◆アブラムの召命と移住
12:1 主はアブラムに言われた。「あなたは生まれ故郷／父の家を離れて／わたしが示す地に行きなさい。
12:2 わたしはあなたを大いなる国民にし／あなたを祝福し、あなたの名を高める／祝福の源となるように。
12:3 あなたを祝福する人をわたしは祝福し／あなたを呪う者をわたしは呪う。地上の氏族はすべて／あなたによって祝福に入る。」
12:4 アブラムは、主の言葉に従って旅立った。ロトも共に行った。アブラムは、ハランを出発したとき七十五歳であった。
12:5 アブラムは妻のサライ、甥のロトを連れ、蓄えた財産をすべて携え、ハランで加わった人々と共にカナン地方へ向かって出発し、カナン地方に入った。
12:6 アブラムはその地を通り、シケムの聖所、モレの樫の木まで来た。当時、その地方にはカナン人が住んでいた。
12:7 主はアブラムに現れて、言われた。「あなたの子孫にこの土地を与える。」アブラムは、彼に現れた主のために、そこに祭壇を築いた。
12:8 アブラムは、そこからベテルの東の山へ移り、西にベテル、東にアイを望む所に天幕を張って、そこにも主のために祭壇を築き、主の御名を呼んだ。
12:9 アブラムは更に旅を続け、ネゲブ地方へ移った。
◆エジプト滞在
12:10 その地方に飢饉があった。アブラムは、その地方の飢饉がひどかったので、エジプトに下り、そこに滞在することにした。
12:11 エジプトに入ろうとしたとき、妻サライに言った。「あなたが美しいのを、わたしはよく知っている。
12:12 エジプト人があなたを見たら、『この女はあの男の妻だ』と言って、わたしを殺し、あなたを生かしておくにちがいない。
12:13 どうか、わたしの妹だ、と言ってください。そうすれば、わたしはあなたのゆえに幸いになり、あなたのお陰で命も助かるだろう。」
12:14 アブラムがエジプトに入ると、エジプト人はサライを見て、大変美しいと思った。
12:15 ファラオの家臣たちも彼女を見て、ファラオに彼女のことを褒めたので、サライはファラオの宮廷に召し入れられた。
12:16 アブラムも彼女のゆえに幸いを受け、羊の群れ、牛の群れ、ろば、男女の奴隷、雌ろば、らくだなどを与えられた。
12:17 ところが主は、アブラムの妻サライのことで、ファラオと宮廷の人々を恐ろしい病気にかからせた。
12:18 ファラオはアブラムを呼び寄せて言った。「あなたはわたしに何ということをしたのか。なぜ、あの婦人は自分の妻だと、言わなかったのか。
12:19 なぜ、『わたしの妹です』などと言ったのか。だからこそ、わたしの妻として召し入れたのだ。さあ、あなたの妻を連れて、立ち去ってもらいたい。」
12:20 ファラオは家来たちに命じて、アブラムを、その妻とすべての持ち物と共に送り出させた。
◆ロトとの別れ
13:1 アブラムは、妻と共に、すべての持ち物を携え、エジプトを出て再びネゲブ地方へ上った。ロトも一緒であった。
13:2 アブラムは非常に多くの家畜や金銀を持っていた。
13:3 ネゲブ地方から更に、ベテルに向かって旅を続け、ベテルとアイとの間の、以前に天幕を張った所まで来た。
13:4 そこは、彼が最初に祭壇を築いて、主の御名を呼んだ場所であった。
13:5 アブラムと共に旅をしていたロトもまた、羊や牛の群れを飼い、たくさんの天幕を持っていた。
13:6 その土地は、彼らが一緒に住むには十分ではなかった。彼らの財産が多すぎたから、一緒に住むことができなかったのである。
13:7 アブラムの家畜を飼う者たちと、ロトの家畜を飼う者たちとの間に争いが起きた。そのころ、その地方にはカナン人もペリジ人も住んでいた。
13:8 アブラムはロトに言った。「わたしたちは親類どうしだ。わたしとあなたの間ではもちろん、お互いの羊飼いの間でも争うのはやめよう。
13:9 あなたの前には幾らでも土地があるのだから、ここで別れようではないか。あなたが左に行くなら、わたしは右に行こう。あなたが右に行くなら、わたしは左に行こう。」
13:10 ロトが目を上げて眺めると、ヨルダン川流域の低地一帯は、主がソドムとゴモラを滅ぼす前であったので、ツォアルに至るまで、主の園のように、エジプトの国のように、見渡すかぎりよく潤っていた。
13:11 ロトはヨルダン川流域の低地一帯を選んで、東へ移って行った。こうして彼らは、左右に別れた。
13:12 アブラムはカナン地方に住み、ロトは低地の町々に住んだが、彼はソドムまで天幕を移した。
13:13 ソドムの住民は邪悪で、主に対して多くの罪を犯していた。
13:14 主は、ロトが別れて行った後、アブラムに言われた。「さあ、目を上げて、あなたがいる場所から東西南北を見渡しなさい。
13:15 見えるかぎりの土地をすべて、わたしは永久にあなたとあなたの子孫に与える。
13:16 あなたの子孫を大地の砂粒のようにする。大地の砂粒が数えきれないように、あなたの子孫も数えきれないであろう。
13:17 さあ、この土地を縦横に歩き回るがよい。わたしはそれをあなたに与えるから。」
13:18 アブラムは天幕を移し、ヘブロンにあるマムレの樫の木のところに来て住み、そこに主のために祭壇を築いた。
◆王たちの戦い
14:1 シンアルの王アムラフェル、エラサルの王アルヨク、エラムの王ケドルラオメル、ゴイムの王ティドアルが、
14:2 ソドムの王ベラ、ゴモラの王ビルシャ、アドマの王シンアブ、ツェボイムの王シェムエベル、ベラ、すなわちツォアルの王と戦ったとき、
14:3 これら五人の王は皆、シディムの谷、すなわち塩の海で同盟を結んだ。
14:4 彼らは十二年間ケドルラオメルに支配されていたが、十三年目に背いたのである。
14:5 十四年目に、ケドルラオメルとその味方の王たちが来て、アシュテロト・カルナイムでレファイム人を、ハムでズジム人を、シャベ・キルヤタイムでエミム人を、
14:6 セイルの山地でフリ人を撃ち、荒れ野に近いエル・パランまで進んだ。
14:7 彼らは転進して、エン・ミシュパト、すなわちカデシュに向かい、アマレク人の全領土とハツェツォン・タマルに住むアモリ人を撃った。
14:8 そこで、ソドムの王、ゴモラの王、アドマの王、ツェボイムの王、ベラすなわちツォアルの王は兵を繰り出し、シディムの谷で彼らと戦おうと陣を敷いた。
14:9 エラムの王ケドルラオメル、ゴイムの王ティドアル、シンアルの王アムラフェル、エラサルの王アルヨクの四人の王に対して、これら五人の王が戦いを挑んだのである。
14:10 シディムの谷には至るところに天然アスファルトの穴があった。ソドムとゴモラの王は逃げるとき、その穴に落ちた。残りの王は山へ逃れた。
14:11 ソドムとゴモラの財産や食糧はすべて奪い去られ、
14:12 ソドムに住んでいたアブラムの甥ロトも、財産もろとも連れ去られた。
◆ロトの救出
14:13 逃げ延びた一人の男がヘブライ人アブラムのもとに来て、そのことを知らせた。アブラムは当時、アモリ人マムレの樫の木の傍らに住んでいた。マムレはエシュコルとアネルの兄弟で、彼らはアブラムと同盟を結んでいた。
14:14 アブラムは、親族の者が捕虜になったと聞いて、彼の家で生まれた奴隷で、訓練を受けた者三百十八人を召集し、ダンまで追跡した。
14:15 夜、彼と僕たちは分かれて敵を襲い、ダマスコの北のホバまで追跡した。
14:16 アブラムはすべての財産を取り返し、親族のロトとその財産、女たちやそのほかの人々も取り戻した。
◆メルキゼデクの祝福
14:17 アブラムがケドルラオメルとその味方の王たちを撃ち破って帰って来たとき、ソドムの王はシャベの谷、すなわち王の谷まで彼を出迎えた。
14:18 いと高き神の祭司であったサレムの王メルキゼデクも、パンとぶどう酒を持って来た。
14:19 彼はアブラムを祝福して言った。「天地の造り主、いと高き神に／アブラムは祝福されますように。
14:20 敵をあなたの手に渡された／いと高き神がたたえられますように。」アブラムはすべての物の十分の一を彼に贈った。
14:21 ソドムの王はアブラムに、「人はわたしにお返しください。しかし、財産はお取りください」と言ったが、
14:22 アブラムはソドムの王に言った。「わたしは、天地の造り主、いと高き神、主に手を上げて誓います。
14:23 あなたの物は、たとえ糸一筋、靴ひも一本でも、決していただきません。『アブラムを裕福にしたのは、このわたしだ』と、あなたに言われたくありません。
14:24 わたしは何も要りません。ただ、若い者たちが食べたものと、わたしと共に戦った人々、すなわち、アネルとエシュコルとマムレの分は別です。彼らには分け前を取らせてください。」
◆神の約束
15:1 これらのことの後で、主の言葉が幻の中でアブラムに臨んだ。「恐れるな、アブラムよ。わたしはあなたの盾である。あなたの受ける報いは非常に大きいであろう。」
15:2 アブラムは尋ねた。「わが神、主よ。わたしに何をくださるというのですか。わたしには子供がありません。家を継ぐのはダマスコのエリエゼルです。」
15:3 アブラムは言葉をついだ。「御覧のとおり、あなたはわたしに子孫を与えてくださいませんでしたから、家の僕が跡を継ぐことになっています。」
15:4 見よ、主の言葉があった。「その者があなたの跡を継ぐのではなく、あなたから生まれる者が跡を継ぐ。」
15:5 主は彼を外に連れ出して言われた。「天を仰いで、星を数えることができるなら、数えてみるがよい。」そして言われた。「あなたの子孫はこのようになる。」
15:6 アブラムは主を信じた。主はそれを彼の義と認められた。
15:7 主は言われた。「わたしはあなたをカルデアのウルから導き出した主である。わたしはあなたにこの土地を与え、それを継がせる。」
15:8 アブラムは尋ねた。「わが神、主よ。この土地をわたしが継ぐことを、何によって知ることができましょうか。」
15:9 主は言われた。「三歳の雌牛と、三歳の雌山羊と、三歳の雄羊と、山鳩と、鳩の雛とをわたしのもとに持って来なさい。」
15:10 アブラムはそれらのものをみな持って来て、真っ二つに切り裂き、それぞれを互いに向かい合わせて置いた。ただ、鳥は切り裂かなかった。
15:11 禿鷹がこれらの死体をねらって降りて来ると、アブラムは追い払った。
15:12 日が沈みかけたころ、アブラムは深い眠りに襲われた。すると、恐ろしい大いなる暗黒が彼に臨んだ。
15:13 主はアブラムに言われた。「よく覚えておくがよい。あなたの子孫は異邦の国で寄留者となり、四百年の間奴隷として仕え、苦しめられるであろう。
15:14 しかしわたしは、彼らが奴隷として仕えるその国民を裁く。その後、彼らは多くの財産を携えて脱出するであろう。
15:15 あなた自身は、長寿を全うして葬られ、安らかに先祖のもとに行く。
15:16 ここに戻って来るのは、四代目の者たちである。それまでは、アモリ人の罪が極みに達しないからである。」
15:17 日が沈み、暗闇に覆われたころ、突然、煙を吐く炉と燃える松明が二つに裂かれた動物の間を通り過ぎた。
15:18 その日、主はアブラムと契約を結んで言われた。「あなたの子孫にこの土地を与える。エジプトの川から大河ユーフラテスに至るまで、
15:19 カイン人、ケナズ人、カドモニ人、
15:20 ヘト人、ペリジ人、レファイム人、
15:21 アモリ人、カナン人、ギルガシ人、エブス人の土地を与える。」
◆ハガルの逃亡と出産
16:1 アブラムの妻サライには、子供が生まれなかった。彼女には、ハガルというエジプト人の女奴隷がいた。
16:2 サライはアブラムに言った。「主はわたしに子供を授けてくださいません。どうぞ、わたしの女奴隷のところに入ってください。わたしは彼女によって、子供を与えられるかもしれません。」アブラムは、サライの願いを聞き入れた。
16:3 アブラムの妻サライは、エジプト人の女奴隷ハガルを連れて来て、夫アブラムの側女とした。アブラムがカナン地方に住んでから、十年後のことであった。
16:4 アブラムはハガルのところに入り、彼女は身ごもった。ところが、自分が身ごもったのを知ると、彼女は女主人を軽んじた。
16:5 サライはアブラムに言った。「わたしが不当な目に遭ったのは、あなたのせいです。女奴隷をあなたのふところに与えたのはわたしなのに、彼女は自分が身ごもったのを知ると、わたしを軽んじるようになりました。主がわたしとあなたとの間を裁かれますように。」
16:6 アブラムはサライに答えた。「あなたの女奴隷はあなたのものだ。好きなようにするがいい。」サライは彼女につらく当たったので、彼女はサライのもとから逃げた。
16:7 主の御使いが荒れ野の泉のほとり、シュル街道に沿う泉のほとりで彼女と出会って、
16:8 言った。「サライの女奴隷ハガルよ。あなたはどこから来て、どこへ行こうとしているのか。」「女主人サライのもとから逃げているところです」と答えると、
16:9 主の御使いは言った。「女主人のもとに帰り、従順に仕えなさい。」
16:10 主の御使いは更に言った。「わたしは、あなたの子孫を数えきれないほど多く増やす。」
16:11 主の御使いはまた言った。「今、あなたは身ごもっている。やがてあなたは男の子を産む。その子をイシュマエルと名付けなさい／主があなたの悩みをお聞きになられたから。
16:12 彼は野生のろばのような人になる。彼があらゆる人にこぶしを振りかざすので／人々は皆、彼にこぶしを振るう。彼は兄弟すべてに敵対して暮らす。」
16:13 ハガルは自分に語りかけた主の御名を呼んで、「あなたこそエル・ロイ（わたしを顧みられる神）です」と言った。それは、彼女が、「神がわたしを顧みられた後もなお、わたしはここで見続けていたではないか」と言ったからである。
16:14 そこで、その井戸は、ベエル・ラハイ・ロイと呼ばれるようになった。それはカデシュとベレドの間にある。
16:15 ハガルはアブラムとの間に男の子を産んだ。アブラムは、ハガルが産んだ男の子をイシュマエルと名付けた。
16:16 ハガルがイシュマエルを産んだとき、アブラムは八十六歳であった。
12:1 Now the Lord had said to Abram:"Get out of your country,From your familyAnd from your father's house,To a land that I will show you.
12:2 I will make you a great nation;I will bless youAnd make your name great;And you shall be a blessing.
12:3 I will bless those who bless you,And I will curse him who curses you;And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
12:4 So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with
him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
12:5 Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan.
12:6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land.
12:7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
12:8 And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.
12:9 So Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South.
12:10 Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land.
12:11 And it came to pass, when he was close to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, "Indeed I know that you are a woman of beautiful countenance.
12:12 "Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, 'This is his wife'; and they will kill me, but they will let you live.
12:13 "Please say you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you."
12:14 So it was, when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful.
12:15 The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and commended her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to Pharaoh's house.
12:16 He treated Abram well for her sake. He had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.
12:17 But the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife.
12:18 And Pharaoh called Abram and said, "What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?
12:19 "Why did you say, 'She is my sister'? I might have taken her as my wife. Now therefore, here is your wife; take her and go your way."
12:20 So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, with his wife and all that he had.
13:1 Then Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, to the South.
13:2 Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.
13:3 And he went on his journey from the South as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,
13:4 to the place of the altar which he had made there at first. And there Abram called on the name of the Lord.
13:5 Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks and herds and tents.
13:6 Now the land was not able to support them, that they might dwell together, for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together.
13:7 And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. The Canaanites and the Perizzites then dwelt in the land.
13:8 So Abram said to Lot, "Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren.
13:9 "Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left."
13:10 And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar.
13:11 Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other.
13:12 Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom.
13:13 But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the Lord.
13:14 And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: "Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are-northward, southward, eastward, and westward;
13:15 "for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.
13:16 "And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered.
13:17 "Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you."
13:18 Then Abram moved his tent, and went and dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to the Lord.
14:1 And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations,
14:2 that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).
14:3 All these joined together in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea).
14:4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
14:5 In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him came and attacked the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim,
14:6 and the Horites in their mountain of Seir, as far as El Paran, which is by the wilderness.
14:7 Then they turned back and came to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and attacked all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who dwelt in Hazezon Tamar.
14:8 And the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out and joined together in battle in the Valley of Siddim
14:9 against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of nations, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar-four kings against five.
14:10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of asphalt pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled; some fell there, and the remainder fled to the mountains.
14:11 Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way.
14:12 They also took Lot, Abram's brother's son who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
14:13 Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, for he dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner; and they were allies with Abram.
14:14 Now when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were born in his own house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.
14:15 He divided his forces against them by night, and he and his servants attacked them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus.
14:16 So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people.
14:17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley), after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him.
14:18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High.
14:19 And he blessed him and said:"Blessed be Abram of God Most High,Possessor of heaven and earth;
14:20 And blessed be God Most High,Who has delivered your enemies into your hand." And he gave him a tithe of all.
14:21 Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself."
14:22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have raised my hand to the Lord, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth,
14:23 "that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, 'I have made Abram rich'-
14:24 "except only what the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion."
15:1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward."
15:2 But Abram said, "Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?"
15:3 Then Abram said, "Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!"
15:4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, "This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir."
15:5 Then He brought him outside and said, "Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them." And He said to him, "So shall your descendants be."
15:6 And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.
15:7 Then He said to him, "I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it."
15:8 And he said, "Lord God, how shall I know that I will inherit it?"
15:9 So He said to him, "Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon."
15:10 Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in two.
15:11 And when the vultures came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
15:12 Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him.
15:13 Then He said to Abram: "Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years.
15:14 "And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions.
15:15 "Now as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age.
15:16 "But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete."
15:17 And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that passed between those pieces.
15:18 On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: "To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates-
15:19 "the Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites,
15:20 "the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,
15:21 "the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites."
16:1 Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar.
16:2 So Sarai said to Abram, "See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her." And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.
16:3 Then Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan.
16:4 So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became despised in her eyes.
16:5 Then Sarai said to Abram, "My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your embrace; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. The Lord judge between you and me."
16:6 So Abram said to Sarai, "Indeed your maid is in your hand; do to her as you please." And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, she fled from her presence.
16:7 Now the Angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.
16:8 And He said, "Hagar, Sarai's maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?" She said, "I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai."
16:9 The Angel of the Lord said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hand."
16:10 Then the Angel of the Lord said to her, "I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude."
16:11 And the Angel of the Lord said to her:"Behold, you are with child,And you shall bear a son.You shall call his name Ishmael,Because the Lord has heard your affliction.
16:12 He shall be a wild man;His hand shall be against every man,And every man's hand against him.And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren."
16:13 Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, "Have I also here seen Him who sees me?"
16:14 Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; observe, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
16:15 So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
16:16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
