◆契約と割礼
17:1 アブラムが九十九歳になったとき、主はアブラムに現れて言われた。「わたしは全能の神である。あなたはわたしに従って歩み、全き者となりなさい。
17:2 わたしは、あなたとの間にわたしの契約を立て、あなたをますます増やすであろう。」
17:3 アブラムはひれ伏した。神は更に、語りかけて言われた。
17:4 「これがあなたと結ぶわたしの契約である。あなたは多くの国民の父となる。
17:5 あなたは、もはやアブラムではなく、アブラハムと名乗りなさい。あなたを多くの国民の父とするからである。
17:6 わたしは、あなたをますます繁栄させ、諸国民の父とする。王となる者たちがあなたから出るであろう。
17:7 わたしは、あなたとの間に、また後に続く子孫との間に契約を立て、それを永遠の契約とする。そして、あなたとあなたの子孫の神となる。
17:8 わたしは、あなたが滞在しているこのカナンのすべての土地を、あなたとその子孫に、永久の所有地として与える。わたしは彼らの神となる。」
17:9 神はまた、アブラハムに言われた。「だからあなたも、わたしの契約を守りなさい、あなたも後に続く子孫も。
17:10 あなたたち、およびあなたの後に続く子孫と、わたしとの間で守るべき契約はこれである。すなわち、あなたたちの男子はすべて、割礼を受ける。
17:11 包皮の部分を切り取りなさい。これが、わたしとあなたたちとの間の契約のしるしとなる。
17:12 いつの時代でも、あなたたちの男子はすべて、直系の子孫はもちろんのこと、家で生まれた奴隷も、外国人から買い取った奴隷であなたの子孫でない者も皆、生まれてから八日目に割礼を受けなければならない。
17:13 あなたの家で生まれた奴隷も、買い取った奴隷も、必ず割礼を受けなければならない。それによって、わたしの契約はあなたの体に記されて永遠の契約となる。
17:14 包皮の部分を切り取らない無割礼の男がいたなら、その人は民の間から断たれる。わたしの契約を破ったからである。」
17:15 神はアブラハムに言われた。「あなたの妻サライは、名前をサライではなく、サラと呼びなさい。
17:16 わたしは彼女を祝福し、彼女によってあなたに男の子を与えよう。わたしは彼女を祝福し、諸国民の母とする。諸民族の王となる者たちが彼女から出る。」
17:17 アブラハムはひれ伏した。しかし笑って、ひそかに言った。「百歳の男に子供が生まれるだろうか。九十歳のサラに子供が産めるだろうか。」
17:18 アブラハムは神に言った。「どうか、イシュマエルが御前に生き永らえますように。」
17:19 神は言われた。「いや、あなたの妻サラがあなたとの間に男の子を産む。その子をイサク（彼は笑う）と名付けなさい。わたしは彼と契約を立て、彼の子孫のために永遠の契約とする。
17:20 イシュマエルについての願いも聞き入れよう。必ず、わたしは彼を祝福し、大いに子供を増やし繁栄させる。彼は十二人の首長の父となろう。わたしは彼を大いなる国民とする。
17:21 しかし、わたしの契約は、来年の今ごろ、サラがあなたとの間に産むイサクと立てる。」
17:22 神はこう語り終えると、アブラハムを離れて昇って行かれた。
17:23 アブラハムは、息子のイシュマエルをはじめ、家で生まれた奴隷や買い取った奴隷など、自分の家にいる人々のうち、男子を皆集めて、すぐその日に、神が命じられたとおり包皮に割礼を施した。
17:24 アブラハムが包皮に割礼を受けたのは、九十九歳、
17:25 息子イシュマエルが包皮に割礼を受けたのは、十三歳であった。
17:26 アブラハムと息子のイシュマエルは、すぐその日に割礼を受けた。
17:27 アブラハムの家の男子は、家で生まれた奴隷も外国人から買い取った奴隷も皆、共に割礼を受けた。
◆イサクの誕生の予告
18:1 主はマムレの樫の木の所でアブラハムに現れた。暑い真昼に、アブラハムは天幕の入り口に座っていた。
18:2 目を上げて見ると、三人の人が彼に向かって立っていた。アブラハムはすぐに天幕の入り口から走り出て迎え、地にひれ伏して、
18:3 言った。「お客様、よろしければ、どうか、僕のもとを通り過ぎないでください。
18:4 水を少々持って来させますから、足を洗って、木陰でどうぞひと休みなさってください。
18:5 何か召し上がるものを調えますので、疲れをいやしてから、お出かけください。せっかく、僕の所の近くをお通りになったのですから。」その人たちは言った。「では、お言葉どおりにしましょう。」
18:6 アブラハムは急いで天幕に戻り、サラのところに来て言った。「早く、上等の小麦粉を三セアほどこねて、パン菓子をこしらえなさい。」
18:7 アブラハムは牛の群れのところへ走って行き、柔らかくておいしそうな子牛を選び、召し使いに渡し、急いで料理させた。
18:8 アブラハムは、凝乳、乳、出来立ての子牛の料理などを運び、彼らの前に並べた。そして、彼らが木陰で食事をしている間、そばに立って給仕をした。
18:9 彼らはアブラハムに尋ねた。「あなたの妻のサラはどこにいますか。」「はい、天幕の中におります」とアブラハムが答えると、
18:10 彼らの一人が言った。「わたしは来年の今ごろ、必ずここにまた来ますが、そのころには、あなたの妻のサラに男の子が生まれているでしょう。」サラは、すぐ後ろの天幕の入り口で聞いていた。
18:11 アブラハムもサラも多くの日を重ねて老人になっており、しかもサラは月のものがとうになくなっていた。
18:12 サラはひそかに笑った。自分は年をとり、もはや楽しみがあるはずもなし、主人も年老いているのに、と思ったのである。
18:13 主はアブラハムに言われた。「なぜサラは笑ったのか。なぜ年をとった自分に子供が生まれるはずがないと思ったのだ。
18:14 主に不可能なことがあろうか。来年の今ごろ、わたしはここに戻ってくる。そのころ、サラには必ず男の子が生まれている。」
18:15 サラは恐ろしくなり、打ち消して言った。「わたしは笑いませんでした。」主は言われた。「いや、あなたは確かに笑った。」
◆ソドムのための執り成し
18:16 その人たちはそこを立って、ソドムを見下ろす所まで来た。アブラハムも、彼らを見送るために一緒に行った。
18:17 主は言われた。「わたしが行おうとしていることをアブラハムに隠す必要があろうか。
18:18 アブラハムは大きな強い国民になり、世界のすべての国民は彼によって祝福に入る。
18:19 わたしがアブラハムを選んだのは、彼が息子たちとその子孫に、主の道を守り、主に従って正義を行うよう命じて、主がアブラハムに約束したことを成就するためである。」
18:20 主は言われた。「ソドムとゴモラの罪は非常に重い、と訴える叫びが実に大きい。
18:21 わたしは降って行き、彼らの行跡が、果たして、わたしに届いた叫びのとおりかどうか見て確かめよう。」
18:22 その人たちは、更にソドムの方へ向かったが、アブラハムはなお、主の御前にいた。
18:23 アブラハムは進み出て言った。「まことにあなたは、正しい者を悪い者と一緒に滅ぼされるのですか。
18:24 あの町に正しい者が五十人いるとしても、それでも滅ぼし、その五十人の正しい者のために、町をお赦しにはならないのですか。
18:25 正しい者を悪い者と一緒に殺し、正しい者を悪い者と同じ目に遭わせるようなことを、あなたがなさるはずはございません。全くありえないことです。全世界を裁くお方は、正義を行われるべきではありませんか。」
18:26 主は言われた。「もしソドムの町に正しい者が五十人いるならば、その者たちのために、町全部を赦そう。」
18:27 アブラハムは答えた。「塵あくたにすぎないわたしですが、あえて、わが主に申し上げます。
18:28 もしかすると、五十人の正しい者に五人足りないかもしれません。それでもあなたは、五人足りないために、町のすべてを滅ぼされますか。」主は言われた。「もし、四十五人いれば滅ぼさない。」
18:29 アブラハムは重ねて言った。「もしかすると、四十人しかいないかもしれません。」主は言われた。「その四十人のためにわたしはそれをしない。」
18:30 アブラハムは言った。「主よ、どうかお怒りにならずに、もう少し言わせてください。もしかすると、そこには三十人しかいないかもしれません。」主は言われた。「もし三十人いるならわたしはそれをしない。」
18:31 アブラハムは言った。「あえて、わが主に申し上げます。もしかすると、二十人しかいないかもしれません。」主は言われた。「その二十人のためにわたしは滅ぼさない。」
18:32 アブラハムは言った。「主よ、どうかお怒りにならずに、もう一度だけ言わせてください。もしかすると、十人しかいないかもしれません。」主は言われた。「その十人のためにわたしは滅ぼさない。」
18:33 主はアブラハムと語り終えると、去って行かれた。アブラハムも自分の住まいに帰った。
◆ソドムの滅亡
19:1 二人の御使いが夕方ソドムに着いたとき、ロトはソドムの門の所に座っていた。ロトは彼らを見ると、立ち上がって迎え、地にひれ伏して、
19:2 言った。「皆様方、どうぞ僕の家に立ち寄り、足を洗ってお泊まりください。そして、明日の朝早く起きて出立なさってください。」彼らは言った。「いや、結構です。わたしたちはこの広場で夜を過ごします。」
19:3 しかし、ロトがぜひにと勧めたので、彼らはロトの所に立ち寄ることにし、彼の家を訪ねた。ロトは、酵母を入れないパンを焼いて食事を供し、彼らをもてなした。
19:4 彼らがまだ床に就かないうちに、ソドムの町の男たちが、若者も年寄りもこぞって押しかけ、家を取り囲んで、
19:5 わめきたてた。「今夜、お前のところへ来た連中はどこにいる。ここへ連れて来い。なぶりものにしてやるから。」
19:6 ロトは、戸口の前にたむろしている男たちのところへ出て行き、後ろの戸を閉めて、
19:7 言った。「どうか、皆さん、乱暴なことはしないでください。
19:8 実は、わたしにはまだ嫁がせていない娘が二人おります。皆さんにその娘たちを差し出しますから、好きなようにしてください。ただ、あの方々には何もしないでください。この家の屋根の下に身を寄せていただいたのですから。」
19:9 男たちは口々に言った。「そこをどけ。」「こいつは、よそ者のくせに、指図などして。」「さあ、彼らより先に、お前を痛い目に遭わせてやる。」そして、ロトに詰め寄って体を押しつけ、戸を破ろうとした。
19:10 二人の客はそのとき、手を伸ばして、ロトを家の中に引き入れて戸を閉め、
19:11 戸口の前にいる男たちに、老若を問わず、目つぶしを食わせ、戸口を分からなくした。
19:12 二人の客はロトに言った。「ほかに、あなたの身内の人がこの町にいますか。あなたの婿や息子や娘などを皆連れてここから逃げなさい。
19:13 実は、わたしたちはこの町を滅ぼしに来たのです。大きな叫びが主のもとに届いたので、主は、この町を滅ぼすためにわたしたちを遣わされたのです。」
19:14 ロトは嫁いだ娘たちの婿のところへ行き、「さあ早く、ここから逃げるのだ。主がこの町を滅ぼされるからだ」と促したが、婿たちは冗談だと思った。
19:15 夜が明けるころ、御使いたちはロトをせきたてて言った。「さあ早く、あなたの妻とここにいる二人の娘を連れて行きなさい。さもないと、この町に下る罰の巻き添えになって滅ぼされてしまう。」
19:16 ロトはためらっていた。主は憐れんで、二人の客にロト、妻、二人の娘の手をとらせて町の外へ避難するようにされた。
19:17 彼らがロトたちを町外れへ連れ出したとき、主は言われた。「命がけで逃れよ。後ろを振り返ってはいけない。低地のどこにもとどまるな。山へ逃げなさい。さもないと、滅びることになる。」
19:18 ロトは言った。「主よ、できません。
19:19 あなたは僕に目を留め、慈しみを豊かに示し、命を救おうとしてくださいます。しかし、わたしは山まで逃げ延びることはできません。恐らく、災害に巻き込まれて、死んでしまうでしょう。
19:20 御覧ください、あの町を。あそこなら近いので、逃げて行けると思います。あれは小さな町です。あそこへ逃げさせてください。あれはほんの小さな町です。どうか、そこでわたしの命を救ってください。」
19:21 主は言われた。「よろしい。そのこともあなたの願いを聞き届け、あなたの言うその町は滅ぼさないことにしよう。
19:22 急いで逃げなさい。あなたがあの町に着くまでは、わたしは何も行わないから。」そこで、その町はツォアル（小さい）と名付けられた。
19:23 太陽が地上に昇ったとき、ロトはツォアルに着いた。
19:24 主はソドムとゴモラの上に天から、主のもとから硫黄の火を降らせ、
19:25 これらの町と低地一帯を、町の全住民、地の草木もろとも滅ぼした。
19:26 ロトの妻は後ろを振り向いたので、塩の柱になった。
19:27 アブラハムは、その朝早く起きて、さきに主と対面した場所へ行き、
19:28 ソドムとゴモラ、および低地一帯を見下ろすと、炉の煙のように地面から煙が立ち上っていた。
19:29 こうして、ロトの住んでいた低地の町々は滅ぼされたが、神はアブラハムを御心に留め、ロトを破滅のただ中から救い出された。
◆ロトの娘たち
19:30 ロトはツォアルを出て、二人の娘と山の中に住んだ。ツォアルに住むのを恐れたからである。彼は洞穴に二人の娘と住んだ。
19:31 姉は妹に言った。「父も年老いてきました。この辺りには、世のしきたりに従って、わたしたちのところへ来てくれる男の人はいません。
19:32 さあ、父にぶどう酒を飲ませ、床を共にし、父から子種を受けましょう。」
19:33 娘たちはその夜、父親にぶどう酒を飲ませ、姉がまず、父親のところへ入って寝た。父親は、娘が寝に来たのも立ち去ったのも気がつかなかった。
19:34 あくる日、姉は妹に言った。「わたしは夕べ父と寝ました。今晩も父にぶどう酒を飲ませて、あなたが行って父と床を共にし、父から子種をいただきましょう。」
19:35 娘たちはその夜もまた、父親にぶどう酒を飲ませ、妹が父親のところへ行って寝た。父親は、娘が寝に来たのも立ち去ったのも気がつかなかった。
19:36 このようにして、ロトの二人の娘は父の子を身ごもり、
19:37 やがて、姉は男の子を産み、モアブ（父親より）と名付けた。彼は今日のモアブ人の先祖である。
19:38 妹もまた男の子を産み、ベン・アミ（わたしの肉親の子）と名付けた。彼は今日のアンモンの人々の先祖である。
◆ゲラル滞在
20:1 アブラハムは、そこからネゲブ地方へ移り、カデシュとシュルの間に住んだ。ゲラルに滞在していたとき、
20:2 アブラハムは妻サラのことを、「これはわたしの妹です」と言ったので、ゲラルの王アビメレクは使いをやってサラを召し入れた。
20:3 その夜、夢の中でアビメレクに神が現れて言われた。「あなたは、召し入れた女のゆえに死ぬ。その女は夫のある身だ。」
20:4 アビメレクは、まだ彼女に近づいていなかったので、「主よ、あなたは正しい者でも殺されるのですか。
20:5 彼女が妹だと言ったのは彼ではありませんか。また彼女自身も、『あの人はわたしの兄です』と言いました。わたしは、全くやましい考えも不正な手段でもなくこの事をしたのです」と言った。
20:6 神は夢の中でアビメレクに言われた。「わたしも、あなたが全くやましい考えでなしにこの事をしたことは知っている。だからわたしも、あなたがわたしに対して罪を犯すことのないように、彼女に触れさせなかったのだ。
20:7 直ちに、あの人の妻を返しなさい。彼は預言者だから、あなたのために祈り、命を救ってくれるだろう。しかし、もし返さなければ、あなたもあなたの家来も皆、必ず死ぬことを覚悟せねばならない。」
20:8 次の朝早く、アビメレクは家来たちを残らず呼び集め、一切の出来事を語り聞かせたので、一同は非常に恐れた。
20:9 アビメレクはそれから、アブラハムを呼んで言った。「あなたは我々に何ということをしたのか。わたしがあなたにどんな罪を犯したというので、あなたはわたしとわたしの王国に大それた罪を犯させようとしたのか。あなたは、してはならぬことをわたしにしたのだ。」
20:10 アビメレクは更に、アブラハムに言った。「どういうつもりで、こんなことをしたのか。」
20:11 アブラハムは答えた。「この土地には、神を畏れることが全くないので、わたしは妻のゆえに殺されると思ったのです。
20:12 事実、彼女は、わたしの妹でもあるのです。わたしの父の娘ですが、母の娘ではないのです。それで、わたしの妻となったのです。
20:13 かつて、神がわたしを父の家から離して、さすらいの旅に出されたとき、わたしは妻に、『わたしに尽くすと思って、どこへ行っても、わたしのことを、この人は兄ですと言ってくれないか』と頼んだのです。」
20:14 アビメレクは羊、牛、男女の奴隷などを取ってアブラハムに与え、また、妻サラを返して、
20:15 言った。「この辺りはすべてわたしの領土です。好きな所にお住まいください。」
20:16 また、サラに言った。「わたしは、銀一千シェケルをあなたの兄上に贈りました。それは、あなたとの間のすべての出来事の疑惑を晴らす証拠です。これであなたの名誉は取り戻されるでしょう。」
20:17 アブラハムが神に祈ると、神はアビメレクとその妻、および侍女たちをいやされたので、再び子供を産むことができるようになった。
20:18 主がアブラハムの妻サラのゆえに、アビメレクの宮廷のすべての女たちの胎を堅く閉ざしておられたからである。
◆イサクの誕生
21:1 主は、約束されたとおりサラを顧み、さきに語られたとおりサラのために行われたので、
21:2 彼女は身ごもり、年老いたアブラハムとの間に男の子を産んだ。それは、神が約束されていた時期であった。
21:3 アブラハムは、サラが産んだ自分の子をイサクと名付け、
21:4 神が命じられたとおり、八日目に、息子イサクに割礼を施した。
21:5 息子イサクが生まれたとき、アブラハムは百歳であった。
21:6 サラは言った。「神はわたしに笑いをお与えになった。聞く者は皆、わたしと笑い（イサク）を／共にしてくれるでしょう。」
21:7 サラはまた言った。「誰がアブラハムに言いえたでしょう／サラは子に乳を含ませるだろうと。しかしわたしは子を産みました／年老いた夫のために。」
21:8 やがて、子供は育って乳離れした。アブラハムはイサクの乳離れの日に盛大な祝宴を開いた。
◆ハガルとイシュマエル
21:9 サラは、エジプトの女ハガルがアブラハムとの間に産んだ子が、イサクをからかっているのを見て、
21:10 アブラハムに訴えた。「あの女とあの子を追い出してください。あの女の息子は、わたしの子イサクと同じ跡継ぎとなるべきではありません。」
21:11 このことはアブラハムを非常に苦しめた。その子も自分の子であったからである。
21:12 神はアブラハムに言われた。「あの子供とあの女のことで苦しまなくてもよい。すべてサラが言うことに聞き従いなさい。あなたの子孫はイサクによって伝えられる。
21:13 しかし、あの女の息子も一つの国民の父とする。彼もあなたの子であるからだ。」
21:14 アブラハムは、次の朝早く起き、パンと水の革袋を取ってハガルに与え、背中に負わせて子供を連れ去らせた。ハガルは立ち去り、ベエル・シェバの荒れ野をさまよった。
21:15 革袋の水が無くなると、彼女は子供を一本の灌木の下に寝かせ、
21:16 「わたしは子供が死ぬのを見るのは忍びない」と言って、矢の届くほど離れ、子供の方を向いて座り込んだ。彼女は子供の方を向いて座ると、声をあげて泣いた。
21:17 神は子供の泣き声を聞かれ、天から神の御使いがハガルに呼びかけて言った。「ハガルよ、どうしたのか。恐れることはない。神はあそこにいる子供の泣き声を聞かれた。
21:18 立って行って、あの子を抱き上げ、お前の腕でしっかり抱き締めてやりなさい。わたしは、必ずあの子を大きな国民とする。」
21:19 神がハガルの目を開かれたので、彼女は水のある井戸を見つけた。彼女は行って革袋に水を満たし、子供に飲ませた。
21:20 神がその子と共におられたので、その子は成長し、荒れ野に住んで弓を射る者となった。
21:21 彼がパランの荒れ野に住んでいたとき、母は彼のために妻をエジプトの国から迎えた。
◆アビメレクとの契約
21:22 そのころ、アビメレクとその軍隊の長ピコルはアブラハムに言った。「神は、あなたが何をなさっても、あなたと共におられます。
21:23 どうか、今ここでわたしとわたしの子、わたしの孫を欺かないと、神にかけて誓って（シャバ）ください。わたしがあなたに友好的な態度をとってきたように、あなたも、寄留しているこの国とわたしに友好的な態度をとってください。」
21:24 アブラハムは答えた。「よろしい、誓いましょう。」
21:25 アブラハムはアビメレクの部下たちが井戸を奪ったことについて、アビメレクを責めた。
21:26 アビメレクは言った。「そんなことをした者がいたとは知りませんでした。あなたも告げなかったし、わたしも今日まで聞いていなかったのです。」
21:27 アブラハムは、羊と牛の群れを連れて来て、アビメレクに贈り、二人は契約を結んだ。
21:28 アブラハムは更に、羊の群れの中から七匹（シェバ）の雌の小羊を別にしたので、
21:29 アビメレクがアブラハムに尋ねた。「この七匹の雌の小羊を別にしたのは、何のためですか。」
21:30 アブラハムは答えた。「わたしの手からこの七匹の雌の小羊を受け取って、わたしがこの井戸（ベエル）を掘ったことの証拠としてください。」
21:31 それで、この場所をベエル・シェバと呼ぶようになった。二人がそこで誓いを交わしたからである。
21:32 二人はベエル・シェバで契約を結び、アビメレクと、その軍隊の長ピコルはペリシテの国に帰って行った。
21:33 アブラハムは、ベエル・シェバに一本のぎょりゅうの木を植え、永遠の神、主の御名を呼んだ。
21:34 アブラハムは、長い間、ペリシテの国に寄留した。
◆アブラハム、イサクをささげる
22:1 これらのことの後で、神はアブラハムを試された。神が、「アブラハムよ」と呼びかけ、彼が、「はい」と答えると、
22:2 神は命じられた。「あなたの息子、あなたの愛する独り子イサクを連れて、モリヤの地に行きなさい。わたしが命じる山の一つに登り、彼を焼き尽くす献げ物としてささげなさい。」
22:3 次の朝早く、アブラハムはろばに鞍を置き、献げ物に用いる薪を割り、二人の若者と息子イサクを連れ、神の命じられた所に向かって行った。
22:4 三日目になって、アブラハムが目を凝らすと、遠くにその場所が見えたので、
22:5 アブラハムは若者に言った。「お前たちは、ろばと一緒にここで待っていなさい。わたしと息子はあそこへ行って、礼拝をして、また戻ってくる。」
22:6 アブラハムは、焼き尽くす献げ物に用いる薪を取って、息子イサクに背負わせ、自分は火と刃物を手に持った。二人は一緒に歩いて行った。
22:7 イサクは父アブラハムに、「わたしのお父さん」と呼びかけた。彼が、「ここにいる。わたしの子よ」と答えると、イサクは言った。「火と薪はここにありますが、焼き尽くす献げ物にする小羊はどこにいるのですか。」
22:8 アブラハムは答えた。「わたしの子よ、焼き尽くす献げ物の小羊はきっと神が備えてくださる。」二人は一緒に歩いて行った。
22:9 神が命じられた場所に着くと、アブラハムはそこに祭壇を築き、薪を並べ、息子イサクを縛って祭壇の薪の上に載せた。
22:10 そしてアブラハムは、手を伸ばして刃物を取り、息子を屠ろうとした。
22:11 そのとき、天から主の御使いが、「アブラハム、アブラハム」と呼びかけた。彼が、「はい」と答えると、
22:12 御使いは言った。「その子に手を下すな。何もしてはならない。あなたが神を畏れる者であることが、今、分かったからだ。あなたは、自分の独り子である息子すら、わたしにささげることを惜しまなかった。」
22:13 アブラハムは目を凝らして見回した。すると、後ろの木の茂みに一匹の雄羊が角をとられていた。アブラハムは行ってその雄羊を捕まえ、息子の代わりに焼き尽くす献げ物としてささげた。
22:14 アブラハムはその場所をヤーウェ・イルエ（主は備えてくださる）と名付けた。そこで、人々は今日でも「主の山に、備えあり（イエラエ）」と言っている。
22:15 主の御使いは、再び天からアブラハムに呼びかけた。
22:16 御使いは言った。「わたしは自らにかけて誓う、と主は言われる。あなたがこの事を行い、自分の独り子である息子すら惜しまなかったので、
22:17 あなたを豊かに祝福し、あなたの子孫を天の星のように、海辺の砂のように増やそう。あなたの子孫は敵の城門を勝ち取る。
22:18 地上の諸国民はすべて、あなたの子孫によって祝福を得る。あなたがわたしの声に聞き従ったからである。」
22:19 アブラハムは若者のいるところへ戻り、共にベエル・シェバへ向かった。アブラハムはベエル・シェバに住んだ。
◆ナホルの子孫
22:20 これらのことの後で、アブラハムに知らせが届いた。「ミルカもまた、あなたの兄弟ナホルとの間に子供を産みました。
22:21 長男はウツ、その弟はブズ、次はアラムの父ケムエル、
22:22 それからケセド、ハゾ、ピルダシュ、イドラフ、ベトエルです。」
22:23 ベトエルはリベカの父となった。ミルカは、アブラハムの兄弟ナホルとの間にこれら八人の子供を産んだ。
22:24 ナホルの側女で、レウマという女性もまた、テバ、ガハム、タハシュ、マアカを産んだ。
◆サラの死と埋葬
23:1 サラの生涯は百二十七年であった。これがサラの生きた年数である。
23:2 サラは、カナン地方のキルヤト・アルバ、すなわちヘブロンで死んだ。アブラハムは、サラのために胸を打ち、嘆き悲しんだ。
23:3 アブラハムは遺体の傍らから立ち上がり、ヘトの人々に頼んだ。
23:4 「わたしは、あなたがたのところに一時滞在する寄留者ですが、あなたがたが所有する墓地を譲ってくださいませんか。亡くなった妻を葬ってやりたいのです。」
23:5 ヘトの人々はアブラハムに答えた。「どうか、
23:6 御主人、お聞きください。あなたは、わたしどもの中で神に選ばれた方です。どうぞ、わたしどもの最も良い墓地を選んで、亡くなられた方を葬ってください。わたしどもの中には墓地の提供を拒んで、亡くなられた方を葬らせない者など、一人もいません。」
23:7 アブラハムは改めて国の民であるヘトの人々に挨拶をし、
23:8 頼んだ。「もし、亡くなった妻を葬ることをお許しいただけるなら、ぜひ、わたしの願いを聞いてください。ツォハルの子、エフロンにお願いして、
23:9 あの方の畑の端にあるマクペラの洞穴を譲っていただきたいのです。十分な銀をお支払いしますから、皆様方の間に墓地を所有させてください。」
23:10 エフロンはそのとき、ヘトの人々の間に座っていた。ヘトの人エフロンは、町の門の広場に集まって来たすべてのヘトの人々が聞いているところで、アブラハムに答えた。
23:11 「どうか、御主人、お聞きください。あの畑は差し上げます。あそこにある洞穴も差し上げます。わたしの一族が立ち会っているところで、あなたに差し上げますから、早速、亡くなられた方を葬ってください。」
23:12 アブラハムは国の民の前で挨拶をし、
23:13 国の民の聞いているところで、エフロンに頼んだ。「わたしの願いを聞き入れてくださるなら、どうか、畑の代金を払わせてください。どうぞ、受け取ってください。そうすれば、亡くなった妻をあそこに葬ってやれます。」
23:14 エフロンはアブラハムに答えた。「どうか、
23:15 御主人、お聞きください。あの土地は銀四百シェケルのものです。それがあなたとわたしの間で、どれほどのことでしょう。早速、亡くなられた方を葬ってください。」
23:16 アブラハムはこのエフロンの言葉を聞き入れ、エフロンがヘトの人々が聞いているところで言った値段、銀四百シェケルを商人の通用銀の重さで量り、エフロンに渡した。
23:17 こうして、マムレの前のマクペラにあるエフロンの畑は、土地とそこの洞穴と、その周囲の境界内に生えている木を含め、
23:18 町の門の広場に来ていたすべてのヘトの人々の立ち会いのもとに、アブラハムの所有となった。

14:1 And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations,
14:2 that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).
14:3 All these joined together in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea).
14:4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
14:5 In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him came and attacked the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim,
14:6 and the Horites in their mountain of Seir, as far as El Paran, which is by the wilderness.
14:7 Then they turned back and came to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and attacked all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who dwelt in Hazezon Tamar.
14:8 And the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out and joined together in battle in the Valley of Siddim
14:9 against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of nations, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar-four kings against five.
14:10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of asphalt pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled; some fell there, and the remainder fled to the mountains.
14:11 Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way.
14:12 They also took Lot, Abram's brother's son who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
14:13 Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, for he dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner; and they were allies with Abram.
14:14 Now when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were born in his own house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.
14:15 He divided his forces against them by night, and he and his servants attacked them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus.
14:16 So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people.
14:17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley), after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him.
14:18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High.
14:19 And he blessed him and said:"Blessed be Abram of God Most High,Possessor of heaven and earth;
14:20 And blessed be God Most High,Who has delivered your enemies into your hand." And he gave him a tithe of all.
14:21 Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself."
14:22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have raised my hand to the Lord, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth,
14:23 "that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, 'I have made Abram rich'-
14:24 "except only what the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion."
18:1 Then the Lord appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day.
18:2 So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground,
18:3 and said, "My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant.
18:4 "Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.
18:5 "And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh your hearts. After that you may pass by, inasmuch as you have come to your servant." They said, "Do as you have said."
18:6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, "Quickly, make ready three measures of fine meal; knead it and make cakes."
18:7 And Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hastened to prepare it.
18:8 So he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree as they ate.
18:9 Then they said to him, "Where is Sarah your wife?" So he said, "Here, in the tent."
18:10 And He said, "I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son." (Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him.)
18:11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age; and Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.
18:12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, "After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?"
18:13 And the Lord said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh, saying, 'Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?'
18:14 "Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son."
18:15 But Sarah denied it, saying, "I did not laugh," for she was afraid. And He said, "No, but you did laugh!"
18:16 Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them on the way.
18:17 And the Lord said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing,
18:18 "since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
18:19 "For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him."
18:20 And the Lord said, "Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave,
18:21 "I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know."
18:22 Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord.
18:23 And Abraham came near and said, "Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
18:24 "Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it?
18:25 "Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?"
18:26 So the Lord said, "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes."
18:27 Then Abraham answered and said, "Indeed now, I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord:
18:28 "Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous; would You destroy all of the city for lack of five?" So He said, "If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it."
18:29 And he spoke to Him yet again and said, "Suppose there should be forty found there?" So He said, "I will not do it for the sake of forty."
18:30 Then he said, "Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Suppose thirty should be found there?" So He said, "I will not do it if I find thirty there."
18:31 And he said, "Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose twenty should be found there?" So He said, "I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty."
18:32 Then he said, "Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?" And He said, "I will not destroy it for the sake of ten."
18:33 So the Lord went His way as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.
19:1 Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground.
19:2 And he said, "Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant's house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way." And they said, "No, but we will spend the night in the open square."
19:3 But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to him and entered his house. Then he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
19:4 Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house.
19:5 And they called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally."
19:6 So Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him,
19:7 and said, "Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly!
19:8 "See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof."
19:9 And they said, "Stand back!" Then they said, "This one came in to stay here, and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them." So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door.
19:10 But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.
19:11 And they struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door.
19:12 Then the men said to Lot, "Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city-take them out of this place!
19:13 "For we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before the face of the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it."
19:14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, "Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!" But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.
19:15 When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, "Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city."
19:16 And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife's hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.
19:17 So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, "Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed."
19:18 Then Lot said to them, "Please, no, my lords!
19:19 "Indeed now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have increased your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die.
19:20 "See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live."
19:21 And he said to him, "See, I have favored you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken.
19:22 "Hurry, escape there. For I cannot do anything until you arrive there." Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
19:23 The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Zoar.
19:24 Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens.
19:25 So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.
19:26 But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
19:27 And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord.
19:28 Then he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain; and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land which went up like the smoke of a furnace.
19:29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had dwelt.
19:30 Then Lot went up out of Zoar and dwelt in the mountains, and his two daughters were with him; for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar. And he and his two daughters dwelt in a cave.
19:31 Now the firstborn said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is no man on the earth to come in to us as is the custom of all the earth.
19:32 "Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father."
19:33 So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
19:34 It happened on the next day that the firstborn said to the younger, "Indeed I lay with my father last night; let us make him drink wine tonight also, and you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father."
19:35 Then they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
19:36 Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father.
19:37 The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.
19:38 And the younger, she also bore a son and called his name Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the people of Ammon to this day.
20:1 And Abraham journeyed from there to the South, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur, and stayed in Gerar.
20:2 Now Abraham said of Sarah his wife, "She is my sister." And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.
20:3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, "Indeed you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man's wife."
20:4 But Abimelech had not come near her; and he said, "Lord, will You slay a righteous nation also?
20:5 "Did he not say to me, 'She is my sister'? And she, even she herself said, 'He is my brother.' In the integrity of my heart and innocence of my hands I have done this."
20:6 And God said to him in a dream, "Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart. For I also withheld you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her.
20:7 "Now therefore, restore the man's wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours."
20:8 So Abimelech rose early in the morning, called all his servants, and told all these things in their hearing; and the men were very much afraid.
20:9 And Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, "What have you done to us? How have I offended you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done deeds to me that ought not to be done."
20:10 Then Abimelech said to Abraham, "What did you have in view, that you have done this thing?"
20:11 And Abraham said, "Because I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will kill me on account of my wife.
20:12 "But indeed she is truly my sister. She is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.
20:13 "And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said to her, 'This is your kindness that you should do for me: in every place, wherever we go, say of me, "He is my brother." ' "
20:14 Then Abimelech took sheep, oxen, and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham; and he restored Sarah his wife to him.
20:15 And Abimelech said, "See, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you."
20:16 Then to Sarah he said, "Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; indeed this vindicates you before all who are with you and before everybody." Thus she was rebuked.
20:17 So Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female servants. Then they bore children;
20:18 for the Lord had closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
21:1 And the Lord visited Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had spoken.
21:2 For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.
21:3 And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him-whom Sarah bore to him-Isaac.
21:4 Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.
21:5 Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
21:6 And Sarah said, "God has made me laugh, and all who hear will laugh with me."
21:7 She also said, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his old age."
21:8 So the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the same day that Isaac was weaned.
21:9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, scoffing.
21:10 Therefore she said to Abraham, "Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac."
21:11 And the matter was very displeasing in Abraham's sight because of his son.
21:12 But God said to Abraham, "Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your seed shall be called.
21:13 "Yet I will also make a nation of the son of the bondwoman, because he is your seed."
21:14 So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water; and putting it on her shoulder, he gave it and the boy to Hagar, and sent her away. Then she departed and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba.
21:15 And the water in the skin was used up, and she placed the boy under one of the shrubs.
21:16 Then she went and sat down across from him at a distance of about a bowshot; for she said to herself, "Let me not see the death of the boy." So she sat opposite him, and lifted her voice and wept.
21:17 And God heard the voice of the lad. Then the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, "What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.
21:18 "Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation."
21:19 Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink.
21:20 So God was with the lad; and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.
21:21 He dwelt in the Wilderness of Paran; and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
21:22 And it came to pass at that time that Abimelech and Phichol, the commander of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying, "God is with you in all that you do.
21:23 "Now therefore, swear to me by God that you will not deal falsely with me, with my offspring, or with my posterity; but that according to the kindness that I have done to you, you will do to me and to the land in which you have dwelt."
21:24 And Abraham said, "I will swear."
21:25 Then Abraham rebuked Abimelech because of a well of water which Abimelech's servants had seized.
21:26 And Abimelech said, "I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, nor had I heard of it until today."
21:27 So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them made a covenant.
21:28 And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.
21:29 Then Abimelech asked Abraham, "What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs which you have set by themselves?"
21:30 And he said, "You will take these seven ewe lambs from my hand, that they may be my witness that I have dug this well."
21:31 Therefore he called that place Beersheba, because the two of them swore an oath there.
21:32 Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba. So Abimelech rose with Phichol, the commander of his army, and they returned to the land of the Philistines.
21:33 Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there called on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.
21:34 And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines many days.
22:1 Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
22:2 Then He said, "Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."
22:3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
22:4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off.
22:5 And Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you."
22:6 So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together.
22:7 But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, "My father!" And he said, "Here I am, my son." Then he said, "Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?"
22:8 And Abraham said, "My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering." So the two of them went together.
22:9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.
22:10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
22:11 But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" So he said, "Here I am."
22:12 And He said, "Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me."
22:13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
22:14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, "In the Mount of The Lord it shall be provided."
22:15 Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven,
22:16 and said: "By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son-
22:17 "blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.
22:18 "In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice."
22:19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.
22:20 Now it came to pass after these things that it was told Abraham, saying, "Indeed Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor:
22:21 "Huz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram,
22:22 "Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel."
22:23 And Bethuel begot Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother.
22:24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Thahash, and Maachah.
23:1 Sarah lived one hundred and twenty-seven years; these were the years of the life of Sarah.
23:2 So Sarah died in Kirjath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.
23:3 Then Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying,
23:4 "I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight."
23:5 And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him,
23:6 "Hear us, my lord: You are a mighty prince among us; bury your dead in the choicest of our burial places. None of us will withhold from you his burial place, that you may bury your dead."
23:7 Then Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people of the land, the sons of Heth.
23:8 And he spoke with them, saying, "If it is your wish that I bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and meet with Ephron the son of Zohar for me,
23:9 "that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he has, which is at the end of his field. Let him give it to me at the full price, as property for a burial place among you."
23:10 Now Ephron dwelt among the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the presence of the sons of Heth, all who entered at the gate of his city, saying,
23:11 "No, my lord, hear me: I give you the field and the cave that is in it; I give it to you in the presence of the sons of my people. I give it to you. Bury your dead!"
23:12 Then Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land;
23:13 and he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, "If you will give it, please hear me. I will give you money for the field; take it from me and I will bury my dead there."
23:14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,
23:15 "My lord, listen to me; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver. What is that between you and me? So bury your dead."
23:16 And Abraham listened to Ephron; and Abraham weighed out the silver for Ephron which he had named in the hearing of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, currency of the merchants.
23:17 So the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field and the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, which were within all the surrounding borders, were deeded
23:18 to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city.
23:19 And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.
23:20 So the field and the cave that is in it were deeded to Abraham by the sons of Heth as property for a burial place.
