49:29 Then he charged them and said to them: "I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,
49:30 "in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite as a possession for a burial place.
49:31 "There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife, there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah.
49:32 "The field and the cave that is there were purchased from the sons of Heth."
49:33 And when Jacob had finished commanding his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.
50:1 Then Joseph fell on his father's face, and wept over him, and kissed him.
50:2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel.
50:3 Forty days were required for him, for such are the days required for those who are embalmed; and the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.
50:4 And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the hearing of Pharaoh, saying,
50:5 'My father made me swear, saying, "Behold, I am dying; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me." Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come back.' "
50:6 And Pharaoh said, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear."
50:7 So Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
50:8 as well as all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father's house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds they left in the land of Goshen.
50:9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen, and it was a very great gathering.
50:10 Then they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they mourned there with a great and very solemn lamentation. He observed seven days of mourning for his father.
50:11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a deep mourning of the Egyptians." Therefore its name was called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.
50:12 So his sons did for him just as he had commanded them.
50:13 For his sons carried him to the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite as property for a burial place.
50:14 And after he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers and all who went up with him to bury his father.
50:15 When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "Perhaps Joseph will hate us, and may actually repay us for all the evil which we did to him."
50:16 So they sent messengers to Joseph, saying, "Before your father died he commanded, saying,
50:17 'Thus you shall say to Joseph: "I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your brothers and their sin; for they did evil to you." ' Now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father." And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
50:18 Then his brothers also went and fell down before his face, and they said, "Behold, we are your servants."
50:19 Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God?
50:20 "But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.
50:21 "Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones." And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
50:22 So Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father's household. And Joseph lived one hundred and ten years.
50:23 Joseph saw Ephraim's children to the third generation. The children of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were also brought up on Joseph's knees.
50:24 And Joseph said to his brethren, "I am dying; but God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land to the land of which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob."
50:25 Then Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, "God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here."
50:26 So Joseph died, being one hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
